What does a vacation rental actually need from a locksmith?
A rental door works harder than the door on a home you live in. Strangers use it, the people holding keys change every few days, and the person responsible for it, you, may be across town or across the country when something goes wrong. In View Park–Windsor Hills that is true whether you rent out a whole hillside house or a guest space on your own property.
This page is organized around the jobs hosts bring us again and again, rather than around a single emergency:
- Smart locks and keypads installed and set up for remote check-in.
- Rekeying or changing locks after a lost key, a key a guest never returned, or a cleaner or co-host who has moved on.
- Help building a code-rotation routine, or resetting a lock when the master code has been forgotten.
- Repair of tired or sticky hardware before it fails with a guest standing outside.
- Lockout help at odd hours, including for a guest's car.
- Spare keys and access arrangements for cleaners and property managers.
Why do rental locks wear out and leak access faster than home locks?
Three things happen on a rental door that rarely happen on a family home. The first is key copying. Every metal key you hand to a guest is a key that can be duplicated almost anywhere, and you will never know it happened. A guest with good intentions can still leave a copy in a rental car, a bag or a neighbor's mailbox.
The second is wear. People who don't know a door tend to push it, slam it, drag luggage across the threshold and force a deadbolt that is slightly out of alignment. A latch that catches only when you lift the handle becomes a lockout waiting for a guest at night.
The third is code drift. Codes given to cleaners, handymen and past guests stay active until somebody remembers to delete them. A smart lock only solves the key problem if the habits behind it are kept up. It swaps a key problem for a code and battery problem, and that is usually a better problem to have, as long as you manage it.
How do smart locks, keypads and code rotation work for a short-term rental?
There are a few broad kinds of electronic lock. A basic keypad deadbolt takes a code at the door and works without any network. A Bluetooth lock is managed from your phone when you are nearby. A Wi-Fi or hub-connected lock lets you create, schedule and delete codes remotely, which is what most hosts want for self check-in. Which one fits depends on the door, how strong your Wi-Fi is at that exact spot, and how many turnovers you run. What a given model can do, such as scheduled codes or an activity log, varies by manufacturer, so we go over the specifics of the lock before you commit.
Our smart lock installation work for hosts usually goes like this:
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us about the door, the lock that is on it now, whether Wi-Fi reaches that doorway, and how you check guests in.
- We recommend a lock type and explain plainly what it can and cannot do, including how it behaves if the network or the battery goes down.
- Before installing, we check the door itself: alignment, strike plate, and the bore and latch prep. Electronic locks are less forgiving of a door that binds.
- We install the lock, align it, and test the bolt through its full throw from both sides.
- We set up your master code, create a test guest code, and show you how to delete and rotate codes yourself.
- We point out the mechanical key override if the lock has one, and talk through a plan for batteries and low-battery warnings so the lock doesn't die mid-stay.

Call (213) 577-1366What if the house has original mortise locks or period hardware?
The View Park historic district was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, and many homes in View Park–Windsor Hills still have their original mortise locks, glass knobs and period hardware. Their owners often prefer to repair that hardware rather than replace it. If you host in one of these houses, you may be wondering how a smart lock fits in.
A mortise lock sits in a deep pocket cut into the edge of the door. Most smart locks are designed for standard drilled holes, so swapping one in is not a simple bolt-on job. The realistic options are to keep and restore the original lock on the main entrance through lock repair, and put a keypad deadbolt on a secondary door where the door can take it. Another option is to use hardware that leaves the original in place. We will talk through what each option does to a 1930s or 1940s door before anyone cuts into it.
Glass knobs and old spindles can loosen with heavy guest use, so it is worth having them checked before the busy season. If your property has any rules about exterior changes, confirm them first. We are locksmiths, not preservation advisors, and we would rather you know before the work than after.
What happens when a guest is locked out or loses a key?
Guests lock themselves out at all hours, and our phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year, through our 24-hour locksmith service. When you are the one calling from somewhere else, the sequence matters, because we need to be sure we are opening a door for someone who has the right to be there.
- Call (213) 577-1366 with the address, the type of door and lock, and whether the guest is on site.
- We confirm authority. As the host or owner, you tell us who you are and who is at the door, and we work out how to verify that, since we will not open a door on a stranger's word alone.
- We start with non-destructive entry, which protects the door and the lock, and which matters most on older wood doors.
- If a key is lost, you choose between leaving the lock alone and changing it. If the key could be in unknown hands, we recommend rekeying the lock, which makes the lost key useless without replacing the hardware.
- We cut replacement keys for the host, cleaner or co-host as needed, using our key duplication service.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of keeping a rental door secure?
We don't quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the door and the job. These are the things that move the cost:
- The kind of lock: a basic keypad deadbolt, a connected smart lock and a mortise lock restoration are very different jobs.
- How many doors are involved: main entrance, side entrance, back door, gate, and any separate guest unit.
- The condition of the door. A door that is out of square or has an old bore may need adjustment before any lock will work well on it.
