What does smart lock installation actually involve?
A smart lock is a deadbolt or lever lock that you open without turning a traditional key. Depending on the model, you use a keypad code, a phone app, a fingerprint, a key fob, or a voice assistant. Underneath, it is still a lock bolted into a door, and that is where most installs succeed or fail. The electronics get the attention, but the fit of the bolt in the door edge decides whether the lock works every day for years.
Our job is more than unboxing and screwing in a lock. We check the door, the bore holes, the strike plate and the frame. We choose hardware that suits how you live. We install it, pair it with your phone, set up your codes, and test it from both sides of the door. If you already own a lock you bought online, we can install that one as well, and we will tell you plainly if it is a poor match for your door.
This page covers keyless entry installation, keypad lock installation, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth lock installation, and smart lock setup. If you only want a standard deadbolt, our deadbolt installation page is the better fit. If you are swapping several ordinary locks, see lock installation.
Which type of smart lock fits your door?
There is no single best smart lock. The right choice depends on the door, whether you own or rent, how many people need access, and how much you want to depend on your phone and Wi-Fi. These are the main types we install:
- Keypad deadbolts: a numeric code opens the door and a physical key usually remains as a backup. This is the simplest keyless door lock and a good fit if you do not want an app at all.
- Bluetooth locks: your phone talks to the lock directly at close range. Setup is simple and there is no Wi-Fi dependence, but you generally cannot lock or unlock from across town.
- Wi-Fi locks: these connect to your home network, either directly or through a small bridge, so you can check status and share access remotely. They are convenient and also draw more battery power.
- Hub-based locks: these use a protocol such as Z-Wave or Zigbee and connect to a smart home hub. They suit people who already run a home automation setup.
- Fingerprint and fob locks: good for households where codes get forgotten. We will tell you honestly when the reader on a particular model is likely to be finicky.
- Retrofit add-ons: these sit over your existing deadbolt's interior thumb-turn and leave the outside of the door unchanged. They can be a sensible choice when a landlord will not allow a different exterior lock.

Call (213) 577-1366How do we install and set up a smart lock, step by step?
Every install is a little different, but the sequence is consistent. Here is how a typical visit goes.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us about the door: a front door, an apartment entry, a back gate door, or something else. Tell us if you already have a lock in hand and what phone you use.
- We confirm what we need to know before arriving, such as the door material, the thickness, and whether the door is wood, metal or glass-paneled. Our mobile van carries a range of hardware and tools, and our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd backs it up.
- On site, we inspect the door edge, the bore holes and the strike plate, and we check that the door closes properly before we add a motorized lock to it. A door that rubs or sags is the most common reason smart locks jam.
- We remove the old lock and install the new one. If the existing holes are not a clean match, we correct them rather than forcing the hardware to fit.
- We pair the lock with your phone or hub, join it to Wi-Fi if the model uses it, and update it if an update is available.
- We set up your first user codes and, if you want, a guest code. We show you how to change codes yourself and where the backup key or emergency power contact is.
- We test it repeatedly from outside and inside: locking, unlocking, the deadbolt throw, auto-lock if you use it, and what happens if the batteries are low. We do not leave until it works the way you expect.
How does smart lock installation work in West Hollywood's older buildings and rentals?
West Hollywood is one of the densest small cities in the county, and most residents rent. That shapes the smart lock conversation more than anything else. The housing here is largely 1920s and 1930s courtyard apartments, mid-century dingbats and newer condominium buildings. Each type has its own quirks.
In the older courtyard buildings, many doors are original wood and some still carry vintage locksets. A smart deadbolt can often be added to those doors, but the old wood needs inspection first. Doors that have swelled, been repainted many times, or been drilled for earlier locks may need careful adjustment. On some vintage doors a retrofit device that works with the lock already there is the cleaner answer, because it leaves the original door untouched.
In newer condominium buildings, the unit door is usually a solid or fire-rated slab with specific hardware requirements. Some associations also control what you may put on the exterior of a door. Check your rules before ordering a lock. The same applies to rentals: get your landlord's written okay before changing exterior hardware. If you rent and cannot swap the lock, ask us about a retrofit option that can be removed when you move out.
