What counts as a high security lock?
The phrase gets used loosely, so here is what we mean by it. A high security lock is a cylinder, and often the deadbolt around it, built to resist the ways people actually defeat ordinary locks: picking, bumping, drilling, and copying the key at a hardware-store kiosk. The difference is not the shiny finish or the heavy feel in your hand. It is what is inside the cylinder and how the key is controlled.
A standard builder-grade lock has loose tolerances, simple pins, and a key that anyone can duplicate in thirty seconds. A high security cylinder tightens those tolerances, adds pins or sidebars that fight a pick, and uses a keyway whose blanks are restricted. That last point matters more than most people expect. If nobody can walk into a shop and cut a copy without proof of authorization, you actually know how many keys exist.
We do not sell magic. No lock is pick-proof or bump-proof, and we will not tell you otherwise. What we sell is a real, measurable step up in resistance, fitted properly to a door that can support it.
- Pick-resistant locks: security pins, tighter tolerances, and sometimes a second locking element that makes manipulation slow and unreliable.
- Bump-resistant locks: internal designs that blunt the effect of a bump key, which works on many ordinary pin tumbler cylinders.
- Restricted keys: key blanks and keyways controlled so copies are not casually available.
- Hardened components: inserts that make drilling and forced entry harder at the cylinder face.
Why do Studio City homes and shops ask for them?
In our experience, the call usually starts with one of a few situations. Someone has moved into a house and has no idea how many keys are floating around from previous owners. A landlord is tired of copies that nobody can account for. A shop owner on the boulevard wants control over who can open the back door. Or a homeowner simply read something about bump keys and wants to stop worrying about it.
Studio City is a mix of older character homes, newer hillside houses, apartments and condos, and a busy commercial strip. Those are very different doors with very different needs, and a high security lock is not a one-size answer. A restricted keyway on a front deadbolt solves a different problem than a restricted key system across a small business with several employees.
That is why we start with the question of what you are protecting and from whom, not with a product catalog. Sometimes the answer is a high security cylinder. Sometimes it is a simple rekey and a stronger strike plate. We would rather tell you that than sell you hardware the door cannot use.

Call (213) 577-1366How do pick-resistant and bump-resistant locks actually work?
Most residential locks are pin tumbler cylinders. Spring-loaded pins sit in stacks, and the right key lifts each stack to the shear line so the plug can turn. Picking manipulates those pins one at a time. Bumping uses a specially cut key and a sharp tap to jolt pins out of the way for an instant. Both rely on pins that move cleanly and tolerances that are sloppy enough to forgive.
High security cylinders work against that. Security pins, such as spool and serrated shapes, give false feedback when someone is picking, so the pins seem to set when they have not. Tighter machining leaves less room to work. Some designs add a sidebar or a second set of elements that must also align before the plug turns, which means a pick has to solve two problems at once. Bump resistance usually comes from pin designs and internal geometry that stop the energy of a bump from transferring the way it does in a plain cylinder.
Resistance buys time and raises the skill required. It does not erase the risk, and the cylinder is only one part of the door. If the strike plate is held by short screws into soft trim, or the frame is cracked, a good cylinder does not help much. We look at all of it.
How we handle a high security lock installation, step by step
Whether you call on a weekday or in the middle of the night, the process is the same. Here is what to expect from us.
- You call (213) 577-1366. A person answers, at any hour, and we talk through what door you are dealing with and what is prompting the change.
- We come to you in a mobile van, or you can stop by our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood if the lock is something you can bring in.
- We inspect the existing lock, the door, the edge bore, the strike, and the frame. We check whether the door is square and whether the latch actually lines up.
- We explain your options: which cylinder type fits, whether you need a new deadbolt body or only a new cylinder, and how the restricted key system works, including who can authorize additional copies.
- We install the hardware, reinforce the strike and frame where needed, and fit the lock so it throws smoothly without forcing.
