What is a transponder key, and why can't a hardware store copy it?
A transponder key looks like an ordinary car key, but the plastic head holds a small chip. When you turn the key or press the start button, your vehicle's immobilizer sends a signal to that chip and waits for the right code to come back. If the code matches, the engine is allowed to run. If it doesn't, the car stays immobilized no matter how perfectly the metal blade was cut.
That is why a plain cut copy so often fails. The blade may turn the lock, but the chip has never been introduced to the car. Transponder key programming is that introduction: we use professional equipment to register the chip with your vehicle's immobilizer so the car treats the key as its own. Many people searching for chip key replacement or a duplicate transponder key really need this step, not just a cut.
Not every key with a plastic head has a chip, and not every chip key works the same way. Some are a simple blade with a chip inside, some are remote-head keys, some fold out, and some are smart keys that stay in your pocket. What your car uses depends on its make, model and year, so we confirm by VIN and in person rather than guess over the phone.
When do Pasadena drivers need a transponder key programmed?
Most calls for car key programming fall into a handful of situations. Knowing which one is yours helps us tell you what to expect.
- You have one working key and want a spare before something goes wrong. This is a duplicate transponder key job, and it is usually the simpler situation.
- You lost your only key and the car will not start without one. This is an all-keys-lost situation, covered below.
- Your key was cracked, soaked or otherwise damaged and the car no longer recognizes it.
- You bought a used car with one key, or with an unknown number of keys, and want to be sure about who holds working copies.
- A replacement was cut somewhere else but never programmed, so it opens the door and nothing more.
How we handle transponder key programming, step by step
The process is the same whether you are parked at home or in a lot across town. What changes is what we find once we identify the system.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, make and model, and whether you still have a working key. The line is answered around the clock.
- We confirm the vehicle by VIN and ask to see proof that the car is yours, such as registration or title along with photo ID.
- A mobile van comes to wherever the car is parked, whether that is a driveway, a work lot or a curb.
- We identify the key type and check what your vehicle's immobilizer requires. If your car is a dealer-only case, we say so plainly at this point.
- If the key needs a blade, we cut it to fit your locks and ignition.
- We program the chip to your vehicle's immobilizer using professional diagnostic equipment.
- We test it properly: start the engine, run it, lock and unlock, and try any remote buttons. We also check your existing keys still work.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366What should you have ready before we arrive?
A few minutes of preparation keeps the visit short and avoids a wasted trip.
- Year, make and model of the vehicle, and the VIN, which is usually visible at the base of the windshield or on the driver's door jamb.
- Registration or title, plus a photo ID that matches.
- Every key you still have, including damaged or broken ones, since they tell us what the car uses.
- Exactly where the car is parked and any gate, garage or building access instructions.
- Whether the key you want is a basic key, a remote-head key or a push-button smart key.
Duplicate transponder key or all keys lost: what is the difference?
When you still have a working key, the car is still talking to a key it trusts. Depending on the vehicle, that can make adding another key more direct. It also means nobody is stranded, which is why getting a spare made now is usually the more economical route compared with waiting until the last key disappears.
All keys lost is a different job. There is no working key to start from, so the key has to be built from the vehicle's information and then introduced to the immobilizer from scratch. Some vehicles allow this at the curb, others need extra steps, and a few are dealer-only. Where the vehicle's system allows it, we can also have the lost key removed from the car's memory so it can no longer start the engine.
If you are in the second situation, our lost car key replacement page walks through it in more detail, and our broader car key replacement service covers the other ways a key goes missing.
What affects the cost of transponder key replacement?
We don't put numbers on a web page because the VIN and the key decide the price, and two cars that look alike can be very different. These are the real factors:
- Vehicle make, model and year. Some immobilizer systems are straightforward, others take more steps and more specialized equipment.
- Whether you have a working key. All keys lost generally involves more work than a duplicate.
- The type of key: a basic chip key, a remote-head key, a flip key or a smart key. If your key is mostly a remote, our key fob replacement page explains how that differs.
