Why short-term rentals need a different locksmith plan
A home you live in has a short, stable list of people who can get through the door. A rental flips that. Strangers arrive every few days, use the lock constantly, and leave, and each stay is a chance for a copied key, a shared code, or a lockbox combination that never gets changed. The front door does more work, with less supervision, than almost any lock in a normal household.
So we encourage hosts to think about access as a system, not a single purchase: who can get in, how that access gets switched off, what happens when a guest is locked out at night, and what still works when a battery or Wi-Fi connection fails. We have worked on residential and commercial locks across Los Angeles and Ventura counties since 1987, and the rental-specific questions almost always come back to those four.
This page is written for La Puente hosts renting out a house, a room, or a unit. If you also have long-term tenants, our locksmith for landlords page covers that side.
What do La Puente hosts usually call us for?
The calls repeat, and most of them are things you can plan for before a guest ever notices a problem. Here is what we see most often from hosts and vacation-rental owners:
- Installing a smart lock or keypad deadbolt so check-in does not depend on handing over a physical key
- Resetting or rotating codes after a stay, or fixing a lock whose programming got scrambled
- Rekeying after a lost key, a key that was never returned, or a guest who drove off with one
- Guest lockouts at odd hours, including when the host is out of town
- Replacing worn original locksets and deadbolts before the first guest arrives
- Adding or fixing a lock on a detached garage, side gate, or separate entry to a room or unit
- Cutting backup keys for a cleaner, co-host, or property manager so nobody has to share the guest code
Smart lock, keypad deadbolt or lockbox: which fits a rental?
There is no single right answer. It depends on how far you live from the property, how often you turn it over, and how comfortable you are with apps.
App-connected smart locks suit hosts who want a separate code for each reservation that expires on its own. You do not hand over a key, and you can remove a code without touching the door. The tradeoffs are batteries, hub or Wi-Fi reliability, and the fact that the motor needs a door that lines up properly to throw the bolt.
A non-connected keypad deadbolt is simpler. You program codes at the lock, and it keeps working with no internet. The catch is that changing codes means doing it in person. If you can reach the property easily, that is often the more economical route.
Lockboxes with a physical key still work, but a combination that never changes is really a shared key for everyone who ever stayed. If you use one, change the combination regularly and rekey if a key goes missing.
Whichever you pick, we like to keep a conventional keyed override on the main door when the model offers one, so a dead battery is an annoyance and not a lockout. Our smart lock installation page goes deeper on setup.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366How do you handle code rotation and lost keys between guests?
Most rental security problems are habit problems, not hardware problems. A few practices cover nearly all of it.
The bigger question is when a code change is enough and when you need to rekey. A code change handles a guest who has left. A rekey handles a physical key you can no longer account for. Rekeying changes the inside of the lock so old keys stop working, and it is usually the lighter-cost option compared with replacing hardware that is otherwise sound. We cover the process on our lock rekey page.
- Create a unique code for every reservation and delete it after checkout
- Avoid birthdays, repeated digits, and simple sequences
- Give cleaners and co-hosts their own codes so you can see or revoke them separately
- Keep one host code that only you know, and change it if anyone who knew it leaves
- Check lock batteries between stays, not after a guest reports a problem
- Confirm the lock clock is correct if codes are scheduled by date and time
How we handle a rental lock job, step by step
Whether it is a planned install or a late-night call, the job follows the same order.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us which door, which lock, and whether a guest is inside or locked out.
- We ask what hardware is on the door now, whether it is smart, how many keys are out there, and what actually failed.
- We send a mobile van, or for planned work we schedule a visit when the property is empty.
- We inspect the door itself: alignment, latch, strike plate, and whether the frame can support the new hardware.
- We explain the options and what drives the cost before any work starts.
- We do the install, rekey, or repair, then test it from inside and outside with the door open and closed.
- We hand over keys, codes, and app pairing, and tell you plainly what we changed.
What affects the cost of rental lock work in La Puente?
