What does it mean to rekey locks?
Rekeying is what most people actually want when they say they need new locks. Inside each lock cylinder is a set of small pins, and the key lifts them to exactly the right height so the cylinder can turn. When we rekey, we take the cylinder apart, swap those pins for a new combination, and cut a new key to match. The lock stays on your door. The old key stays in your pocket or a drawer, but it no longer opens anything.
That is the whole point. If you lost a key, moved into a place with an unknown number of copies floating around, or just had a tenant move out, you usually do not need new hardware. You need the old keys to stop working. Rekeying does that, and it is typically the more economical route compared with replacing every lock, as long as the locks themselves are in good shape.
One honest caveat: a rekey does not make a lock stronger. A basic lock that has been rekeyed is still the same basic lock. If you want better protection, that is a separate conversation, and we will tell you plainly whether it is worth it for your door.
When should you rekey your house locks?
The rekey calls we get follow a few patterns, and they all come down to one question: do you know who has a key?
- Rekey locks after moving in: previous owners, tenants, agents, cleaners, and contractors may all have held copies, and nobody can tell you how many.
- Rekey locks after buying a house: the days around closing are the cleanest moment to reset every door at once, before the furniture arrives.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out: you cannot be sure every key came back, and the next tenant should be the only one with access.
- Rekey locks after losing keys: if the keys went missing somewhere unknown, especially with an address attached, a rekey closes that door for good. If you dropped a key in your own driveway and found it ten minutes later, you probably do not need one.
- After a breakup, a roommate leaving, or ending things with a house sitter or helper.
- When you want a single key: rekey all house locks to match so the front door, back door, side door, and garage entry all open with one key.
How do we rekey your locks, step by step?
Here is how a typical visit goes. A mobile van comes to you, so the work happens at your door.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us how many locks are involved, the brand if you know it, and what happened.
- We look at every lock before touching it: how it turns, whether it is worn, and whether the door itself lines up with the strike plate.
- We tell you what we found. If a lock is a good candidate, we rekey it. If one is too worn or damaged to hold up, we say so and explain the alternatives.
- We confirm the plan with you: how many keys you need, and whether you want all doors on one key or separate keys by door.
- We pull each cylinder, replace the pins, reassemble it, and cut new keys.
- We test every lock with the new key, repeatedly, and confirm the old key no longer turns it.
- We hand over the keys and show you anything worth knowing about your hardware.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Should you rekey or replace the lock?
Rekey when the lock works smoothly, you like how it looks, and your only concern is who holds a key. Replace when the lock is worn, sticky, cracked, loose in the door, or simply not the level of protection you want.
If your situation is closer to a full swap, our change locks and lock replacement pages explain how that works. If you are thinking about keypad or app-based entry, that is a different job, covered under smart lock installation.
Some locks cannot be rekeyed well. Very old mechanisms with worn internals, locks with missing parts, and certain lines with no available replacement parts fall in that group. We will tell you before we start, not after. The point of looking first is that you only pay for work that makes sense.
How much does lock rekeying cost in Studio City?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on your doors. Here is what moves the cost up or down:
- How many cylinders: one deadbolt is a smaller job than every exterior door, a side gate, and a garage entry.
- Lock type and brand: standard residential deadbolts are straightforward, while mortise cylinders and restricted-keyway locks take more care.
- Condition: a smooth, healthy lock rekeys easily. A worn one may need repair first.
- How many keys you need cut.
- Whether you want everything keyed alike, which can mean adjusting locks from different brands.
- Time of day: a middle-of-the-night call is different from a scheduled visit.
- Distance: Studio City is roughly 11 miles from our Westwood storefront, and travel is part of how a mobile job is planned.
What about apartment lock rekey and tenant turnover?
Tenant turnover rekey is one of the most routine jobs there is, and one of the most worthwhile. When a tenant leaves, every key they ever copied leaves with them. Rekeying the entry lock and deadbolt, and any mailbox, laundry room, or gate lock tied to the unit, means the next tenant is the only one with access.
