What is transponder key programming, and does your car need it?

A transponder key looks like an ordinary key, but the plastic head holds a small chip. When you turn the key or press the start button, the car's immobilizer asks that chip for a coded answer. If the code is right, the engine is allowed to start. If it is wrong, or missing, the car may crank and then quit, or it may not crank at all. That is the whole point of the system: a blank key cut at a hardware counter can open the door and even turn the ignition, but the engine will not run.

Transponder key programming is the step that teaches the car to accept a new chip. Cutting the metal blade is one job. Pairing the chip with the vehicle is a second job, and it needs the right equipment and the right access method for your specific car. We do both at once, so you leave with a key that opens the door, turns the ignition, and starts the engine.

Whether your car uses this kind of key depends on the make, model, and year. We do not guess from memory. If you give us the year, make, and model, we can usually tell you what to expect on the phone, and we confirm everything by VIN or in person before we start work. If the key has a thick plastic head, or if the original had a rubber or plastic section that looks bulkier than a plain brass key, that is a common sign of a chip inside.

Duplicate transponder key or chip key replacement: which situation are you in?

People call us about transponder keys in two very different situations, and the work differs between them.

The first is a spare. You still have a working key, and you want a duplicate transponder key before something goes wrong. This is the calmer, more economical route in almost every case, because the car can be programmed while a working key is available, and nobody is stranded. If you are thinking about it and have been putting it off, doing it while you still hold a key is the practical choice.

The second is a full replacement, sometimes called an all-keys-lost situation. Nothing in your hand starts the car. Chip key replacement in this case usually takes more steps, because the car has no existing key to work from. We may need to access the vehicle's immobilizer system directly, and the work can vary a lot from one vehicle to the next.

  • Spare key: you have a working key and want a backup chip key programmed.
  • Replacement key: you lost or broke your only key, or the chip failed.
  • Extra key for a driver: a family member, roommate, or employee needs their own key to the same car.
  • Failed key: the blade turns the ignition but the engine will not stay running, so the chip may not be talking to the car.

How do we program a transponder key? The process, step by step

The details change by vehicle, but the sequence is consistent. You will know what is happening at each stage, and we tell you before we do anything that changes the outcome.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. We ask for the year, make, and model, whether you have any working key, and where the car is parked.
  2. We tell you plainly what the job usually involves for that vehicle, including anything that may need the dealer or additional confirmation.
  3. A mobile van comes to the car, or you bring the car to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. Either way works for most jobs.
  4. We confirm the vehicle by VIN and check that the car is yours, so we are not programming a key for someone else's vehicle.
  5. We cut the key blade to match your door and ignition, if the key is a type that needs cutting.
  6. We connect programming equipment and add the new key to the immobilizer. When the car allows it, existing keys are kept working too.
  7. We test the key on the door, the ignition, and the engine, and we check that any buttons on the key head respond.
  8. We go over what you have, and we recommend a spare if you only have one key after the job.

What affects the cost of transponder key programming?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because honest pricing depends on facts we do not have until we know your car. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down, so there are no surprises when we do quote you.

The main factor is the vehicle itself. Different makes and model years use different chip types and different programming methods. Some are quick; others need more steps and more specialized equipment.

The second factor is whether you have a working key. Adding a spare to a car that already has one is usually the lighter-cost option. A true all-keys-lost job often takes more time and effort.

  • Make, model, and year of the vehicle, which sets the chip type and the programming method.
  • Whether you have a working key now, or none at all.
  • The type of key: a basic chip key, a key with remote buttons, or a push-start smart key. Some of these overlap with our work on a key fob replacement.
  • Whether the blade needs to be cut, and how complex the cut is.
  • Where the car is. A van visit to your location costs us more time than a drive-in to the storefront.
  • The time of day. We answer 24/7, and an overnight call involves different logistics than a weekday visit.
  • Anything unusual, such as a damaged ignition that has to be dealt with first.

When a car key job is dealer-only or needs extra confirmation

We would rather tell you the truth before you spend money. Not every car can be programmed by an independent locksmith. Some vehicles lock key programming behind manufacturer-only access, and some need a key code or security data that only the dealer can release. In those cases, we will say so on the phone or at the car, and we will point you to the dealer rather than start work we cannot finish.

There are also cases where the available information is unclear or conflicting for a given model year. Manufacturers sometimes change systems partway through a production run, and a year-make-model lookup does not always settle it. When that happens, we confirm by VIN and in person rather than promise something we have not verified.

If your problem is not the key at all, we will tell you that too. A worn or damaged ignition cylinder can mimic a key problem, and a key that sticks, turns hard, or breaks off may point to an issue better handled by ignition repair or, if a piece of the key is stuck, broken key extraction.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for car key programming

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. North Hollywood is one of the places we regularly work, and it is about 14 miles from our Westwood base. We run a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and mobile service vans, so you can choose to come in or have us come to you.

