What do Mercedes-Benz owners in West Hollywood typically need?
West Hollywood is one of the densest small cities in the county, and the large majority of residents rent. That shapes which Mercedes key problems are worth planning for. Many owners live in 1920s–1930s courtyard apartments, mid-century dingbats or newer condominium buildings, where controlled-access entries, buzzers and shared mailbox banks are standard. The car key and the building key often live on the same ring, so one lost set can mean a locked door, a car that will not start, or both at once.
The requests that make the most sense for a Mercedes owner here usually fall into a few groups:
- A spare SmartKey made before the only working one disappears, which is far easier and usually more economical than starting from zero later.
- A replacement for a SmartKey that has worn out after years of daily use and no longer syncs with the car.
- A fresh fob battery or a new shell when the remote buttons die first, or when a Keyless-Go car starts reporting 'key not detected'.
- Help with a key that will not turn or a car that will not release it, where the key is sometimes fine and the ignition or steering lock is the real culprit.
- All-keys-lost situations, which differ enormously depending on the model year.
- Lockouts, which we handle separately on our West Hollywood car lockout page.
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, about 7 miles from West Hollywood, and the phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year. The process is the same whether you are outside a building off Santa Monica Boulevard or parked on a single-family street. What changes is the answer to the first question: which key system does your car use?
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour. We ask for the year, the model, and whether the key goes into the dash and twists or the car has a push-button start.
- We ask for the VIN. On some Mercedes models the key system depends on the production date, so the VIN settles what year and model alone cannot.
- We tell you straight which path applies. If your car is serviceable by a specialist, a van comes to you. If it is a dealer-only FBS4 car, we say so on the phone instead of sending a van that cannot finish the job.
- At the car, we confirm ownership. Expect to show ID and registration that match the vehicle.
- The technician reads the EIS/EZS electronic ignition over infrared or through the OBD port, calculates the key password online, and generates the new key with professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites or Autel IM-series equipment.
- We test the key in the ignition, check the remote functions, and make a spare if you want one. You leave with working keys, not a promise to come back.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Every Mercedes in our reference data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That matters, because there is no simple clonable chip in the way people know it from some other brands. The key and the car talk to each other with rolling codes, and what we can do for you depends on which generation of that system your car has.
The older generation is called DAS3/FBS3. It covers cars from the late 1990s through roughly 2014. The key is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. The key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared. This is the generation that specialist locksmiths can service fully.
The newer generation is FBS4. Mercedes rolled it out model by model rather than all at once:
- Facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production.
- CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014.
- 2014 S-Class (W222).
- 2015 C-Class (W205).
- 2016 GLC (X253).
- 2017 E-Class (W213).
Why are some cars hard to place on that timeline?
The W166 ML/GLE is the clearest example. Most of them stayed on FBS3 through the end of production in 2019. But Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. We do not guess on those. A late ML or GLE is confirmed by VIN before we tell you what is possible.
As a general pattern, FBS4 cars pair with standard push-button start, and FBS4 keys are coded to the VIN at the factory. If your Mercedes has a start button and no key slot, assume FBS4 until the VIN says otherwise. If it has a key slot in the dash, you are very likely on the older, locksmith-friendly system, though the VIN is what we trust.
What if you have lost every key to your Mercedes?
All keys lost sounds like the same problem on every car. On a Mercedes it is really two different problems, split by key generation.
On FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most W166 GLE models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, an all-keys-lost job is something we can do at the curb. The technician reads the EIS/EZS, calculates the password and generates a new key. On the W204 C-Class, the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is also needed, which adds a step and affects both the time and the cost.
On FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, we say plainly that this is effectively dealer territory. Replacement keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait, and budget for it, both in time and in how you will get around meanwhile.
Limited specialist capability for FBS4 is emerging in the trade. It is not something we would ask you to count on, so we do not build your plan around it. If the situation changes for your car, we will tell you. Our lost car key replacement service in West Hollywood page covers the general process for any make.

Call (213) 577-1366When the key is not actually the problem
Plenty of calls that start as 'my Mercedes key stopped working' turn out to be something else. We check for these before cutting anything, because a new key will not fix them.
The classic case is the electronic steering lock. On the W204 C-Class and on W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, the ESL/ELV motor can fail. The dashboard wakes up, everything looks normal, and the key simply will not turn. It feels exactly like a bad key. A failed or worn EIS/EZS ignition can produce the same symptom, with the car refusing to recognize a perfectly good key.
The other common causes are less dramatic:
- SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use.
- Dead fob batteries. The remote buttons go first, and Keyless-Go cars then report 'key not detected'.
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons and broken emergency blades, which can often be dealt with without replacing the whole key.
- On FBS4 cars, a truly lost key, which means a VIN-coded dealer order and a multi-day wait.
What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in West Hollywood?
We do not quote prices on a web page, because for a Mercedes the honest answer depends on a handful of specifics. Here is what moves the cost, so you can see why two cars can end up in very different places:
- Key generation. An FBS3 job we complete on site is a different scale from an FBS4 key ordered through Mercedes.
- Whether you have a working key. Making a copy from an existing key is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job, where the technician must work from the car alone.