One more point about controlled-access buildings. Buzzer and intercom entries and shared mailbox banks are standard in West Hollywood multifamily buildings. A smart lock on your own unit door does not replace or interact with the building's entry system. If the mailbox lock is the problem, that is a separate job, covered under mailbox lock replacement.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of smart lock installation?
We do not quote prices on a web page because the real cost depends on your specific door and the hardware you choose. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the number up or down, so nothing surprises you.
If you want the lighter-cost option, a plain keypad deadbolt on a door that is already in good shape is usually the more economical route. Costs rise when the door needs work or the lock has more features.
- The lock itself: a basic keypad deadbolt and a Wi-Fi lock with fingerprint reader are very different products with very different price tags. Whether you supply the lock or we do also matters.
- Door condition: a door that is warped, sagging, or poorly bored needs correction before any lock will work properly. Old wood doors are more likely to need this.
- Number of doors: several doors in one visit are usually handled more efficiently than a single door.
- Extra hardware: a hub, a Wi-Fi bridge, or a door sensor adds to the job.
- Existing keying: if you want the new lock keyed to match other locks, or you want the other locks rekeyed, that is additional work. See lock rekeying.
- Timing and location: calls at night, on weekends or on holidays are handled differently from scheduled daytime installs. We are about seven miles from our Westwood base, which is a normal service distance for us.
- Setup depth: connecting one phone and creating a code is quick. Setting up several users, schedules and smart home links takes longer.
Smart lock setup in West Hollywood: Eastside, Norma Triangle and the Strip
Where you live in the city changes what we see and what we recommend. Here is how smart lock work tends to look across West Hollywood.
On the Eastside, the renter-heavy blocks mean a lot of move-ins. A smart lock can be a convenient way to get a fresh set of credentials without cutting keys, but only if the lease or landlord allows it. Where it does not, we often suggest a standard rekey or a retrofit device. For ZIP 90046, which covers part of this area, many of the entries we see are apartment doors where Wi-Fi range and hallway signal interference are as much of a concern as the lock itself. In a dense building, a lock that connects only by Bluetooth or through a nearby hub can be more dependable than one that depends on a distant router.
In the Norma Triangle and West Hollywood West, where single-family streets cluster, the typical request is for a front door and sometimes a side or back door. Here, house-style keypad deadbolts and Wi-Fi locks are common. These homes have more exterior exposure, so we look at how much direct sun the door gets.
Climate is mild in this part of the basin, and the marine layer has limited reach. The main effect is summer heat and strong sun on south-facing entries, which can dry and fade door finishes. The hardware effects are modest, but we still recommend choosing a lock with a finish that matches the door and positioning any touchscreen with the sun in mind, so the display stays easy to read.
In the 90069 ZIP, which includes the Sunset Strip area, and around the 90048 ZIP near the Design District, you will find a mix of residences, condominium buildings and commercial frontage. Boutique storefronts along Melrose Avenue and the Design District call for different hardware than a home does, and nightlife venues on the Strip need heavier door equipment. If you are asking about a business entry, our access control installation service is a better starting point than a consumer smart lock.

Call (213) 577-1366Smart lock troubleshooting, repair and replacement
Smart locks do fail, and most failures are simple. Before calling anyone, it is worth knowing what usually goes wrong, since many of these problems can be resolved quickly.
The most common cause by far is batteries. A lock that responds slowly, beeps, or works only some of the time is often running low. Replace them with fresh ones of the correct type. The second most common cause is alignment: when a door shifts slightly with age or temperature, the bolt drags against the strike plate and the motor struggles. That looks like an electronic fault but is a mechanical one. Other frequent issues include a lock that dropped off the Wi-Fi after a router change, a phone that was updated and lost its pairing, and codes that stopped working after a time reset.
When we handle smart lock troubleshooting, we start with power, then alignment, then connectivity, then the lock's own settings. If the lock itself is faulty, we explain whether smart lock repair makes sense or whether smart lock replacement is the better choice. We say so plainly if a replacement is the more sensible route, and we say so just as plainly when a repair is enough.