When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach our own operation, not a call center that sells your job to whoever picks it up. There is no dispatch middleman between you and the person who does the work. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how we handle automotive work, and that matters on a job where one wrong step can leave a car stuck.

Transponder key programming in North Hollywood: what it looks like on the ground

North Hollywood is a flat valley neighborhood with a mix of housing, and that mix shapes the calls we get for car keys. Interior streets in places like Toluca Woods and West Toluca Lake have older bungalows from the 1920s to the 1940s. Much of the area is postwar apartment stock, and there is a newer wave of mid-rise, transit-oriented buildings around the North Hollywood Metro station. The neighborhood is majority renter, so many drivers share a building, a lot, or a street with neighbors, and a car key is often the one key that ties a person to their commute and their job.

One scenario we see in the area is car key replacement near the North Hollywood Metro B/G Line Station. If you park near the station and lose your key, or find that the chip key no longer starts the car, you need the vehicle to come back to life where it sits, not on a tow truck. That is exactly what a mobile van is for. We come to the car, confirm the vehicle, and program the new key on the spot when the car allows it.

We work across the neighborhood's ZIP codes, including 91601 near the NoHo Arts District, 91605 and 91606 toward Valley Plaza and the Magnolia Boulevard corridor, and 91602 near Toluca Lake. If you are along the Lankershim Boulevard corridor and need a key made, the same process applies.

Summer in this part of the valley is hot and dry. Waiting in or next to a parked car in that heat is not pleasant, which is another reason to arrange a mobile visit instead of hunting for a ride.

If you are locked out of the car rather than needing a new chip key, see our car lockout page, which is a different job from programming.

How to check any locksmith before you hand over your car

California requires locksmith companies to hold a locksmith company license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), called an LCO license. Ask any locksmith for it before work starts, and write the number down. A real company will give it to you without a fuss.

Car key programming is a job where you are trusting someone with the way your car starts, so a few other checks are worth the time.

Our own license number is being added to this site, and until it appears here we would rather not state anything about it. Ask us when you call and we will answer directly.

  • Ask for the BSIS LCO license number, and ask who will actually come to the car.
  • Ask what the quote covers: the key, the cutting, the programming, and any visit charge.
  • Be wary of a very low phone quote that grows once the technician arrives.
  • Expect to show proof that the car is yours, such as registration and ID.
  • Ask whether your existing keys will keep working after the job.

What to have ready when you call

A few details speed things up. None of them are required to start the conversation, but each one helps us tell you what to expect.

If you have a spare key, even a worn one, keep it with you. If you want a second key made from your only working key, key duplication is the broader topic, and for chip keys the programming is what counts. If you have lost every key and need a full replacement, our lost car key replacement page explains how that situation differs. And if you would rather have us come to the car, our mobile locksmith service covers North Hollywood.

  • Year, make, and model of the vehicle.
  • The VIN, found on the dashboard near the windshield or on the driver's door jamb.
  • Registration or other proof of ownership, plus your ID.
  • How many keys you have now, and whether any still starts the car.
  • Exactly where the car is parked, including the cross streets.

Frequently asked questions

What is a transponder key?

It is a car key with a small chip in the head. The chip sends a coded signal to the car's immobilizer, and the engine will only start if the code matches. A plain copy of the metal blade will not start a car that uses this system.

Can you program a transponder key if I lost all my keys?

In many cases, yes, though it generally takes more steps than adding a spare. Some vehicles need dealer-only access, and we tell you that honestly. We confirm by VIN and in person before we promise anything. Call (213) 577-1366 with your car's year, make, and model.

Is a duplicate transponder key cheaper than a replacement after losing everything?

Usually a spare made while you still have a working key is the more economical route, because the car does not have to be started from nothing. We do not post prices online. Cost depends on the vehicle, the key type, and where the car is, and we explain it when you call.

Do you come to me, or do I need to bring the car in?

Either. We have mobile vans that come to your car in North Hollywood, and a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood. If the car will not start, the mobile option avoids a tow.

Will my old key still work after you program a new one?

It depends on the vehicle. On many cars, the existing keys keep working when a key is added. On some, the process resets the keys, and we then reprogram everything you hand us. We tell you which applies before we begin.

Do I need to show proof the car is mine?

Yes. We ask for registration or similar proof along with your ID, since programming a key gives someone the ability to start the car. It is a normal step, and any legitimate locksmith should ask for it.

What if the key turns but the car will not start?

That can mean the chip is damaged or no longer recognized by the immobilizer, but it can also point to a worn ignition or a different fault. We check it when we are at the car. If it is the ignition, we will say so rather than program a key you do not need.

Can you make a key with remote buttons or a push-start key?

Often, yes, but it varies a lot by vehicle, and some are dealer-only. Remote buttons and push-start smart keys are programmed differently from a basic chip key. We confirm by VIN before starting, and we tell you plainly if the car needs the dealer.
