What do Nissan owners in Agua Dulce usually need?

Most Nissan key calls from Agua Dulce fall into a few situations: every key is lost, there was never a spare, the smart fob stopped working, the key opens the doors but will not start the engine, or the keys are locked inside the car. The setting matters as much as the key. Agua Dulce is almost entirely rural ranchettes and custom single-family homes on multi-acre parcels, much of it built from the 1970s onward, with driveway gates, barns and outbuildings as standard features. There is effectively no apartment or condo stock, so nobody is calling us from a parking garage.

Out here a Nissan is usually parked inside the driveway gate, beside the barn, near an outbuilding, or at the far end of a long drive. A key can go missing anywhere on a property that size, and a locked car can sit a long way from the front door. That is why we work mobile: the job happens where the car is, not where a tow truck would have to haul it.

Lockouts at rural custom homes near Vasquez Rocks are part of the picture too. If the keys are inside and you have a working spare, car lockout service in Agua Dulce may be all you need. If the key is gone for good, that is a replacement job, and the rest of this page explains how it works.

How does mobile Nissan key service work at the curb?

Out here the curb might be a gravel pull-through, a ranch gate or a roadside shoulder. The process is the same wherever the car sits.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour. Tell us the model, year, trim, how the car starts (key in an ignition, push button, or twist knob), and what you have left: a working key, a dead fob, or nothing.
  2. We work out the likely key type on the phone and tell you honestly if the car looks like a dealer-only case, before a van makes the drive.
  3. We confirm you are the owner or authorized to have the car opened and keyed. Expect to show ID and proof the car is yours.
  4. We confirm the car by VIN and, if a fob is involved, the correct FCC ID and IC numbers, because the wrong fob will not pair.
  5. We cut a blade where the key has one, then program the key through the OBD-II port using professional tools.
  6. We test everything: doors, start, and any remote functions. You get the total explained before we begin, not after.

Which Nissan key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Nissan did not move to electronic keys all at once, and model and year matter more than the badge. Where catalogs disagree, we say so, and we confirm by VIN and in person instead of guessing.

  • Late 1990s to mid-2000s: Nissan's NATS immobilizer spread across the line, mostly with the Texas 4D60 fixed-crypto chip. That covers the Altima 1999-2004, Sentra 2000-2006, Pathfinder through 2004 and Frontier 2002-2004. The 1999-2003 Maxima is a genuine split, with catalogs listing both 4D60 and the Philips ID41.
  • Mid-2000s onward: the Philips ID46/Hitag-2 era. Murano from 2003, Maxima and Titan 2004, Pathfinder and Frontier 2005, Altima 2005-2006, Sentra and Versa 2007.
  • Intelligent Key adoption varies wildly by model. The 2007 Altima made push-button start standard on every trim, while the 2007-2008 Maxima used a twist-knob column switch. The 2008-2013 Rogue offered a twist-knob Intelligent Key above a bladed base key. The Frontier kept a plain bladed ID46 key all the way through 2021.
  • A brief ID47/Hitag-3 window covers the 2013-2015 Altima and, per conflicting catalogs, the early R52 Pathfinder.
  • Then the 4A/Hitag-AES platform: first on the 2014 Rogue's smart fob (though catalogs list a bladed flip key for the base Rogue S through 2020), then the 2015-2016 Murano, Titan, Maxima and Altima, and standard on the KR5TXN-series fobs used across 2019+ models.

What if I have lost every Nissan key?

All-keys-lost is the job people dread, but on many Nissans it is routine for the right tools. Nissan key security is BCM-based. Older NATS cars (4D60/ID41 and most ID46 years) use a 4-digit PIN derived from the body control module, and professional locksmith tools program keys, all-keys-lost included, through the OBD-II port.

Newer models moved to a rolling scheme. A 22-digit PrePIN from the BCM converts to a 20-digit PIN, as documented by Abrites and other pro-tool vendors, and the tool's own calculator or an online service usually handles it. On recent keyless models with locked RH850-type BCM/HFM modules, all-keys-lost can require a bench read of the module (the Abrites NN010 is one example) or an online calculation, rather than a quick OBD session. That takes more time and equipment, and we will say so up front.

Here is the honest limit. Nissan has not fitted an FCA-style secure gateway on most of these models, and NASTF SDRM credentials are generally not a hard requirement through the 2010s. But aftermarket coverage for the newest generations, meaning 2022+ trucks and SUVs and the 2025+ Murano, is still maturing. Some of those jobs may be dealer- or specialist-only until tool support settles. If your VIN points that way, we will tell you plainly. What affects the cost of a Nissan key replacement?

We do not put numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car and the situation. These are the things that move the total:

  • Key type: a bladed transponder key, a flip key and an Intelligent Key push-button fob are different parts with different programming.
  • Whether you still have a working key: copying from one working key is usually the more economical route compared with starting from all keys lost.
  • Security generation: 4-digit PIN cars are typically more routine, while rolling PrePIN systems and locked modules may need a calculation service or a bench read.
  • The fob itself: fobs bought online with the wrong FCC or IC numbers are a common cause of failed pairings, so a mismatched fob can mean buying a second one.
  • Mechanical condition: worn ignition wafers and a worn blade on a high-mileage car may need attention in addition to the new key.
  • Time and distance: an after-hours call and a drive from our Westwood base, about 46 miles to Agua Dulce, are real factors.

