What do Nissan owners in Duarte usually need?

Most Nissan key calls from Duarte follow how people actually live and park here. The bulk of the city is postwar single-family housing along the Huntington Drive flats, so a lot of Altimas, Sentras, Rogues and Frontiers sit in driveways and on the street overnight. A missing key tends to show itself at the curb, when someone is about to leave for work and the key is nowhere. Townhome and apartment complexes near Huntington Drive and the City of Hope campus add shared lots and visitor parking, where keys get dropped, locked inside, or never had a spare made in the first place.

The City of Hope area creates its own pattern. People spend long days on a medical campus, or stay in nearby apartment and visitor housing, and a car key is easy to misplace when your mind is on something far more important. We also hear from drivers who leave a car at the Duarte/City of Hope A Line park-and-ride and come back to find the key gone or the fob dead. In both cases the car is not in a convenient place for a tow, which is one reason mobile service makes sense for Nissans here.

The requests we see most often for Nissans fall into a handful of buckets:

  • A lost key when you still have one working key, which is the easier and more economical situation to solve
  • All keys lost, with nothing to copy from
  • A worn or broken key blade on a higher-mileage car or truck
  • A dead or unresponsive Intelligent Key or fob
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but will not start the engine
  • A lockout with the key inside, which has its own page at car lockout service in Duarte

How does mobile Nissan key service work at the curb?

You call (213) 577-1366 and a person answers, any hour, any day of the year. We do not route you through a call center that resells the job to whoever is closest. We run our own mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Duarte is roughly 33 miles from there, so we will be straight with you about the drive and give you an arrival estimate when we know where the van is.

Here is what the visit looks like from your side of the curb.

  1. Tell us the model, the year, and whether any working key exists. Photos of the key or fob help if you have a spare to compare.
  2. We confirm what the car needs, because the right answer depends on the immobilizer generation and sometimes on the VIN. If something is unclear, we say so instead of guessing.
  3. On arrival, we verify that you own the vehicle with ID and registration or other proof, and we match that to the car.
  4. We cut the blade by code or by hand, depending on what is available, and prepare the transponder or fob.
  5. We program the key through the OBD-II port with professional tools, then test it: door locks, remote functions, and starting the engine more than once.
  6. If you had other keys that still work, we make sure they are still recognized. You leave with keys that you have seen start the car.

Which Nissan key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Nissan did not move to new key technology all at once, and that is why a quick phone description matters. Two Nissans from the same year can need different keys. This is the short version of how it runs, and we always confirm against the actual car before promising anything.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, Nissan rolled out its NATS immobilizer across the line, mostly using a Texas 4D60 fixed-crypto chip. That covers the Altima from 1999 to 2004, the Sentra from 2000 to 2006, the Pathfinder through 2004, and the Frontier from 2002 to 2004. The 1999-2003 Maxima is a genuine exception: catalogs split between 4D60 and a Philips ID41, so we verify that one in person rather than trust a single listing.

A Philips ID46 (Hitag-2) era follows. The Murano gets it from 2003, the Maxima and Titan in 2004, the Pathfinder and Frontier in 2005, the Altima in 2005-2006, and the Sentra and Versa in 2007. The Frontier is worth a note because it kept a plain bladed ID46 key all the way through 2021.

Intelligent Key, Nissan's push-button or twist-knob system, was adopted unevenly. The 2007 Altima made push-button start standard on every trim. The 2007-2008 Maxima used a twist-knob column switch instead. The 2008-2013 Rogue offered a twist-knob Intelligent Key above a bladed base key.

A short ID47 (Hitag-3) window covers the 2013-2015 Altima, and, depending on which catalog you believe, the early R52 Pathfinder. Because those sources conflict, we treat the Pathfinder as something to confirm by VIN.

After that, Nissan moved to the 4A (Hitag-AES) platform. It showed up first on the 2014 Rogue smart fob, though catalogs list a bladed flip key for the base Rogue S through 2020. It then arrived on the 2015-2016 Murano, Titan, Maxima and Altima, and it is standard on the KR5TXN-series fobs used across 2019 and newer models.

