The 2001–2005 IS uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Lexus IS key guide.

IS300: 4C chip on the short laser-cut TOY48 blade. All-keys-lost on the earliest cars can require an immobilizer ECU reset rather than a quick OBD add — confirmed by year and VIN.
What kind of key does a 2001 Lexus IS use?
The 2001 IS is not a push-to-start car. It uses a traditional metal key with a transponder chip hidden in the plastic head. The chip family is 4C, and on the IS300 it sits on the short laser-cut TOY48 blade. That blade has a milled track cut into the side of the key instead of the familiar jagged edge, so it has to be cut on the right kind of machine.
What that means for you: the key has two jobs. The blade must turn the ignition cylinder, and the chip must be recognized by the car's immobilizer. If either one fails, the engine will not run. A key that turns the lock but has no matching chip may crank and then die, or not crank at all.
The car also has a mechanical backup key. That is useful to know, because the backup can often open the door and turn the ignition lock even when the transponder side of things is not working. It will not necessarily start the engine, though.
Duplicate key or all keys lost: what is different?
For this setup, the two situations are handled quite differently, and the difference matters for both time and cost.
If you still have a working key, we can copy from it. For this year, an original key is needed for duplication. We cut the blade to match and program the new chip to the car through the OBD port. No special NASTF secure-data access is required for this programming method.
If every key is gone, an all-keys-lost job is still possible. We cut a key from the ignition or door lock, then deal with the immobilizer. The honest wrinkle is on the earliest cars: instead of a quick OBD add, an all-keys-lost job can call for an immobilizer ECU reset. Whether yours needs that depends on the specific car, and we confirm it by year and VIN rather than guess.
- Working key in hand: copy the blade, program the 4C chip over OBD.
- No working key: cut a key to the lock, then add a key to the car, possibly through an immobilizer ECU reset.
- Hardware-store copies: they cut the blade but have no chip, so they will not start the car.
How we handle a 2001 IS key job
Here is how a typical call goes. We keep it simple because the car is simple compared with newer ones.
- You call (213) 577-1366. We ask the year, model, and VIN, and whether you have any working key.
- We tell you which path applies: duplicate from an existing key or all keys lost.
- Our van comes to your car, or you bring it to our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood if it is drivable and you would rather do it there.
- We cut the laser-cut TOY48 blade, check that it turns the ignition and door locks smoothly, and program the 4C chip.
- We start the car with the new key and confirm every key you hand us works before we leave.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2001 Lexus IS key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the job decides the cost. These are the real factors:
- Whether you have a working key. Copying from an existing key is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost.
- Whether the immobilizer needs an ECU reset. On the earliest cars this adds work beyond a quick OBD key add.
- The condition of the lock. High-mileage cars can have worn ignition wafers, and a new key will not turn a worn cylinder reliably. Repairing or replacing wafers is extra work.
- The condition of your current key. A worn or chipped blade can stop turning the lock, and copying a worn blade copies the wear. We may cut from the lock or code instead.
- How many keys you want made, and where the car is when we reach it.
Common problems and the part we cannot guess
The problems we expect on this year line up with the data: worn ignition wafers on high-mileage cars, a laser-cut blade that is worn or chipped until it no longer turns, and cheap non-transponder copies that fit the lock but will not start the engine. If your key sticks or needs jiggling, bring it up on the call. Making a fresh copy of a failing key often just reproduces the failure.
The one point we will not guess at is the all-keys-lost path on early-build cars. The data tells us an immobilizer ECU reset may be needed instead of a quick OBD add, and that it is confirmed by year and VIN. So we check your VIN first and tell you what your car needs before we start.
Why call us: we have been in business since 1987, we run a storefront plus mobile vans, and the person who answers is part of the same company that does the work, with no dispatch middlemen. David oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start. Frequently asked questions
Does a 2001 Lexus IS need a chipped key to start?
Yes. It uses a 4C transponder chip, and the car's immobilizer must recognize it. A plain metal copy from a hardware store may turn the lock but will not start the engine.
Can you copy my 2001 IS key if I only have one?
Yes. For this year an original key is needed to duplicate, and you have one. We cut the laser-cut TOY48 blade and program the new chip through the OBD port.
What if I lost all my keys?
All keys lost is possible for this car. On the earliest cars it can require an immobilizer ECU reset rather than a quick OBD add, so we confirm by year and VIN before starting.
Is my 2001 IS push-to-start?
No. It uses a standard key with a transponder chip. There is no smart key or push-button start on this year.
My key barely turns the ignition. Do I need a new key or a new lock?
It could be either. A worn or chipped laser-cut blade can stop turning, and high-mileage cars can have worn ignition wafers. We look at both before cutting anything.
Do I have to bring the car to your shop?
No. Our mobile vans come to you, or you can visit the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour and we will help you choose. You can also contact us online.