If you manage rentals, our page on locksmith services for landlords covers how we work with owners and property managers on turnovers. For a building with many units, a master key system can let one key open a set of doors while tenants keep their own.
If you rent and you are the one worried about keys, talk to your landlord first. Changing a lock without permission can cause trouble with your lease, and a landlord who agrees to a rekey usually prefers it to a full swap.

Call (213) 577-1366Can you handle commercial and business lock rekey?
Yes. A commercial rekey comes up when an employee leaves, a manager is let go, a lease changes hands, or nobody can say how many keys to the back door are out there. We rekey storefront and back-door cylinders, office entries, and often the cylinders inside commercial hardware.
For shops and restaurants, we can work around your hours. We answer the phone around the clock, and an overnight or early-morning rekey means you open with new keys. For ongoing needs like multiple staff levels or several doors on one system, see our commercial locksmith page. A business lock rekey is also a good time to look at whether your door hardware is holding up.
Lock rekey around Studio City: cottages, canyons, and the boulevard
Studio City's housing stock shapes what a rekey looks like here. In Colfax Meadows, Tujunga Village, and the Silver Triangle, you find 1920s to 1940s homes in Spanish, Tudor, and cottage styles, and many still have vintage mortise locksets in service. In these, the cylinder can often be rekeyed or swapped while the original lock body stays on the door. We look first. If the mechanism is worn, it may need lock repair before a new key makes any sense.
The canyons south of Ventura Boulevard, including the Fryman Canyon hillsides, the Laurel Canyon hillside streets, and the Coldwater Canyon corridor, have mid-century and newer hillside homes. Many have gates or smart locks, and a rekey there often means sorting out which entry points use a physical key and which do not. Hillside lots also get more winter shade and damp than the open valley floor, which can swell wood doors seasonally. A swollen door makes a lock bind and feel like a keyway problem when it is really the door. Rekeying will not fix a tight door, so we check the fit as part of the visit.
North of the boulevard, apartments and condos cluster along Moorpark Street and Ventura Place, which is where tenant turnover rekeys are most common. Whether you are in 91604 or 91602, a mobile van comes to you. Studio City is about 11 miles from our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and shops along Ventura Boulevard are covered the same way.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach our company, not a dispatch broker who sells the job to whoever picks it up. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work, including us. A real company will not mind the question. Ask also whether the person quoting is the person doing the work, and whether the cost is explained before the first screw comes out.
Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, so a rekey after a lost key or a late move-in does not have to wait for morning.
Frequently asked questions
Will my old keys still work after a rekey?
No. That is the purpose of rekeying. Once the pins are changed, the old key will not turn the lock. We test this on every lock before we leave.
Can you rekey all the locks in my house to one key?
Usually, yes. If your locks are different brands, we may need to adjust or swap a cylinder so they all match. We will tell you which locks work and which do not before we start.
Can vintage mortise locks in older Studio City homes be rekeyed?
Often they can, since the cylinder is separate from the lock body. We inspect first. If the internal parts are worn out, we will recommend repair or replacing the cylinder and be clear about why.
What is the difference between rekeying and changing the locks?
Rekeying changes the inside of your existing lock so a new key fits. Changing the locks means replacing the hardware itself. Rekeying is typically the more economical route when the locks are in good shape.
Can you rekey locks near me late at night or on a weekend?
Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and our mobile vans serve Studio City from our Westwood base. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will go over what you need.
Do I need to rekey after buying a house?
We recommend it. You do not know how many copies the previous owners, agents, or contractors made. Rekeying every exterior lock at once gives you a clean start.
Do you rekey commercial locks for shops and restaurants?
Yes. We rekey storefront, back-door, and office cylinders, and can set up several doors on one key or a master system. Employee turnover is the most common reason for a commercial rekey.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate in California?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the number and check it. Also ask whether the cost will be explained before work begins.
Will rekeying fix a door that sticks or binds?
Not if the problem is the door itself. In hillside areas, damp can swell wood doors seasonally and make a lock feel stiff. We check the fit and tell you if the fix is the door, not the cylinder.
