What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Pomona typically need?
Most Mercedes calls from Pomona come down to a handful of situations, and they follow how people here live and park. Apartment buildings along the Holt and Garey corridors, housing near Western University of Health Sciences, and student housing near Cal Poly Pomona mean a lot of drivers share cars, hand keys around, or keep the only spare in a drawer across town. Fairplex event days put crowds in big lots, and a fob that slips out of a pocket or gets locked in a car is an ordinary end to a long day.
On the Mercedes side, the requests we see most often are these:
- One key left and the owner wants a spare before it also goes missing
- Every key lost, with the car parked at home, work, or a lot
- A SmartKey worn out from years of daily use that no longer syncs reliably
- A fob whose remote buttons have died, or a Keyless-Go car reporting 'key not detected'
- A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
- A key that will not turn even though the dashboard wakes up, which is often the car and not the key
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
We run mobile vans out of our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and Pomona is about 43 miles from that base. When you call (213) 577-1366, a person answers at any hour, every day of the year. The call is mostly about the car, because the car decides what is possible.
- Tell us the model, the approximate year, and whether the key is a metal-bladed key that twists in the ignition or a push-button car. Have the VIN ready, usually visible through the windshield at the driver's side dash.
- We tell you plainly which key system your car likely uses and whether it is something we can do at the car or something that has to go through Mercedes.
- If it is serviceable, a technician comes to wherever the car is parked, whether that is a driveway in Phillips Ranch, a street near downtown, or a lot at Fairplex.
- The technician confirms ownership, reads the electronic ignition over infrared or the OBD port, and has the key password calculated online.
- A new key is generated and programmed, then tested in the ignition and on the remote functions before we leave.
- If your car turns out to be a dealer-order car, we say so before any work starts, and we explain what to bring to the dealer.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key do you have? The key eras in plain terms
Every Mercedes in our data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. There is no simple chip to clone the way there is on some other brands. Two systems matter, and which one your car has determines nearly everything about your options.
FBS3 covers the late 1990s through roughly 2014. This is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that slides into the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) and twists. The key and car trade rolling codes over infrared. Specialist locksmiths can service these cars.
FBS4 arrived on a model-by-model schedule. The facelifted W212 E-Class moved over from April 2013 production, the CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014, and newer platforms came with it from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally use standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
There is a gray area. Most W166 ML/GLE models stayed on FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So we do not guess on those. We confirm by VIN.
What if you've lost every Mercedes key?
On an FBS3 car, losing all the keys is a solvable problem. Professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and Autel IM-series units read the EIS/EZS, the key password is calculated online, and a new key is generated. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and the pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a steering-lock emulator (ESL/ELV) is also needed, so those jobs involve extra equipment and extra work.
On an FBS4 car, the honest answer is different. Replacement or added keys are effectively dealer-only. The keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, and you need to show proof of ownership. Mercedes' own bulletin requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled, so expect a multi-day wait. Some specialists are developing limited FBS4 capability, but it is not something we would ask you to count on.
Either way, an all-keys-lost situation goes better when you have the title or registration, photo ID, and the VIN handy. If you are stuck at a car right now, our lost car key replacement service in Pomona page lays out the general process.
What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Pomona?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the same make can land in very different places. What moves the cost is specific and explainable:
- Key system: an FBS3 job done by a specialist is a different kind of job from an FBS4 order through the manufacturer
- All keys lost versus adding a spare: starting from zero keys takes more work than copying from a working one
- Chassis: the W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 need a steering-lock emulator, which adds equipment and labor
- The type of key or fob itself: a basic remote key is not the same part as a full SmartKey
- Whether the electronic ignition or steering lock has failed, since fixing that is a separate repair from making a key
- Where the car is and when: a van trip to Pomona at night is not the same as a daytime visit
- The dealer route: a VIN-coded order and a multi-day wait carry their own costs, including the tow if the car cannot be driven there

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or locksmith: which is the right call for your Mercedes?
Both have a place, and the right one depends on your car. If it is an FBS4 car, from roughly 2015 onward and earlier on some models, the dealer is where the key comes from. We would rather say that on the first call than take your time and then disappoint you. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process rather than the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands.
