Mercedes-Benz key replacement in South Gate

Wilshire Lock & Key sends mobile service to South Gate for Mercedes-Benz keys, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Older SmartKey cars (roughly 2000-2014) we can usually program or replace at the curb, even with all keys lost. Newer FBS4 cars are effectively dealer-only, and we say so up front. What do Mercedes-Benz owners in South Gate usually need?

The Mercedes-Benz key problems we get asked about fall into a few groups: a key that is lost, a SmartKey that stopped syncing after years of daily use, a fob with dead buttons or a dead battery, a cracked Chrome-key shell or snapped emergency blade, and a car that will not start because the ignition will not take the key. Before anything else, we need to know which key system your car has. That decides whether a locksmith can finish the job at the curb or whether it has to go through Mercedes.

South Gate grew quickly from the 1920s through the 1940s around nearby industry, and much of the city is small bungalows and early post-war homes, often with a rear unit or a converted garage sharing the lot. Renters occupy a large share of the housing, and small apartment buildings line Long Beach Boulevard. That shapes where car-key trouble actually happens. When a garage has become living space, the car lives in a driveway, on a shared lot, or at the curb. A lost key, a fob left inside, or a key that quit working is a curbside problem, not a garage problem.

Lockouts tend to happen right where people park: in front of an apartment building along Long Beach Boulevard, in a lot near the Tweedy Mile shops, or in a driveway shared with a rear rental unit when the fob is sitting on the kitchen counter. If you are only locked out and the key still exists, read about car lockout service in South Gate. This page is about getting a Mercedes key made or replaced.

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 17 miles from South Gate, and the mobile vans do the driving. You do not tow the car anywhere for the work we can do. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered around the clock, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the year, and whether you still have any working key.
  2. We work out which key system your car uses. For years in a transition zone, we confirm by VIN instead of guessing.
  3. If it is a car we can service, a van comes to you in South Gate. If it is a car that has to go through the dealer, we tell you that on the phone so you do not pay for a trip that cannot solve the problem.
  4. At the car, we ask for ID and proof of ownership. A reputable shop does this for any key, and Mercedes requires it for its own orders too.
  5. We read the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) over infrared or the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate the new key with professional tools.
  6. We test the key before we call it done: starting the car, locking and unlocking, and the remote buttons. If you have no spare, we recommend making one while the tools are already connected.

Which Mercedes key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes we deal with uses an electronic SmartKey, not a conventional transponder key. That is the first thing to understand, because the old habit of cloning a chip does not apply here.

From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used the system known as DAS3/FBS3. The key is either the familiar infrared Chrome key or a black SmartKey. It slides into the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) and twists. The key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared, so there is no clone-able chip in the way many other brands work.

Mercedes then moved to a newer system, FBS4, on a model-by-model schedule. The facelifted W212 E-Class changed from April 2013 production. The CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) changed from November 2014. Newer platforms started on FBS4 from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), the 2015 C-Class (W205), the 2016 GLC (X253), and the 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and the keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

Some cars sit in a gray zone. Most W166 ML/GLE models stayed on FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So for a late ML or GLE, we do not assume. We confirm by VIN. Push-button start points toward FBS4 but is not proof on its own, which is another reason we check the VIN.

What if I have lost every key to my Mercedes?

The answer depends entirely on the system in your car.

On an FBS3 car (roughly 2000-2014, plus most GLE/W166 models through 2019 when the VIN confirms FBS3), all-keys-lost is something a specialist locksmith can handle. The professional tools we use, from the Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and Autel IM families, read the ignition module, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis, a steering-lock emulator (ESL/ELV) is also needed as part of the job. That is an extra piece of equipment and extra work, and it is one of the reasons those jobs differ from others.

On an FBS4 car, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, we will be direct: added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only. Keys are ordered from Mercedes pre-coded to your VIN, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in its Xentry Diagnostics system before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait and plan around it. Limited specialist capability on FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something to count on, and we will not tell you otherwise to win a call.

If you are in this spot right now, our page on lost car key replacement in South Gate covers the general process, and the notes above cover the Mercedes specifics.

Is the key really the problem?

Not always, and it is worth ruling out before paying for a new key. Two Mercedes failures look like a bad key but are not:

The first is a worn or failed EIS/EZS electronic ignition. The car does not recognize the key, or the key will not turn. The second is an electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor failure, which is a known issue on the W204 C-Class and on the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class. The dash wakes up, everything seems alive, and the key still will not turn. A new key does nothing for either problem, so diagnosing first saves money.

South Gate helps in one small way here. It is a flat inland plain with weak marine influence, and salt-air corrosion is not a practical concern. So when a key or ignition is failing on a South Gate car, the cause is much more likely years of daily use than weather.

Fobs are a separate, simpler category. Remote buttons usually die first, and on Keyless-Go cars a weak battery produces a 'key not detected' message. Worn buttons, cracked Chrome-key shells, and broken emergency blades are common as well. For those, see our key fob replacement in South Gate page.

