What do Kia owners in Agua Dulce usually need?
Agua Dulce is not a place where cars live in garages beside an apartment door. Most homes here are ranchettes and custom houses on multi-acre parcels, much of it built from the 1970s onward, with horse facilities, driveway gates, barns and outbuildings as standard features. A Kia gets parked wherever the day ended: by the barn, at the gate, beside an outbuilding, or at the far end of a long drive. There is effectively no apartment or condo stock in town, so the parking-lot lockout that is common elsewhere in Los Angeles County mostly doesn't apply here.
What does happen: a key goes missing somewhere on the property, a spare was never cut, a flip-key hinge snaps after years in a pocket, a smart fob battery dies and the dash says key not detected, or the keys end up locked inside the car. Lockouts at rural custom homes near Vasquez Rocks are a real scenario, and so are the long driveways off Agua Dulce Canyon Road where nobody is close enough to lend a hand.
Distance is the other factor. Agua Dulce sits about 46 miles from our Westwood base, so a stranded owner can't just walk to a shop, and a Kia that won't start is not an easy car to bring to one. That is why we come to the car. If the only problem is a locked door, our Agua Dulce car lockout service covers it.
How does mobile Kia key service work at the curb?
Every job starts with a call to (213) 577-1366, which is answered around the clock. Here is what happens after that.
- You tell us the model, the year if you know it, whether the Kia has a turn-key ignition or a push-button start, and how many working keys you have left, including none.
- We ask where the car is. On a multi-acre property that means which driveway, whether there is a gate and how it opens, and whether the car can be moved. A general spot such as near Vasquez Rocks or off Sierra Highway is enough to start.
- A technician drives out in a mobile van set up for key cutting and OBD-II programming.
- On arrival we confirm the car is yours, look at the ignition type and, when it matters, the VIN. Ownership checks are normal for any car key work.
- We make the key to fit your locks, then program it through the OBD-II port if the car has an immobilizer. A turn-key Kia with no immobilizer needs only the cut key.
- Before we leave we test every key you are keeping: door, start, and remote buttons if the key has them.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Kia do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Kia key work depends more on the era of the car than on the model name, so it helps to sort Kias into a few groups. This is the summary we work from, and the exact changeover points are checked by year and VIN.
- Early 2000s: plain mechanical keys, or early chip keys where an immobilizer was fitted. That means Texas 4D-60 on some 2001-2006 models, then Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) from the mid-2000s through the mid-2010s.
- Most 2011-2021 turn-key cars, and some 2022s: no immobilizer at all. This is the defining Kia quirk, and it is documented in the Hyundai/Kia theft class action. Any correctly cut key starts these cars.
- Push-button trims: these always carried full immobilizers. The early 2010s used ID46 smart keys, and roughly 2016-2020 moved to Hitag 3 / ID47.
- 2019-and-newer platforms such as the Telluride, K5, Sorento MQ4, Sportage NQ5 and Forte BD: NXP Hitag-AES '4A' and Texas DST-AES ('H-8A'/ID75) systems.
- 2022 onward: Kia made immobilizers standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year, though at least one published 2023 spec sheet, for the Sportage LX, still lists the immobilizer as trim-dependent.
What does programming a Kia key involve?
If your Kia has no immobilizer, there is no transponder to program. A mechanically cut key starts the car, and only the keyless-entry remote, where the car has one, needs OBD programming. If your remote is the only part that has failed, see our page on key fob replacement in Agua Dulce.
Immobilizer-equipped Kias are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional tools. Many 2010s models need no PIN with current aftermarket equipment. Others require a Kia PIN, which comes from the VIN, a dealer/KDealer account, or NASTF-credentialed access. That PIN step is one reason two Kia jobs can look the same on the phone and go differently at the car.
The 2019-and-newer Hitag-AES (4A) and Texas DST-AES smart systems are supported by current pro tools for add-a-key and most all-keys-lost work. PIN and server requirements still vary by model year and tool, and the newest facelift years are confirmed job by job. If your car is one we need to check first, we will tell you that instead of guessing.
One more point: Kia's anti-theft software update, released after the theft wave, does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so it has no effect on how your keys are cut or programmed.
What about theft damage and worn ignitions?
Kias with turn-key ignitions from 2011-2022 were targets in the 'Kia Boys' theft wave. The usual damage is a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock. A stolen-recovered car typically needs a new ignition lock, and a new key alone won't fix it. We look at the lock first and tell you what the car actually needs.
Age causes the other common ignition problem. On high-mileage cars the lock wafers wear, and the key sticks or won't turn. A fresh key can sometimes help, but if the wafers are worn badly enough the ignition itself is the part to deal with. We would rather say so at the curb than cut you a key that still won't turn.
Other things we see in the same bracket: cracked fob shells, worn buttons, and low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips and fobs that work for a while and then fail intermittently. A fob that quits on the road is a poor place to save effort, which is why we program quality parts and test the result.

