What do Honda owners in Agua Dulce usually need?
Agua Dulce is ranchette country. Homes sit on multi-acre parcels, much of it built from the 1970s onward, with driveway gates, barns and outbuildings, and effectively no apartment or condo stock. That changes where Honda key trouble happens. Nobody is stuck in a parking structure here. The Civic is at the end of a long driveway beside a closed gate, the CR-V is parked near Vasquez Rocks or a trail crossing, or the Pilot is out by the barn and the only fob is somewhere in the hay.
Distance matters too. Agua Dulce is about 46 miles from our Westwood storefront, so a tow to a dealer or a ride to town is a real errand. A van that comes to the car usually makes more sense, and it is the reason we ask a handful of questions on the phone before we roll.
- You lost your only key, or every key, and the car will not start.
- You have one working key and want a spare made before the last one disappears.
- The key sticks, needs jiggling, or has stopped turning in the ignition.
- The remote-head shell has cracked, the keyring hole has snapped, or the buttons have worn out.
- A smart fob shows 'key not detected' on the dash.
- Your keys are locked inside the car. That one is its own job, covered on our car lockout service in Agua Dulce page.
How does mobile Honda key service work at the curb?
The process is the same whether you are in the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center or at the far end of a dirt drive. Here is how a typical job goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the model, year and trim, whether you have any working key, and exactly where the car is parked. If you can read the VIN off the dash or door jamb, even better.
- We work out what your Honda uses: a plain mechanical key, a chip key, or a smart proximity key. We also confirm that aftermarket coverage exists for that year before we quote anything.
- We tell you plainly how the drive out to you fits in, so you know what to expect before the van leaves.
- At the car, we verify ownership. Bring your ID and the registration or title that matches the vehicle.
- We cut the key blade and program the new key through the OBD-II port using professional equipment. On most Hondas no manufacturer PIN code is needed.
- If your car has Driver 1 and Driver 2 memory settings, as some Odyssey, Accord and Pilot trims do, we match each key to the correct memory slot.
- We test everything: the door, the ignition or push-button start, and each remote button. Then we test every key, including the spare.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Honda key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Honda did not switch to chip keys all at once. It moved model by model, so the right answer depends on your exact car. This is the general picture, and we verify the specific year when you call.
Several Hondas kept plain mechanical keys into the early 2000s. The Civic went through 2000 and the CR-V through 2001. Those cars have no immobilizer, which is a big reason older Civics and CR-Vs still show up on theft lists. Any hardware-store copy will start them.
The first chip era used a fixed-code Megamos 13 chip: Accord 1998-2002, Odyssey 1999-2004, Civic 2001-2005, CR-V 2002-2004 and Pilot 2003-2004. After that came the Philips ID46 (Hitag 2) chip: Accord from 2003, CR-V, Odyssey and Pilot from 2005, Ridgeline and Civic from 2006, and Fit from 2009.
Starting with the 2013 Accord, and spreading through the 2014-2017 redesigns, Honda moved to the Honda G chip (ID47, Hitag 3). Smart proximity keys then became standard at each model's next redesign. The newest platform uses Hitag AES '4A' fobs: Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, and CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023. The Odyssey and Ridgeline still catalog as ID47 smart keys through 2026.
One caution: exact changeover years differ by model, and some parts catalogs, especially European ones, list different chips for late-1990s and early-2000s cars. US Hondas follow the eras above. If your year sits near a boundary, we confirm by VIN rather than guess.
What if I have lost every Honda key?
All keys lost sounds worse than it usually is. Hondas are among the more locksmith-friendly cars. Every immobilizer era can be programmed through the OBD-II port, and Honda does not generally require NASTF SDRM credentials for aftermarket immobilizer work. In most cases we can make a working key at your car and you do not need a tow.
There are honest exceptions, and we would rather tell you now than at the curb:
- On the earliest Megamos 13 cars, roughly 1998-2004, some all-keys-lost jobs need extended OBD procedures or bench work on the immobilizer unit or ECU. That takes longer than a routine job.
- On the Hitag AES 4A platform (Accord from 2018, Civic from 2022, CR-V, Pilot and HR-V from 2023), aftermarket all-keys-lost coverage arrived later than add-a-key. Current professional tools, such as the Autel IM series, cover most of these cars. The very newest model years can still be dealer-only until tool support catches up.
- If your Honda falls in that last group, we say so on the phone and confirm coverage before quoting. We will not send a van 46 miles on a hope.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Honda key in Agua Dulce?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the real answer depends on your car. These are the things that move the cost:
- Model and year. A fixed-code Megamos 13 key, an ID46 chip key and a Hitag AES smart fob are different parts with different programming work.
- Key type. A blade-only key, a remote-head key and a push-button smart key sit at very different points on the scale.
- Spare or all keys lost. Adding a key to a car that still has a working one is usually the more economical route. Starting from zero keys takes more work, and on early Megamos 13 cars it can mean bench work.
- How many keys you want. Programming a second key during the same visit is typically more efficient than a separate trip later.