  • Older NATS cars: a transponder key with a metal blade, programmed to the car
  • ID46 era: still a transponder key in many cases, with Intelligent Key on some models
  • Newer cars: smart fobs with their own FCC and IC identifiers that must match what the car expects

What if you have lost every Nissan key?

All keys lost is the situation people dread, and it is more manageable than it sounds on most Nissans. Nissan security is built around the body control module (BCM). On older NATS cars, including 4D60, ID41 and most ID46 years, a four-digit PIN derived from the BCM lets professional locksmith tools add keys through the OBD-II port, even when no key exists.

Newer models use a rolling scheme. The BCM provides a 22-digit PrePIN, which gets converted into a 20-digit PIN. Pro-tool makers, Abrites among them, document this, and the conversion is usually handled by the tool's own calculator or an online service. That adds a step but not a mystery.

The harder cases are recent keyless Nissans with locked RH850-type BCM or HFM modules. On those, all-keys-lost can mean reading the module on a bench, using equipment such as the Abrites NN010, or running an online calculation rather than a quick session at the curb. If your car falls into that group, we will tell you on the phone or at the car, and explain whether the work can be done where it is parked.

The other honest limit is the newest generation. Aftermarket tool coverage for 2022 and newer trucks and SUVs, and for the 2025 and newer Murano, is still maturing. Some of those jobs may be dealer-only or specialist-only until tool support catches up. If yours is one of them, we would rather tell you that than make a trip and leave you with nothing. What affects the cost of a Nissan key in Duarte?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car and the situation. Here is what moves the cost up or down, so you can judge any quote you get, ours included.

  • Key type: a basic transponder key and an Intelligent Key or smart fob are very different parts, and the parts cost differs accordingly.
  • Model and year: the immobilizer generation determines the tools, the procedure, and whether a PIN or bench read is needed.
  • Whether you have a working key: adding a copy to a car that still has a key is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
  • Blade cutting: a standard cut is simpler than a high-security or worn-ignition situation where the blade has to be matched carefully.
  • Fob compatibility: a fob ordered online with the wrong FCC or IC numbers is a common reason pairing fails, and then you have paid for a part that does not work.
  • Location and timing: Duarte is a drive from our base, and after-hours calls involve a different level of effort than a daytime appointment.
  • Extra work: if the ignition cylinder is worn or a steering-column lock has failed, that is a separate repair from the key itself.

Should you use the Nissan dealer or a locksmith?

Both are legitimate options, and there are cases where the dealer is the right call. For the newest Nissans, especially 2022 and newer trucks and SUVs and the 2025 Murano, dealer or specialist service may be the only route right now because aftermarket support is still catching up. If we cannot do your car properly, we will say so.

For most other Nissans, a mobile locksmith is usually the more economical route and the more convenient one. The dealer generally needs the car on site, which can mean a tow if you have no key. We come to the car, whether it is in your driveway, at your apartment lot, or at the park-and-ride. We also cut and program at the same visit rather than ordering a key and scheduling a second trip.

Whoever you hire, ask for their California locksmith company license. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and any reputable shop will tell you the number without fuss. Asking is simply good practice, and it applies to us as much as anyone.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Nissan in Duarte?

We have been in business since 1987, and that is long enough to have seen Nissan go through nearly every era above, from fixed-crypto NATS keys to Intelligent Keys to today's smart fobs. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Duarte is part of a regular service area, not a one-off.

We are one company: a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and our own mobile vans. When you call, you are not talking to a dispatch middleman who adds a layer between you and the person at your car. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and that matters most when a job is tricky: a conflicting catalog entry, a locked module, a car that does not fit the usual pattern.

The phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year, at (213) 577-1366. If your Nissan is stuck at a curb at midnight, someone picks up. You can also reach us through the contact page if you would rather write.

Is it your key, or something else on the Nissan?

