Mercedes-Benz key replacement in West Hills

Wilshire Lock & Key sends mobile technicians to West Hills for Mercedes-Benz key replacement, day or night. Older SmartKey cars we can usually handle at the curb; newer FBS4 models are often dealer-only, and we say so up front. Call (213) 577-1366, answered 24/7, and have your VIN ready.

What do Mercedes-Benz owners in West Hills typically need?

West Hills is almost entirely residential, built mostly from single-story ranch tracts of the 1950s through the 70s. That shapes how Mercedes owners end up needing a locksmith. Most homes here have a driveway and a garage, so the car is usually parked at home, and the typical call is a key that has stopped working rather than one that vanished in a crowded parking structure.

The second pattern is errands. People park near the Fallbrook Center and the Platt Village shopping areas, finish up, and come back to a SmartKey that will not start the car, a dead fob battery, or a key locked inside. The UCLA West Valley Medical Center campus creates a similar situation: people park for long shifts and appointments, and a key problem in a parking lot is a bad time to be without a plan.

Here is what we are usually asked to handle for Mercedes owners in this part of the Valley:

  • A spare key, because the owner is down to one SmartKey and wants a backup before it fails
  • Replacement after a lost key, either one of several or every key
  • A worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing after years of daily use
  • A dead fob battery, especially on Keyless-Go cars that now say the key is not detected
  • A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
  • A key that will not turn in the ignition, which is not always the key's fault
  • A lockout, where the key is in the car or the remote will not unlock the doors

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and West Hills is roughly 23 miles from that base. The work happens where the car is sitting: your driveway, a shopping-center lot, a hospital garage. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers at any hour, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the approximate year, where the car is, and what the key is doing or not doing.
  2. Give us the VIN. On a Mercedes the VIN tells us far more than the model year does, because the key system changed on a model-by-model schedule. It is visible at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb.
  3. We tell you plainly which side of the line you are on. If the car uses the older FBS3 system, it is work we do on site. If it is an FBS4 car, we explain that the dealer route is the realistic one before anyone drives out.
  4. The technician arrives and verifies ownership. Expect to show ID and something tying you to the car, such as registration or title.
  5. For FBS3 cars, the technician connects professional tools to the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) over infrared or through the OBD port, calculates the key password online, and generates the new key.
  6. We test the result: the key has to start the car, turn the ignition properly, and operate the remote functions. If you wanted a spare, we test that one too.

Which Mercedes key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes in the data we work from uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key, and there are two broad generations that matter to you as an owner.

The older generation is FBS3, covering the late 1990s through roughly 2014. This is the familiar infrared key, either the chrome-finish key or the black SmartKey, that inserts into the electronic ignition and twists. The key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared, so there is no simple chip to clone the way there is on some other brands. It is still very serviceable by a specialist with the right tools.

The newer generation is FBS4. Mercedes moved to it on a model-by-model schedule rather than all at once:

  • Facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production
  • CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014
  • New platforms from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213)
  • FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory

What about the ML and GLE, where the answer is not simple?

The W166 ML and GLE stayed on FBS3 for most of production, through the end in 2019. But Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. We do not guess on those cars. We confirm by VIN, and in some cases in person, before telling you which route applies.

The same caution applies to any Mercedes near a transition date. A model year on the registration is a starting point. The VIN decides.

What if I lost every Mercedes key?

All-keys-lost is the situation people dread, and the honest answer depends entirely on the key system.

On an FBS3 car, all-keys-lost is something we can do. Our professional tools read the electronic ignition, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key from scratch. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis, the job also needs an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator, which adds a step and affects the work involved.

On an FBS4 car, we will not tell you we can do it at the curb. Keys for these cars are effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys. They are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin also requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Plan on a multi-day wait. Limited specialist capability on FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something to count on today.

If you are stuck beside the car in the meantime, we can help with the lockout side of it. See our car lockout service in West Hills and our page on lost car key replacement for how those calls work in general.

Is it really the key, or is it the ignition or steering lock?

Not every Mercedes key complaint is a key problem. A failed or worn electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) can leave the car refusing to recognize a perfectly good key, or the key will not turn at all.

The electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor is another known culprit, particularly on the W204 C-Class and on the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class. The dash wakes up, everything looks normal, and the key will not turn. It mimics a bad key almost perfectly.

