What does it mean to rekey locks?
Rekeying is the lighter-touch way to take back control of who can open your doors. Inside every pin-tumbler lock is a cylinder with small pins that line up only when the right key is inserted. When we rekey, we take that cylinder apart, change the pins to match a new key, and put it back. The lock itself, the deadbolt, the handle, the finish on the door all stay exactly as they are. The difference is that every key that used to work is now just a piece of brass.
That is why people search for rekey locks near me when they have just bought a house, finished with a tenant, or lost a ring of keys. They do not necessarily want new hardware. They want the old keys to stop mattering. In Stevenson Ranch, where most homes are tract houses with builder-installed locks that still work fine, rekeying is often the sensible answer.
This page covers house rekey, home lock rekey, apartment lock rekey and commercial rekey for Stevenson Ranch and the 91381 ZIP code. If what you really need is different hardware, we will say so and point you to the right service instead of selling you the wrong one.
When does it make sense to rekey your locks?
The reasons are usually ordinary. Nobody has done anything wrong; you just cannot know how many copies of a key exist or where they are. A few situations come up again and again.
- Rekey locks after moving: you do not know who the previous occupants gave keys to, including relatives, cleaners, contractors and neighbors.
- Rekey locks after buying a house: the sale hands you a set of keys, but not a list of everyone who has had one. Doing it before you settle in is the cleanest start.
- Rekey locks after a tenant moves out: tenant turnover rekey is standard practice for landlords because a returned key does not prove no copy was made.
- Rekey locks after losing keys: if the keys went missing with an address attached, or you simply do not know where they fell, changing the lock removes the worry.
- After a separation, a roommate leaving, or ending a relationship with a house sitter, nanny or contractor who held a key.
- When you want every door on one key. Rekey all house locks so the front door, back door, garage entry and side gate lock work with a single key instead of a jangling ring.

Call (213) 577-1366How we rekey a house or apartment, step by step
Rekeying is a hands-on job, and the order matters. This is how a typical visit goes from our mobile van.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what happened: a move, a sale, a tenant, lost keys. We ask how many exterior locks there are, whether any are electronic, and whether any are sticking or damaged.
- We come to the address in a mobile van carrying the pins, key blanks and tools needed to work on common residential locks on site.
- We look at each lock before touching it. A lock that is worn, bent, or misaligned in its door may be better repaired or replaced, and we tell you that before starting.
- We remove the cylinders, take out the old pin configuration and set the new one to match your new key.
- We reassemble each lock, then test the new key repeatedly, and confirm the old key no longer turns the cylinder.
- If you want all the locks on one key, we set them to match. If you want separate keys for separate doors, we set it up that way.
- We hand over your new keys, and you can order extra copies. Anything you need beyond that, such as spare keys, is a separate conversation.
Rekey or replace: which is the better call?
Rekeying is usually the more economical route when the hardware is in good shape and you like how it looks. You keep the same handles, the same finish and the same deadbolts. The door does not need to be touched.
Replacement makes more sense in a handful of cases. If a lock is physically worn out, if the latch drags or the bolt does not fully throw, a new key will not fix that. If you want a different level of security, a different style, or electronic access, rekeying is the wrong tool. In those cases we would walk you through changing the locks or full lock replacement and explain what each involves.
One other point: rekeying does not make a lock more pick-resistant or more secure than it was. It resets who holds a working key. If your concern is the lock quality itself, say so and we will talk through options. If your concern is who has a key, rekeying addresses exactly that.
What affects the cost of a lock rekey?
We do not quote a number on a web page because the honest answer depends on the job. Here is what moves it up or down.
- How many locks need rekeying. Each cylinder is handled separately, so one deadbolt is a smaller job than every exterior door, the garage entry and a side gate.
- Whether the locks are in good condition. A lock that works smoothly is straightforward. One that is gummed up, corroded or damaged may need repair work in addition to rekeying.
- Whether you want all locks on one key or separate keys, and how many copies you need.
- The type of lock. Standard residential cylinders are the easy case. Higher-security or specialty locks can involve different parts and different handling.
- Residential versus commercial. A business with many doors, or with a master key arrangement, is a different scope from a single-family home.
- Timing and distance. After-hours calls and the drive to the address are part of the picture, and we will explain them when you call rather than after the work.

