Mercedes-Benz key replacement in Oxnard

Wilshire Lock & Key replaces and programs Mercedes-Benz keys in Oxnard with mobile service, answered 24/7 at (213) 577-1366. Older SmartKey cars through roughly 2014 are usually work we can do at your curb, including all keys lost. Newer FBS4 cars are generally dealer-only, and we say so up front.

What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Oxnard usually need?

Most Mercedes-Benz key calls from Oxnard fall into a short list: a key that no longer turns, a SmartKey worn out from years of daily use, a fob with a dead battery, a cracked Chrome-key shell, or a key that is simply gone. Which of those you have matters less than the year of the car, because the year decides whether this is a curbside job or a dealer order.

Where it happens follows how people live here. Oxnard has substantial apartment stock, and the streets near Oxnard College and along Saviers Road mean shared lots and keys carried back and forth between a car and a unit. A fob left in a jacket upstairs is an easy mistake in that setting. In RiverPark and around The Collection at RiverPark, a dead fob battery shows up as a 'key not detected' message in a parking lot. Around Channel Islands Harbor and Mandalay State Beach, a key that goes to the dock or the sand is a key that can be dropped.

If you are locked out but still have the key somewhere, that is a different job, and our Oxnard car lockout page covers it. This page is about replacing, adding and programming Mercedes keys.

  • A key that will not turn even though the dash wakes up. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failing electronic steering lock motor causes exactly this, and a new key will not fix it.
  • Remote buttons that die first, then a 'key not detected' warning on Keyless-Go cars. Often this is only a battery.
  • A worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing with the car.
  • A cracked shell, worn buttons or a broken emergency blade.
  • A lost key, or every key lost.

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

Oxnard is about 58 miles from our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, so we bring the work to you in a mobile van instead of asking you to move the car. Our phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year. When you call, we will give you a realistic arrival window for your location rather than a promise we cannot keep.

Here is how a typical visit goes on a car we can serve:

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model, the year and what you still have: one working key, a dead fob, or nothing.
  2. We work out which system the car uses. Older cars are FBS3 and newer ones are FBS4. Borderline years are confirmed by VIN, not guessed.
  3. We ask for proof of ownership before making a key. Any careful locksmith should.
  4. At the car, we read the electronic ignition (EIS or EZS) over infrared or the OBD port, and the key password is calculated online.
  5. We generate the new key. On the W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is part of an all-keys-lost job.
  6. We test starting, locking, unlocking and the remote buttons before we pack up.

What are the Mercedes-Benz key eras, in plain terms?

Mercedes-Benz does not use a conventional transponder key, and there is no simple clone-able chip inside. From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, the key and the car trade rolling codes over infrared. That is the familiar Chrome key or black SmartKey that slides into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. The system is called DAS3/FBS3.

Then Mercedes moved to a newer system, FBS4, on a model-by-model schedule instead of all at once:

FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

The muddy case is the late ML and GLE (W166). Most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes fallback-process bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4. So we confirm that one by VIN rather than assume. If someone quotes you on a late ML or GLE without checking the VIN, be careful.

  • Facelifted W212 E-Class: from April 2013 production.
  • CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156): from November 2014.
  • New platforms from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253) and 2017 E-Class (W213).

Which Mercedes-Benz keys can we make, and which are dealer-only?

FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014, plus most GLE/W166 cars through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, are fully serviceable by a specialist locksmith. The tools specialists use for this, such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites and Autel IM-series equipment, read the ignition, calculate the key password and generate new keys. That covers adding a spare, replacing a worn key, and starting from nothing.

FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, are effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys. We say that plainly. The keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait.

Limited specialist capability for FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something to count on. We would rather tell you to call the dealer on the phone than drive out to Oxnard and find the same thing at your curb.

What if you have lost every Mercedes-Benz key?

All keys lost sounds like the worst case, and on an FBS3 car it is routine work for a specialist. We read the EIS/EZS, calculate the password, and generate a new key at the vehicle. On the W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212, we add the steering-lock emulator to the job. You do not need to get the car to a shop first. Our lost car key replacement service in Oxnard page has the general picture for any make.

On an FBS4 car, a lost key means a VIN-coded dealer order with proof of ownership and a multi-day wait. Budget for it, and plan for how the car will get to the dealer if it cannot start. That is not what anyone wants to hear at night in a parking lot, but you are better off hearing it from us than after paying for a visit that cannot solve it.

Before you assume the key is the problem, know that a failed steering lock motor on a W204 or W207 can look just like a bad key. The dash wakes up and the key will not turn. If we suspect that, we will say so before programming anything.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Oxnard?