Plenty of calls that start as a key problem turn out to be something nearby, and it saves money to sort that out first. These are the patterns we see on Nissans:

  • Steering-column lock failure: on 2007-2014 push-button models such as the Altima, Maxima and Murano, the electronic steering column lock can fail and leave a no-start with a flashing key light. It looks like a key problem but is not.
  • Security light stuck on: if the NATS light stays on solid, the immobilizer is not reading the chip, often because it is worn or a clone was made badly.
  • Worn ignition wafers and key blades: on high-mileage bladed-key cars and trucks, the key turns roughly or sticks, and a new key alone may not help.
  • Dead fob battery: if the car says key not detected, hold the fob against the start button or knob. That often still works, and a battery change may be all you need.
  • Hardware-store copies: a blade cut without a transponder opens the doors but will not start the engine.
  • Wrong fob online: used or aftermarket fobs whose FCC ID and IC numbers do not match the original will refuse to pair.

Nissan key service across Duarte

Duarte's ZIP code is 91010, and our service covers it from the Huntington Drive and Buena Vista Street corridors up to the foothills. On the flats, we are often at older single-family homes and townhome complexes near Huntington Drive, where a car is parked in a driveway or a shared lot and the key problem is simple and usually solvable on the spot.

On Duarte Mesa and in the Fish Canyon, Mel Canyon and Spinks Canyon areas, lots are larger and the homes are often custom builds on hillsides. Driveways can be long, steep or gated, so tell us when you call if there is a gate code or a tricky approach. The same goes for the Royal Oaks neighborhood, where we like to know where the car is before we arrive.

Weather plays a small role. Duarte sits against the San Gabriel foothills with hot, dry summers and periodic Santa Ana winds coming out of the canyons. Heat can wear on key fobs and batteries left in a parked car, and wind-blown grit can get into exterior locks and make a key feel stiff. That is a good moment to replace a worn blade before it breaks off.

Around the City of Hope campus and the Duarte/City of Hope A Line station, the usual requests are an apartment or visitor-housing lockout, or a replacement key for a car left at the park-and-ride. For the wider set of services we offer in town, see our Duarte locksmith page, and for the general overview of car keys here, see car key replacement in Duarte.

Fobs, spares and what to do before you call

If your Nissan uses a smart fob, a new one is not just a plastic shell. It has to match the car's expected FCC and IC identifiers, and it has to be paired with the BCM. If you already bought a fob online, keep the packaging and show us the numbers on the back. We will tell you whether it can work. More detail is on our Duarte key fob replacement page.

To make the call efficient, have these ready: the make, model and year, the VIN visible through the windshield, how many keys you have, and where the car is parked. If you can, snap a photo of the key or fob. For a deeper look at the brand, our Nissan car key guide goes through model years in more detail.

If you do have one working key, do not wait. Making a spare while a key still exists is almost always simpler and more economical than recovering from all keys lost later.

Frequently asked questions

Do you come to me in Duarte, or do I need to bring the car?

We come to you. Our mobile vans work at homes, apartment lots, the City of Hope area, and the A Line park-and-ride. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us where the car is.

Can you make a Nissan key if I have lost every key?

On most Nissans, yes. Older NATS cars use a PIN from the body control module that pro tools can work with through the OBD-II port. Some newer keyless models with locked modules may need a bench read or online calculation, and we tell you up front if yours does.

Are there Nissans you cannot do?

Possibly the newest ones. Aftermarket support for 2022 and newer trucks and SUVs, and for the 2025 and newer Murano, is still maturing, so those may be dealer-only or specialist-only for now. We confirm by VIN and tell you honestly.

My Nissan says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?

Not always. A dead fob battery is common. Hold the fob against the start button or the twist knob, which often still starts the car. If that works, you probably need a battery, not a new fob.

Why did my copied key open the doors but not start the car?

Most likely the copy was cut as a plain blade without a transponder chip, or the chip was not programmed to the car. The immobilizer will not let the engine run without a recognized chip. We can program a correct transponder key.

Is it okay to buy a Nissan fob online and have you program it?

It can work, but the FCC and IC numbers must match your original. Wrong numbers are a common reason pairings fail. Send us the numbers before you buy, or bring us the fob so we can check it.

How do I know a locksmith is legitimate in California?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before the work starts, and be wary of anyone who dodges the question.

Will a flashing key light always mean a bad key?

No. On 2007-2014 push-button Altimas, Maxima and Murano models, an electronic steering column lock failure can cause a no-start with a flashing key light that looks like a key issue. We check for that before programming anything.