- We test every key, cycle the lock repeatedly with the door open and closed, and show you how the key control works so you know what to do if you ever need another copy.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of high security lock installation?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because honest pricing depends on the door in front of us. Here is what actually moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you receive, ours included.
The biggest factor is the cylinder system itself. Restricted keyways with patent-protected or tightly controlled blanks cost more than a standard pin tumbler with security pins, because the hardware and the key control behind them are more involved. The number of locks matters too, particularly if you want them all keyed alike or arranged in a small hierarchy.
Next is whether you need a full replacement or a cylinder swap. If your existing deadbolt body is sound, the lighter-cost option is often to upgrade the cylinder and strike while keeping the hardware. If the body is worn, poorly fitted, or an unsuitable grade, replacing the whole lock is usually the more economical route over time.
Door condition counts. A door that has swollen or shifted may need adjustment or frame work before any lock will perform properly. Time of day is a factor as well, since after-hours calls involve a technician coming out at night. Finally, the number of keys, and any additional controlled copies, affect the total. We give you the full picture before we start work, not after.
- Type of cylinder and degree of key control
- Number of locks and whether they are keyed alike
- Full lock replacement versus cylinder upgrade
- Door, frame, and strike plate condition
- After-hours versus daytime service
- Number of keys and authorized duplicates
What should Studio City homeowners know about high security locks on local doors?
Studio City is not one kind of street, and the doors reflect it. In Colfax Meadows, Tujunga Village, and the Silver Triangle, you find 1920s-40s homes in Spanish, Tudor, and cottage styles, and many still have their vintage mortise locksets. Those are often worth keeping, and a high security upgrade does not always mean ripping them out. Mortise locks take a separate cylinder, so in many cases we can fit a pick-resistant, bump-resistant cylinder into the existing body, depending on its condition and the cylinder type. If the lockset itself is failing, our lock repair work comes first so the new cylinder has a sound mechanism behind it.
Older doors raise another point. A good cylinder is wasted on a worn strike or a frame that has been painted shut and re-cut over decades. We check the whole door, and we stay mindful of the character of these homes, so the finish and look still suit the house.
Up in the canyon and hillside streets, including the Fryman Canyon hillsides and Laurel Canyon hillside streets, the situation changes. These lots get more winter shade and damp than the open valley floor, which can swell wood doors seasonally. A swollen door can make a high-tolerance deadbolt bind or refuse to throw fully in winter, then work fine in the dry summer. We account for that when we fit the bolt and set the strike, and we tell you honestly if a door should be planed or adjusted first. Hillside houses off Laurel Canyon Boulevard also tend to have gates and entry systems, and if you want electronic access alongside a restricted-key cylinder, we can discuss smart lock installation as a complement, not a replacement.
In the 91604 and 91602 ZIP codes, apartments and condos cluster north of the boulevard along Moorpark Street and Ventura Place. Residents there usually control only their own unit door, and a restricted-key deadbolt is a sensible upgrade for that one entry. Check your lease or HOA rules before swapping anything, because some buildings require a key held by management.

Call (213) 577-1366Are high security locks worth it for Ventura Boulevard shops and restaurants?
For many businesses, yes, and for a specific reason: key control. A shop or restaurant has employees who come and go, and keys get copied, lost, and forgotten in drawers. With a restricted keyway, copies need authorization, so you know who holds access. That is as valuable as the pick resistance itself.
Commercial doors differ from residential ones. Back doors, storage rooms, and office doors may need different grades of hardware, and a front door may be a glass storefront door with narrow stile hardware that limits what fits. If your door is damaged or the hardware is failing, our storefront lock repair service covers that side, and we can fit a high security cylinder as part of the fix.
If you want several doors, or several tenants or employees, to work under a structured arrangement of keys, a master key system can be built on high security cylinders. It takes planning, because every added level of access adds a point where a key can leak. We walk through the tradeoffs with you instead of selling the most complex setup. Commercial security locks and home security locks share a lot of technology, but how you manage keys is different, and we treat them differently.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for high security locks?