We do not quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on the car. Here is what moves the cost, roughly in order of importance:

Once we have the VIN, we can tell you what applies. We would rather quote after that than guess and change the story at your curb. If all you need is a battery or a new shell, our key fob replacement in Oxnard page explains that lighter-cost route.

  • FBS3 or FBS4. This decides whether a locksmith can do the job at all.
  • The chassis. A W204, W207 or pre-facelift W212 in all-keys-lost needs an extra emulator step.
  • Whether you are adding a spare while one key still works, or starting from no keys.
  • What the key itself needs: a battery, a replacement shell, a worn SmartKey, or a full new key.
  • Whether the real fault is the ignition or the steering lock motor, which is a repair rather than a key.
  • The hour of the call and the drive out from our Westwood base to your part of Oxnard.
  • On a dealer order, the proof-of-ownership paperwork and the multi-day wait, which is time as much as money.

Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: how do you choose?

It is simpler than it sounds. If your Mercedes is FBS4, the dealer is the realistic route for a new key, and we will tell you so. If it is FBS3, we can usually do the work at your curb, which spares you a tow, a day at a service department and the wait for a key to be ordered.

The dealer is also the right call when the diagnosis points beyond the key: a failed ignition or steering lock motor is a repair, and we will tell you plainly if that is what we see. For a broader overview of the brand, see our Mercedes-Benz car key guide.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Mercedes-Benz?

A few straightforward reasons, nothing fancy:

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number before work starts, including us. You can also reach us through our contact page if you would rather write first.

  • We have been in business since 1987.
  • We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans.
  • We are one company. There is no dispatch middleman passing your call to whoever is nearest.
  • David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
  • The phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366.

Mercedes-Benz key service across Oxnard neighborhoods and ZIP codes

We serve all of Oxnard, including ZIP codes 93030, 93033, 93035 and 93036. That covers Downtown Oxnard and La Colonia, RiverPark and Seabridge, Mandalay Bay and Oxnard Shores, and neighborhoods such as Via Marina, Marina West, Mar Vista, Carriage Square and Sierra Linda.

Housing varies a lot, and it affects the visit. Near downtown, early-1900s bungalows in the Henry T. Oxnard Historic District sit close to broad postwar single-family tracts. RiverPark in the north is a 2000s master-planned community. Waterfront areas like Mandalay Bay, Seabridge and the Channel Islands Harbor area mix beach houses and condos, many with HOA gates and private docks. If your car is behind one of those gates, tell us how to get through when you call so the van is not stuck at the entrance.

Oxnard also sits directly on the coast, with a persistent marine layer and salt-laden air that corrodes exterior locks, deadbolts and gate hardware faster than inland. If you are calling about the Mercedes and your front door or dock gate has started to stick, mention it. We can look at it while we are there. Our Oxnard locksmith page lists the rest of what we do in the city, and the car key replacement overview for Oxnard covers other makes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you replace a Mercedes-Benz key at my home or work in Oxnard?

If the car is FBS3, usually yes. The work is done at the vehicle with a mobile van. If it is FBS4, replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, and we will tell you that on the phone. We confirm which one you have by VIN.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Roughly, cars through about 2014 are FBS3 and approximately 2015 onward are FBS4, though some models changed earlier and some late cars are unclear. The late W166 ML and GLE is the main example, so we confirm by VIN rather than by model year alone.

Can you make a key for a newer C-Class, GLC or E-Class?

The 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253) and 2017 E-Class (W213) used FBS4 from launch. Those are effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys. We will not take a trip out to Oxnard for work we cannot do.

How long does a dealer key order take?

Expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and the car has to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before the key can be enabled. We do not promise a specific timeframe.

What proof of ownership will I need?

Mercedes requires proof of ownership for a VIN-coded key, and we ask for it too before making any key. Registration and photo ID are the usual place to start. Tell us if your paperwork is complicated and we will explain what to bring.

My key goes in but will not turn, and the dash lights up. Is the key bad?

Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering lock motor causes this symptom and imitates a bad key. We will diagnose it before programming a key that will not help.

Do I need a whole new key, or just a battery?

If remote buttons die first and a Keyless-Go car says 'key not detected,' it is often just a fob battery. That is the lighter-cost fix. A worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing or a cracked shell may need more. See our key fob page for Oxnard for the options.

Is the Mercedes key we program a clone of my old one?

No. Mercedes does not use a clone-able chip like many other brands. On FBS3 cars, the electronic ignition is read, the key password is calculated and a new key is generated. On FBS4 cars, the keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

Do you take calls at night in Oxnard?

Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. Oxnard is about 58 miles from our Westwood storefront, so ask for a realistic arrival window when you call.

Is Wilshire Lock & Key licensed to do this work?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for the number before work starts. That applies to us too. You are always welcome to ask when you call.