  • Key will not turn, dash is alive: possible ESL/ELV motor failure on W204, W207, or pre-facelift W212
  • Key not recognized at all: possible EIS/EZS wear or failure
  • Remote buttons dead, then 'key not detected': start with the fob battery
  • SmartKey stopped syncing after years of use: the key itself may be worn out

How much does Mercedes-Benz key replacement cost in South Gate?

We do not publish a flat figure for Mercedes keys, because the range between two Mercedes jobs can be wide. What moves the cost is specific, and we can tell you most of it on the phone:

  • Key system: FBS3 work can be done by a specialist; FBS4 goes through Mercedes, and its pricing is set by the dealer, not us.
  • Whether you have a working key: adding a spare is a simpler job than all-keys-lost.
  • Chassis: W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars need an ESL/ELV emulator for all-keys-lost, which adds equipment and labor.
  • Key type: a Chrome key, a black SmartKey, and a fob with a new shell are different parts.
  • Whether the key is the real problem: a failed EIS/EZS or steering-lock motor is a repair, not a key job.
  • Verification: ownership and VIN checks are part of every job and are not optional.
  • The trip itself: we come to you in South Gate, so the mobile service is a factor in the overall quote.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: what is the fair comparison?

For an FBS3 Mercedes, a specialist locksmith is often the more economical route and the more convenient one. We come to you, so the car does not have to be towed or driven in, and we can work the same day the call comes in if the parts and tools line up. We do not promise a timeline, but we do not need a dealer appointment either.

For an FBS4 Mercedes, the dealer is the right path for a replacement or added key. The key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN, you show proof of ownership, and the car has to be registered in Xentry. We would rather send you there honestly than take a trip we cannot finish. If it helps, we can still talk through what to bring and what to ask for.

In between, there are cars where the answer depends on the VIN. If you are not sure which side you are on, a quick call sorts it out. Our general overview of car key replacement in South Gate explains the other brands, and our Mercedes-Benz key guide goes deeper on the models.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes key?

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans. We are one company, not a call center passing your job to whoever is nearby. When you phone (213) 577-1366, the work stays with us. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we handle these jobs.

One more thing worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith you call for their license number before they touch your car, and check it with the state.

Mercedes-Benz key help around South Gate

South Gate is a city of one ZIP code, 90280, and the practical map is simple. Along the Long Beach Boulevard, Firestone Boulevard, and Atlantic Avenue corridors, cars park outside small apartment buildings and storefronts, and that is where lockouts and lost keys cluster. In the Tweedy Mile commercial district, the car is often a work vehicle parked near the shop. Around the Civic Center area and South Gate Park, street parking is common. In Hollydale, in the southeast near Hollydale Regional Park, the small-home feel means driveways and lots shared with rear units.

Give us the cross street or a nearby landmark, such as the Azalea Regional Shopping Center, South Gate Park, or the East Los Angeles College South Gate Educational Center. In the industrial northwest along the LA River, a business address or gate entrance helps the van find you.

With mild winters and warm summers, South Gate's climate rarely plays a role in car-key failures. Summer heat only modestly swells older wood doors, which matters for house doors rather than Mercedes keys. If you also need a lock rekeyed at a duplex or rear rental unit, ask when you call, and see our South Gate locksmith page for the full picture. You can also contact us online if you are not in a hurry.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Year and model give a good first guess: FBS3 covers roughly 2000-2014, and FBS4 starts around 2015 or earlier on some models. A key that slides into the dash and twists points to the older system, and push-button start points toward FBS4. Some cars, such as late W166 ML/GLE models, can go either way, so we confirm by VIN.

Can you make a new Mercedes key if I have lost all of them?

On FBS3 cars, yes. That is a job for specialist tools, and some chassis (W204, W207, pre-facelift W212) also need a steering-lock emulator. On FBS4 cars, it is effectively dealer-only: a VIN-coded key ordered through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and a multi-day wait.

Do you come out to South Gate at night or on weekends?

Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and we run mobile vans from our Westwood base. Call, tell us the car, and we will tell you plainly whether we can do the job or whether it has to go through the dealer.

Is there a clone-able chip in a Mercedes key?

Not in the sense that people expect from other brands. On the FBS3 system, the key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared, so a new key is generated through the car's ignition module rather than copied. FBS4 keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

What do I need to show to get a Mercedes key made?

Photo ID and proof of ownership, plus the VIN. We ask for these on every vehicle, and Mercedes requires them for its own dealer orders too.

My key will not turn but the dashboard lights up. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering-lock motor can look exactly like a bad key. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can do something similar. We diagnose before we make anything.

My fob buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Often it is just the battery. Remote buttons tend to go first, and Keyless-Go cars then report 'key not detected'. Worn buttons, cracked shells, and broken emergency blades are also common and fixable without a full replacement.

I have a GLE from around 2014 to 2019. Is it FBS3 or FBS4?

Most W166 ML/GLE models stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. We confirm by VIN rather than assume, and we will tell you which route applies before any work is done.

Do you service Hollydale and the Tweedy Mile area?

Yes. We serve all of South Gate, ZIP 90280, including Hollydale, the Tweedy Mile district, the Civic Center area, and the main boulevards. A cross street or landmark helps us find your car quickly.
