What do Honda owners in Hermosa Beach usually need?

Most Honda key calls come down to a short list of situations: a key that disappeared somewhere between the sand and the car, a spare that was never made, a remote-head key with a cracked shell, or a smart fob that quit. Hermosa Beach is under 1.5 square miles and densely built, so a Honda is usually parked within a few blocks of the water, and the key has often spent the day in a pocket or beach bag with sand and salt air.

The places where a Honda key problem turns into a phone call are easy to picture. Walk streets and alley-access homes near The Strand, the Pier Plaza and downtown stretch, and the Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard corridors are all places where people park and walk away from the car. Lose the key on the sand, drop it in the surf, or lock it inside after an evening out, and you are stuck at the curb with a car that will not start.

Housing plays a part too. Hermosa Beach has a lot of duplexes, triplexes and small apartment buildings, with a high share of renters and frequent unit turnover. In households where people come and go, spare car keys wander. A roommate leaves with the only copy, a tenant moves out, or a key gets passed around until nobody knows where it is. If that is your situation, a fresh key set made on the spot is often cleaner than guessing who still has the old one.

Here are the Honda problems we are asked about most:

  • A worn ignition on a 1996-2014 Honda: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning.
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine because it has no transponder chip.
  • A cracked remote-head key shell, broken keyring hole or worn buttons, common on 2005-2015 models.
  • A dead smart-fob battery, where the dash says the key is not detected but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door.
  • A flashing green key light, which points to an immobilizer, antenna ring or chip fault.
  • A cloned or low-quality aftermarket chip that works some days and fails on others.
  • A complete loss of every key, which we cover in its own section below.

How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?

We work from a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and run mobile service vans, so the key work happens where your Honda is parked. Hermosa Beach is about 19 miles from our base, and we tell you plainly on the phone what to expect for timing rather than promising a number we cannot control. The steps are the same whether you are on a walk street, in a side alley or on a main road.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Tell us the model, the year, whether it starts with a key or a push button, and how many working keys you have left.
  2. We work out which key your Honda uses. That depends on the model and year, and where the answer is not obvious we confirm it by VIN or in person instead of guessing.
  3. We tell you before we drive whether your car is something we can do at the curb or a case where the newest model year may be dealer-only until tool support catches up.
  4. We come to you. You show us that the car is yours, which any legitimate locksmith should ask for.
  5. We cut the key blade if your Honda uses one, then program the key through the OBD-II port with professional equipment.
  6. We test everything before we leave: door, trunk, remote buttons where they apply, and a real engine start. If you only had one key, this is the right time to talk about making a spare.

Which Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Honda did not switch to immobilizer keys on every model at once. The changeover happened model by model, so the year of your Honda matters more than the badge. Exact changeover years vary and we verify them per year, but this is the general picture.

Several Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s: the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. With no chip in the key, any hardware-store copy starts the car, which is a big reason those years show up so often on theft lists. If you own one, a better key does not make the car harder to steal, so it is worth knowing that going in.

The first chip era used a fixed-code chip called Megamos 13. That covers the Accord from 1998 to 2002, the Odyssey from 1999 to 2004, the Civic from 2001 to 2005, the CR-V from 2002 to 2004 and the Pilot in 2003 and 2004.

Next came the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: the 2003 Accord, the 2005 CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot, the 2006 Ridgeline and Civic, and the 2009 Fit. After that, Honda moved to its G chip (ID47, Hitag 3), starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014-2017 redesigns.

Smart proximity keys generally arrived at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline are still catalogued as ID47 smart keys through 2026.

One caution: some European-market catalogs list a different chip, Megamos Crypto 48, for certain late-1990s and early-2000s models. US Hondas follow the eras above, so if a website sells you a key based on a European listing, check it against your actual car. For more on Honda keys in general, see our Honda car key guide.

  • No chip: Civic through 2000, CR-V through 2001.
  • Megamos 13: roughly 1998-2005, depending on the model.
  • ID46 / Hitag 2: Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009.
  • ID47 / Hitag 3 (Honda G chip): from the 2013 Accord through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
  • Hitag AES 4A smart fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023.

What if I have lost every Honda key?

All keys lost sounds like the worst case, but Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era can be programmed through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. On most models no PIN code is needed from the manufacturer, and Honda does not generally require NASTF SDRM credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. In many cases we can make a new key at the curb without a tow to the dealership.

There are real exceptions, and we would rather tell you now than surprise you at the car:

  • On the earliest Megamos 13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or the ECU. That can take longer than a typical curbside job.
  • Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims with Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory-linked keys need each key matched to the right memory slot, or the seat and mirror settings will not follow the key properly.
  • On the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools such as the Autel IM series cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up.
  • We confirm coverage for your exact vehicle before we quote, so you are not paying for a trip that cannot finish the job.

What affects the cost of a Honda key in Hermosa Beach?

We do not give a price in a web page because the honest answer depends on your car. Here is what moves the cost up or down, so you can judge any quote you get, ours included:

  • The key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart proximity fob are very different pieces of hardware.
  • The era of the car: a car that already has a working key and just needs a spare (add-a-key) is usually the more economical route than a car where every key is gone.
  • Whether any key still works: all keys lost can involve more steps, and on the earliest Megamos 13 cars it can involve bench work.
  • Memory-linked keys: Driver 1 and Driver 2 setups add a matching step.
  • Key quality: genuine or good-quality aftermarket keys cost more than bargain chips, but the cheap ones are the ones that tend to fail intermittently.
  • Time of day and location: a night-time call to a curb in Hermosa Beach involves different logistics than a daytime visit, and we explain that when you call.
  • Whether the car needs the dealer: if your model year is not yet covered by aftermarket tools, the question is not our price against theirs, it is whether the job can be done outside the dealership at all.