Call (213) 577-1366Rekeying in Stevenson Ranch: what we see locally
Stevenson Ranch is a master-planned community of 1990s and 2000s subdivisions on the west side of I-5, and nearly all of it is single-family tract housing under HOA rules. That shapes the rekey work we get. When homes change hands in Southern Oaks and The Palisades, new owners often call us for rekeying right after closing, because the original builder-installed hardware is still solid and there is no reason to rip it out. A rekey changes who can get in without changing how the front of the house looks, which also means you are not altering exterior hardware that your HOA may have views on. If you are unsure, check your HOA rules before any hardware change.
Many neighborhoods here, including Diamond Head, Treana, Marblehead, Bellagio and Toscana, share the same pattern: a front door deadbolt, a handle set, a garage entry door, a back slider or patio door, and often a side-gate lock. The door hardware is largely builder stock from the 1990s through the 2010s, so it varies in age. Some of it is barely worn. Some has years of heat cycling behind it.
The climate matters more than people expect. Summers in the Santa Clarita Valley are hot and dry, and winds funnel through Pico and Towsley canyons. Heat can make doors expand and bind, and dust works its way into exterior locks. A dusty, stiff cylinder is easier to assess when it is open on the bench during a rekey, and we will tell you if one has reached the point of needing attention. Hillside homes that back onto open space, and homes along the Pico Canyon Road corridor, tend to see this wind and dust exposure at the garage and side-gate locks too.
Southern Oaks and similar gated enclaves south of Pico Canyon Road add one thing to keep in mind: a community gate code or HOA access card is separate from your door locks. Rekeying your house will not change community access, and that is handled by your HOA or management. We work on the locks on your property, from the 91381 ZIP code across the valley side of the community.
Stevenson Ranch is about 32 miles from our Westwood storefront, which is why we work from mobile vans here rather than asking you to bring locks to us. If a single lock is the only issue, such as a back door that sticks after a hot week, mention it when you call and we will say whether rekeying, repair or something else fits.

Call (213) 577-1366What about commercial and business lock rekeys?
Rekeying is just as useful for a business. A commercial lock rekey after an employee leaves, after a manager departs, or after keys go missing restores control without replacing every door. Business lock rekey work is the same principle as residential, but it often involves more doors, different hardware and sometimes a key hierarchy.
If you run a shop at Valencia Marketplace on The Old Road, for example, the storefront door, back door and any office or storage doors may all be candidates. If the front lock is the problem rather than the keys, our storefront lock repair page covers that side of the work.
For offices or multi-door sites where some staff should open some doors and not others, a master key system is worth discussing. Rekeying and master keying can be planned together so you do not pay for the same visit twice. We will explain what your building actually needs.
Landlords, property managers and short-term rentals
Tenant turnover rekey is probably the most common repeat request from owners. Each time a tenant leaves, rekeying means the previous tenant's keys, and any copies, no longer open the door. Landlords with several properties often want a consistent process, and our landlord locksmith page lays out how that can work.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Stevenson Ranch among them. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, so the work is done by our own people, not passed along through a dispatch middleman. When you call (213) 577-1366, the line is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
David is the owner and lead technician, and he oversees how we do our work. That matters on a rekey because the job looks simple, but small things, like a worn pin or a misaligned strike plate, are what separate a clean job from a callback.
Our mobile locksmith service means we come to you with the tools for the job. We will be straight about whether rekeying is the right answer, and if it is not, we will say so.
What should you ask any locksmith before they start?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith about it before they work on your locks. Ask for the license number, ask how the price will be determined, and ask whether the same company that answered the phone is the one coming to your door. A reputable company will answer all three directly.
Also ask what they plan to do before they do it. A good technician will tell you whether your locks can be rekeyed, which ones, and what each step involves. If you want to add electronic access later, our smart lock installation page explains that separate path.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between rekeying and changing locks?
Rekeying changes the pins inside your existing lock so a new key works and old keys do not. Changing locks means removing the hardware and installing new locks. Rekeying keeps your handles and deadbolts; changing them gives you different hardware. If you are not sure which fits, call (213) 577-1366 and describe what you have.
Should I rekey my locks after buying a house in Stevenson Ranch?
It is a good idea. You cannot know how many keys were made over the years or who holds them. Rekeying the exterior locks before you move in means only the keys you hold will work. It is a common step for new owners in neighborhoods like Southern Oaks and The Palisades.
Can you rekey all the locks in my house to one key?
Usually yes. We can set the front door, back door, garage entry and similar locks to match a single key, as long as the locks are compatible and in working condition. If a lock is a different type or damaged, we will tell you whether it can be matched or needs another approach.
Do I need to rekey after a tenant moves out?
We recommend it. A returned key does not tell you whether a copy was made. Rekeying between tenants is the standard way to make sure only the current occupant has working keys. Landlords with multiple units often set up a routine for it.
Can you rekey a lock if I lost the only key?
Often, yes. We can work on the lock, determine what is needed, and set it to a new key. If the lock is damaged, we will tell you whether it needs repair or replacement. If you are locked out as well, see our house lockout page.
Will rekeying change my HOA gate code or access card?
No. Rekeying only affects the locks we work on at your property. Community gates, guard access and HOA cards are controlled by your association or management company. If you are unsure about HOA rules on exterior hardware, check with them first.
Can any lock be rekeyed?
Most standard residential pin-tumbler locks can be. Some are worn out, broken, or built in a way that makes rekeying impractical. Certain specialty or high-security locks also have their own requirements. We look at each lock first and tell you honestly what will and will not work.
Do you rekey commercial locks too?
Yes. Commercial rekey work covers shops, offices and other businesses. It is useful after staff changes or lost keys. For larger buildings, we can also talk about key hierarchies. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us how many doors and what kind of hardware you have.
Is there a phone line I can call at night?
Yes. Our phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. For non-urgent jobs you can also reach us through our contact page, but if keys are lost and you are worried about security tonight, calling is faster.
