2010 Kia Soul key replacement in Los Angeles

A 2010 Kia Soul uses a mechanical turn-key, not push-to-start. If the car has an immobilizer, the key carries a Philips ID46 chip we program through the OBD port; if not, it is a plain cut. We test before cutting. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour.

The 2010–2013 Soul uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Kia Soul key guide.

Many US turn-key Souls of this era lack an immobilizer and were major targets of the 2021-2023 theft wave; published lists conflict on the exact Soul years (HLDI reporting covers 2011-2021 turn-key Kias broadly, while settlement class-list summaries (ConsumerAffairs; CarPro) list the Soul only for 2020-2022). We test the car before cutting; when a chip is present it is Philips ID46, OBD-programmed.

What kind of key does a 2010 Kia Soul use?

The 2010 Soul is a turn-key car. There is no push-button start and no proximity fob to deal with. You put a metal key in the ignition and turn it, and that key also works as your mechanical backup for the door.

Here is the part that matters to you as an owner: whether the key holds a chip depends on the car. Where the Soul is immobilizer-equipped, including smart-key trims, the chip is a Philips ID46 (Hitag 2 family). That chip has to be programmed to the car before it will start the engine. Where the car has no immobilizer, the key is simply cut and it works. We do not guess which one you have. We test the car first, then decide what to cut and whether anything needs programming.

When a chip is present, programming is done through the OBD port under the dash. It does not require NASTF secure-data credentials, so it is a straightforward job for a mobile van at your car.

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

Good news on both counts for this setup. You do not need an original key to make a copy, and an all-keys-lost situation is possible to solve. If you have one working key, we can duplicate it. If you have none, we can still make a new one from the car itself.

Losing every key is usually less dramatic on a car without an immobilizer, because there is no transponder to program: the work is cutting a key that fits the lock. On a chipped car, we cut the key and then program the ID46 chip through OBD. Either way, we come to you with a van, or you can bring the car or the lock details to the storefront.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and whether you have any key left.
  2. We confirm the car by VIN or in person and test whether it has an immobilizer chip.
  3. We cut the key to the ignition and door lock.
  4. If a chip is present, we program the ID46 through the OBD port.
  5. You test start, door, and trunk operation before we finish.

What affects the price of a 2010 Soul key?

We do not publish numbers here, because the honest answer depends on what we find when we look at the car. These are the things that move the cost:

  • Chip or no chip: a plain cut key is the lighter-cost job; a chipped key adds the chip and the OBD programming step.
  • Duplicate versus all keys lost: copying from a working key is usually the more economical route than building a key from scratch.
  • Ignition condition: a worn lock where the key sticks or will not turn may need work on the lock before any key is worth cutting.
  • Theft damage: a damaged steering column or ignition lock is a repair job on top of key replacement, and a recovered stolen car usually needs a new ignition lock.
  • Where and when: a van visit to your location and an after-hours call are different from a drop-off at the Westwood storefront.

What we cannot confirm from published lists

Many US turn-key Souls of this era lack an immobilizer, and turn-key Kias became major targets in the 2021-2023 theft wave. But the published sources conflict on exactly which Soul years are affected. One body of insurance-loss reporting covers 2011-2021 turn-key Kias broadly, while settlement class-list summaries list the Soul only for 2020-2022. A 2010 falls outside both, so nobody can tell you from a list whether your particular car has a chip.

So we confirm by VIN and by testing the car in person before cutting anything. That is more reliable than any chart, and it protects you from paying for programming you do not need, or from a key that turns but will not start the car.

There is one honest limit worth stating: the ID46 chip family is verified for immobilizer-equipped cars, but we will not tell you your car is one or the other until we have checked it.

Common 2010 Soul key and ignition problems

The problems we see on this setup are fairly consistent. Worn ignition lock wafers make the key stick or refuse to turn, and a worn key makes that worse, so a fresh copy from a tired key is not always the fix. Steering-column and ignition damage from theft attempts is the other big one, since these turn-key cars were prime targets. And simple lost keys are common, which are quick to resolve when there is no transponder to program.

If your car was stolen and recovered, tell us on the phone. It changes what we bring in the van.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans covering 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You are talking to one company, not a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. Phones are answered around the clock at (213) 577-1366.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work. That is a fair question for us too.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2010 Kia Soul have a transponder chip?

It depends on the car. Immobilizer-equipped cars, including smart-key trims, use a Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip. Many turn-key Souls of this era have no immobilizer. We confirm by VIN and by testing the car before cutting.

Can you make a key if I lost all of them?

Yes. All keys lost is possible for this setup, and you do not need an original key. We cut a key to the lock, and if the car has a chip we program it through the OBD port.

Is the 2010 Soul push-to-start?

No. It is a mechanical turn-key car, and the key doubles as your mechanical backup for the door.

How is a chipped key programmed?

Through the OBD port. It does not require NASTF secure-data access, so we can do it at your car with a mobile van.

My Soul was stolen and recovered. What do I need?

Most likely a new ignition lock, because theft attempts damage the steering column and ignition. Tell us when you call so we can bring the right parts and key.

My key sticks in the ignition. Is it the key or the car?

Often worn ignition lock wafers, sometimes combined with a worn key. We check both before cutting a new key, since a copy of a worn key can inherit the problem.

Do you come to me or do I bring the car?

Either. Our mobile vans come to you across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, or you can visit the storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 to arrange it.

We cover all these cities