We have been in business since 1987, and over that time the same lesson has held: the lock matters less than how it is fitted and how the keys are managed. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and we handle it as one company, not a dispatch service that sends your call to whoever is nearest.
We operate from a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and send mobile vans across 140 cities in Los Angeles and Ventura counties. Studio City is about 11 miles from our base, and our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock, every day of the year.
One thing to ask any locksmith, including us: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask to see it, and check it with the state if you want to confirm. It is a reasonable question and a good company will not mind it.
We also tell you when you do not need what you called about. If a lock rekey solves your problem, we say so. If your door needs a proper deadbolt installation before a premium cylinder makes sense, we say that too. If you are locked out in the middle of the night and the real issue is access first, you can reach our emergency locksmith service and handle the upgrade later.

Call (213) 577-1366What should you ask before buying a high security lock?
Whoever you hire, a few questions will protect you. Ask what makes the cylinder pick-resistant and bump-resistant, in plain terms, not just a brand name. Ask whether the keyway is restricted and who can authorize more keys. Ask whether the door and strike will be checked and reinforced. And ask what happens if you lose all your keys, because with controlled blanks, replacement may need proof of ownership and some lead time.
That last point surprises people. Restricted keys are harder to copy by design, so you should plan ahead. Once the lock is installed, have the key you need made right away through our key duplication service, with the authorization the system requires, rather than waiting until you are down to one key.
Keep a record of which keys exist and who has them. A high security cylinder only delivers its benefit if you manage the keys with the same care you put into buying it.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a pick-resistant lock and a bump-resistant lock?
Pick resistance is about frustrating someone who is manipulating the pins one at a time, usually with security pins and tight machining. Bump resistance is about stopping a bump key from jolting the pins out of the way. Many high security cylinders are designed to do both, but the design features differ, so ask what a specific cylinder is built to resist.
Are high security locks pick-proof or bump-proof?
No. Any lock can be defeated with enough time, skill, or force. High security locks raise the skill and time required and reduce the odds of a quick, quiet attack. The door, frame, and strike plate matter as much as the cylinder, so we inspect all of them.
Can you put a high security cylinder in my vintage mortise lock in Colfax Meadows?
Often, yes, because mortise locks use a separate cylinder. It depends on the condition of the lock body and the cylinder type it takes, so we confirm in person. If the mortise body is worn out, we may suggest repair first so the new cylinder has a sound mechanism behind it.
Do I have to replace the whole lock, or can you just upgrade the cylinder?
If your existing deadbolt body is sound and properly fitted, upgrading the cylinder and strike is usually the lighter-cost option. If the body is worn, loose, or not suited to the door, replacing the whole lock is usually the more economical route over time. We tell you which applies after looking at the door.
What are restricted keys, and why do they matter?
Restricted keys use blanks and keyways that are controlled, so copies cannot be cut casually at a kiosk. That lets you know how many keys exist and who authorized them. The tradeoff is that replacements need authorization and sometimes more lead time, so keep your keys accounted for.
Will my wood door swell and cause problems with a tight-tolerance deadbolt?
It can, especially on shaded hillside lots in the canyons where winter damp swells wood doors seasonally. We check the fit and set the strike with that in mind, and we tell you if the door should be adjusted first. A lock should work through the seasons, not only in dry summer weather.
Can you install high security locks for my business along Ventura Boulevard?
Yes. We fit high security cylinders on commercial doors and can set up controlled key systems for shops, restaurants, and offices. Door type matters, since glass storefront doors limit what hardware fits, so we look at each door before recommending anything.
Is a high security lock the same as a smart lock?
No. A high security lock is about the mechanical cylinder and key control. A smart lock is about electronic access. Some homeowners use both, a restricted-key cylinder with a keypad or app, and we can discuss what makes sense for your door.
How do I know a locksmith is legitimate before they work on my locks?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work begins. You can also call us at (213) 577-1366 with questions about how we work, and a person answers at any hour.
