Why a rental needs a different lock plan than a home you live in
A home you live in sees the same few people every day. A rental sees a new face every few nights, and each one handles your lock a handful of times, usually tired, often carrying luggage, sometimes after dark. Keys get packed by accident. Codes get passed along to a friend. A door gets pulled shut with the keys sitting on the kitchen counter. None of that is malice. It is simply what turnover does to hardware and to your control over who can get in.
Wilshire Lock & Key has worked locks across Los Angeles and Ventura counties since 1987. For hosts, the goal is predictable entry: you know who has a way in, the door opens easily for someone who has never touched it, and you can reset access quickly when something changes. This page explains how we approach that for El Monte rentals, what affects cost, and where a locksmith's role ends and yours begins.
What actually goes wrong at short-term rentals?
The same handful of problems come up again and again with vacation rentals. Most are preventable once you know to look for them.
- Key copies nobody can account for. A key handed to a cleaner, a co-host, a past property manager or an earlier guest may have been copied, and you have no way to know.
- Code creep. One permanent keypad code gets reused for months and shared well beyond the people you gave it to.
- Dead batteries or a jammed keypad at check-in, on a smart lock with no workable backup key.
- Lockbox dependence. A key lockbox on a gate or fence is only as private as its code, and that code tends to stay the same too long.
- Doors that stick. A swollen wood door makes guests lean on the handle and force the bolt, which wears out the lock.
- Lost or locked-in keys in the middle of a stay, usually at an inconvenient hour.
- Old hardware. A worn lockset that has gone loose in the door is hard to trust and sometimes hard to rekey cleanly.
How do we set up entry for a vacation rental?
We start with the door, not the gadget. A smart lock cannot fix a door that binds, and the best keypad in the world is a poor choice if the frame is out of square. Here is the usual order of work.
- Walk every way in: the front door, back door, any separate entrance to a guest unit, security screen doors, gates, and storage or utility doors that guests might need.
- Check the door and frame for alignment, swelling, loose hinge screws and a worn strike plate, because these decide whether electronic hardware will work smoothly.
- Talk through how you want guests to enter: a keypad deadbolt, an app-connected smart lock, or traditional keys with a clean rekey.
- Reset who has access. Rekeying or replacing the lock makes every old key copy useless, which is the cleanest starting point for a rental.
- Install the hardware, set your administrator access, and test it with the door open and closed, from both sides, several times.
- Show you how to add and delete codes, swap batteries, and use the mechanical or emergency backup, then cut spare keys you can keep somewhere you trust.
- Point out anything we noticed that could cause trouble later, such as a sticking door or a weak strike, so you decide what to do about it.

Call (213) 577-1366Smart lock, keypad deadbolt, or traditional keys: which suits your rental?
There is no single right answer, and we would rather tell you that than sell you the most expensive option. A smart lock installation makes the most sense when you host regularly, are often not on site, and want a separate code for each stay. A simple keypad deadbolt gives you code control without app accounts or wireless connections to troubleshoot. Traditional keys still work well for a spare room in a home where you live, as long as the lock is rekeyed whenever a key goes missing.
Smart locks have real limits. They depend on batteries, they need a door that closes squarely, and some models do not fit every door's drilling or thickness. If the door is warped or the frame is loose, we will tell you to fix that first. Whatever you choose, keep a mechanical way in as a backup, because electronics fail at the worst moments.
When a good existing lock is simply compromised because keys are floating around, a lock rekey is usually the more economical route. The lock stays, the internal pins change, and old keys stop working. If you own the whole building and rent several units, our page on locksmith service for landlords covers how to organize keys across multiple doors.
How much does locksmith work for an Airbnb cost?
We don't quote numbers on a web page because the honest answer depends on your doors. What moves the cost is fairly predictable:
- How many doors are involved, including side entrances, guest-unit doors and screen doors.
- Whether the job is a rekey, a repair, or a full replacement of worn hardware.
- The hardware itself. A basic keypad deadbolt and a feature-heavy smart lock sit in very different places.
- Door preparation. If the existing bore, thickness or alignment does not suit the new lock, the door needs adjustment first.
- How many keys you need cut, and whether you want extra spares.
- Timing. A planned appointment between bookings is usually simpler to schedule than an urgent night call.
- Distance. El Monte is about 25 miles from our Westwood base, which we factor into mobile calls.
How does code rotation work between guests?
Code rotation is mostly something you do, not something we do each turnover, and we think hosts should know that up front. On most keypad and smart locks, codes are added and removed at the lock or in the manufacturer's app. Many models let you schedule a code to start at check-in and expire at checkout. We install the lock, set up your administrator access, and walk you through the routine until it feels easy. We don't manage your calendar or your guests.
