Why won't my safe open?
A safe that won't open almost always falls into one of a handful of situations, and knowing which one you are in changes what we do. Sometimes the combination is simply lost or half-remembered. Sometimes the keypad is dead because the batteries ran down, or the display lights up but the bolt will not retract. Sometimes the dial feels gritty or the numbers no longer line up the way they used to. And sometimes the key snapped, went missing, or never came with the safe in the first place, which is common with safes bought secondhand or inherited from a relative.
Each of those is a different problem with a different fix. A dead battery on an electronic safe is usually a ten-minute annoyance when the safe has an external battery contact or an override key. A worn mechanical dial, a bent spindle, or a jammed bolt is a repair job. A lost combination on a safe with no backup is a true lockout, and that is where the real locksmith skill comes in.
This page covers what a safe locksmith actually does, how we approach a safe that won't open, what drives the cost without putting a number on something we haven't seen, and how safe work fits into North Hollywood homes and businesses. If you are standing in front of a locked safe right now, call (213) 577-1366. A person answers around the clock, every day of the year.
What safe locksmith services do we handle in North Hollywood?
Safe work is its own specialty inside locksmithing. It is not the same trade as cutting keys or changing a deadbolt, and a company that mostly does door hardware may not be set up for it. We have been in business since 1987, and safes are part of the work we do for homes and businesses across the area. Here is what that covers:
- Locked safe opening and safe lockout service for home safes, gun safes, fire safes, floor safes, wall safes and office safes
- Commercial safe opening for business safes, deposit safes and back-office cabinets
- Lost safe combination recovery on mechanical dial safes and electronic keypad safes
- Safe combination change and safe code reset, including after an employee leaves or a tenant moves out
- Safe lock repair, including mechanical safe lock repair and safe dial repair
- Electronic safe repair: dead keypads, failed boards, unresponsive solenoids, and battery-compartment problems
- Safe lock replacement, including digital safe lock replacement when an electronic lock has failed beyond repair
- Safe key replacement for key-operated safe locks and for override keys on electronic models

Call (213) 577-1366How do we open a locked safe?
There is no single method, because there is no single kind of safe. A thin-walled in-room safe with a keypad is a very different object from a fire-rated mechanical safe with a dial. Here is the general order we work in, and why.
One honest point first: we do not promise that a safe will open without any mark on it until we have seen the safe and know its lock type. Some safes can be opened cleanly. Some cannot, and anyone who tells you otherwise over the phone is guessing.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and describe the safe: brand if you know it, whether it has a dial, keypad or key, whether it is bolted down, and what happened. Photos of the safe front and any label help.
- We ask who owns the safe and what you can show us. A safe is exactly the kind of item where a locksmith should confirm that the person asking is entitled to open it, so expect that question and expect to answer it.
- A mobile van comes to you. If the safe is small or portable and the repair needs a bench, we can discuss bringing it to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd instead.
- We start with the least invasive route: checking batteries and override access on electronic safes, trying known manufacturer procedures, and, on mechanical locks, working the lock by feel and manipulation where the safe's construction allows it.
- If a clean method will not work, we explain the next option before we do anything. That may be drilling at a precise point to defeat the lock, which leaves a hole that has to be repaired or the lock replaced. You decide before we start.
- Once the safe is open, we check the lock and bolt work. If the lock failed or was damaged during opening, we repair or replace it, then set a new combination or code so you leave with a safe that works.
- We test the new combination or key several times with the door open, then closed, so you know it is dependable before we pack up.
What about lost combinations, code resets and combination changes?
These three get confused, so it is worth separating them. A lost safe combination means you cannot open the safe at all, and that is an opening job. A safe combination change means the safe opens fine and you want a new number, usually for security. A safe code reset on a digital safe is often the same idea, done through the keypad or a master or programming code.
On a mechanical dial safe, changing the combination is done with a change key inside the lock case, and it needs the door open. That is why we recommend changing the combination right after any opening, any time someone who knew the number no longer needs it, and any time you buy a used safe. A secondhand safe has a combination that some other person may still remember.
Electronic safes let you reset the code more easily, but they have their own failure points. If a keypad accepts the code and the bolt does not move, the issue is often a motor or solenoid rather than the code. If the keypad does nothing at all, it may be the battery contacts, the wiring to the board, or the board itself. We diagnose that before suggesting a replacement, because digital safe lock replacement is a real expense that you should only face when the lock truly needs it.
Write the new combination down and keep it somewhere that is not the safe. That sounds obvious, and it is the reason a good share of safe lockouts happen in the first place.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of safe locksmith work?
We will not quote a figure for a safe we have not seen, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Safe jobs vary more than almost any other locksmith work. These are the real factors that move the cost:
- The type of lock: a simple key lock, a mechanical dial lock and a high-security electronic lock take different tools and different amounts of time
- The safe's construction: thin sheet-metal safes behave very differently from heavy, fire-rated or burglary-rated safes with hardened plate and relockers
- Whether a clean opening method works or drilling is required, since drilling adds both labor and the cost of repairing or replacing the lock afterward
- Whether the lock needs repair, a new part, or a full replacement, including digital safe lock replacement
- Where the safe is: a freestanding safe in a closet is easier than a floor safe set in concrete or a wall safe behind a finished surface
- Whether we can do the work at your location or the safe needs to come to the shop
- The time of day, since a night, weekend or holiday call involves a different situation than a scheduled daytime visit
- Whether you want the combination changed, keys made, or a mechanical lock swapped for a keypad as part of the same visit
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a safe?
We are not going to tell you we are the biggest or the fastest. Here is what is actually true and relevant when you are choosing someone to open a safe that holds your documents, jewelry, cash or firearms.
