What do Honda owners in Claremont usually need?
Most Honda calls here fall into a few groups: a worn key that sticks in the ignition, a spare that was never made, a cracked remote head, a smart fob that stopped being detected, and the loss of every key. Which group you are in usually comes down to model year, and that decides how simple the job is.
Where it happens matters too. Claremont is a college town, and around The Claremont Colleges and the off-campus student housing nearby, keys get lost, shared between roommates, or locked inside a car that sits parked all day. In Claremont Village, people working a shift in the shops and offices leave a car at the curb for hours, so a key lost at lunch becomes a stranded car by evening. Commuters who use the Claremont Depot Metrolink park-and-ride leave the car even longer, and a key left on the seat is something you only discover at the end of a long day.
If you only need a door opened, see our Claremont car lockout service. If you need a key made or programmed, read on.
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
The car is the thing that has to be programmed, so we bring the equipment to it. Our mobile vans carry key blanks, cutting machines and programmers, and the work happens at your driveway, campus-area curb or Depot parking spot. Claremont is about 44 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and we will tell you on the phone how we plan to reach you rather than guess.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, and what you still have: no keys, one key, or a fob that simply misbehaves.
- We confirm the key type. For most Hondas the model and year settle it. Where the data for a given year is unclear, we confirm by VIN or by looking at the car in person before promising anything.
- We verify that the car is yours. Expect to show ID and registration or title that matches the vehicle. A locksmith who skips this step is not doing you a favor.
- We cut the blade on the van to fit your locks, using the right blank for your key type.
- We program through the OBD-II port. Every Honda immobilizer era programs through the diagnostic port with professional equipment, and on most models there is no manufacturer PIN code to wait on.
- We test everything: engine starts, door locks, trunk, remote buttons, and proximity start on smart keys. Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory keys get matched to the correct slot before we leave.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Honda added immobilizer chips model by model, not all at once, so your era depends on your exact model. The short version:
- Plain mechanical keys: several US Hondas had no chip into the early 2000s, such as the Civic through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. A correctly cut copy starts them, which is a main reason those years still top theft lists.
- First chip era: a fixed-code Megamos 13 chip on the Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004.
- Second chip era: the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip on the 2003 Accord; the 2005 CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot; the 2006 Ridgeline and Civic; and the 2009 Fit.
- Honda G chip (ID47/Hitag 3): it starts with the 2013 Accord and spreads through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
- Smart proximity keys: these became standard at each model's following redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs, on the Accord from 2018, the Civic from 2022, and the CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.
What if I have lost every Honda key?
It is stressful, but on a Honda it is usually workable. Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars: every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port, and Honda does not generally require NASTF SDRM credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work.
There are honest caveats. On the earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU. That takes longer than a simple add-a-key, and we say so up front.
On the newest Hitag AES 4A platform, aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before quoting, and if your car lands in that group we will tell you rather than start a job we cannot finish.
If you still have one working key, do not wait until it is the last one. Adding a key is simpler than starting from nothing. Our car key replacement in Claremont page and the lost car key replacement page cover both situations.
What affects the cost of a Honda key in Claremont?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the same Honda can be a simple job or a long one. These are the things that move the cost:
- Key type: a plain mechanical key, a transponder key, a remote-head key and a smart fob involve different parts and different programming work.
- Model year and platform: older chip eras are routine, while the newest Hitag AES platform needs current tools.
- Add-a-key versus all keys lost: starting from nothing takes more steps than adding to a working key.
- Extended procedures: some early Megamos-13 all-keys-lost jobs need bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU.
- Memory matching: Driver 1 / Driver 2 keys on Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims must be tied to the right slot.
- The key or fob itself: we steer away from low-quality clones, because they tend to fail intermittently.
- Location and hour: a call to Claremont at night or on a holiday involves different travel and scheduling than a weekday visit.

Call (213) 577-1366Should I use the dealer or a locksmith for a Honda key?
A dealer is a fair choice in some cases. For the newest model years on the Hitag AES 4A platform, the dealer may be the only route until aftermarket tools catch up, and we will say so. For most other Hondas, a mobile locksmith is usually the more economical route, mainly because the car does not have to be moved. That matters most on an all-keys-lost job, where the car may not be drivable at all.