Dealer or locksmith: which is the fairer choice?

A Nissan dealer is a legitimate option and sometimes the right one. For the newest generations, 2022+ trucks and SUVs and the 2025+ Murano, aftermarket tool support is still maturing, and certain jobs may be dealer- or specialist-only. If your car is in that group, we will say so instead of sending a van that cannot finish the work.

For most other Nissans the real difference is logistics. A dealer works from a fixed location, so an all-keys-lost car means arranging a tow off your property. We come to the car, at any hour, and aim to finish the job in your driveway.

Ask both for a total and for what each one includes: the key, the programming and the trip. For general background, see our car keys overview and the Nissan key page.

What do common Nissan key problems actually mean?

Not every complaint needs a new key. Sorting it out on the phone can save you a visit or point us to the right tool.

  • Flashing key light and no start on a 2007-2014 push-button Altima, Maxima or Murano: an electronic steering-column-lock (ESCL) failure can mimic a key problem, and a new key will not fix it.
  • NATS security light stays on solid: the immobilizer is not reading a worn or badly cloned chip.
  • Worn ignition wafers and key blades: common on high-mileage bladed-key cars and trucks.
  • 'Key not detected' on a smart fob: often a dead battery. Holding the fob against the start button or knob usually still works.
  • A hardware-store copy opens the doors but will not start the engine: it was cut without a transponder.
  • A used or aftermarket fob refuses to pair: its FCC ID or IC numbers do not match the original.

We are one company, with no dispatch middlemen. The business that answers your call is the business that sends the van, and David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

Nissan key service across Agua Dulce and ZIP 91390

We cover all of Agua Dulce, ZIP 91390, an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County: the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center, the Sierra Highway corridor, the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, the area near Vasquez Rocks, and the Mint Canyon area on the southwest side toward Canyon Country. Landmarks make directions easy: Vasquez Rocks Natural Area Park, Agua Dulce Airpark, Agua Dulce Winery, the Pacific Crest Trail crossing, or the junction of Agua Dulce Canyon Road and Sierra Highway.

This is a high-desert transition climate at about 2,500 feet, with hot, dry summers, cold winter nights and frequent wind. Temperature swings shift door frames seasonally, and dust works into exterior gate locks and padlocks. None of that changes how a Nissan transponder works, but it changes what we ask when you call: is the car inside a gate, does the gate lock work, and how do we reach the car?

If the gate or an outbuilding lock is the real problem, we also do driveway gate and entry lock service on ranchette properties off Agua Dulce Canyon Road, hangar and outbuilding lock work at Agua Dulce Airpark, and rekeying for new owners of horse properties along Sierra Highway. See locksmith services in Agua Dulce for the full list. Not sure which service you need? Contact us or call (213) 577-1366 and we will sort it out with you.

Nissan models in our key guide

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a new Nissan key if I have lost all of them?

In most cases, yes. Older NATS cars use a 4-digit PIN that professional tools handle through the OBD-II port. Some recent keyless models with locked modules need a bench read or online calculation, and the newest 2022+ models may be dealer- or specialist-only. We confirm by VIN.

Do you come to Agua Dulce at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood base, so we give you an honest arrival estimate on the call rather than a promise we cannot keep.

Why will my hardware-store copy open the doors but not start my Nissan?

It was almost certainly cut without a transponder chip. The immobilizer needs to read a programmed chip before the engine will run. A plain copy only turns the lock. A properly programmed key solves it.

My Nissan says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery is a common cause. Holding the fob against the start button or twist knob usually still works. If that fails, the fob or the car's reader may be the problem, and we can diagnose which.

Can I buy a fob online and have you program it?

Sometimes, but be careful. Fobs bought online with the wrong FCC or IC numbers are a common cause of failed pairings. Give us your VIN and the numbers on the fob first, and we will tell you whether it will work.

My Altima has a flashing key light and will not start. Is it the key?

Maybe not. On 2007-2014 push-button Altimas, Maximas and Murano models, an electronic steering-column-lock failure can look exactly like a key problem. We help sort out which one you have before you pay for a key you may not need.

How much will a Nissan key cost?

It depends on the key type, whether you have a working key, the car's security generation, the fob, and the time and distance involved. We explain the total before work starts, and we do not quote numbers without knowing your car.

Do I have to go to the Nissan dealer for a newer model?

Usually not, but for 2022+ trucks and SUVs and the 2025+ Murano, aftermarket support is still maturing and some jobs may be dealer- or specialist-only. We will tell you honestly if yours looks like one of those.

Is Wilshire Lock & Key a licensed locksmith?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for that number before work begins, including us. Our own license number is being added to the site, so please ask when you call.