- We have been in business since 1987, so this is not a side job picked up last year
- We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so there is a real place behind the phone number and a bench for work that cannot be done at your door
- You reach one company. We do not pass your call to a dispatch middleman who then sends whoever is available
- David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, so you are dealing with someone who answers for how a job is done
- The phone is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, because safes do not choose convenient times to jam
Safe opening in North Hollywood: what we see around here
North Hollywood is mostly a renter neighborhood, with housing that runs from 1920s-40s bungalows on interior streets to a large postwar apartment stock and newer mid-rise buildings around the Metro B/G Line station. That mix shapes the kinds of safe calls that make sense here, and we are about 14 miles from our Westwood storefront, so we serve the area as part of our regular range.
In the NoHo Arts District, where newer mid-rise apartment buildings have gone up, a tenant with an in-unit closet safe or small fire safe is a typical scenario. People move in, set a code, and forget it, or leave a safe locked when they move out. If you are also locked out of the unit, our apartment lockout service is a separate job from the safe. On the property side, landlords and managers dealing with a safe left behind by a former tenant can talk to us through our locksmith for landlords page. We will want to confirm who has the right to open a safe before we touch it.
In the older neighborhoods, such as Toluca Woods and West Toluca Lake, longtime homes are where we would expect older mechanical dial safes, inherited safes and wall or floor units installed decades ago. Those are the ones where the combination died with the previous owner, or where the dial has worn after years of use. Mechanical safe lock repair and safe dial repair fit that situation well.
Valley Plaza and the surrounding blocks mix homes, apartments and small businesses. Whether you are in ZIP 91601, 91606, 91605 or 91602, the process is the same: call, describe the safe, and we come to you or arrange for the safe to be brought in if that makes more sense. One practical point from the local climate: summers here are hot and dry, and a safe sitting in an uninsulated garage or storage room can be hard on battery-powered keypads. If an electronic safe stored in a hot space starts misbehaving, a battery swap is the first thing to check.

Call (213) 577-1366Commercial safe opening for North Hollywood businesses
North Hollywood has plenty of storefronts along Lankershim and Magnolia Boulevards, and small venues and theaters in the NoHo Arts District. Many of them keep a safe in a back office for deposits, petty cash, ticket proceeds or important paperwork. When that safe will not open, the problem is more urgent, because the business may be unable to operate normally until it is solved.
Commercial safe opening often involves things a home job does not. There may be multiple people who knew the combination, a manager who left, or a time-lock or dual-control feature on the safe. We recommend a safe combination change whenever staff turnover happens, and a written record kept by the owner rather than by one employee.
If your issue is a door rather than the safe, our commercial locksmith page covers storefront and office hardware. We keep the safe page focused on safes so you do not have to guess which service you need.
What to have ready when you call
You do not need to know the technical details. A few facts make the first conversation much more useful and help us bring the right tools in the van.
- The brand and model, usually on a label inside the door, on the back, or on the owner's manual
- Whether the safe has a dial, an electronic keypad, a key lock, or a combination of these
- Whether you still have any keys, manuals, or paperwork, including any original combination card
- What happened: lost code, dead keypad, jammed bolt, snapped key, or a safe that was left locked by someone else
- Where the safe is, and whether it is bolted to the floor or wall
- A way to show that the safe is yours or that you are authorized to open it
A note on choosing any locksmith
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any company that shows up at your door for its license number, and check it with the state if you want certainty. This matters even more for safes, because you are letting a stranger work on the place where you keep your most valuable things.
If you also want to upgrade after a safe lockout, a high-security lock on your home's entry door is a sensible companion step, and our residential locksmith page explains the home side of our work. For after-hours situations, our emergency locksmith page and our mobile locksmith page describe how the vans work.
Frequently asked questions
Can you open a safe if I lost the combination?
In most cases, yes, though the method depends on the safe. Some can be opened by working the lock without damage, and others need drilling at a specific point. We tell you which route applies before we start, and then we repair or replace the lock and set a new combination.
Will opening my safe damage it?
Sometimes not, sometimes yes. We will not promise a mark-free opening until we have seen the safe. If drilling is the only practical option, we explain that first, and the lock is repaired or replaced afterward so the safe works properly.
What if my electronic safe keypad is dead?
Start with the batteries. Many electronic safes have an external contact or an override key. If fresh batteries do nothing, the problem may be the wiring, the board, or the bolt motor, and that is an electronic safe repair or a digital safe lock replacement.
Do you change the combination on a safe I just bought used?
We recommend it. A used safe has a combination someone else may remember. On a mechanical dial safe, the combination is changed with the door open, so it is best done right after opening or inspection.
Can you make a replacement key for my safe?
Often, yes. Safe key replacement depends on the lock. If the key code is stamped on the lock or recorded, it is straightforward. If not, we may need to look at the lock itself. Safes that use high-security keys may be more limited, and we will say so if that applies.
Do you open commercial safes for businesses in North Hollywood?
Yes. We handle commercial safe opening, combination changes after staff turnover, and repair of older safe locks. We ask for confirmation that the person calling is authorized, which protects the business owner.
How much does it cost to open a safe?
It depends on the lock type, the safe's construction, whether drilling is needed, whether the lock must be repaired or replaced, and the time of day. We do not give a figure for a safe we have not seen, and we explain what applies to your case before work starts.
Can you come to me, or do I have to bring the safe in?
We come to you with our mobile vans for most jobs, since many safes are too heavy to move. Smaller safes or certain repairs may be easier at our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and we will tell you which makes sense.
Will you ask for proof that the safe is mine?
Yes. A safe is a high-stakes item, and a responsible locksmith should confirm ownership or authority before opening it. It protects you as much as anyone.