With a dealer, you bring the car, prove ownership and work around their service schedule. With us, we come to the car and work at the curb. Neither is wrong. It depends on your car's year and how soon you need to be moving.
What Honda key problems do we see most?
Honda owners run into a fairly predictable set of problems. If one sounds familiar, you can usually tell how serious it is before you call. For fob-specific work, see our key fob replacement in Claremont page.
- Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning. Get a fresh key cut early, before it fails in the lock.
- Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs (through 2000-2001): any hardware-store copy starts them, which is why they are theft targets. Worth knowing if you own one.
- Cracked remote-head shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models: a good moment to replace the key before it fails completely.
- Dead smart-fob batteries: the dash says 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. Try a fresh battery first.
- Hardware-store copies with no transponder: they open the doors but will not start the engine.
- Cloned or aftermarket chips: low-quality ones fail intermittently, which is maddening to diagnose.
- A flashing green key (immobilizer) light: this points to an antenna-ring or chip fault and needs diagnosis, not a guess.
Honda key service across Claremont neighborhoods
We serve all of Claremont, ZIP 91711, from the Village to the foothills. That includes Claremont Village and Village West, the Claremont Colleges area, Claraboya, Padua Hills, Pilgrim Place, Towne Ranch, Arbol Verde, the Russian Village District and the North Claremont foothills.
Hillside homes in Claraboya often mean a car parked on a slope, and a lockout or lost key there is easier to handle with a van that comes to the driveway than with a tow. In the Russian Village District and other historic neighborhoods, owners tend to value period details, and we respect that if you also have house hardware questions. Summers are hot and dry, so if a key is locked inside a car in a sun-baked lot, tell us when you call and we will treat it with the urgency it needs.
Parked near California Botanic Garden, Claremont Hills Wilderness Park, Padua Hills Theatre or The Webb Schools? We come to wherever the Honda is. Our Claremont service page lists everything else we do in town.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Honda?
We have been in business since 1987, and we are one company, not a call center that hands your job to whoever is nearest. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us directly, around the clock.
- Storefront plus mobile vans: a real shop at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood backs the vans that come to you.
- No dispatch middlemen: the people who answer the phone are the same company that does the work.
- David's oversight: our owner and lead technician, David, oversees the work.
- Broad coverage: we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Claremont is part of a routine service area.
- Straight answers: if your Honda is dealer-only, we say so.
A note on licensing
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins. That includes us. A legitimate company will not hesitate to answer, and it is a good habit with anyone who works on your car or your home. For a broader overview of Honda keys, see our Honda key guide, or reach us through our contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Honda key if I have lost every key?
In most cases, yes. Hondas program through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Some early Megamos-13 cars (roughly 1998-2004) need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest models can be dealer-only. We confirm before quoting.
Do I need a PIN code from Honda to program a new key?
On most models, no. Honda is one of the friendlier brands for aftermarket work, and we do not typically wait on a manufacturer PIN. We confirm what your specific car needs when you call.
Why does my copied Honda key open the door but not start the car?
The copy was most likely cut without a transponder chip, or the chip was never programmed to the car. Most Hondas from the late 1990s onward need a programmed chip to start. Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs from the early 2000s and earlier are the exception.
My Honda says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?
Not always. A dead fob battery is the most common cause. The hidden emergency blade still opens the door, so you are not locked out. If a fresh battery does not help, we can test the fob and the car.
How do I know which Honda key I need?
It depends on model and year, because Honda rolled out chips model by model. Tell us both when you call. If the data is unclear for your year, we confirm by VIN or in person before cutting or programming.
Is my newer Honda dealer-only for keys?
Possibly, if it is among the newest model years on the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023). Current tools cover most of them, but we check coverage first and tell you if the dealer is the only option.
Do you come to Claremont at night?
Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans serve Claremont and the surrounding area.
What do I need to show you before you make a key?
Photo ID and proof the car is yours, such as registration or title matching the vehicle. We ask every time, because it protects you as the owner.