- The chassis. W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 cars need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator for all-keys-lost work, which adds equipment and labor.
- Whether the key is the problem. A battery or shell repair costs far less than a new SmartKey, and a failed EIS/EZS or steering-lock motor is a separate repair.
- Number of keys. Making a spare during the same visit is usually more economical than a separate trip later.
- Time and place. Service in the middle of the night, or at a spot where the car is hard to reach, takes more effort than a daytime visit.
Dealer or locksmith: what is fair to say?
For an FBS3 Mercedes, a specialist locksmith is a sensible choice and often the more practical one. We come to the car, we do not need the vehicle moved, and the work is done in one visit with professional diagnostic tools. You avoid the tow, the appointment and the wait for parts.
For an FBS4 Mercedes, the dealer is the right call for added or replacement keys, and we would rather tell you that on the first phone call than waste your time. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process, so the ordering route goes through them. We can still help in related ways: confirming the system by VIN, advising what proof of ownership to bring, and dealing with a dead fob battery or a cracked shell, which often does not require a dealer.
If you are comparing quotes, ask each company a simple question: can you tell me, by VIN, whether this car is FBS3 or FBS4? A company that cannot answer that may not be the right one for your Mercedes. You can also read more on our Mercedes-Benz key service overview or the broader car keys guide.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Mercedes?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are a single company with a storefront in Westwood and our own mobile vans. There is no dispatch middleman who takes your call and hands it to whoever is available. The person you speak with works for the company that sends the van.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on a Mercedes because the decision that counts most is the first one: identifying the key system correctly, and being honest when the answer is a dealer. We would rather lose a job than promise something an FBS4 car cannot deliver.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you consider for their license number before they touch your car. That is a fair question to put to us, too.
Mercedes key service across West Hollywood
West Hollywood spans ZIP codes 90069, 90046 and 90048, and our vans work all of them. The kinds of calls tend to follow the neighborhood. In the multifamily stretches off Santa Monica Boulevard, in the Rainbow District and on the Eastside, many buildings have controlled-access entries and intercoms, so a lost key set often involves a car and a front door together. In the renter-heavy Eastside, a new tenant who gets a Mercedes with one working key often wants a spare made early.
Single-family streets cluster in West Hollywood West and the Norma Triangle, where owners are more likely to be dealing with an older Mercedes that has had years of daily use and a worn SmartKey. Along the Melrose Avenue corridor and in the West Hollywood Design District, the boutique storefronts around the Pacific Design Center see their own lock service needs, and the same van that works on a car can often help with those too. Around the Sunset Strip, Sunset Plaza and West Hollywood Heights, you will find a mix of residential buildings and nightlife venues, and we serve both.
The climate is mild. West Hollywood sits in the mid-basin zone with limited marine-layer reach, and the effects on keys and hardware are modest. Strong sun on south-facing entries can dry and fade door finishes, but it is rarely the reason a Mercedes key fails. Wear, age and battery life are the usual causes. If you want to see everything we do in the city, start with our West Hollywood locksmith page or the West Hollywood car key replacement overview. If only the remote is failing, our key fob replacement service is the closer match. You can also contact us directly.
Mercedes-Benz models in our key guide
Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key at my car in West Hollywood?
For FBS3 cars, yes in most cases. That covers roughly 2000 to 2014 and most W166 GLE models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3. We read the EIS/EZS, calculate the key password and generate a new key at the curb. For FBS4 cars, newer models, we tell you plainly that added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only.
How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
The model year helps, but the VIN decides. As a rule, the older system is the Chrome key or black SmartKey that goes into the dash and twists, while FBS4 cars generally use push-button start. Some models changed partway through production, so give us the VIN and we will confirm before recommending anything.
Why is the late W166 ML/GLE treated differently?
Most of them stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019. But a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So we confirm by VIN rather than assume.
My Mercedes key will not turn, but the dashboard lights come on. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor can mimic a bad key. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can do the same. We check the car before making a key, since a new key would not fix either problem.
I lost every key to my newer Mercedes. What happens now?
On an FBS4 car, keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' service bulletin also requires the vehicle to be registered in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait and plan for it. We will help you work out what to bring.
Will my remote work if you replace the key?
On the FBS3 cars we program, we test the remote functions along with the start function before we leave. If only the remote buttons are failing, a battery or shell repair may fix it without a whole new key.
My Keyless-Go car says 'key not detected'. Is the key broken?
Often it is just a dead fob battery. The remote buttons usually fail first, and then the car stops detecting the key. Try a fresh battery first. If the message continues, the key may have worn out or synced badly, and we can look at it.
Do I need to prove I own the car?
Yes. We ask for ID and registration that match the vehicle, and the dealer asks for proof of ownership on FBS4 orders. It protects you, because it keeps someone else from getting a key to your car.
Do you serve all of West Hollywood?
Yes, including ZIP codes 90069, 90046 and 90048. Our vans come from our Westwood storefront, about 7 miles away, and calls are answered 24 hours a day at (213) 577-1366.
Is the locksmith I hire required to have a license?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work starts, and ask us as well.
