Mercedes-Benz key replacement in Northridge

Wilshire Lock & Key replaces and programs Mercedes-Benz keys in Northridge with mobile service, answered 24/7 at (213) 577-1366. Older SmartKey cars (FBS3) we can usually handle at the curb; newer FBS4 cars are effectively dealer-only, and we'll tell you that plainly on the phone.

What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Northridge typically need?

Northridge is a driving neighborhood. Students commute to California State University, Northridge (CSUN). Shoppers and retail staff fill the lots around Northridge Fashion Center. Doctors, nurses and visitors come and go near Dignity Health Northridge Hospital Medical Center, and families live in ranch-style tract homes. A Mercedes-Benz in that mix gets parked in apartment lots, mall and hospital parking, and driveways, and the key problems tend to follow where the car sits.

Around the CSUN campus area much of the housing is student-oriented apartment complexes, and the busiest stretches are semester move-in and move-out. Picture the day: boxes in the back seat, a roommate holding the spare, a fob left in a jacket that is now packed in a box somewhere. That is the kind of day a key goes missing, and a Mercedes is not a car you want to leave overnight in a lot while you sort it out.

Most of the Mercedes calls we expect from Northridge fall into a few groups:

  • A key that is lost completely, with no working spare anywhere
  • A single remaining key that is worn, cracked or failing, and an owner who wants a second one made before it quits
  • A Keyless-Go car that reports 'key not detected' because the fob battery has died
  • A broken emergency blade or a cracked Chrome-key shell
  • A key that goes in but will not turn, which is not always a key problem (more on that below)

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

We run mobile vans out of a Westwood storefront, so the work comes to your car instead of the other way around. Northridge is about 20 miles from our base, and the phone is answered around the clock, every day of the year. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model, the year, where the car is parked, and whether you have any working key at all.
  2. We sort the car into one of two families, FBS3 or FBS4, by model and year. Where the year is close to a changeover, we confirm by VIN. If your car is FBS4 and dealer-only, we say so before anyone drives out.
  3. We ask for proof that the car is yours, typically your ID and registration or title. That protects you as much as us.
  4. For FBS3 cars, the technician connects professional key tools to the electronic ignition (the EIS/EZS) over infrared or the OBD port, calculates the key password online, and generates a new key.
  5. On some chassis, specifically the W204 C-Class, the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, an all-keys-lost job also needs a steering-lock emulator (ESL/ELV) in the process.
  6. We test the new key in the ignition, check the remote buttons, and make sure the car recognizes it before we leave.

Which Mercedes key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes we work from our data uses an electronic SmartKey, not a conventional transponder key with a chip that can be cloned. The key and the car trade rolling codes over infrared. That matters because it changes who can make you a new key.

From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used what is called the DAS3/FBS3 system. This is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that slides into the electronic ignition and twists. These cars are fully serviceable by a specialist locksmith with the right tools, including when every key is gone.

Mercedes then moved to FBS4 on a model-by-model schedule rather than all at once:

  • Facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production
  • CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014
  • New platforms from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253) and 2017 E-Class (W213)
  • Most W166 ML/GLE models stayed FBS3 until production ended in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4

What if your Mercedes is a late-build GLE or a changeover year?

For the W166 and for any car near a changeover date, we do not guess. Production month and VIN decide the system, not the model year printed on the registration. We confirm by VIN in a quick check before we promise anything. FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory. That is why those cars behave so differently when a key is lost.

What happens if you've lost every Mercedes key?

All keys lost is where the FBS3 and FBS4 split matters most, so here it is straight.

On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is a job we do. The technician reads the ignition module, calculates the key password, and builds a new key from scratch. On the W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis, the steering-lock emulator is part of the process. It takes longer than adding a key to a car that still has one working.

On an FBS4 car, an added or replacement key is effectively dealer-only. The key is ordered from Mercedes pre-coded to your VIN, and you need proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin also requires the vehicle to be registered as present in its Xentry Diagnostics system before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait, and you may need to arrange transport for the car. Some specialists are developing limited FBS4 capability, but it is not something to count on, and we will not pretend otherwise.

If you are not sure which side your car is on, call. A two-minute conversation about model and year saves you from paying for a wasted trip. If you only need to get into the car first, our Northridge car lockout service is a separate and lighter job, and our page on lost car key replacement in Northridge covers the wider process.

What affects the cost of Mercedes key replacement in Northridge?

We do not publish numbers on a page like this because Mercedes keys vary too much for a single figure to be honest. Here is what actually moves the cost:

  • FBS3 or FBS4. An FBS3 job is a locksmith job. An FBS4 job runs through the dealer and its ordering process.
  • Whether you still have a working key. Adding a key to a car that can still talk to its ignition is simpler than rebuilding from nothing.
  • The chassis. W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 cars need the steering-lock emulator for all keys lost, which adds equipment and time.
  • The type of key. A Chrome key, a black SmartKey and a Keyless-Go fob are different parts with different shells and electronics.
  • How many keys you want. Having a spare made while the technician is already connected is usually the more economical route compared with a second visit later.
  • When and where. A call in the middle of the night with the van traveling across the Valley is not the same as a daytime appointment.
  • What the real fault is. If the problem turns out to be a worn ignition or a failed steering-lock motor, you are paying to fix that, not just for a key.

