What do Kia owners in Hawthorne usually need?
The Kia key problems that come up most often are a spare that was never made and now the only key is gone, a flip key whose hinge snapped, a smart fob that suddenly reads dead, or a key that has started sticking in the ignition. Kias are common cars and the keys they use vary a lot by year and trim, so the first thing we sort out is which kind of key yours is. That one answer decides almost everything else about the job.
Where the trouble happens depends on where the car lives. Hawthorne has a lot of older apartment buildings, including dingbat-style buildings along Hawthorne Boulevard and the other commercial corridors. A Kia owner there is usually dealing with a car parked on the street or beside the building, with the key upstairs, in a jacket on a chair, or simply gone. In the postwar stucco tracts of Hollyglen and Bodger Park, it is more often a driveway or the curb in front of a single-family house. Around the industrial district near Hawthorne Municipal Airport and SpaceX, it is a car sitting in a work lot with a shift still to finish.
A dead smart-fob battery is the quiet one. The dash says the key is not detected, but the hidden emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door, and the car can often be started by following the manual's backup method. Sometimes that is the whole problem. If the fob itself is damaged or worn out, see our page on key fob replacement in Hawthorne.
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Our work happens at your car, not in a waiting room. The storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 15 miles from Hawthorne, and the mobile vans carry the cutting and programming equipment so the job can be finished where the car is parked. Here is how a typical call goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the year, model and trim, whether the car has a push-button start or a turn-key ignition, and how many working keys you still have. The VIN, visible at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb, helps a lot.
- We tell you what that situation usually involves and what will affect the cost, and we give you a quote before a van is sent. If something on the car could change the answer, we say so then rather than after we arrive.
- The technician arrives and asks for ID and proof that the car is yours, such as registration or title. We do this for every vehicle.
- We confirm the key system by VIN and by looking at the car. This matters because many Kias have no immobilizer at all and others have several generations of chip.
- We cut the key, by code or from the lock if there is no key to work from, and program it through the OBD-II port where the car needs it. The remote is programmed separately where one is fitted.
- We test everything before we leave: starting the car, locking and unlocking, the remote buttons, and every key you will be carrying, including any spare.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Kia's US key history has three arcs, and knowing which one your car falls into explains why one owner pays for a simple cut key and another needs full programming.
- Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. Some 2001-2006 models use Texas 4D-60 chips, and from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s the chip is Philips ID46 (Hitag 2).
- Turn-key cars, roughly 2011-2021 and some 2022: most US Kias with a turn-key ignition from this stretch have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. A correctly cut key starts the car, and only the keyless-entry remote, where fitted, needs OBD programming.
- Push-button cars: these always carried a full immobilizer. Early 2010s smart keys use ID46, roughly 2016-2020 moved to Hitag 3 / ID47, and 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD use NXP Hitag-AES '4A' or Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems.
- 2022 model year onward: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. At least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent, so we do not assume. We verify by year and VIN.
Why a hardware-store copy can fail, and what the anti-theft update changes
A hardware-store copy of a Kia key will usually start a no-immobilizer car without trouble, because the car is not checking for a chip. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia, the same copy may turn the lock and open the door but will not start the engine until a chip has been programmed to the car. Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs are a related problem. They sometimes work, then fail intermittently, which is the kind of fault that always shows up on a bad day.
One more point that causes confusion. Kia's post-theft-wave anti-theft software update does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed. If your Kia has had the update, the key question is still answered by the year, trim and VIN.
What if you have lost every Kia key?
All keys lost is the situation people dread, but how hard it is depends on the car. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia it is the easy version: we cut a key to fit the lock, no transponder programming is involved, and only the remote, if there is one, needs OBD programming.
On an immobilizer-equipped Kia, we program a new key through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, which comes from the VIN, a dealer/KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access. For the 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems, current professional tools support add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. We say most, not all, because PIN and server requirements vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job.
So when you call, expect honest questions instead of a flat yes. If your car is one we cannot be sure about from the phone, we will say that and confirm in person by VIN. More on this situation is on our lost car key replacement in Hawthorne page.

Call (213) 577-1366What about a Kia that was stolen and recovered, or a worn ignition?
Kias from 2011 to 2022 with turn-key ignitions were hit hard by the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. Cars that come back have often lost their steering-column shrouds and had the ignition lock destroyed, and a stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock. In that case a key alone will not fix anything. The lock has to be replaced and a key cut to match it. If this is your situation, tell us when you call so we plan for the lock and not just a key.
The more ordinary version is a worn ignition on a high-mileage car. The wafers inside the lock wear, and the key starts to stick or refuses to turn. A fresh key is sometimes the fix, but often a worn lock wears a new key quickly too, and the better answer is addressing the lock itself. We look at it in person before recommending one or the other. For a broader look at what we handle, see our overview of Kia keys.
