What do Mercedes-Benz owners in View Park–Windsor Hills usually need?
Mercedes-Benz calls tend to fall into a handful of groups: a spare key because only one exists, a fob that has stopped working, a key that will not turn in the ignition, a car locked with the key inside, and the hardest one, no key at all. Before any of that we ask two things. What year and model is it, and does it start with a twist-in key or a push button? Those two answers decide almost everything that follows.
View Park–Windsor Hills is a hillside community of 1920s–1940s homes on curving streets, overwhelmingly single-family and owner-occupied. The realistic lockout situations here are along Angeles Vista Boulevard and the Slauson corridor, including the Slauson Avenue & Overhill Drive commercial corner: you step out, the door shuts, and the key is on the seat or in a bag. That is a different and often simpler job than replacing a key, and our car lockout service in View Park–Windsor Hills covers it.
Many households here may also be in the middle of something bigger, such as a sale or an inheritance in the View Park historic district. A Mercedes in the driveway with one worn key can be a loose end in that situation, and a spare is far easier to make while a working key still exists. Our wider car key replacement page for View Park–Windsor Hills covers other makes; this page is Mercedes only.
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
A Mercedes key is not a job that needs a counter. The tools ride in the van, and the work happens next to your car, whether it is in a driveway on a terraced hillside lot or parked along the street.
- Call (213) 577-1366. A person answers any hour of the day or night. Tell us the year, the model, whether the car has a push-button start, and the VIN if you can read it at the base of the windshield.
- We tell you plainly which route your car takes: something we can finish at the curb, or something that has to go through Mercedes. You hear that before a van is sent.
- We come to you. Expect to be asked to show that the car is yours, since we are making a key that starts it.
- On FBS3 cars, we read the EIS/EZS over infrared or the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate the new key. On W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis, we also use an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator.
- We test everything before we leave: the ignition, the remote functions, and any spare we made. If something else is wrong with the car, we show you rather than sell you a key that will not fix it.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which kind of Mercedes key do you have?
Every Mercedes-Benz in our reference data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That matters, because it changes what any locksmith can and cannot do. For brand-level background, see our Mercedes-Benz car key guide. In plain terms, the eras look like this:
- Late 1990s to roughly 2014 (DAS3/FBS3): the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. Key and car swap rolling codes over infrared, so there is no clone-able chip in the Toyota sense.
- FBS4 arrived model by model: facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production, and CLA/GLA (117/156) from November 2014.
- Some platforms had FBS4 from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253) and 2017 E-Class (W213).
- W166 ML/GLE: most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin (S-B-80.57/62e) lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4. So late cars get confirmed by VIN, never assumed.
What if you have lost every Mercedes key?
It depends on the system in your car, and we would rather say so now than send a van that cannot finish the job.
FBS3 cars (roughly 2000–2014, plus most GLE/W166 cars through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3) are fully serviceable by specialist locksmiths, all-keys-lost included. Professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites and Autel IM-series units read the EIS/EZS, calculate the key password online, and generate new keys. W204 C-Class, W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars also need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator, which adds to the work.
FBS4 cars (approximately 2015 onward, earlier on some models) are effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own bulletin requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait and plan around it. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but it is not something to count on.
Our lost car key replacement page explains the general process for any make.
Problems that look like a bad key but are not
A Mercedes that will not respond to its key is not always a key problem. These are the common causes we check for:
- A failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition, so the key is not recognized or will not turn.
- Electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor failure on W204 C-Class and W207/pre-facelift W212 E-Class. The dash wakes up but the key will not turn, which mimics a bad key.
- SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use.
- Dead fob batteries. Remote buttons die first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'.
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons and broken emergency blades.
- On FBS4 cars, a lost key means a VIN-coded dealer order with proof of ownership and a multi-day wait.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of Mercedes-Benz key replacement?
We will not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your car. These are the real drivers:
- Which system you have. FBS3 can be done by a specialist at the curb; FBS4 goes through Mercedes, with its own ordering process.
- Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is a lighter job than all-keys-lost.
- Whether your chassis needs an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator, as on W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212.
- The type of key: a Chrome key, a SmartKey, or a push-button car's key.
- Whether the key is the problem at all. A dead battery or a worn shell is usually the more economical route compared with a full new key.
- Where you are and how far the van has to travel.
Dealer or locksmith: which one should you call?
For FBS4 cars, the dealer is the real path. We would rather tell you that on the phone than take your time. For FBS3 cars, a specialist locksmith can usually come to you, avoid a trip to a service department, and make the key on the spot, including when every key is gone.
One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before work begins. If you are unsure whether you need us or the dealer, call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will sort it out with you.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. You reach one company, not a dispatch middleman. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. For details about us or other services, visit our home page, or use the contact page if you prefer to write.
Serving View Park, Windsor Hills and the streets around them
Our service covers View Park–Windsor Hills (ZIP codes 90043 and 90008), including View Park and Windsor Hills, and the nearby City of Los Angeles areas of Baldwin Hills, Baldwin Vista, Hyde Park and the Crenshaw District. The community sits about 11 miles from our Westwood storefront. We also work around Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area, which is adjacent, the View Park Bebe Moore Campbell Library, and the Windsor Hills Math Science Aerospace Magnet school.
The View Park historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, and many homes keep their original mortise locks, glass knobs and period hardware. Owners often prefer to repair these rather than replace them, and we also help with house locks, gates and side entrances on hillside lots. See our View Park–Windsor Hills service overview for the full picture. The climate is mild, with marine-layer mornings and breezes, so weather is rarely the issue; the key system in your car is.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key if I have lost all of them?
On FBS3 cars, yes. Specialist tools can read the ignition and generate new keys, including all-keys-lost. On FBS4 cars, roughly 2015 onward, the dealer is effectively the only route, and you should expect a multi-day wait.
Is my 2016 C-Class an FBS4 car?
The C-Class (W205) used FBS4 from its 2015 launch, so a replacement key is effectively a dealer order with proof of ownership. We confirm by VIN in any case.
How do I know if my ML or GLE is FBS3 or FBS4?
Most W166 cars stayed FBS3 through 2019, but Mercedes' bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4. We check the VIN rather than guess.
My key will not turn but the dash lights up. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. On W204 C-Class and W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed steering-lock motor (ESL/ELV) mimics a bad key. We diagnose first.
Can a Mercedes key just be cloned like a Toyota key?
No. The key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared, so there is no clone-able chip as in a Toyota. New keys are generated with professional tools.
My Keyless-Go car says key not detected. What now?
It may just be a dead fob battery, since remote buttons usually fail first. If a new battery does not help, the key may be worn; see our key fob replacement page.
Will I need to prove the car is mine?
Yes. Expect to show ownership and ID. The dealer requires proof of ownership for FBS4 key orders, and we ask for it before making any key.
Do you come to View Park–Windsor Hills at night?
Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and our mobile vans serve View Park–Windsor Hills, which is about 11 miles from our Westwood storefront.