Dealer or locksmith: which is the fair call?

Both have a place. For FBS4 cars, the dealer is the answer, and a locksmith telling you otherwise should be questioned. You will order a VIN-coded key with proof of ownership, wait for it, and have the car registered in Xentry. We can help you understand the process and tell you what to bring.

For FBS3 cars, a mobile specialist is often the practical choice. The car does not need to be towed, and you are not scheduling around a service department. We bring the tools to wherever the car is parked, whether that is an apartment lot, a driveway or the street.

If you are unsure, we would rather give you a straight answer on the phone than send a van to a car we cannot help. See our overview of Mercedes-Benz car keys for more on how these systems are handled generally.

Common Mercedes key problems that look like a bad key

Not every 'my key stopped working' call is actually a key problem. A few things to know before you pay for a new one:

  • A failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition can mean the key is not recognized or will not turn, even though the key is fine.
  • On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed steering-lock motor (ESL/ELV) can leave the dash awake while the key refuses to turn. It mimics a bad key.
  • SmartKeys wear out after years of daily use and stop syncing with the car.
  • Dead fob batteries come first: the remote buttons go, then Keyless-Go cars start reporting 'key not detected'.
  • Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons and broken emergency blades are common and often fixable without a full replacement.
  • On FBS4 cars, losing the only key means a dealer order. Budget time for it.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

We have been in business since 1987, working out of a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, with mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call, you reach our company, not a dispatch middleman who sells the job to whoever is nearby. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One more thing worth doing with any locksmith, including us: ask for their BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. California requires locksmith companies to hold one, and a reputable company will not mind the question.

If you only need a battery or a replacement remote and the car still starts, our key fob replacement in Northridge page is the closer fit. The full range of what we do for vehicles is on our Northridge car key replacement page.

Mercedes key help around Northridge: neighborhoods and ZIP codes

We serve Northridge in both ZIP codes, 91324 and 91325, and the places where Mercedes owners tend to call from are as varied as the housing. Around the CSUN campus area, the apartment complexes see heavy turnover, and worn hardware in high-turnover student housing is one more reason a lost key can mean a lockout and a car problem at the same time. Near the Northridge Fashion Center district and the Devonshire Street, Reseda Boulevard, Nordhoff Street and Tampa Avenue corridors, you have a mix of retail, medical offices and homes, and a key problem can start in a parking lot as easily as in a driveway.

The Devonshire corridor tracts are postwar ranch homes from the 1950s and 60s. Much of the multifamily housing across Northridge was repaired or rebuilt after the 1994 earthquake, so door frames and hardware vary widely in age. Toward Sherwood Forest on the western edge, the lots are larger and more semi-rural, which can mean a longer walk from the car to the house and a key that gets left in the wrong place.

Summers in the North Valley are long and hot, and fall brings Santa Ana wind events. Being stuck beside a Mercedes with no key in that heat is miserable, so we would rather you call early than wait it out. If you commute from the Northridge Metrolink station area and come back to a car that will not recognize its key, call us from the platform and we will tell you what to expect before you decide anything. For the broader picture of what we do locally, see our Northridge locksmith page, or contact us if you prefer to write.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key if I've lost all my keys?

On FBS3 cars, yes. We read the ignition, calculate the key password online and generate a new key, using a steering-lock emulator on W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis. On FBS4 cars, a replacement key is effectively dealer-only, ordered pre-coded to your VIN with proof of ownership.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Model and year give a good first answer, but changeover dates vary by model, and the W166 ML/GLE is one example where late cars are confirmed by VIN. Call us with your model and year, and we will tell you where the car likely falls and confirm by VIN where needed.

Do you work on newer push-button-start Mercedes?

Generally, FBS4 cars pair with push-button start, and added or replacement keys for them are effectively dealer-only. Limited specialist capability is emerging, but we will not tell you to count on it. We would rather say so on the phone than send a van.

Can you just copy my existing Mercedes key?

Not in the sense of cloning a chip. The key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared, so there is nothing to clone. On FBS3 cars, we generate a new key that the car's ignition accepts, which is a programming job, not a copy.

My key won't turn but the dashboard lights up. Is the key bad?

Possibly, but not always. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed steering-lock motor produces exactly this symptom. A failing electronic ignition can do it too. We check before replacing anything.

Will you come to my apartment lot near CSUN?

Yes. Our vans serve Northridge, and the phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day. Tell us the address or lot, the car's model and year, and whether you have any working key.

Do I need proof of ownership?

Yes. For locksmith work we will ask for ID and registration or title. For FBS4 dealer orders, Mercedes requires proof of ownership as well. It is there to protect you.

How do I check that a locksmith is legitimate?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work starts. A reputable company will give it without hesitation.
