What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Sherman Oaks usually need?
Most Mercedes calls from Sherman Oaks land in one of a few buckets: a spare key that was never made, a key worn out after years of daily use, a fob that has stopped talking to the car, or a key that is simply gone. The make matters more than people expect, because a Mercedes does not work like a Honda or a Toyota. There is no simple transponder chip to copy. Every Mercedes we work from is built around an electronic SmartKey, and what can be done at the curb depends on which generation of that system your car has.
Where it happens locally is fairly predictable. Sherman Oaks is a place where people park in shared lots and buildings: around Westfield Fashion Square and the Sherman Oaks Galleria, along the Ventura Boulevard corridor, and at the condo and apartment buildings along Ventura, Sepulveda, and Riverside. Many of those are HOA-managed buildings from the 1960s to the 1980s. A key that fails in one of those places tends to fail at the worst moment, such as after a long day, with your hands full, when you have somewhere to be.
Up in the hillsides south of Ventura Boulevard, along the Mulholland corridor, the picture changes. Hillside homes often have gates, side-yard doors, and several entry points, and the car usually lives in a driveway or behind a gate. The problem there is more often a spare that was never copied, or a key that went missing during a move or after a sale. If you are rekeying the house after a purchase, it is a good time to think about the car keys too.
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
Our vans come to the car, wherever it is parked: a shopping-center lot, a street, a condo parking area, or your own driveway. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, roughly 8 miles from Sherman Oaks, and the phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered around the clock. Here is how a typical job goes.
- You call and tell us the model, the year, and whether you still have any working key. If you can read the VIN from the windshield corner or door jamb, that helps a lot, because on a Mercedes the VIN settles questions the model year cannot.
- We tell you plainly which system your car most likely has and whether curb work is realistic or the dealer is the only route. If it is the dealer route, we say so on the phone instead of sending a van for nothing.
- If curb work is realistic, the van comes to the car. We ask for ID and proof that the car is yours before we make a key.
- We connect to the electronic ignition over infrared or the OBD port, work out the key password, and generate the new key with specialist programming tools.
- We test everything: starting the car, locking and unlocking, and each remote button. You see it work before we finish.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key do you have? The key eras in plain terms
Mercedes has used two main systems in the cars we are talking about, known as FBS3 and FBS4. Knowing which one you have is the single biggest factor in what happens next. Our Mercedes-Benz key overview covers the brand generally. Here is the short version for a Sherman Oaks driver.
- Late 1990s to roughly 2014 (FBS3): the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that slides into the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) and twists. The key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared, so there is no chip to clone the way there is on some other brands. A specialist can still generate a new key, but it is a proper programming job.
- FBS4, rolled out model by model: the facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production, CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014, and then new platforms from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213).
- The GLE/ML (W166) is the awkward one. Most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists W166 cars from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. We do not assume with those. We confirm by VIN.
- FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
What if I have lost every Mercedes-Benz key?
All keys lost is the call that worries people most, and the honest answer splits in two.
On FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most W166 GLE/ML models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, an all-keys-lost job is something a specialist locksmith can do. The tools read the ignition module, calculate the key password online, and produce a new working key. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and the pre-facelift W212 E-Class, there is an extra step: the electronic steering lock has to be handled with an ESL/ELV emulator, so we want to know the chassis before we arrive. That kind of job takes longer than a simple spare, and it is better done in one visit with the right equipment on the van.
On FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, we say it plainly: a lost key is effectively a dealer job. Keys are ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the car to be registered as present in its Xentry Diagnostics system before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait. Some specialists are starting to develop limited FBS4 capability, but it is not something to count on, and we will not promise it.
If that is your situation, the most useful thing we can do is tell you early so you can start the dealer order and plan around the wait. Our page on lost car key replacement in Sherman Oaks covers the general process for other makes as well.

Call (213) 577-1366Is the key really the problem? Other Mercedes faults that look like one
A good share of the Mercedes key calls turn out to be something else, and it is worth knowing the list before you pay for a new key you may not need.
If the dash wakes up but the key will not turn, that can be the electronic steering lock motor, not the key. It is a known failure on the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, and it mimics a bad key almost perfectly. A failed or worn EIS/EZS ignition can also make a perfectly good key look dead because the car stops recognizing it.
- Worn SmartKeys can stop syncing after years of daily use, even when nothing is visibly broken.
- Dead fob batteries come first: the remote buttons stop working, and on Keyless-Go cars the dash eventually reports 'key not detected'. Try a fresh battery before anything else.
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and snapped emergency blades are cosmetic or mechanical, and often fixable without a full replacement. Our key fob replacement service in Sherman Oaks covers shell and button repair.
- If the key is locked inside the car, that is a car lockout call, not a key replacement.
What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key?
We do not quote numbers on a web page because the honest figure depends on facts we only learn from your car. Here is what actually moves the cost.
- Which system the car has. FBS3 work happens on our van; FBS4 keys are a VIN-coded order through Mercedes, and that cost is set by the dealer side, not by us.
