What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Redondo Beach usually need?
Mercedes-Benz key problems in Redondo Beach fall into a handful of familiar situations, and the right fix depends on which one you are in. Some people have lost the only key. Some have a SmartKey that has worn out after years of daily use and no longer syncs with the car. Some have a fob with a dead battery and a car that keeps reporting 'key not detected.' And some have a key that slides into the ignition but will not turn, which looks like a bad key and often is not.
That last one deserves a warning. On the W204 C-Class and on the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, the electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor can fail. The dashboard wakes up, the key seems perfectly fine, and the wheel will not release. A brand-new key will not fix that. So before we cut, program or sell you anything, we work out what has actually failed.
Here are the situations we see Mercedes owners describe, based on the known failure points of these cars:
- Lost the only key, or lost every key (all keys lost)
- A worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing after years of daily use
- A dead fob battery: remote buttons quit first, then Keyless-Go cars say the key is not detected
- A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
- A key that will not turn because of a worn or failed EIS/EZS electronic ignition
- A dash that lights up but a steering lock that will not release, which points to the ESL/ELV motor instead of the key
- A lockout, with the key inside the car or out of reach
Where does this actually happen in Redondo Beach?
Redondo Beach is a city of condos, townhomes and rentals, and that shapes where car trouble lands. A car that lives in a gated Brookside Village condo space, in the garage of a tall, narrow Golden Hills townhome, or along an apartment street off Artesia Blvd or PCH is a car whose owner is probably standing a short walk from the door when the key stops working. Other calls come from the shopping and waterfront side: Riviera Village, the area around the Redondo Beach Pier, and King Harbor, where a car gets parked for a dinner or a day at the water and the key does not come back with you.
We do not need you to be in a perfect spot. We bring the work to the car, wherever it is parked, and the first thing we do on the phone is sort out whether yours is a job we can finish at the curb.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 20 miles from Redondo Beach, and our mobile vans do the driving. The phone line at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. A service call for a Mercedes generally goes like this:
- Call us and tell us the model, the year, whether the car starts with a push button or with a key that twists into the dash, and how many working keys remain, if any.
- We place the car in the right key generation from the model and year. Where the year is a gray area, we confirm by VIN rather than guess.
- Before a van heads out, we tell you honestly whether this is something we can do at the car or something that has to be ordered through Mercedes.
- On arrival, we verify ownership. Expect to show registration and ID that match the vehicle.
- We diagnose first. We read the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port and check whether the real problem is the key, the ignition, or the steering lock.
- On the cars we can serve, we use professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites or Autel IM-series equipment to calculate the key password online and generate the new key. On W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis in an all-keys-lost situation, a steering-lock emulator is part of the job.
- We test the result: the key has to start the car, the remote functions have to work, and if you want a spare, we make sure it works too.
Which kind of Mercedes key do you have?
Every Mercedes-Benz in our reference data uses an electronic SmartKey of some kind, not a conventional transponder key. That is the single biggest difference between a Mercedes and a lot of other brands. There is no clone-able chip in the Toyota sense. Instead, the key and the car exchange rolling codes, and which system your car uses decides who can make you a new key.
The older generation is called DAS3/FBS3, and it runs from the late 1990s through roughly 2014. This is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. The key and car talk over infrared. Specialist locksmiths can work with these cars.
The newer generation is FBS4. Mercedes moved to it on a rolling, model-by-model schedule rather than all at once:
- Facelifted W212 E-Class: from April 2013 production
- CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156): from November 2014
- 2014 S-Class (W222): from launch
- 2015 C-Class (W205): from launch
- 2016 GLC (X253): from launch
- 2017 E-Class (W213): from launch
- W166 ML/GLE: most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin (S-B-80.57/62e) lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4

Call (213) 577-1366Why do some Mercedes years get confirmed by VIN?
Because the dates above overlap, you cannot always tell by looking at the model year. A late W166 is the clearest example: most are FBS3, but some can be FBS4, so we confirm that car by VIN instead of assuming. FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory. If you are not sure which one you have, give us the VIN when you call. It saves a trip when the answer turns out to be 'this one goes through the dealer.'
What if you have lost every Mercedes-Benz key?
All keys lost is the situation people dread, and with a Mercedes it splits cleanly in two.
On an FBS3 car, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most W166 GLE models through 2019 that are confirmed FBS3 by VIN, all keys lost is serviceable by a specialist locksmith. We read the EIS/EZS, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key. On W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis, the job also needs an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator. It takes more equipment and more work than adding a spare when you still have a working key, which is a cost factor we explain below.
On an FBS4 car, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, we say plainly that this is effectively dealer-only. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait, and plan around it. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but it is not something we would tell you to count on. Mercedes also handles key security through its own dealer authorization process rather than the NASTF/SDRM route that is familiar from domestic brands.
If your all-keys-lost car turns out to be FBS4, the useful thing we can do is tell you early, so you are not paying for a van visit that cannot solve the problem. If the car cannot be driven and needs to get to the dealer, that is something to sort out before you order. For related situations, see our page on lost car key replacement in Redondo Beach.
What affects the price of a Mercedes-Benz key in Redondo Beach?
