What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Studio City usually need?
Most Mercedes calls from Studio City fall into a few groups: a key that stopped working, a fob with a dead battery, a spare that was never made, and a lost key with nothing left to copy. What changes the answer is not the street. It is the year and model of the car, because that decides whether a specialist locksmith can do the job at all.
Where the problem happens still shapes how we plan the visit. Someone in an apartment building along Moorpark Street may be standing in a shared lot with one worn key and a car that will not start. Someone working near Radford Studio Center may find at the end of the day that the fob has gone dead. A hillside driveway off Laurel Canyon Boulevard is a different setup again. We ask where the car is and what it is doing, then work from there. If you are locked out rather than keyless, our car lockout service in Studio City is the quicker route.
- A spare or second SmartKey made before the only one is lost
- A replacement for a worn SmartKey that no longer syncs with the car
- A key that is not recognized or will not turn in the ignition
- A dead fob battery, or a 'key not detected' message on Keyless-Go cars
- A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
- All keys lost
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
Mobile service means the work happens where the car sits. For a Mercedes that will not start or has no key left, that is often the only practical option, since towing a car you cannot unlock or start is its own problem. Here is how a call runs.
- You call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered around the clock. We ask the model, the year, how many working keys you have, and what the car does when you try the key.
- We narrow down which key system the car uses. For late-production cars where the data is not clear-cut, we confirm by VIN instead of assuming.
- We tell you plainly whether this is a job we can do at your car or one that has to go through Mercedes. If it is dealer-only, we say so before anyone drives out.
- For serviceable cars, we ask you to show the car is yours, then connect professional equipment to the electronic ignition module over infrared or the OBD port and read it.
- We generate and program the new key. On certain chassis, an all-keys-lost job also needs a steering-lock emulator, and we bring that to the job when the car calls for it.
- We test the result: starting the car, locking and unlocking, the remote buttons, and the emergency blade. Then we explain what you have and how many keys now work.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key do you have? Key eras in plain terms
Every Mercedes we deal with uses an electronic SmartKey, not a conventional transponder key. That is the first thing to understand. There is no simple clone-able chip of the kind found in some other brands. What matters is which generation of the system your car uses.
From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used the system known as DAS3/FBS3. The key is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that slides into the electronic ignition (called the EIS or EZS) and twists. The key and the car trade rolling codes over infrared.
Mercedes then moved to FBS4 on a model-by-model schedule, not all at once. FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
- Facelifted W212 E-Class: FBS4 from April 2013 production
- CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156): FBS4 from November 2014
- 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213): FBS4 from launch
- Most W166 ML and GLE models stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4
What can a specialist do on an FBS3 car?
FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 through 2014 plus most W166 ML and GLE models confirmed as FBS3 by VIN, are fully serviceable by a specialist locksmith. Professional tools in the class of Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and Autel IM-series equipment can read the EIS or EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate new keys. That includes all-keys-lost situations.
One wrinkle: W204 C-Class, W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator for the all-keys-lost process. It is a known requirement, not a surprise, and it is one reason we ask for the exact model and year when you call.
Because the W166 can fall on either side of the line, we do not quote a late ML or GLE on a hunch. We check the VIN, then tell you which route applies.
What if you have lost every Mercedes key?
Honestly, an all-keys-lost Mercedes is the most involved call we take, and the outcome depends entirely on the key system.
On an FBS3 car, we can usually handle it at your location. The process reads the ignition module, calculates the password, and creates a new key from scratch. If the car is one of the chassis that needs the steering-lock emulator, that adds work to the visit.
On an FBS4 car, it is effectively a dealer job. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin also requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait and plan for it, including how you will get the car to the dealer. Limited specialist capability on FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something we would tell you to count on.
If you are not sure which situation you are in, our page on lost car key replacement in Studio City walks through the general process, and a call with your VIN settles the Mercedes-specific part.

Call (213) 577-1366Is it really the key? Ignition and steering-lock problems
Not every Mercedes that will not start has a bad key. Before replacing anything, it is worth separating a key problem from a car problem, because the wrong guess means paying for a key that was never at fault.
The classic example is the electronic steering lock. On the W204 C-Class and on W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, the ESL/ELV motor can fail. The dash wakes up, the car acknowledges the key, but the key will not turn, which looks exactly like a worn key. A new key will not fix it.
