2011 Ford Edge key replacement

The 2011 Ford Edge uses a remote-head key with a 4D63 80-bit transponder chip, programmed through the OBD port with no special manufacturer-access subscription required. We can copy it from an existing key or make new keys if every key is lost. Call (213) 577-1366 and we'll confirm your exact setup by VIN.

What key does a 2011 Ford Edge use?

Most 2011 Edges use a remote-head key: a metal blade, a transponder chip inside the plastic head, and the lock, unlock and panic buttons built into the same piece. The chip is a 4D63, an 80-bit type. We verified that against two supplier references, and 80-bit remote-head keys are listed for 2011 through 2015 Edge fitment. This key is not push-to-start. You turn it in the ignition.

The remote-head key also has a mechanical backup function. The blade still works in the door lock if the remote battery dies, and the key can still turn the ignition cylinder. But the engine will only run if the car reads the correct chip in the key. A blade that is cut correctly but has no programmed chip will turn the ignition and the engine still won't start.

These are the problems we see most often on this vehicle:

  • Cracked key shells and worn-out buttons, where the remote part fails but the chip inside may be fine
  • Dead key or remote batteries
  • The PATS theft light flashing, with an engine that cranks but won't start because the car isn't reading the chip
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage Edges, which can make a good key feel sticky or refuse to turn

Spare key or all keys lost: how does it work on this Edge?

For this setup, copying a key requires an original working key. If you still have one, we cut a new blade and program the new key to the vehicle. That is the simpler situation. If a key has a cracked shell but still works, we can often move the chip and remote into a new shell, so you don't have to start over with a new key.

If you've lost every key, replacement is still possible. It takes more work, because there is no original to copy from. The programming is done over the OBD port, and the 2011 Edge does not require access to the manufacturer's security registry. That is why we can usually handle it ourselves without sending the car to a dealer.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model, and whether you have one working key, a damaged key, or none.
  2. We confirm the key type by VIN, since trim and options can change what the car came with.
  3. We cut the mechanical blade to your lock. With no key, we make the cut from the lock itself.
  4. We program the new key's chip through the OBD port and test it by starting the engine.
  5. We check that the remote buttons work, and we test the door lock with the blade.

What affects the price of a 2011 Edge key?

We don't quote numbers on a web page because the actual job decides the cost. These are the factors that matter on this Edge:

  • Whether you have a working key to copy or all keys are lost, since the second takes more labor
  • Whether you need a full remote-head key or just a new shell or battery, which is usually the more economical route
  • How many keys you want programmed in one visit
  • Whether the job is at our storefront or at your vehicle, since a mobile van visit involves travel
  • Whether the ignition or door lock is worn enough that the lock itself needs attention along with the key

What we confirm by VIN rather than assume

Our verified data covers the standard remote-head key with the 4D63 chip. Our notes also say some upper trims may have been offered with an Intelligent Access smart fob and push-button start. We have not verified that for this model year, so we won't tell you it is or isn't on your car from a web page.

If your Edge has a push-button start and no key blade in the ignition, tell us when you call. We'll check the VIN and look at the car in person before we say what it needs. If the setup turns out to be something we can't do on site, we'll tell you plainly rather than start a job we can't finish.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for an Edge key

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who passes the job along. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith you hire for it. For more on this vehicle, see our Ford Edge key pages, the wider Ford key replacement overview, or the contact page if you'd rather write first.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2011 Ford Edge have a push-to-start key?

The verified key type for this year is a remote-head key that you turn in the ignition. Some upper trims may have had an optional smart fob with push-button start, but we haven't verified that for 2011. We confirm by VIN.

What chip does the 2011 Edge key use?

A 4D63 80-bit transponder chip, confirmed against two supplier references. The chip has to be programmed to the car, or the engine won't run even if the blade turns the ignition.

Can you make a 2011 Edge key if I lost all my keys?

Yes. All-keys-lost replacement is possible on this setup. The key is programmed through the OBD port, and no special manufacturer registry access is needed. It takes more work than copying from an existing key.

Do I need my original key to get a copy?

For a straight duplicate, yes, an original working key is needed. Without one, it becomes an all-keys-lost job, which we can still do.

Why does my Edge crank but not start, with a flashing light on the dash?

That pattern points to the PATS anti-theft system not reading the chip in your key. Common causes are a damaged key, a failed chip, or a key that was never programmed. We'd need to check the key and the car to say which one it is.

My key buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not always. A dead battery or a cracked shell with worn buttons can often be fixed without replacing the whole key. If the chip inside is still good, it can sometimes go into a new shell.

Will the mechanical blade still open my door if the remote dies?

Yes. This key has a mechanical backup, so the blade works in the door lock and ignition cylinder even when the remote battery is dead.

We cover all these cities