What affects the cost of a Kia key in Hawthorne?
We do not publish numbers here because the honest answer depends on the car, and a flat figure would be wrong for half the people reading it. These are the things that actually move the cost.
- Whether the car has an immobilizer. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia needs a cut key, while an immobilizer car needs a chip programmed to it.
- The type of key: a plain blade, a flip key with a remote, or a push-button smart key. Smart keys cost more to supply.
- Add-a-key versus all keys lost. Having a working key to copy from makes the job simpler, and losing every key adds steps.
- PIN access. If a model year needs a Kia PIN from a dealer account or credentialed access, that is extra work and cost.
- Damage to the ignition or steering column, which can turn a key job into a lock replacement.
- Whether the remote or fob is genuine, and whether you want a spare made at the same visit, which saves a return trip.
- The model year, because the newest facelift years are confirmed per job and can take more time to verify.
Should you go to a Kia dealer or call a mobile locksmith?
Both are legitimate. A Kia dealer has direct access to Kia's systems and is a sound choice for a very new model, or where a particular year and trim needs dealer-level access. If we find that your car is one of those cases, we will tell you so before we start, not after.
The practical difference is where the work happens. With no working key, getting a car to a dealer can mean arranging a tow, and then the car waits in the service queue. A mobile locksmith brings the work to the car. For most Kias we see, from no-immobilizer turn-key cars through the push-button systems that current tools support, that is usually the more economical route and the more convenient one. If you want to compare, call us with the year and VIN details and ask what your car needs, then ask the dealer the same question.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We run a real storefront in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so you are not calling a lead-generation line that hands your job to whoever is free. It is one company, with no dispatch middlemen between you and the technician. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
One piece of advice that applies to any locksmith, including us: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you are entitled to ask for the number. Ask before anyone touches your car.
Kia keys around Hawthorne: Hollyglen, Moneta Gardens and beyond
Hawthorne, ZIP 90250, is a city of distinct pockets, and Kia key calls look different in each. In Hollyglen and Bodger Park, the postwar stucco single-family streets, the car is usually at the curb or in the driveway, and the question is often about a spare or a key that has worn out. In Moneta Gardens, Ramona and North Hawthorne, along with the apartment corridors on Hawthorne Boulevard, a lockout can happen anywhere the car is parked outside the building, which is why we come to the curb instead of asking you to bring the car anywhere.
ThreeSixty at South Bay, the newer gated townhome community on the west side, adds one practical wrinkle: access. If your Kia is inside the gates, tell us when you call so we can arrange entry with you. Del Aire, the unincorporated area next to Hawthorne, is also within our service area. Hawthorne's marine-layer mornings and mild temperatures have only a modest effect on locks, so weather is rarely the reason a Kia key fails here. Wear, hinges, batteries and cheap chips are.
If you are simply locked out with the key inside, that is a different and often quicker job, covered on our car lockout in Hawthorne page. For the full range of vehicle key work in the city, see car key replacement in Hawthorne, or our general Hawthorne locksmith page. If you would rather write than call, use our contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Kia key if I have no original key at all?
In most cases, yes. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia we cut a key to the lock. On an immobilizer car we program a new key through the OBD-II port, sometimes with a Kia PIN. Newer 2019-and-up smart systems are supported by current tools for most all-keys-lost work, and we confirm the newest years by VIN.
My Kia is a turn-key model from the 2010s. Does the key need programming?
Possibly not. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts the car. Only the keyless-entry remote needs programming. Because exact changeovers vary by year and VIN, we confirm before we promise anything.
Will a hardware-store copy start my Kia?
It depends on whether your car has an immobilizer. A copy will start a no-immobilizer car. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia it will not start the engine without a chip programmed to the car, and cheap cloned chips can fail intermittently.
My smart key says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Often it is just a dead battery. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob can still open the door. If a new battery does not fix it, the fob may be damaged or worn, and we can test it and replace or reprogram it.
Does Kia's anti-theft software update change my keys?
No. The update changes alarm and ignition logic but does not add an immobilizer, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed.
Do you work on Kias that were stolen and recovered?
Yes, though it is usually more than a key job. Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars often means broken steering-column shrouds and a destroyed ignition lock, and a recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock. Tell us when you call so we plan for that.
Are there cases where I would have to go to the dealer?
Some PIN and server requirements vary by model year and tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. If your car turns out to need dealer-level access, we will tell you before we start.
Do you serve areas next to Hawthorne, like Del Aire?
Yes. Del Aire is within our service area, as is the rest of Hawthorne in ZIP 90250. Overall we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work starts, and be wary of anyone who will not give it.
