What do Kia owners in Duarte usually need?

Most Kia calls from Duarte fall into a few buckets: a key that is lost, a flip-key that has come apart, a smart fob the car no longer sees, or a key locked inside the car. Where it happens matters as much as what happened. Duarte runs from flat postwar streets along Huntington Drive up to hillside lots on Duarte Mesa and in the Fish, Mel and Spinks Canyon areas, and cars end up parked in very different situations.

Around the City of Hope campus, visitors and people in short-term housing park in lots and complexes, often a long way from a spare key. Commuters leave cars at the Duarte/City of Hope A Line park-and-ride, and a fob that slips out of a pocket or a battery that dies before the ride home is a realistic way to end up stuck. In the townhome and apartment complexes near Huntington Drive, the car is usually in a shared lot, so we bring the work to wherever it is parked.

On the larger hillside lots, the car is more likely to be in a driveway or garage, which makes cutting and programming easy to do on site. Either way, you do not have to tow a Kia anywhere to get a working key. If you want the general picture first, our Duarte car key replacement overview covers every make; this page is specifically about Kia.

How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?

Our vans carry key-cutting and programming equipment, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 33 miles from Duarte. For a car in Duarte we send a mobile technician rather than asking you to bring the car to us. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us the model, the year, whether the car has a turn-key ignition or a push-button start, and how many working keys you have left.
  2. Have the VIN ready. It is on the dash at the base of the windshield and on the driver's door jamb. The VIN lets us confirm which key system your car uses instead of guessing from the model name.
  3. We confirm you own the car. Expect to show ID and registration or another proof of ownership before any key is made.
  4. The technician comes to the car. The key is cut to match the lock or the VIN, and if your Kia has an immobilizer, the new key is programmed through the OBD-II port.
  5. We test everything before we leave: starting the engine, turning the ignition, locking and unlocking, the remote buttons, and any spare key we made.

Which kind of Kia key do you have?

Kia's US key history falls into three arcs, and which one your car belongs to decides almost everything about cost and difficulty. Here it is in plain terms.

The defining Kia quirk is the no-immobilizer era. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022 models, have no immobilizer at all. This is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. A correctly cut key starts those cars, with no transponder programming needed. Only the keyless-entry remote, where one is fitted, needs OBD programming.

  • Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chips where an immobilizer was fitted. Some 2001-2006 models use Texas 4D-60 chips.
  • Mid-2000s through the mid-2010s: Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chips on immobilizer-equipped cars.
  • 2011-2021, and some 2022, turn-key cars: no immobilizer, so any correctly cut key starts the car.
  • Push-button trims: these always carried full immobilizers. They moved from ID46 smart keys in the early 2010s to Hitag 3 / ID47 from roughly 2016 to 2020.
  • 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD: NXP Hitag-AES '4A' and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) smart systems.
  • 2022 model year: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during this year. At least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent. We verify the exact changeover by year and VIN rather than assuming.

How are immobilizer Kias programmed?

Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, which comes from the VIN, a dealer/KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access.

The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current pro tools for add-a-key work and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and by tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. If your Kia is on the edge of that range, we will tell you plainly what we can do at the curb before we start.

One more point comes up often. Kia's anti-theft software update, rolled out after the theft wave, does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it does not change how your keys are cut or programmed.

What if I have lost every Kia key?

All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is, but the answer depends on the car. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, a new key can be cut from the VIN or the lock itself, and since there is no transponder to teach, the car simply starts. If the car has a remote, that is programmed separately.

On an immobilizer Kia, we program a new key through the OBD-II port. On some 2010s models that can be done without a PIN. On others we need a Kia PIN from one of the sources above before the car will accept a key. On 2019-and-newer smart systems, current pro tools handle most all-keys-lost jobs, but the details vary by model year and tool.

Where a particular car cannot be done properly at the curb, we will say so and explain the dealer route rather than start a job we cannot finish. If you are in that spot now, our page on lost car key replacement in Duarte walks through the process for all makes.

What about theft damage, worn locks and broken fobs?

Not every Kia call is about a lost key. These are the problems we see most often on Kias, and what each one usually means.

  • Theft-attempt damage on 2011-2022 turn-key cars: broken steering-column shrouds and destroyed ignition locks from the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. A stolen-recovered car usually needs a new ignition lock, not just a key.
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage cars: the key sticks or will not turn. A new key sometimes helps, but a worn lock may need to be serviced or replaced.
  • Broken flip-key hinges, cracked shells and worn buttons: often the electronics inside are fine and the fob can be rebuilt or replaced.
  • Dead smart-fob batteries: the car says 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery before assuming the fob has failed.
  • Hardware-store copies: they start no-immobilizer Kias fine, but will not start immobilizer-equipped cars without programming.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that fail intermittently. If a key works one day and not the next, the chip is a likely suspect.