This matters because replacing a key that was never the problem wastes money and time. When you call, describe exactly what happens: does the dash light up, does the key go in, does it turn partway, does the car say the key is not detected? We would rather diagnose first than cut a key and find out the ignition was at fault. If the real issue is a dead battery in the fob, our key fob replacement service covers that side.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes key in West Hills?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because two Mercedes that look alike can need very different work. These are the things that actually move the cost:

  • Key system: FBS3 work we do ourselves, while FBS4 means a VIN-coded order through the dealer, with its own cost structure
  • Whether you have a working key: adding a spare to a car that still starts is lighter work than all-keys-lost
  • Chassis: W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars need a steering-lock emulator for all-keys-lost
  • The key itself: a Chrome key, a SmartKey, or only a replacement shell or emergency blade are different parts
  • How many keys you want made at once
  • VIN confirmation on cars near a transition date, particularly late W166 models
  • Hour and location: after-hours calls and the drive out to West Hills from our Westwood base are part of the picture
  • Whether the real fault is the ignition or steering lock, which changes the job entirely

Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Mercedes?

The fair answer is that it depends on the car. For an FBS4 Mercedes, the dealer is the realistic route for an added or replacement key. That is how Mercedes handles key security: through its own dealer authorization process, not the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands. We will say so on the phone rather than send a van to a job we cannot finish.

For FBS3 cars, we are often the more practical option. We come to you, so a car that will not start does not have to be towed anywhere. We can handle all-keys-lost on these cars with professional tools, and we can also deal with shells, buttons, and emergency blades.

If you are unsure which camp your car falls in, call and give us the VIN. You will get a straight answer even if the answer is to go to the dealer. You can also read more on our Mercedes-Benz car key page and our overview of car key replacement in West Hills.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We have a real storefront in Westwood and mobile service vans, and the person who answers the phone is part of the same company that sends the technician. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your call along. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One practical note: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work, us included. It is a fair question and a good habit.

The phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you would rather write, our contact page is also available.

Mercedes key service across West Hills

West Hills spans ZIP codes 91307 and 91304, and the setting varies enough that the typical call changes from block to block.

In the ranch tracts off the Valley Circle Boulevard corridor, lots grow larger and more private, which means cars tend to live in driveways and garages. Owners there often call for spare keys or a worn SmartKey rather than an emergency. If your Mercedes key ring also carries original house hardware from a 1960s tract home, that is a good moment to think about rekeying the house too.

Near the Fallbrook Center area and the Platt Village area, the calls are more often in-the-moment lockouts and dead keys after a shopping trip. The Shadow Ranch Park area and the Knapp Ranch Park area are similar residential neighborhoods where cars sit on suburban streets and driveways. Toward the hillside edge near El Escorpion Park and Castle Peak, homes are more private and the driveways can be less convenient, so tell us exactly where the car is when you call.

Summers run hot in this far-west corner of the Valley. That is mostly a door and lock issue at the house, with sun-expanded wood doors, but it is a good reason not to stand beside a car for long waiting for help. Whichever corner of West Hills you are in, call (213) 577-1366, and our West Hills service page shows what else we cover here.

Mercedes-Benz models in our key guide

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key at my house in West Hills?

If the car uses the older FBS3 system, yes, in most cases. Our van comes to the driveway, reads the electronic ignition, calculates the key password online, and generates the key on site. If it is an FBS4 car, the key is ordered through Mercedes, so we will tell you that on the phone.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Year and model help, but the VIN decides. FBS3 covers roughly the late 1990s to 2014, and FBS4 began on a model-by-model schedule, such as the facelifted W212 from April 2013 and the 2015 C-Class. Some late W166 ML and GLE cars are unclear, so we confirm by VIN.

Is a replacement key for a newer Mercedes dealer-only?

For FBS4 cars, effectively yes. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and the car must be registered in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled. Expect a multi-day wait. Specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but do not count on it.

What if I lost all my keys to an older Mercedes?

On FBS3 cars, all-keys-lost is something we can do. We generate a new key with professional tools. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis, a steering-lock emulator is also needed. Bring proof of ownership so we can verify the car is yours.

My key will not turn but the dashboard lights up. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering lock motor behaves just like a bad key. Worn or failed ignition units can also cause it. We would rather diagnose before cutting a key you may not need.

Why does my Mercedes say 'key not detected'?

On Keyless-Go cars, the most common cause is a dead fob battery, because the remote buttons fade first and then detection stops. A SmartKey worn out after years of daily use can also stop syncing. Try the battery first, and call us if the message persists.

What do you need from me to start?

The VIN, the model and approximate year, your location, and a description of what the key is doing. On arrival, the technician will need ID and something tying you to the car, such as registration or title. Ownership verification is standard for any key work.

Do you offer Mercedes key service at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year. Being honest about it, though, an FBS4 dealer order cannot be rushed just because the call comes at night.