- Rekeying versus replacing. When the hardware is sound, rekeying is usually the more economical route after a lost key.
- The time of day. After-hours and holiday calls involve different logistics than a scheduled weekday visit.
- Distance and parts. View Park–Windsor Hills is about 11 miles from our Westwood base, and if a part has to come from the storefront, that is part of the plan.
- Scale: hosts with several doors or several properties often save effort by combining visits.
What is different about hosting on a View Park–Windsor Hills hillside?
View Park–Windsor Hills is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, covering ZIP codes 90043 and 90008, with the neighborhoods of View Park and Windsor Hills. Baldwin Hills, Baldwin Vista, Hyde Park and the Crenshaw District sit nearby inside the City of LA. For check-in instructions, landmarks help guests find you: Kenneth Hahn State Recreation Area is adjacent, and the View Park Bebe Moore Campbell Library, Angeles Vista Boulevard and the Slauson Avenue and Overhill Drive commercial corner are all close.
The housing here is overwhelmingly single-family and owner-occupied, in 1920s to 1940s Spanish Colonial Revival, Mediterranean and traditional styles on curving streets. So a rental here is more often a house, or part of one, than a unit in a big building with a lobby and a shared entry system. That changes the lock picture. Your guest arrives at a front door, a gate or a side entrance, not a controlled lobby, and each of those is a point you need to control. Many lots are terraced, so side-entrance and gate locks matter as much as the front door, and our gate lock repair covers the ones that get overlooked until they fail. Before choosing a connected lock for a gate or side door, check that Wi-Fi actually reaches it. On a stepped lot it often doesn't reach as far as you would expect.
The hilltop climate is mild, with breezes and marine-layer mornings off the nearby coast. Older wood doors swell only a little with the seasons, so a door that suddenly sticks for a guest usually points to alignment or worn hardware rather than the weather. Guests with cars also get locked out, and we handle car lockouts along Angeles Vista Boulevard and the Slauson corridor.

Call (213) 577-1366Why do hosts call Wilshire Lock & Key?
Hosting is a business that runs on someone being reachable. Here is what we can honestly offer:
- We have been in business since 1987, so we have worked on the old hardware and the new electronics that show up in this community.
- We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, so parts and key cutting are in one place and the work happens at your door.
- We are one company. The person who answers the phone works for the same company that sends the technician, with no dispatch middlemen in between.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
- The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, which matters when your guest's flight lands at midnight.
- We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, which is handy if your hosting extends past one address.
What does a good turnover-day lock routine look like?
You don't need to be a lock expert, but a short routine catches most problems before a guest does. If you also own long-term rentals, our page on locksmith services for landlords covers that side of the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, called a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you hire for their license number before they start.
- Delete the departing guest's code and create the new one, rather than reusing codes between stays.
- Check the battery indicator on every electronic lock, and replace batteries on a schedule instead of waiting for a warning.
- Test the mechanical key override at least once in a while, so you know it still turns.
- Count your physical keys. If one is unaccounted for, rekey the lock instead of hoping it turns up.
- Open and close the door, gate and side entrance yourself, and note any that drag, catch or need a lift to latch.
- Remove codes from cleaners, handymen and co-hosts who no longer work with you.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a smart lock so my guests can check in without me?
Yes. We install keypad and connected smart locks, set up your master code and a test guest code, and show you how to add, schedule and delete codes. Features such as scheduled codes differ by lock model, so we go over what your chosen lock supports first.
How often should I change the door code between guests?
Ideally every stay. Create a fresh code for each guest and delete it after checkout. Codes shared with cleaners and co-hosts should be reviewed regularly and removed when someone stops working with you.
Should I rekey or replace the lock if a guest doesn't return a key?
If the hardware is in good shape, rekeying is usually the more economical route, because it makes the unreturned key useless without a new lock. Replacement makes sense when the lock is worn, damaged or no longer suits how you run the rental.
Will a smart lock work with my original mortise lock?
Usually not as a direct swap, because most smart locks are built for standard drilled holes rather than a mortise pocket. Many owners restore the original lock on the main door and add a keypad deadbolt on a secondary entrance, or choose hardware that leaves the original alone. We discuss it before cutting any old door.
What if the battery dies while a guest is outside?
Many smart locks have a mechanical key override or a way to power the lock briefly from outside. Call us at (213) 577-1366 and we will tell you what the lock allows, or open it ourselves. The best prevention is to replace batteries on a schedule.
Can you help my guest if I'm not at the property?
Yes, but we need to confirm that the request really comes from the owner or host. You call, tell us who is at the door, and we agree on how to verify it before we open anything.
Do you make keys for cleaners and co-hosts?
We do. We can duplicate standard keys at our Westwood storefront or on a service visit. Some restricted or high-security keys need authorization first, and we explain what is needed when you call.
Does a locksmith need a license in California?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Whoever you hire, ask for the license number before the work begins, and check it if you want extra reassurance.