We are not going to quote a number on a web page, because with Mercedes the number genuinely depends on the car. Here is what moves it:
- Key generation: FBS3 cars can be done by a specialist, while FBS4 cars run through a dealer order, which is a different cost structure altogether
- All keys lost versus adding a spare: with no working key, there is more work to do, and on W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis a steering-lock emulator is part of it
- Diagnosis: if the real fault is a failed EIS/EZS or ESL/ELV motor, you are paying for that repair, not just for a key
- The type of key: a basic Chrome key shell or battery is a smaller job than a full SmartKey generation or replacement
- How many keys you want made in the same visit
- Whether the VIN check turns up an unexpected FBS4 car, which changes the whole route
- The hour and the distance: a night or weekend call to Redondo Beach from our Westwood base is not the same job as a scheduled daytime one

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith: which is the fairer choice?
It depends on the car, and we would rather you hear that from us than discover it later.
For FBS4 Mercedes, the dealer is the realistic route. Mercedes controls the VIN-coded keys and the Xentry registration step. We will not pretend otherwise or take a deposit on a job we cannot finish.
For FBS3 Mercedes, a specialist locksmith is often the more convenient option and usually the more economical route, because we come to the car and do not have the vehicle moved. If the car is not drivable and there is no key, avoiding a tow can matter as much as anything else. Dealer service still makes sense for some owners, particularly if the car is already scheduled there for something else.
Whichever way you go, ask the same question of any locksmith: what is your BSIS LCO license number? California requires locksmith companies to hold that license, and any honest company will tell you the number before work starts.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so a car problem in Redondo Beach is ordinary territory. We run a real storefront plus mobile vans, and the people who answer your call work for the same company that sends the van. There is no dispatch middleman reselling your job to someone you have never heard of. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
The thing we try to do best on a Mercedes is be straight. If your car is FBS3 and fully serviceable, we say so and get to work. If it is FBS4 and the dealer is the real answer, we say that too. You can see our Mercedes-Benz key page for the broader picture, or the overview of car key replacement in Redondo Beach.
Mercedes keys around Redondo Beach: neighborhoods, ZIPs and salt air
We serve both Redondo Beach ZIP codes, 90277 and 90278, and the housing mix matters for how car calls actually happen. South Redondo combines 1950s and 1960s single-family homes, beach homes in The Avenues, and condo buildings near the pier and the Esplanade. The Hollywood Riviera carries Spanish and mid-century styles on hillside streets. North Redondo, in 90278, is known for dense two-on-a-lot townhome development, including the tall, narrow townhomes of Golden Hills. Brookside Village is a large gated condominium community, and older garden apartments line Artesia Blvd and PCH.
For a Mercedes owner, that means the car is often parked in a shared or tight space rather than a private driveway. A townhome lockout in Golden Hills or North Redondo, an apartment lockout along the Artesia Blvd or PCH corridors, or a call from a Brookside Village condo space all come down to the same job: we come to wherever the car is. If it is a lockout on a Mercedes and not a key problem, our car lockout service in Redondo Beach page covers that.
On the waterfront side, Riviera Village, King Harbor, the Redondo Beach Pier, South Bay Galleria and the green spaces such as Veterans Park, Seaside Lagoon and Dominguez Park are the sort of places where a key gets dropped, left behind or locked in a car. Wherever you are, the process above applies.
The climate also deserves a mention. Coastal exposure along the Esplanade, pier and King Harbor brings steady salt-air corrosion to exterior hardware, and inland North Redondo, though slightly more sheltered, still sits in the marine layer belt that keeps mornings damp much of the year. Our data does not single out SmartKeys as damaged by that air, so we will not claim it. But if you carry a cracked Chrome-key shell, a worn emergency blade or a fob that has started to act up, that is a reasonable time to replace it before it fails completely. If it is only the fob, see our page on key fob replacement in Redondo Beach, and for a wider view of the area, our Redondo Beach locksmith page lists everything we do locally.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a new Mercedes-Benz key at my car in Redondo Beach?
For FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most W166 GLE models through 2019 that are confirmed FBS3 by VIN, yes. Specialist tools can read the EIS/EZS and generate a new key, including when all keys are lost. For FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward, the realistic route is a dealer order, and we tell you that before sending a van.
How do I know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Model and year usually tell us, but the changeover varied by model: the facelifted W212 from April 2013 production, CLA and GLA from November 2014, and the W222, W205, X253 and W213 from launch. Some cars sit in a gray area, especially late W166 models, so we confirm by VIN. Give us the VIN when you call.
Is a Mercedes key a transponder chip that can be cloned?
Not in the way a Toyota key is. Older Mercedes SmartKeys, including the Chrome key, exchange rolling codes with the car over infrared, so there is no clone-able chip. A new key has to be generated through the car's electronic ignition, which is why the right tools and the right generation matter.
My Mercedes key goes in but will not turn. Is the key bad?
Maybe, but not always. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can cause it, and on the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class the electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor can fail, so the dash wakes up and the key will not turn. We diagnose first so you are not buying a key that will not fix the problem.
My fob buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?
Often not. Dead fob batteries are a common cause: the remote buttons go first, and then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected.' A battery is the first thing to check. If the key still will not sync, or the shell is cracked or the buttons are worn, replacement may be the answer.
How long does a dealer key order take for an FBS4 Mercedes?
Expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled. We would rather tell you that now than have you plan around a same-day fix that is not realistic.
Will you work on my W166 GLE or ML?
Most W166 cars stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, which a specialist can serve. But Mercedes' bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4, so we confirm each late car by VIN instead of assuming.
How do I check that a locksmith is legitimate?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the license number before work begins and check it is real. Also ask who is actually coming, and whether you will be told up front if your car needs the dealer.
Do you really answer the phone at night in Redondo Beach?
Yes. Our line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round. Our mobile vans cover Redondo Beach, including both ZIP codes, 90277 and 90278.