Call (213) 577-1366What if you've lost every Kia key?
All keys lost is easier on some Kias than others, and the difference comes back to the immobilizer. On a no-immobilizer turn-key car, we make a key that fits the locks and the car starts with it. There is nothing for the car to learn.
On an immobilizer car, we program a new key through the OBD-II port. Depending on the model, that may need a PIN from the VIN or an authorized source. On the 2019-and-newer smart systems, most all-keys-lost work is supported by current tools, but we confirm the specifics for your year before we promise anything. If a car turns out to need dealer-side access, and the newest facelift years are the likeliest place for that, we tell you straight rather than start a job we can't finish.
Before you assume every key is gone, check the places keys really end up on a rural property: the barn or feed room, a jacket on a fence post, the truck, the gate keypad area. If they are truly gone, our page on lost car key replacement in Agua Dulce explains what to have ready, including proof the car is yours.
What affects the cost of a Kia key replacement?
We don't put numbers on a web page, because the real cost depends on your car and your situation. These are the things that move it:
- Immobilizer or not. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia is usually the more economical job because no chip has to be programmed.
- Type of key: a plain cut key, a flip key, or a push-button smart fob. Smart fobs involve more hardware and more programming.
- Add-a-key versus all keys lost. Having a working key to copy from is simpler than starting from nothing.
- PIN access. Some models need a PIN from the VIN or an authorized source, which adds a step.
- Model year. The newest facelift years are confirmed per job and can take more checking.
- Ignition condition. Worn wafers or theft damage may mean the lock needs work as well as the key.
- Part quality. Cheap clones and aftermarket fobs can fail intermittently, and a better part costs more up front.
- Location and hour. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our base, and a night or holiday call is not the same as a weekday afternoon.
Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense?
A dealer is a fair choice in some cases. It works inside Kia's own systems, and for the newest facelift years that may be the only route. Its drawback is practical: the car normally has to be brought in, and a Kia that won't start means a tow or a long drive on top of the key itself. If a car is dealer-only, we'll say so on the phone.
For most Kias we are the more convenient route because the work happens where the car sits. A hardware-store copy is not the answer for every car. It starts a no-immobilizer Kia fine, but it will not start an immobilizer-equipped car without programming, and many owners find that out only after the trip. Our Kia key guide goes through the models, and the wider car key overview covers other makes.

Where in Agua Dulce do we work?
We serve all of Agua Dulce, ZIP 91390. That includes the town center along Agua Dulce Canyon Road, the Sierra Highway corridor, the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, the properties near Vasquez Rocks, and the Mint Canyon area on the southwest side toward Canyon Country. We also work around the Agua Dulce Canyon Road and Sierra Highway junction, near the Agua Dulce Winery, and at the Agua Dulce Airpark.
The setting matters for the work. Wind, dust and cold winter nights are normal in this high-desert climate at around 2,500 feet, and the temperature swings shift door frames seasonally. Dust works into gate locks and padlocks too. If you call about a Kia key and mention that a gate or barn lock is sticking, tell us. New owners of horse properties along Sierra Highway often want locks rekeyed at the same time, and that can be handled on one trip.

Frequently asked questions
Does my Kia need a programmed key or just a cut one?
It depends on the year and trim. Most 2011-2021 US Kias with turn-key ignitions, and some 2022s, have no immobilizer, so a correctly cut key starts them. Push-button Kias always have an immobilizer, and Kia made them standard across the lineup during the 2022 model year. We confirm by VIN and in person before telling you which applies.
Can you make a Kia key if I've lost every key?
Usually, yes. A no-immobilizer turn-key Kia needs a key that fits the locks. An immobilizer car needs a key programmed through the OBD-II port, sometimes with a PIN. Newer smart systems are mostly supported by current tools, but the newest facelift years are confirmed per job, and we'll tell you if a car is dealer-only.
Will a hardware-store copy work on my Kia?
On a no-immobilizer Kia it will start the car, because any correctly cut key does. On an immobilizer-equipped Kia it will turn in the lock but won't start the engine without transponder programming. Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips can also fail intermittently.
Does Kia's anti-theft software update change how keys are made?
No. The update released after the theft wave does not add an immobilizer. It changes alarm and ignition logic, so key cutting and programming are unaffected.
My Kia says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?
Often it is just a dead smart-fob battery. The hidden emergency blade in the fob should still open the door. If a new battery doesn't fix it, the fob may have failed, and we can look at it. Our key fob replacement page has more detail.
Can you come out to a ranch or a gated property in Agua Dulce?
Yes. We are mobile and go to the car, including driveways, gates and outbuilding areas. Tell us how the gate opens and where the Kia is parked when you call (213) 577-1366. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood base, which we factor into scheduling and cost.
My Kia was stolen and recovered. Is a new key enough?
Usually not. Turn-key Kias hit by the theft wave often have a broken steering-column shroud and a destroyed ignition lock, and a recovered car typically needs a new ignition lock. We check the damage first and tell you what the car needs.
What should I check before hiring any locksmith?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work starts, and ask for a business address you can verify. Be cautious of anyone who won't explain what affects the cost.