If your lock is jammed and you are locked out, the situation is different, and our apartment lockout page covers what we do. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour.
Smart locks for landlords, short-term rentals and property managers
Because so many West Hollywood residents rent, many of our smart lock questions come from landlords and managers rather than residents. A coded entry can make turnover simpler: you change the code instead of collecting and re-cutting keys. It also lets you issue time-limited codes to cleaners, maintenance staff or guests.
That convenience has trade-offs. Someone has to manage the codes, batteries must be checked, and tenants should know how the lock works and how to get in if it fails. We can explain these trade-offs and set up a system that fits how you run your properties. For ongoing owner needs, see our locksmith for landlords page, and for furnished and guest-facing units, see Airbnb and vacation rental locksmith service.
Check your local rules, lease terms and any building policies before changing entry hardware in a rental. We install the lock, but responsibility for permissions stays with the owner.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a smart lock?
Smart lock work sits between traditional locksmithing and consumer technology, and plenty of companies only do one half. Here is what we bring to it.
- In business since 1987. We learned on mechanical locks, and that matters because a smart lock is only as good as the door and bolt behind it.
- A real storefront and mobile vans. You can visit 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and our vans come to you.
- One company, no dispatch middlemen. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a national call center that sends out whoever is free.
- David's oversight. David, the owner and lead technician, stands behind how the work is done.
- Open every hour. Our phone line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you need help outside normal hours, see our 24-hour locksmith page.
- Honest advice. If a smart lock is a poor choice for your door, your building, or your habits, we will say so and suggest a better option.

Call (213) 577-1366What to ask any locksmith before you hire them
California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS) Locksmith Company (LCO) license. Ask any locksmith you consider for their license number and check it with the state before they start work. Be wary of anyone who will not give it to you.
Also ask how the price is determined, whether they will install a lock you already own, what happens if the lock fails, and whether they will walk you through changing codes yourself. A good installer will answer all of these simply. You should leave the visit knowing how to run your own lock, with no dependence on us for routine code changes.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a smart lock I already bought?
Yes, in most cases. We check that it suits your door's thickness, bore size and edge preparation before we begin. If the model is a poor match for your door or your building, we will tell you before we start rather than force it in.
Will a smart lock work on an old wood door in a courtyard building?
Often yes, but the door has to be inspected first. Older wood doors may be swollen, repainted many times or drilled for earlier locks. We may adjust the door or suggest a retrofit device that works with the existing deadbolt and leaves the door untouched.
Can I install a smart lock in my West Hollywood apartment if I rent?
Check your lease and get your landlord's written permission first. If exterior changes are not allowed, a retrofit device that attaches to the inside thumb-turn can be an option, and it can be removed when you move out. We can explain the choices over the phone.
Do I need Wi-Fi for a smart lock to work?
No. Keypad locks work without any network, and Bluetooth locks talk directly to your phone. Wi-Fi is only needed for remote features like checking status or sharing access from away. In dense buildings, a non-Wi-Fi model is often the more dependable choice.
What happens if the batteries die or my phone is dead?
Most smart locks warn you when the batteries run low, and many have a backup key or an external power contact for emergencies. We show you where these are during setup. Keep spare batteries on hand and replace them when the lock first warns you.
Can you fix or replace a smart lock that stopped working?
Yes. We check batteries, door alignment, connectivity and settings first, since these cause most problems. If the lock itself has failed, we explain whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your model and door.
Does a smart lock replace my building's intercom or mailbox lock?
No. A smart lock on your unit door is separate from the building's buzzer, intercom and shared mailbox system. Mailbox lock problems are a different job, and we handle those too. Our mailbox lock replacement page explains how.
How much does smart lock installation cost?
It depends on the lock you choose, the condition of your door, how many doors we do, any hub or bridge you need, and when you call. A basic keypad deadbolt on a sound door is usually the more economical route. Call (213) 577-1366 and describe your door for a clearer picture.
Can you install smart locks at a business in West Hollywood?
For a business entry we usually recommend commercial-grade hardware or an access control system rather than a consumer smart lock. Storefronts and nightlife venues need heavier equipment. Call us and we will recommend the right setup for your door.