A routine that works for most hosts: give each stay its own code, remove it at checkout, keep any cleaner or co-host on a separate code you can revoke on its own, and test the lock after every battery change. Keep a physical key backup in a safe place, and treat a lost key or a change of cleaning help as a reason to rekey.
Some locks can connect to booking platforms and others cannot, and compatibility changes by brand and model. Check with the manufacturer before buying anything. We can match hardware to your door and install it properly, but the software link to your booking account is between you and the lock maker.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What happens when a guest is locked out or loses a key?
Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered every hour of every day, and our mobile vans work from a mobile locksmith model, so we come to the property. For off-hours lockouts, our 24-hour locksmith service is the same company and the same phone number. If the rental is a unit in a larger building, our apartment lockout page explains how those calls work.
Because the person standing at the door is often a guest and not the owner, we will ask for some proof that you own or control the rental, such as the listing, a lease, or a utility bill. If you are out of town, we can talk with you by phone. We won't open a door on a guest's word alone, and a reasonable host would not want us to.
If a key is truly lost, we usually recommend rekeying so that key is useless to whoever finds it. If a smart lock has died or jammed, we will diagnose whether it needs a battery, a repair or replacement. Afterward, we can cut spare keys properly so you are not relying on a single copy. Our key duplication page covers what to expect there.
What should El Monte hosts know about local housing and weather?
El Monte's housing stock shapes the work. The city is mostly postwar bungalows and small ranch homes, with a substantial renter share, many small apartment complexes, and backyard accessory units. Original mid-century locksets are still widespread on the older homes. Those locks may be worn, and the strike plates are often held with short screws. For a host, that is a reason to look at the hardware before the first booking, not after a problem.
Backyard accessory units deserve their own entry plan. If a guest stays in a back unit while someone lives in the main house, separate keys or codes keep the two from sharing access. Security screen doors and window bars are common retrofits on denser blocks, and in Five Points, screen door and deadbolt service on postwar bungalows is a regular kind of call. A guest may face two locks, a screen door and an entry door, so clear written instructions help, and each lock should work smoothly.
Summers here are hot and dry, with little coastal moderation. Wood doors and frames expand in the heat, and a swollen door can make a bolt rub, which is hard on both a mechanical deadbolt and a smart lock motor. If a door starts sticking in July, have it looked at before it wears out the lock.
We serve all of El Monte, including ZIP codes 91731 and 91732. That covers Downtown El Monte near the Valley Mall pedestrian district, Five Points, Mountain View, Norwood Village, Arden Village, and the Zamora Park area. Listings near El Monte Station, the El Monte Airport, or the southern edge toward Whittier Narrows Recreation Area are all part of that service area. If you rent an apartment or unit and are not the owner, check your lease and talk to the landlord before changing any hardware.

Call (213) 577-1366Why El Monte hosts call Wilshire Lock & Key
We keep the reasons short, because they are plain ones.
- In business since 1987, which means we have worked on the older hardware found in so many El Monte homes.
- A storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a real shop behind the van.
- One company, no dispatch middlemen. The person who answers the phone works for the same company that sends the technician.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
- Phone answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366.
A note on licensing
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins, and that includes us. A company that hesitates to give it to you is telling you something.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need to change the locks between every guest?
Usually not. If you use keypad or smart lock codes, you change the code for each stay instead. Rekey when a key is lost, when someone with a key leaves your service, or when you simply cannot account for the copies that exist.
Can you install a smart lock on any door?
Not every door. The lock has to fit the door's drilling and thickness, and the door has to close squarely. We check the door first and tell you plainly if it needs adjustment, or if a simpler keypad deadbolt is the better fit.
Will a smart lock connect to my Airbnb or booking account?
That depends on the brand and model, and it changes over time. Confirm compatibility with the manufacturer before you buy. We handle the physical fit and installation, and we can show you how the lock's own app and codes work.
A guest is locked out and I'm out of town. Can you still help?
Yes, with verification. We will ask for proof that you own or control the rental and will confirm with you by phone. We don't open a door based on the guest's say-so alone. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will walk through it.
Is a key lockbox a good way to hand over keys?
It is convenient, but it is only as private as its code, and codes tend to stay unchanged for too long. A keypad lock with a per-stay code gives you better control. If you do use a lockbox, change its code regularly and rekey if a key goes missing.
Do you work on security screen door locks?
Yes. Security screen doors and window bars are common on denser El Monte blocks, and we service the locks and deadbolts on them. For rentals, we also recommend making the screen door and entry door easy to operate together.
I rent my apartment. Can I put a smart lock on it?
Check your lease and talk to your landlord first. Many leases limit hardware changes or subletting, and we cannot give legal advice. If the landlord approves, we can advise on a lock that fits the door and can be restored later.
Can I reach you outside normal business hours?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366. You can also reach us through the contact page when it is not urgent.