What affects the cost of a Kia key in Duarte?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost up or down.

  • Immobilizer or not: a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia needs only a cut key, which is usually the more economical route. An immobilizer car adds chip programming.
  • Key type: a basic turn key, a flip-key with remote buttons, and a push-button smart fob are different parts with different costs.
  • Chip and system generation: older ID46 cars, Hitag 3 / ID47 cars and the 2019-and-newer AES smart systems do not need the same equipment or the same effort.
  • PIN requirement: some models need a Kia PIN from the VIN, a dealer/KDealer account or NASTF-credentialed access, and that adds a step.
  • All keys lost versus adding a spare: starting from zero keys takes more work than cloning or adding to a key you still have.
  • Damage: a destroyed ignition lock or broken column shroud means repairs on top of the key itself.
  • Hour and location: a late-night call to a car on a hillside lot is a different job from a daytime visit to a driveway on a flat street.

Should I go to the Kia dealer or call you?

A dealer is a fair option, and for some situations it is the right one. Dealers have direct access to Kia's systems, and on the newest facelift years, where requirements are confirmed per job, they can be the more certain route. We will say so honestly if your car falls into that group.

The difference is logistics. Most dealers need the car on their lot, which means a tow if you have no working key, plus waiting for an appointment and for parts. We come to the car, cut and program on the spot where the car's system allows it, and can do it outside business hours. For a no-immobilizer Kia that needs only a cut key, going to a dealer is rarely necessary.

If you want a second opinion first, call us with your VIN. We would rather tell you what your car needs than sell you something it does not.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Kia?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans on the road. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us directly, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. We are one company, with no dispatch middleman passing your job to whoever is free.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees our key work. Whatever your Kia needs, a quick call with the year and VIN will tell us what we are dealing with.

One piece of advice for any locksmith you call: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask to see it. That applies to us and to everyone else.

Kia key service across Duarte

We serve all of Duarte, ZIP 91010, with the same service whether you are on a flat street or up a canyon road. That includes the Huntington Drive and Buena Vista Street corridors, the Royal Oaks neighborhood, the City of Hope campus area, Duarte Mesa, and the Fish, Mel and Spinks Canyon areas.

Duarte sits against the San Gabriel foothills, with hot, dry summers and periodic Santa Ana winds that push grit out of the canyons. Those conditions are hard on exterior locks, and a key that already sticks tends to show it first. If your Kia key has been getting harder to turn, replace it before it breaks off.

For other car-key situations here, see our Duarte car lockout service, our Duarte key fob replacement, and the Kia key page for make-wide detail. For other makes, start with our car keys hub. You can also contact us or go to our home page for the full list of services.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Kia key if I have no spare?

Usually yes. On a no-immobilizer turn-key Kia, we cut a key from the VIN or the lock. On an immobilizer Kia, we program a new key through the OBD-II port. Some cars need a PIN first, and the newest facelift years are confirmed per job. We will tell you before we start.

Does my Kia need transponder programming?

It depends on the year and ignition type. Most 2011-2021 and some 2022 turn-key Kias have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts them. Push-button trims always have immobilizers, and so do other immobilizer-equipped cars. Give us your VIN and we will confirm.

Will Kia's anti-theft software update change how my key works?

No. The update changes alarm and ignition logic, but it does not add an immobilizer. It does not change how keys are cut or programmed, so key replacement works the same way as before.

My Kia says 'key not detected.' Is the fob broken?

Often the battery is just dead. The hidden emergency blade still opens the door, so you can get in. Try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, the fob may need programming or replacement, and we can check that at the car.

Will a hardware-store copy start my Kia?

On a no-immobilizer Kia, a copy that is cut correctly will start the car. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia, it will turn the lock but will not start the car without chip programming. A copy also will not run the remote buttons.

Do I have to take my Kia to the dealer for a new key?

Not in most cases. We come to the car and handle cutting and programming on site. Some of the newest facelift years are confirmed per job, and if one cannot be done at the curb, we will tell you honestly and explain the dealer route.

What do you need from me to make a Kia key?

The car's year, model and VIN, plus ID and proof you own the car, such as registration. We ask for ownership proof on every key job. If you are not sure about the key type, describe the ignition and we will work it out.

Can you replace a Kia ignition after a theft attempt?

Yes. Stolen-recovered turn-key Kias from the 2011-2022 range usually need a new ignition lock, and the steering-column shrouds are often broken as well. We can look at the damage and quote the work before we begin.
