What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Toluca Lake usually need?
Mercedes-Benz calls its key a SmartKey, and nearly every owner who calls us has one of two problems: a key that has stopped working, or no key at all. Which of those you are facing matters less than a different question: which generation of key electronics is in your car. That one answer decides whether we can finish the job at your curb or whether the dealer has to be involved. We will tell you which it is, plainly, before anyone spends money.
Toluca Lake is small, and the way people live here shapes the calls. Many of the homes are 1920s and 30s traditional and ranch estates, often behind gates and privacy hedges, so a lockout tends to happen in a driveway or motor court where the car and the key ended up on opposite sides of a door. Along Riverside Drive and the Cahuenga edge, low-rise condos and apartments mean the car may be a walk from your unit, which turns a dead fob or a misplaced spare into a real errand. And in the Riverside Drive village district, the classic story is a dinner out: key in a jacket pocket, jacket left at the table, car locked on the street.
- A spare or replacement key for an older SmartKey or Chrome key Mercedes
- A key that will not turn, or a car that no longer recognizes it
- A dead fob battery, cracked key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
- A lockout with the key inside the car or the house
- All keys lost, which is a different job depending on the model year
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
Our vans come to you, whether that is a driveway behind a gate, a condo lot, or a spot on Riverside Drive. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, roughly 15 miles from Toluca Lake as the base distance, and the phone is answered around the clock. The first call is mostly a short interview, because the details you give us change the plan.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model, the approximate year, and whether you have any working key at all.
- We work out the likely key generation from that, then confirm it against the VIN. For late-build cars, the VIN is the only reliable answer.
- We ask you to show that the car is yours before we cut or program anything. That is standard for any honest locksmith and it protects you.
- If your car is a serviceable generation, we read the electronic ignition, calculate the key data, and generate the new key on site.
- We test the key in the ignition, with the remote functions, and with the emergency blade, and we leave you with every key working.
- If your car is a dealer-only generation, we say so on the phone or at the curb and explain what the dealer order involves, instead of letting you wait for a visit that cannot solve the problem.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key do you have? The key eras in plain terms
Every Mercedes we deal with uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That sounds like a small point, but it changes how the work is done. The key and the car do not rely on a simple chip you could clone the way a Toyota's can. They exchange rolling codes, and the car's electronic ignition has to be involved in making a new key.
From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used what is called the DAS3/FBS3 system. The key is the familiar infrared Chrome key or black SmartKey that slides into the electronic ignition module, the EIS or EZS, and twists. Those cars are where specialist locksmiths do their best work.
Mercedes then moved to FBS4 on a model-by-model schedule. The facelifted W212 E-Class changed from April 2013 production, and the CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014. New platforms arrived with it from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
The messy middle is worth knowing about. Most W166 ML and GLE SUVs stayed on FBS3 until production ended in 2019, yet a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So for those, and for any car near a changeover date, we confirm by VIN rather than guess from the model year.
What if you have lost every Mercedes key?
All keys lost is the situation people dread, and the honest answer depends entirely on the generation. On FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most GLE/W166 SUVs through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, a specialist can still do it. Professional tools of the class sold by Xhorse, Abrites, and Autel read the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key. No original key is needed.
One wrinkle: on the W204 C-Class, the W207, and the pre-facelift W212 E-Class, the job also calls for an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator. That adds a step and some time, and it is a normal part of those chassis, not a sign something has gone wrong.
On FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, a lost key is effectively a dealer job. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait. A few specialists are beginning to offer limited FBS4 capability, but that is not something we would tell you to count on.
If you are in that spot, our lost car key replacement service in Toluca Lake page walks through what to gather first: registration, ID, and the VIN, which is visible through the windshield.

Call (213) 577-1366When the key is not the real problem
Plenty of Mercedes owners call about a bad key that turns out to be something else, and it is worth ruling that out before you pay for a new one. The most common false alarm is the electronic steering lock. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, the ESL/ELV motor can fail, and the symptom looks like a key problem: the dashboard wakes up, but the key will not turn. A new key will not fix that, and we would rather tell you than sell you one.
Failed or worn EIS/EZS ignition modules do the same thing in a different way: the key is not recognized or will not turn. SmartKeys also simply wear out after years of daily use and stop syncing.
Dead fob batteries come first on the list for many cars. The remote buttons go first, and then on Keyless-Go cars the dash reports that the key is not detected. That is usually a battery or a worn fob, not a lost key. Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades are mechanical, and are often repairable without a new key. For fob-specific problems, see our key fob replacement in Toluca Lake page.
- Dash lights up but the key will not turn: suspect the steering lock motor on certain C-Class and E-Class chassis
- Remote buttons weak or dead: try the battery before anything else
- 'Key not detected' on a push-button car: battery or a worn fob
- Cracked shell or broken blade: often a repair, not a full replacement
How much does Mercedes-Benz key replacement cost in Toluca Lake?
We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest price depends on facts we do not have until we know your car. We can tell you what moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you receive from anyone.
The biggest factor is the key generation. An FBS3 key made by a specialist is a different kind of job than an FBS4 key ordered from Mercedes, which comes pre-coded to your VIN and carries the cost of the dealer process and the wait.
Next is whether you have a working key. Making a copy from an existing key is simpler than an all-keys-lost job, which involves reading the ignition and calculating key data. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars, an all-keys-lost job also needs the steering-lock emulator step.