If your car is FBS3, a specialist can usually come to the car, which saves a tow and a trip. For a lighter-cost path on an older car, a mobile locksmith is usually the more economical route, because there is no tow and no separate ordering step. That is not true for every FBS3 car, though, so we confirm by VIN first.
If you are unsure, call us before you call a tow truck. Describing the car takes a short conversation, and it can save you a day. You can also read more on our Mercedes-Benz car key page.
Is it really the key? Common Mercedes problems that mimic a bad one
Plenty of people call for a new key when the key is fine. Before replacing anything, it is worth knowing what else causes the same symptoms:
- A failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition: the key is not recognized or will not turn
- A failed electronic steering lock motor on the W204 C-Class and the W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class: the dash wakes up but the key will not turn
- A dead fob battery: remote buttons stop first, and on Keyless-Go cars the dash eventually says the key is not detected
- A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade, which look serious but are often a cosmetic and mechanical fix
- A SmartKey that has simply worn out and stopped syncing after years of daily use
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Mercedes?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call, you reach us, not a dispatch company that sells your job to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith, including us, for that number before work begins. We would rather you ask than assume.
We also say no when no is the right answer. If your Mercedes is a dealer-only FBS4 car, we will tell you, point you to the right route, and not pretend otherwise. For a wider look at what we do, see our Pomona car key replacement page or the main Wilshire Lock & Key site.

Call (213) 577-1366Mercedes-Benz key service across Pomona
Pomona is a big, spread-out city, and where your car sits affects how we reach it. We serve all three ZIP codes, 91766, 91767, and 91768, from the neighborhoods near Downtown Pomona and the Arts Colony to Ganesha Hills, Phillips Ranch, Westmont, Spadra, North Pomona, and South Pomona.
Downtown, small businesses and the Arts Colony see their share of break-ins and lock replacements, and a car parked outside is another thing to protect. In the historic districts of Lincoln Park, Wilton Heights, and Hacienda Park, many owners of Victorian and craftsman homes park on the street or in older driveways. The 1980s planned community of Phillips Ranch sits in the southwestern hills, and the apartment buildings along Holt and Garey bring shared lots and shared keys.
Summers here are hot and dry, with periodic Santa Ana winds. A lockout in that heat is more than an inconvenience, so if you are locked out of a Mercedes and not dealing with a lost key, our Pomona car lockout service is a better fit. Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key at my car in Pomona?
For FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most W166 ML/GLE models through 2019 once confirmed by VIN, yes, a technician can generally do it where the car is parked. For FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, and we will say that when you call.
Are all Mercedes-Benz keys dealer-only?
No. Older cars on the FBS3 system are serviceable by specialist locksmiths, including all-keys-lost situations. FBS4 cars are the ones that have to go through Mercedes, because keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN with proof of ownership.
How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Model and year give a good first guess, but they are not always enough. Some models changed systems mid-production, and the W166 ML/GLE is the clearest example, so we confirm by VIN. Call (213) 577-1366 with the VIN and we'll tell you which applies.
Why won't my Mercedes key turn when the dashboard lights up?
It may not be the key. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering lock motor can wake the dash but keep the key from turning. A worn EIS/EZS ignition can cause a similar problem, so a diagnosis should come before a new key.
How long will an FBS4 key take if I have to go through the dealer?
Expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered coded to your VIN, you must show proof of ownership, and Mercedes requires the car to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before the key can be enabled. Plan for that if you have no other way to get around.
What will a Mercedes key replacement cost?
It depends on the key system, whether you have any working keys, the chassis, the type of key, and whether the ignition or steering lock also needs repair. We cover those factors on this page and can talk through your car on the phone.
Can you help if I'm locked out of my Mercedes at Fairplex or near Cal Poly Pomona?
Yes. Event-day lockouts and campus-area calls are part of normal life in Pomona, and our mobile vans cover the city. Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour and tell us where the car is parked.
What do I need to prove I own the car?
Bring photo ID and the title or registration, and have the VIN ready. Mercedes requires proof of ownership for dealer-ordered keys, and a responsible locksmith will ask for it as well.
