The 2017–2024 Ridgeline uses the same key setup, so everything on this page applies to those years too. The full picture is on the Honda Ridgeline key guide.

Second generation: KBB's 2017 spec table shows push-button start standard on every trim, with proximity door entry not available on the base RT (the fob still starts the truck). KR5V2X-family fob on ID47.
What kind of key does the 2017 Ridgeline use?
The 2017 Ridgeline is the second-generation truck, and every trim has push-button start as standard. Your key is a smart-proximity fob, in the KR5V2X family, built around a G-family transponder chip (ID47, Hitag 3). That chip detail is verified against two published sources, not guessed.
One trim detail is worth knowing. According to KBB's 2017 spec table, proximity door entry is not available on the base RT. On that trim you still start the truck with the fob, but you may be using a button to unlock rather than just touching the handle. Other trims have the walk-up entry. Either way, the fob is the same kind of part: a radio-and-chip device that has to be programmed to your specific truck, not just cut.
Inside the fob is a mechanical backup blade. It is easy to forget about until the day you need it, and it is the reason a dead fob battery does not have to leave you stranded.
Dead battery, crushed fob, or truly lost key?
These are three different problems, and they do not cost the same to fix. Sorting out which one you have is the first thing we do on the phone.
- Dead fob battery: the dash reports 'key not detected,' but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. This is the most common complaint on this truck, and it often needs a battery, not a new key.
- Water-damaged or crushed fobs: a fob that went through the wash or got run over in a driveway may have a damaged board. If it will not respond even with a fresh battery, replacement is usually the answer.
- Lost fob: a replacement smart key costs more than the bladed keys on older trucks, because you are buying a radio transmitter, a chip, and programming labor.
Spare key or all keys lost: how it works on this truck
Duplicating a Ridgeline fob normally needs an original key present. If you have one working fob, making a spare is the more straightforward route, since the truck can see the existing key while we add a new one.
If every key is gone, that is still possible on this truck. All-keys-lost is supported for this setup, and programming is done through the OBD port, the diagnostic connector under the dash. The data we have shows no NASTF SDRM credential requirement for this year, so there is no special secure-database hurdle that pushes the job to the dealer.
Here is how an all-keys-lost job typically goes:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and trim, and whether you have any fob at all.
- We confirm the truck by VIN and ownership, and we ask for ID and registration before we make a key.
- A technician comes to you with a mobile van, or you bring the truck to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd if it can be moved.
- We prepare the new fob, connect to the OBD port, and program it to the truck.
- We test starting, the door functions, and the emergency blade before we call it done.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What affects the price of a 2017 Ridgeline key?
We do not quote numbers in an article because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the factors that move it:
- Whether you need a spare or an all-keys-lost replacement. Having an original key makes the job simpler.
- Whether the fob itself needs replacing, or only a battery or a case repair.
- How many fobs you want programmed in one visit.
- Where the work happens. Coming to our storefront is usually the more economical route compared with a mobile call-out, though a truck that will not move may need the van.
- The time of day. We answer the phone 24 hours a day, but after-hours work is its own category.
- Whether the fob you were sold matches your truck. Cheap online fobs sometimes carry the wrong chip or a locked board and cannot be programmed.
What we confirm by VIN, and why call us
The core facts above are verified: smart key, ID47 Hitag 3 chip, OBD programming, spare needs an original, and all-keys-lost is possible. What we do not claim from a data sheet is the exact fob part number and button layout for your truck. Those can vary by trim, so we confirm by VIN and by looking at your fob in person before we order or cut anything.
Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987. We run a real storefront plus mobile vans, and you talk to one company, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start.
If you are still sorting out options, see our Honda key replacement overview or the wider car key service page. Other model years differ, so check the main Ridgeline key page if you are not sure of your year. When you are ready, contact us or call (213) 577-1366.
Frequently asked questions
My 2017 Ridgeline says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. A weak fob battery is the most common cause. The hidden emergency blade inside the fob will still open the door. Try a fresh battery first, and call us if the message continues, since the fob may be damaged.
Can you make a key if I lost every fob?
Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible for this truck, and programming is done through the OBD port. We verify the VIN and your ownership first.
Do I need my original fob to get a spare?
For duplication on this setup, an original key is needed. If you have one working fob, bring it. If not, we do an all-keys-lost job instead.
Does the 2017 Ridgeline use a transponder chip?
Yes. The fob uses a G-family chip (ID47, Hitag 3), confirmed from published sources. The chip and the fob must be programmed to your truck before it will start.
Does my base RT have walk-up door entry?
KBB's spec table shows proximity door entry is not available on the base RT. The fob still starts the truck there with push-button start. We confirm trim details by VIN.
Will a fob from an online seller work?
Sometimes, but not always. Some are the wrong chip or are locked and cannot be programmed. We would rather check the fob against your VIN before you buy, or supply the correct one ourselves.
Can you come to me, or do I have to bring the truck in?
Both work. Our mobile vans come to you, and our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and we will sort out which makes sense.
