What do Honda owners in Altadena usually need?
Most Honda key calls fall into a few groups: a key that will not turn, a key that went missing, a smart fob that stopped working, or a spare that was never made. Altadena adds two local wrinkles.
The first is the trailhead. The Eaton Canyon Nature Area and the Cobb Estate / Sam Merrill Trailhead are places where people leave a car and walk off for hours, and a door that shuts with the keys inside is an easy mistake when your mind is on the hike. If you only need the door opened, our Altadena car lockout page covers that separate job.
The second is rebuilding. The January 2025 Eaton Fire destroyed thousands of structures, West Altadena especially, and the area is now a mix of surviving older homes and active rebuilding. People in that position are already carrying plenty. A Honda with no working key, or only one key left, is something we can usually sort out right where the car sits.
These are the Honda key problems that come up most often:
- Worn ignition lock wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning
- Pre-immobilizer Civics and CR-Vs (through 2000-2001) that any hardware-store copy will start
- Cracked remote-head key shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models
- Dead smart-fob batteries, where the dash says key not detected but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder: the doors open, but the engine will not start
- Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently
- A flashing green key (immobilizer) light caused by an antenna-ring or chip fault
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
The process is the same whether your Honda is in a driveway, on a street, or parked by a trailhead. Our vans carry the cutting and programming equipment, so the work happens beside your car.
- Call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers at any hour. Tell us the model, the year, whether you have any working key, and whether yours is a blade key, a remote-head key, or a push-button smart key.
- We check coverage for your exact year before we head out, and we give you the quote before work begins. For the newest model years, we tell you straight if the job may be dealer-only.
- A van comes to your car wherever it is parked in Altadena. We ask for proof the car is yours, such as registration and matching ID.
- If you are locked out, we get the door open first.
- We cut the key blade, by code or from the lock, and program the chip or fob through the car's OBD-II port.
- We test everything before you sign off: starting the engine, locking and unlocking, the remote buttons, and any spare key.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Honda did not move to chip keys all at once. It happened model by model, so the right key depends on your car and year, not just the badge. Here is the plain version.
Exact changeover years vary by model, so we verify against your specific year, and by VIN or in person where needed, rather than guessing from the generation. That matters because some reference catalogs, especially European-market ones, list different chips (Megamos Crypto 48) for several late-1990s and early-2000s models. US cars follow the eras below.
- Plain mechanical keys: several Hondas kept metal-only keys into the early 2000s (Civic through 2000, CR-V through 2001). With no chip, any hardware-store copy starts the car, which is a main reason those years still top theft lists.
- First chip era, fixed-code Megamos 13: Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004, Pilot 2003-2004.
- Philips ID46 / Hitag 2 chip: Accord 2003; CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot 2005; Ridgeline and Civic 2006; Fit 2009.
- Honda G chip (ID47 / Hitag 3): starting with the 2013 Accord and spreading through the 2014-2017 redesigns.
- Smart proximity keys: standard at each model's following redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES 4A fobs (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), while the Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.
What if I have lost every Honda key?
Losing every key is usually less dramatic with a Honda than with many other brands. Hondas are among the most locksmith-friendly cars: every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment, most models need no PIN code from the manufacturer, and Honda does not generally require NASTF SDRM credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work.
There are honest exceptions, and you should know them before anyone quotes you:
If your car falls in the dealer-only group, we will say so on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish the job. For the broader picture, see our page on lost car key replacement in Altadena.
- Earliest Megamos-13 cars, roughly 1998-2004: some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU. Those take more involved work.
- Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory-linked keys on Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims have to be matched to the correct memory slot, so we program each key with that in mind.
- Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023): aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools cover most of these vehicles, but the newest model years can be dealer-only until tool support catches up. We confirm coverage before quoting.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Honda key in Altadena?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the price:
- The type of key: a plain metal key, a transponder key, a remote-head key, or a smart proximity fob
- The model year and platform, since the newest vehicles need more specialized tools
- Whether you have a working key to copy or are starting from all keys lost
- Extra work on early Megamos-13 cars that need extended procedures or bench work
- Memory-linked keys that must be matched to the right driver slot, and how many keys you want
- Location: Altadena is roughly 26 miles from our Westwood storefront, and any mobile job reflects travel. We tell you how it figures in when we quote.