Other common causes we see listed for these cars:
- A failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition, so the key is not recognized or will not turn
- SmartKeys that wear out after years of daily use and stop syncing
- A dead fob battery. Remote buttons usually fail first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, or a snapped emergency blade, which are often repairable without a full new key
- On FBS4 cars, a lost key that turns into a VIN-coded dealer order
What affects the cost of a Mercedes key in Studio City?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because honest Mercedes pricing depends on facts we only learn from the car. These are the things that move the cost:
- Key system: FBS3 work can be done by a specialist; FBS4 goes through Mercedes, with its own ordering cost and timeline
- Whether you have a working key: copying from one is a lighter-cost job than all keys lost
- The chassis: W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars may need a steering-lock emulator in an all-keys-lost job
- Whether the fault is really the key, the fob battery, a cracked shell, or the ignition or steering-lock hardware
- Which key type the car uses and how many keys you want made
- Time and place: an after-hours call or a hard-to-reach spot takes more of our time
- Proof of ownership and VIN checks, which are required work, not extras
Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: a fair comparison
Neither is always right. For an FBS3 Mercedes, a specialist locksmith can do the whole job, including all-keys-lost, and does it at your car, so there is no tow and no waiting on a shop schedule. That is usually the more economical route, and it is certainly the more convenient one.
For an FBS4 Mercedes, the dealer is the realistic path. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN with proof of ownership, and the car has to be registered in Xentry before a key is enabled. We will not pretend otherwise or take your call just to string you along. What we can do is tell you quickly that it is a dealer job, so you are not losing a day finding that out.
One more fair point: Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process, not the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands. That is part of why FBS4 stays with the dealer.
Either way, ask any locksmith for their BSIS LCO license number. California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and a legitimate company will not hesitate to give it.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Mercedes?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans that cover 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who passes your job to whoever answers.
David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. That matters on Mercedes cars especially, where the right call is sometimes 'this is FBS4, go to the dealer' and sometimes 'this is the steering lock, not your key.' Those honest answers are a big part of the service.
For related jobs, we also cover key fob replacement in Studio City, and you can see how we approach the brand overall on our Mercedes-Benz key page.
Mercedes key service across Studio City, from Colfax Meadows to Coldwater Canyon
Studio City is a mix. Colfax Meadows, Tujunga Village, and the Silver Triangle hold 1920s to 1940s character homes. Canyon streets south of Ventura Boulevard have mid-century and newer hillside houses, and apartments and condos cluster north of the boulevard near Moorpark Street and Ventura Place. A Mercedes key problem can turn up in any of them: a driveway in Woodbridge Park, a hillside street off Laurel Canyon Boulevard, near the Fryman Canyon hillsides, along the Coldwater Canyon corridor, or on the Ventura Boulevard corridor in a shop or restaurant lot.
We work in ZIP codes 91604 and 91602. Our Westwood storefront is about 11 miles from Studio City, and our vans come to you instead of asking you to bring the car in. We do not state arrival times because traffic, the time of day, and what else is on the schedule all change them, but we will give you an honest estimate when you call.
The same company also handles house locks in the area. Many older Colfax Meadows homes still have vintage mortise locksets, and canyon and hillside lots get more winter shade and damp, which can swell wood doors seasonally. If your car key and your house key are both on the list, mention it on the call. You can browse the full Studio City locksmith services or car key replacement in Studio City, or contact us directly.

Frequently asked questions
Can you replace a Mercedes key at my location in Studio City?
For FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most W166 ML and GLE models confirmed by VIN, yes. We come to your car and program the key there. For FBS4 cars, the work generally goes through Mercedes, and we say so on the first call.
How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Year and model give a strong hint. Facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013, CLA and GLA from November 2014, and new platforms like the W222, W205, X253, and W213 from launch are FBS4. Late W166 cars are not clear-cut, so we confirm by VIN.
Can you make a Mercedes key if I have lost all of them?
On FBS3 cars, yes. We read the ignition module and generate a new key, using a steering-lock emulator on W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis. On FBS4 cars, it is a dealer order, pre-coded to the VIN with proof of ownership, and it takes multiple days.
Why would a dealer need proof of ownership?
Mercedes orders FBS4 keys pre-coded to the VIN and requires proof of ownership. Its service bulletin also requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled.
My Mercedes key will not turn but the dashboard lights up. Is the key bad?
Not necessarily. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor produces exactly that symptom. We check that before suggesting a new key.
Is a dead fob battery worth checking first?
Yes. On Keyless-Go cars, remote buttons often die first and then the car reports 'key not detected.' A battery is the lighter-cost fix, so it is worth ruling out before replacing the key.
Can a cracked Chrome-key shell or broken blade be fixed?
Often, yes. Cracked shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades are common issues and do not always call for a whole new key. We look at it and tell you which route makes sense.
How do I check that a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number before work begins. Also ask whether they actually handle your Mercedes' key system, since FBS4 is a dealer matter.
Do you answer calls at night and on weekends?
Yes. (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, by our own company.