- Whether the blade needs cutting and what kind of cut it uses.
- How many keys are programmed in one visit.
- Where the car is and when you need us.
- Whether any part of the job has to go through a dealer.

We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which vehicles can we program, and when is it dealer-only?
We can't give an honest brand-by-brand list on a web page, because what can be programmed at the curb depends on the exact model, year and sometimes the immobilizer version inside it. Many vehicles can be handled on site with professional tools. Some, particularly certain newer or more heavily encrypted systems, require dealer-only procedures or codes. When yours is one of those, we will tell you on the phone or at the car instead of starting work we cannot finish.
If you have already bought a key online, tell us. Some work fine, but a chip that looks right can still be the wrong type, and we cannot promise every online key will program. We would rather check it first than have you pay for a part that doesn't fit your car.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for car key programming?
Plenty of companies list key programming. Here is what is actually behind ours:
- We have been in business since 1987, long enough to have worked through several generations of immobilizer systems.
- We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. Pasadena is about 23 miles from our base, and the mobile locksmith service means the work happens where your car is.
- We are one company, with no dispatch middlemen between your call and the technician.
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
- The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round.
Transponder key programming across Pasadena
We serve Pasadena ZIP codes 91101, 91103, 91104, 91105, 91106 and 91107. In the dense core around Old Pasadena, the Playhouse District and the South Lake District, many people live in condos and apartments, and controlled-access buildings are common along the Metro A Line corridor. If your car is parked behind a gate or in a building garage, tell us how to get in when you call, so we are not waiting at the door. A van can work wherever the car sits, which matters when your only key is gone and the car cannot be driven anywhere.
In residential areas like Bungalow Heaven, Oak Knoll and San Rafael, the usual job is a spare key programmed at the driveway. It is a good chore to do while you still have a working key in hand.
Event days are a different story. Rose Bowl events and the lots around Brookside Park are the kind of place where a key gets left inside a car, dropped or lost. If your key is locked in the car, that is a car lockout first. If the key is gone for good, we can program a new one after we get you in. Pasadena summers run hotter than coastal Los Angeles, so we also suggest keeping the spare at home rather than in the car.
If you drive to campus near Pasadena City College or Caltech with only one key, a duplicate transponder key is cheap insurance against a stranded day. If the key you already have is acting up and the car will not start, the cause may be the ignition rather than the key, in which case our ignition repair service is the better fit.
Frequently asked questions
How long does transponder key programming take?
It depends on the vehicle, the key type and whether you have a working key. We do not quote minutes because the system in your car decides it. Once we have your VIN and see the car, we can tell you what the job involves.
Can you program a key I bought online?
Often, but not always. Online keys vary, and a chip that looks correct can still be the wrong type for your immobilizer. Tell us what you bought when you call and we will check it against your VIN and let you know honestly if it will not work.
Do I need my original key to make a duplicate transponder key?
No, but having a working key can make the job more direct on many vehicles. If you have no working key, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job, which may involve more steps depending on the car.
Can you come to me, or do I bring the car to Westwood?
We come to you. Our mobile vans travel to Pasadena and work wherever the car is parked. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood if you prefer to bring the car, but with a lost key you probably cannot drive it anyway.
What if my car turns out to be dealer-only?
Some vehicles can only be programmed through the dealer. We confirm by VIN and in person, and if yours is one of them, we will tell you clearly rather than begin work we cannot complete.
Is a transponder key the same as a key fob?
Not exactly. A transponder chip lets the car start. A key fob is the remote that locks, unlocks or sometimes starts the car. Some keys combine both. Our key fob replacement page covers the remote side in more detail.
If I lose my key, can someone else still start my car with it?
Possibly, until the lost key is removed from the car's memory. Where your vehicle's system allows it, we can remove the lost key during programming so it no longer starts the engine. We confirm what your car supports when we check the VIN.
What proof of ownership do you need?
We ask to see registration or title and a photo ID that matches. It protects you, because a car key is not something anyone should program for a stranger.