Dealer or locksmith for a Honda key: a fair comparison

The dealer is a legitimate option and sometimes the only one. For the newest model years on the 4A platform, where aftermarket tools may not yet reach all-keys-lost, the dealer can be the way to go. If that applies to your Honda, we will say so on the phone rather than send a van that cannot finish the job.

For most Hondas on the road, though, a locksmith can do the same work. We come to the car, so you do not have to tow it or arrange a ride, and the key is cut and programmed in one visit. That matters most when the car is stuck and you have nowhere else to be but beside it.

Dealers have factory parts and factory software and are the natural choice if your car is still under a warranty that covers the key system or if the newest tools are involved. Locksmiths are usually the more flexible option on timing and location, and often the more economical one on older models. Neither is right for every case. Ask each for a clear quote for your exact year, model and situation, and compare like with like.

Honda key service across Hermosa Beach

Hermosa Beach is compact, and we cover the whole city under ZIP code 90254. That includes the Sand Section, Hermosa Valley, East Hermosa, North Hermosa, South Hermosa, the Pier Plaza and downtown area, and the Pacific Coast Highway and Aviation Boulevard corridors. Whether your Honda is parked near the Hermosa Beach Pier, by the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt, near South Park or Clark Field, or in front of a duplex in the Sand Section, our mobile van can come to you.

The local conditions are worth knowing. The entire city sits within a few blocks of the ocean, so salt-air corrosion of exterior locks, hinges and gate hardware is routine, and marine layer damp swells doors and sticks deadbolts in older wood-frame cottages. A Honda key itself is not a lock, but a key that has been living in a salty pocket can wear faster, and a worn blade turns a worn ignition into a stuck one. If your key is already hard to turn, it is better to replace it before it breaks off.

Many Hermosa Beach households need more than car keys. Besides cars, we handle walk-street cottage lockouts near The Strand, rekeying for rental turnover in Sand Section duplexes and triplexes, replacement of corroded exterior locksets on beachfront units, and garage and side-gate lock repair along the Hermosa Valley Greenbelt. If your car key and house key are on the same ring and the ring is gone, we can talk through both in one call.

Which Hermosa Beach car key service do you need?

Honda owners usually land on this page for one of a few reasons, and each has its own page with more detail:

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Honda?

We have been in business since 1987. We are one company with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and our own mobile service vans, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, the call is answered around the clock, every day of the year, and you are not routed to a dispatch middleman who sends the job to whoever is available.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. For Honda keys that matters because the details are model-specific: which chip era, whether Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory is involved, whether the newest platform has tool coverage yet. We confirm those before we quote.

One more thing worth doing with any locksmith, us included: ask for their license. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and a legitimate company will be able to tell you its number. A company that dodges the question is a company to skip, especially when it is going to program a key to your car.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a new Honda key if I have lost all my keys?

In most cases yes. Every Honda immobilizer era can be programmed through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, and most models do not need a manufacturer PIN code. The exceptions are the earliest Megamos 13 cars (roughly 1998-2004), which sometimes need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest 4A-platform model years, which can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage for your exact car before quoting.

My Honda key opens the doors but will not start the car. Why?

This is the classic sign of a key cut without a transponder chip, usually a hardware-store copy. The blade turns the lock, but the car never receives the immobilizer code it expects. The fix is to program a proper chip key, or have us check whether the chip in your current key is faulty.

Does a Honda from the late 1990s or early 2000s have a chip in the key?

It depends on the model. The Civic through 2000 and CR-V through 2001 had plain mechanical keys. The Accord from 1998, the Odyssey from 1999, the Civic from 2001, the CR-V from 2002 and the Pilot in 2003 and 2004 used the fixed-code Megamos 13 chip. We verify the exact year of your car before choosing a key.

The dash says 'key not detected' on my Honda. Is the fob broken?

Often it is just a dead battery in the smart fob. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob should still open the door. If the battery is fine and the message remains, the fob or the car's antenna may have a fault, and we can test both. Our key fob replacement page covers the next steps.

Can you do a 2023 or newer CR-V, Pilot, HR-V or 2022 or newer Civic?

Those belong to the Hitag AES 4A platform. Adding a key is covered by many professional tools, and current ones such as the Autel IM series handle most all-keys-lost jobs too, but the newest model years can still be dealer-only. We check your exact vehicle, by VIN where needed, and tell you honestly before we drive out.

What does a flashing green key light mean on a Honda?

It points to an immobilizer problem, such as a fault in the antenna ring or the chip in the key. It does not always mean the key is bad. Tell us the model and year when you call, and we will work out whether it is the key, the antenna or something else.

How much does a Honda key cost in Hermosa Beach?

It depends on the key type, the era of your car, whether you still have a working key, whether memory-linked keys are involved, and the time of day. A spare when you already have a key is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost. Call (213) 577-1366 with your model and year and we will explain what applies to your car.

Do I have to tow my Honda to get a new key?

For most Hondas, no. We come to you with a mobile van and cut and program the key at the curb. The exception is a model year where only the dealer currently has the tools, and we tell you that up front.

Do you work at night and on weekends in Hermosa Beach?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round. Call (213) 577-1366 any time, and if you need to talk about anything else, you can also reach us through our contact page.
