The 2022–2024 NX uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus NX key guide.

Second-generation NX on the 'B9' DST-AES smart key (fobs HYQ14FLC 315 MHz / HYQ14FLD 434 MHz — matched per vehicle). All-keys-lost requires server-authenticated specialist programming (e.g., Abrites TN016 with an online connection) or the dealer — not every shop covers these yet.
What kind of key does the 2022 Lexus NX use?
The 2022 NX is a second-generation model, and it uses a smart-proximity key with push-to-start. The chip family is DST-AES, the 'B9' smart key in the 8A family. That is an encrypted system, not the older fixed-code chip you could clone in a few minutes. Our reference sources for this setup are American Key Supply and Abrites, and the chip family is verified rather than assumed.
The fobs for this generation are the HYQ14FLC, which runs at 315 MHz, and the HYQ14FLD, which runs at 434 MHz. Those two look alike but are not interchangeable, and the right one is matched to your specific vehicle. Ordering a fob off a listing that only says 'Lexus NX' is how people end up with a key that cannot be programmed to their car.
Your fob also carries a mechanical backup key. That matters because it means a dead fob battery does not have to mean a stranded owner, and it means a replacement involves both the electronic side and the physical key.
- Key type: smart-proximity fob with push-to-start
- Chip family: DST-AES, 'B9' smart key (8A family)
- Two fob variants, 315 MHz and 434 MHz, matched per vehicle
- Mechanical backup key included in the system
Do you need a duplicate or an all-keys-lost replacement?
These are two different jobs on this NX, and the difference is large. If you still have a working original key, a duplicate is possible. The original key needs to be present, and the new fob is programmed through the OBD port. That is the more straightforward route, and usually the more economical one.
If every key is gone, an all-keys-lost replacement is still possible on this vehicle, but it is not something every shop can do. Per our data, it requires server-authenticated specialist programming, for example Abrites TN016 equipment with an online connection, or the dealer. Programming through the OBD port also requires NASTF SDRM access, which is the secure vehicle-data registry used for this kind of work.
So if you have one fob left, do not wait until it fails. Making a second key while the first still works keeps you out of the harder, more involved scenario.
How we handle a 2022 NX key job
We are a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood with mobile vans, and the same company answers the phone and sends the technician. David oversees the work. Here is how a typical NX call goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what you have: one working fob, a dead fob, or nothing. Have your VIN ready.
- We confirm the correct fob variant for your vehicle, because the 315 MHz and 434 MHz versions are matched per car.
- We tell you plainly which route applies: duplicate from your existing key, or all-keys-lost with specialist programming. If a case needs the dealer, we say so before you commit to anything.
- The mechanical backup key is prepared and the new fob is programmed through the OBD port.
- We test the result, including push-to-start and that the car recognizes the fob, before we finish.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a 2022 NX key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on your situation. These are the factors that move the cost on this model:
- Duplicate versus all keys lost. Having an original key to work from is the biggest single factor.
- The fob itself. Smart fobs cost more than bladed keys, and the correct frequency variant has to be sourced for your car.
- Specialist programming. All-keys-lost work needs server-authenticated equipment and an online connection, which adds to the job.
- Condition of the old fob. A water-damaged or crushed fob usually cannot be reused, so it is a full replacement rather than a repair.
- Where the car is. A mobile visit and a drop-off at the storefront are different jobs.
What we confirm by VIN rather than assume
The data on this year is verified, but one thing still gets settled per vehicle: which fob variant your NX needs. We confirm that by VIN and, where needed, in person, rather than guessing from the model year. We also tell you honestly if your situation is one where the dealer is the right route.
Before hiring any locksmith, ask for their California BSIS LCO license, since the state requires locksmith companies to hold one. For general background, see our car key hub, the Lexus key page, and the Lexus NX overview. If you would rather talk it through, use our contact page or call.
Frequently asked questions
My 2022 NX says 'key not detected.' Is the fob dead?
Often it is the fob battery. A dead smart-fob battery is the most common reason this message appears. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob may be water-damaged or crushed, and that is when replacement comes into play.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
It is possible on this vehicle, but it needs server-authenticated specialist programming or the dealer, and not every shop covers it. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will tell you honestly which route fits.
Do you need my original key to make a copy?
For a duplicate, yes. An original key needs to be present. Without one, the job becomes an all-keys-lost replacement, which is more involved.
Is a smart key for the NX more expensive than a regular car key?
Yes. Lost-fob replacement costs more than bladed keys because the fob is an encrypted electronic part that has to be matched and programmed to your car.
Is there a physical key inside the fob?
Yes. The system includes a mechanical backup key, so there is a physical key component in addition to the electronic fob.
Why does the fob frequency matter?
This generation uses the HYQ14FLC at 315 MHz or the HYQ14FLD at 434 MHz, matched per vehicle. The wrong one will not work, so we confirm by VIN before ordering.