Should I use the Honda dealer or a locksmith?
Both are legitimate choices, and sometimes the dealer is the right one. A dealer can handle any Honda, including the newest model years where aftermarket tools may not yet cover all-keys-lost. If your car is in that category, we will tell you rather than pretend otherwise. The tradeoff is that the car has to get to the dealer, and service departments generally keep set hours.
A mobile locksmith works the other way around. We come to the car, which matters when the only key is gone and the car is stuck at a trailhead or in front of a rebuild site. For most Hondas, programming is done through the OBD-II port without a manufacturer PIN code, so the whole job can be finished in one visit. Making a spare while you still hold a working key is usually the more economical route, whichever way you go. Our Altadena car key replacement page covers other makes, and the Honda key guide goes deeper on the models.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who sells your job to whoever is free. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. If your Honda is one of the awkward cases, such as an early Megamos-13 all-keys-lost or a brand-new 4A platform car, that oversight is where the extra care goes.
Honda key service across Altadena
Altadena is unincorporated Los Angeles County, ZIP code 91001, and we serve all of it. Near the Christmas Tree Lane district along Santa Rosa Avenue and in Janes Village, surviving older homes sit alongside new construction. In West Altadena, where the Eaton Fire hit hardest, and in East Altadena, the same mix of intact blocks and rebuilding applies. We work at the curb in front of whichever situation you are in.
Further out, the Rubio Canyon and Millard Canyon areas, the Farnsworth Park area, The Meadows and the Country Club area are all part of our service area. La Viña is a gated hillside community at the northwest edge. If your Honda problem comes with a gate problem, we also do gate lock service there, so mention it when you call.
The climate is worth a thought too. Altadena's foothill summers run hotter than the basin, and the dry Santa Ana winds carry grit. Wind-blown grit and intense sun are the main wear factors on exterior doors and locks, and the same grit can find its way into a worn key or ignition. If a fob starts acting up, the Altadena key fob replacement page explains what is usually involved, and the main Altadena page lists our other services.

Call (213) 577-1366How to check any locksmith before you hire
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, issued through the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services. Ask any locksmith for it, including us, before the work starts. Also ask for the quote up front and for the make, model and year to be confirmed on the phone. Anyone who will not say how they would handle your specific car is worth skipping. Questions are welcome on our contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new Honda key if I have lost all of them?
On most Hondas, yes. Every immobilizer era programs through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. The exceptions are the newest model years on the Hitag AES 4A platform, which can be dealer-only, and some early Megamos-13 cars that need extended procedures. We confirm which applies to your car before quoting.
Does my Honda need a chip in the key?
It depends on the year. Several Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s (Civic through 2000, CR-V through 2001). Later cars use chips, and newer ones use smart proximity keys. Tell us the model and year and we will confirm.
Why does my copied key open the door but not start the car?
Most likely it was cut without a transponder chip, or the chip was never programmed to the car. The blade turns the door lock, but the immobilizer will not release the engine. We can add a properly programmed key.
My dash says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?
Often it is just a dead battery. The hidden emergency blade in the fob should still open the door. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob or the car's antenna may be at fault, and we can diagnose it. See our key fob page for Altadena.
Do you need a PIN code from Honda?
No, not on most models. Honda programming generally goes through the OBD-II port with professional equipment and no manufacturer PIN. Driver 1 / Driver 2 memory keys need to be matched to the right slot.
Can you help if I am locked out at a trailhead near Eaton Canyon or the Cobb Estate?
Yes. We come to the car. If the keys are inside, we open the door. If the keys are lost, we can make a new one on site, depending on your model and year.
Do you work in the gated La Viña community?
Yes, we serve La Viña, and we also do gate lock service there. Tell us when you call how we will get in, so the van is not stuck at the gate.
What do I need to show you before you make a key?
Proof that the car is yours, such as registration and matching ID. It is a basic safeguard, and any reputable locksmith should ask.
How do I know if my Honda is dealer-only?
It depends on the model and year, and the newest ones are the ones most likely to be affected. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN or model year. We tell you plainly if the dealer is the only route.