We do not publish numbers here because the right quote depends on the door in front of us. These are the factors that move the cost up or down:
- The hardware you choose: connected smart locks, keypad deadbolts, and standard keyed sets sit in very different ranges
- How many doors or units are done in one visit
- The condition of the door and frame, since a binding or warped door may need work before new hardware sits right
- Rekeying versus replacing: when the lock is sound, rekeying is usually the lighter-cost route
- Whether app, hub, or Wi-Fi setup is part of the job
- Time of day, since after-hours and holiday calls differ from a scheduled daytime visit
- Travel distance, which matters for La Puente because our base is in Westwood
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Why hosts call Wilshire Lock & Key
We are one company, not a dispatch service passing your call to whoever is nearest. The person who answers the phone works for the business that sends the van, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans.
We answer 24 hours a day, every day of the year, which matters for a business where turnover days, holiday weekends, and late arrivals set the schedule. We are also honest about geography: La Puente is roughly 29 miles from our base, so for planned work we would rather schedule properly than pretend we are around the corner. If you have a lockout, our mobile locksmith service is built for exactly that.
What should La Puente hosts know about older tract-home doors?
La Puente is mostly single-story stucco tract homes from the 1950s, on modest lots with detached garages. Owner occupancy is high, many households are multigenerational, and apartment stock is limited and concentrated near the major corridors, including the Hacienda Boulevard corridor and the Amar Road corridor. For hosts, that shapes the work in a few practical ways.
Many original locksets on these homes are worn, and a smart lock on a tired door is a frustrating combination. The area has hot, dry summers and mild winters with no coastal salt air, so the main seasonal effect is wood doors swelling and shrinking. A door that closes cleanly in winter can drag in summer, and a motorized smart lock will struggle with it. We check alignment first and may suggest a new deadbolt installation on a worn door.
Security screen doors are a common retrofit here. Make sure the screen door latch works and does not block a keypad or trap a guest who is carrying luggage. If you rent a room inside an owner-occupied home, the room door and the front door may need separate thinking. Detached garages often hold laundry or storage and deserve their own lock.
We work in both ZIP codes, 91744 and 91746, and cover the La Puente Park area, Old Town La Puente, and the Valinda and Bassett border areas next door. If a guest is locked out of one of the few apartment-style units, our apartment lockout page explains how that works.
What should you ask any locksmith before hiring?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you hire for their license number, and be wary of anyone who dodges the question.
Also ask who will arrive, whether they will explain options and cost drivers before starting, and whether rekeying is an option or they push replacement. Short-term rental rules vary by city and county, and a locksmith does not decide them, so check requirements for your property with the right local office.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a smart lock on my La Puente rental without replacing the door?
Often yes. It depends on the existing bore holes, the thickness and condition of the door, and whether it lines up with the frame. Older wood doors that swell in summer may need adjusting first. We check it in person before recommending hardware.
How often should I change the door code for guests?
Ideally every reservation. Give each guest a unique code that expires at checkout, and delete old codes so a past guest cannot return. Cleaners and co-hosts should have their own separate codes.
Do I need to rekey after every guest?
No. Rekeying is for a physical key you cannot account for, such as a lost key, an unreturned key, or a former cleaner who held one. Keypad and smart lock codes can be changed without rekeying.
A guest is locked out and I am out of town. What should I do?
Call (213) 577-1366. We will confirm details with you, the owner, before opening a door for a guest. Then we send a mobile van. Our house lockout service handles the entry work.
What if the smart lock battery dies during a stay?
If your lock has a keyed override, the guest or a key holder can use it. Some models also have an external power option. If neither works, call us any hour. We would also suggest checking batteries between stays.
Can you handle several properties or units in one visit?
Yes, we can plan a visit to cover several doors, whether in La Puente or the nearby Valinda and Bassett border areas. Grouping work usually helps cost, since travel is shared.
Do you work on garage and screen door locks?
We can look at detached garage locks and security screen door latches along with the main door, and tell you what is worth repairing. Share the details when you call.
What license should a California locksmith have?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you consider for their license number before they start work.