Other factors: whether the fob shell or blade also needs replacing, whether the EIS/EZS or ESL has actually failed, how far we travel, and the hour of the call. A middle-of-the-night visit costs more to staff than a weekday morning one. If your car can wait until daytime, that is usually the more economical route, and we will say so.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: which makes sense?
This is not an either-or in every case, and we would rather you choose well than choose us by default.
For FBS3 cars, a specialist locksmith is a sound choice. The work happens where the car sits, there is no tow, and a lost-key job does not have to turn into a multi-day wait. For a Mercedes on the road that is a decade or more old, this is often the more practical route.
For FBS4 cars, the dealer is where the keys come from. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process, not the NASTF/SDRM route used by domestic brands. We will not pretend otherwise or promise a roadside miracle. What we can do is help with the parts around the edges: getting you into the car if you are locked out, diagnosing whether the problem is the key at all, and telling you what to bring to the dealer so the order goes smoothly. If you have a lockout on top of everything else, our car lockout service in Toluca Lake page covers it.
Either way, budget for the timeline. With FBS4, the multi-day wait for a VIN-coded key is part of the deal, so if a Mercedes is your only car, plan your week around it.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes key?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. There is a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and a fleet of mobile service vans. When you call, you reach our company, not a dispatch middleman who sells the job to whoever is closest. The person on the phone answers for the work, and David, who owns the company and is our lead technician, oversees how we do it.
We also try to be useful when the answer is not a sale. If your car is FBS4, we will tell you. If your problem is a steering-lock motor or a fob battery, we will tell you that too.
One more thing worth doing with any locksmith, us included: ask for the BSIS license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold a Bureau of Security and Investigative Services locksmith company license, known as an LCO license, and a legitimate company will be able to give it to you. Ask before anyone starts work on your car.

Call (213) 577-1366Mercedes-Benz keys around Toluca Lake and ZIP 91602
Toluca Lake's ZIP code is 91602, and the neighborhood is a compact mix: the private lake enclave, the Riverside Drive village commercial district, and adjacent pockets such as West Toluca Lake on the North Hollywood side, Toluca Woods, and Toluca Terrace. We work all of them.
In the lake enclave and in the estates around Lakeside Golf Club, you are often dealing with gated drives and older homes. A Mercedes parked in a motor court is easy to reach with a van, but we like to call ahead about gate codes so we are not left waiting at the entrance. Owners of 1920s and 30s houses sometimes have us handle the car key and the house lock in the same visit, since these older properties often mix vintage hardware with modern retrofit security.
Along Riverside Drive, near spots like the historic 1949 Bob's Big Boy, the calls are more likely to be lockouts and dead fobs in busy street parking or condo lots. Landmarks like Warner Bros. Studios and Universal Studios Hollywood sit just outside the neighborhood, and drivers who commute toward them sometimes call us from the road.
Weather rarely complicates the work here. Summer heat is standard for the southeast valley, and there are no coastal corrosion issues. Mature trees keep some streets shadier and slightly damper in winter, which is mostly a reminder that a fob living in a pocket or a wet jacket will eventually need a new battery. What to have ready when you call
A few details speed everything up. Have your model and approximate year, the VIN if you can read it through the windshield or from your registration, and your ID. Tell us whether you have any working key, and whether any warning appeared on the dash. Photos of the key and the ignition area, if you can send them, help too.
If you would rather start with a message than a call, use our contact page. But for a locked-out or stranded driver, the phone is faster, and it is answered 24 hours a day at (213) 577-1366.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new key for a 2018 Mercedes C-Class?
A 2015-onward C-Class (W205) uses the FBS4 system, and replacement keys for FBS4 cars are effectively dealer-only. The key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and you should expect a multi-day wait. We will tell you that plainly and help with a lockout or diagnosis if you need it.
Can you replace a Mercedes key if I have lost all of them?
On FBS3 cars, yes. Roughly 2000 to 2014, plus most GLE/W166 models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, a specialist can read the electronic ignition and generate a new key without an original. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars, a steering-lock emulator is part of the job. FBS4 cars go through the dealer.
How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Model year is a guide, not proof. Changeover dates vary by model, and some late W166 cars can be FBS4, so we confirm by VIN. Push-button start with a VIN-coded factory key generally points to FBS4, but a VIN check is the reliable answer.
My Mercedes key will not turn but the dashboard lights up. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering lock motor can behave exactly like a bad key. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can also stop recognizing a good key. We check before replacing anything.
Why does my Mercedes say 'key not detected'?
On Keyless-Go cars, the most common cause is a dead fob battery. The remote buttons usually weaken first. If a fresh battery does not fix it, the fob itself may be worn out and no longer syncing with the car.
Can you copy my Mercedes key like a regular car key?
Not in the sense of cloning a chip. Mercedes keys exchange rolling codes with the car rather than carrying a clone-able transponder, so a new key has to be generated through the car's electronics. On serviceable FBS3 cars, that is something we do on site.
How long does it take to get a key from the Mercedes dealer?
For FBS4 cars, expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered coded to your VIN, and Mercedes requires proof of ownership and registers the car in Xentry Diagnostics before the key can be enabled. If your Mercedes is your only car, plan for that.
Do you come to Toluca Lake at night?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and mobile vans serve Toluca Lake and ZIP 91602. After-hours calls cost more to staff, so if the car can safely wait until morning, ask us about it.
Should I ask a locksmith for a license?
Yes, any locksmith. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you are entitled to ask for the number before work begins. A legitimate company will give it to you without hesitation.