- Spare versus all keys lost. Adding a key while you still have a working one is usually the more economical route. Losing every key means more steps and more time.
- Chassis-specific extras. A W204, W207, or pre-facelift W212 that needs an ESL/ELV emulator involves more equipment and labor than a car that does not.
- What type of key you need. A fresh battery or a new shell is a very different job from a full replacement key.
- When and where we come out. After-hours calls and distance can affect the total.
- Confirmation by VIN. A late W166 or a model near a changeover date may need extra checking before we know the right approach.
Dealer or locksmith for a Mercedes key? A fair comparison
Sometimes the dealer is the right answer, and we would rather say that than waste your time. On FBS4 cars the dealer is effectively the only dependable route today. They order the key coded to your VIN, handle the Xentry registration, and enable it in the car. You will need proof of ownership and patience for the multi-day wait.
On FBS3 cars the comparison is different. A specialist locksmith can generate keys on-site, including all-keys-lost situations, and the work can happen where the car is parked instead of requiring the car to be moved. For a driver who is stuck in a lot near the Galleria or at a condo building on Ventura Boulevard, that matters. For a spare you can schedule in advance, the lighter-cost option is often a locksmith appointment, but that depends on the car.
What we will not do is pretend. If you call about a 2016 GLC or a 2017 E-Class and ask whether we can make a key tonight, we will tell you that it is a dealer job and explain the order process. The same goes for any call where the VIN shows a different system than you expected.

Call (213) 577-1366Mercedes-Benz key help across Sherman Oaks neighborhoods and ZIP codes
We cover all of Sherman Oaks, including ZIP codes 91403, 91423, 91401, and 91411. The place you are stuck usually tells us what kind of day you are having.
Around Westfield Fashion Square, the Sherman Oaks Galleria district, and the Ventura Boulevard corridor, the calls come from parking lots and structures where the car has to be dealt with on the spot. The same goes for hospital and recreation-center parking near Sherman Oaks Hospital and the Van Nuys-Sherman Oaks Recreation Center, where a dead fob can leave you stuck after an appointment or a game. Along Magnolia Boulevard and Riverside Drive, a lot of the stock is condo and apartment buildings, and parking rules in an HOA-managed building can limit where a van can set up. Tell us when you call, and we will plan around it.
In Longridge Estates, Royal Woods, and Chandler Estates, and on the hillsides toward Mulholland, the car is more often at home. Hillside properties tend to have gates, side-yard doors, and multiple entry points, so a new owner may be changing house locks and gate hardware at the same time. If a car was part of a sale or a move, we can talk about its keys while we are there for the house. If your Mercedes stops responding on or near the I-405/US-101 interchange, get it to a safe place off the road first and then call us.
Valley summers are hot, with some relief near the Sepulveda Pass, and a key fob left in a parked car all day is rarely at its best. If your remote has been getting patchy, a battery is cheap insurance before a real failure. Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes key?
We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a real shop behind the van. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who passes the job to whoever is free. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One more practical point. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start on your car, us included. A Mercedes is not the car to hand to someone who is guessing.
If you are not sure what you have, start with the VIN and call. You can also reach us through our contact page, and if your car is a different make, our car keys hub lists the others.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key in Sherman Oaks if I have lost all of them?
It depends on the system. On FBS3 cars (roughly 2000 to 2014, plus most GLE/W166 models confirmed by VIN) a specialist can generate a new key on-site. On FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward, it is effectively a dealer order coded to your VIN, with proof of ownership and a multi-day wait.
How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Model year gives a good first guess, but not the final answer. Changeover dates vary by model, and a few cars, like some W166 GLE/ML, sit in a gray area. Give us the VIN when you call and we will confirm which system you have before anyone drives out.
Can you program a key for a 2015 or newer C-Class?
Usually not. The 2015 C-Class (W205) launched with FBS4, and FBS4 keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes. Limited specialist capability is emerging, but we would not tell you to count on it. We will explain the dealer route and what proof of ownership they will want.
My Mercedes dash lights up but the key will not turn. Do I need a new key?
Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, the electronic steering lock motor can fail and mimic a bad key. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can do something similar. We check before replacing a key that may be fine.
The remote buttons stopped working and the car says the key is not detected. What now?
Start with the fob battery. On Keyless-Go cars, a dying battery often kills the remote buttons first and then triggers a 'key not detected' message. If a new battery does not help, the key itself may be worn and out of sync, which we can look at.
Do I need to prove I own the car?
Yes. We ask for ID and proof of ownership before making a key, and the dealer does too when ordering a VIN-coded FBS4 key. It protects you as the owner, and it is a normal part of any responsible key job.
Can you come to a parking structure or lot instead of my home?
Yes, our vans go to the car. That includes shopping-center lots, streets, condo parking, and driveways in Sherman Oaks. If a building has parking rules or access limits, mention it when you call so we can plan how to set up.
What should I ask any locksmith before they work on my Mercedes?
Ask for their California BSIS LCO license, which the state requires of locksmith companies. Ask which key system your car has and whether they can really do that job. Ask how the total is figured before work starts. A straight answer to all three is a good sign.