- Whether the car is dealer-only. If the newest model year has no aftermarket coverage, we will tell you rather than start a job we cannot finish.
- Distance and hour. Agua Dulce is outside our Westwood base area, and a middle-of-the-night call is different from a daytime booking.
- Condition of the car. A worn ignition or a faulty antenna ring can add repair work on top of the key itself.
Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Honda?
Both are legitimate, and sometimes the dealer is the right call. If you drive one of the newest model years where aftermarket tools have not caught up, only the dealer can finish the job, and we will say so. The dealer also makes sense when the work is tied to a warranty or recall visit.
For most other Hondas, a mobile locksmith is the easier path. A dealer generally needs the car on its lot, which means a tow if you have no key at all, plus an appointment during business hours. We come to the car, cut and program on site, and you are driving again without hauling a Honda down out of the high desert.
If you have a chip key that works but you want a spare, the dealer-versus-locksmith question matters less than doing it before you lose the last one. A spare made now is nearly always the lighter-cost option compared to an all-keys-lost job later. More general background is on our Honda car keys page.
Honda key problems we see, and what they mean
Some trouble is not a lost key at all. A quick read of the symptom often tells us what the fix is.
- Worn ignition wafers on 1996-2014 Hondas: the key sticks, needs jiggling, or stops turning. Replacing the key alone may not cure it if the lock itself is worn.
- Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder: they open the doors but will not start the engine.
- Cheap cloned or aftermarket chips: they work, then fail intermittently. We would rather program a proper chip than chase a flaky one.
- Cracked remote-head shells, broken keyring holes and worn buttons on 2005-2015 models: often the chip is fine and only the housing needs attention.
- Dead smart-fob battery: the dash says 'key not detected', but the hidden emergency blade still opens the door. If a battery change does not clear it, see our key fob replacement in Agua Dulce page.
- A flashing green key light: this points to an immobilizer issue, such as an antenna-ring or chip fault, not simply a bad key.

Call (213) 577-1366Honda key help across Agua Dulce and ZIP 91390
Agua Dulce is a single ZIP, 91390, but it is a wide one, and we cover all of it: the Agua Dulce Canyon Road town center, the Sierra Highway corridor, the Darling Road area, Sleepy Valley, the stretch near Vasquez Rocks, and the Mint Canyon area to the southwest toward Canyon Country.
The scenarios here are particular. On ranchette properties off Agua Dulce Canyon Road, a Honda is often parked behind a driveway gate, so we plan around the gate and the distance to the house. Near Vasquez Rocks, lockouts happen at rural custom homes where the car sits a long way from the door. At Agua Dulce Airpark, people work around hangars and outbuildings, and a lost key there is a long walk from help.
The climate adds its own wrinkles. Summers are hot and dry, winter nights are cold, and the wind is frequent. Temperature swings shift door frames through the seasons, and dust works into exterior gate locks and padlocks. If you are a new owner on a horse property along Sierra Highway, we also rekey houses, gates and outbuildings, so you can sort the car key and the property locks in one call. Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Honda key in Agua Dulce if I have no key at all?
In most cases, yes. Hondas program through the OBD-II port, and most do not need a manufacturer PIN code. The exceptions are some early Megamos 13 cars (about 1998-2004), which can need extended procedures or bench work, and the newest Hitag AES 4A models, which can be dealer-only. We confirm coverage for your VIN before quoting.
Do I need to tow my Honda to a dealer?
Usually not. We cut and program the key where the car is parked, whether that is a driveway, a barn or beside a gate. The main exception is a very new model year without aftermarket coverage, and we tell you that on the phone before sending a van.
My 1999 Civic key just opens the door and will not start the car. Why?
It was probably cut without a transponder chip, which is a common problem with hardware-store copies. Whether your Civic needs a chip depends on the year. Civics through 2000 had plain mechanical keys, and chip keys started in 2001. Give us the exact year or VIN and we will tell you what the car expects.
My Honda says 'key not detected' but I have the fob. What now?
Start with the fob battery, since a dead one is a common cause. The hidden emergency blade should still open the door. If a fresh battery does not clear the message, the fob or the car's antenna may be at fault, and we can diagnose it on site.
What does the flashing green key light mean?
It points to the immobilizer. That can be an antenna-ring or chip fault rather than a lost key. We check the key, the chip and the car's response before replacing anything.
Can you add a spare Honda key if I still have one that works?
Yes, and it is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job later. We program the new key through the OBD-II port and match it to the right Driver 1 or Driver 2 memory slot if your trim has one.
Do you work on newer Hondas like the 2023 CR-V or 2022 Civic?
Often yes. Current professional tools cover most Hitag AES 4A vehicles. Add-a-key came first, and all-keys-lost coverage came later, so the newest years can still be dealer-only. We confirm before quoting.
What do I need to show you to get a key made?
Photo ID and proof of ownership that matches the vehicle, such as the registration or title. The VIN is on the dash and door jamb, and having it ready speeds up the first call. You can also reach us through the contact page, but for a car you cannot start, phone (213) 577-1366 is faster.
