Mercedes-Benz key replacement in North Hollywood

Wilshire Lock & Key replaces and programs Mercedes-Benz keys in North Hollywood with mobile service, 24/7, at (213) 577-1366. Older SmartKey (FBS3) cars are ones we can generally serve at the curb. Newer FBS4 cars are effectively dealer-only, and we will tell you that up front before you wait on us.

What do Mercedes-Benz owners in North Hollywood typically need?

North Hollywood is a majority-renter neighborhood, and that shapes how Mercedes key problems show up. Housing runs from 1920s-40s bungalows on interior streets, to a large stock of postwar apartment buildings, to newer mid-rise buildings around the North Hollywood Metro B/G Line station. A lot of the cars in those buildings are shared between partners or roommates, and keys get passed around, left in jacket pockets, and carried for years without anyone thinking about the battery.

The calls we get for Mercedes-Benz fall into a handful of patterns, and most of them come straight from how these key systems wear out:

  • A worn or failing electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) that no longer recognizes the key, or will not let it turn.
  • A steering-lock motor (ESL/ELV) failure on W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars. The dash wakes up but the key will not turn, which looks exactly like a bad key.
  • SmartKeys that have simply worn out after years of daily use and stopped syncing with the car.
  • Dead fob batteries. The remote buttons go first, then Keyless-Go cars start reporting 'key not detected.'
  • Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades.
  • A lost key on a newer FBS4 car, which is a different and slower problem that we cover below.

Where do Mercedes key problems actually happen around here?

Key trouble tends to find people where they park and walk away. In North Hollywood that means the car you leave near the North Hollywood Metro station and come back to after a day somewhere else. It means the car outside a theater or small venue in the NoHo Arts District after an evening out. It also means the quick stop along Lankershim or Magnolia Boulevard, or the lot at Valley Plaza or the NoHo West shopping center, where you realize the fob is gone or the key will not turn.

The other common spot is the one closest to home: the lot or street outside an apartment building. In a majority-renter neighborhood, plenty of people park on the street or in shared parking, so a failed key often means a stuck car in a place where you cannot simply leave it for a week. That is why we come to the car rather than asking you to bring it to us. If the problem is a lockout rather than a key replacement, our North Hollywood car lockout service covers that separately.

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

Mercedes is not a make where you want a locksmith who guesses. The first job is figuring out which key system your car has, because that decides whether we can do the work at the curb or whether you need the dealer. Here is how a call usually goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the year, model, and whether you still have one working key, a broken key, or nothing at all.
  2. We identify the key system from your VIN. FBS3 and FBS4 cars are handled very differently, and on some late-production cars the model year alone does not settle it.
  3. We confirm ownership. Expect to show your ID and proof the car is yours, such as registration or title.
  4. If your car is FBS3 and serviceable, we bring the van to the car. We read the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate the new key with professional tools. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis in an all-keys-lost situation, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is part of the job.
  5. We test everything before we leave: starting the car, locking and unlocking, the remote functions, and any spare key we made.
  6. If your car is FBS4, we say so plainly and explain the dealer route and what to expect, so you can plan instead of waiting for a van that cannot solve the problem.

What kind of key does your Mercedes use?

Every Mercedes in the data we work from uses an electronic SmartKey, not a conventional transponder key like you would find on a lot of other brands. That matters because there is no simple clone-able chip here. The key and the car talk to each other in a coded way, and a new key has to be properly introduced to the car.

The older system, roughly the late 1990s through about 2014, is called DAS3/FBS3. These are the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that you insert into the electronic ignition and twist. The key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared. This is the generation specialist locksmiths can work on.

Mercedes then moved to FBS4 on a model-by-model schedule rather than all at once. The facelifted W212 E-Class switched from April 2013 production. The CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) switched from November 2014. New platforms came with FBS4 from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), the 2015 C-Class (W205), the 2016 GLC (X253), and the 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

There is one gray area we want to be honest about. Most W166 ML and GLE models stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019. But Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So on those cars we do not assume. We confirm by VIN, in person if needed, before telling you what is possible.

What if you have lost every Mercedes key?

On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is still a job we can do. With the right tools we read the EIS/EZS, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key from scratch. The extra wrinkle is on W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis, where an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is needed to complete the work. We carry that into the job rather than finding out halfway through.

Before we commit to replacing a key, we also check that the key is really the problem. A failed steering-lock motor on those same chassis can make a perfectly good key refuse to turn, and a worn ignition can do the same. Making a new key does not fix either one, so we would rather tell you that than sell you a key you did not need.

On an FBS4 car the situation is different. A lost key means a pre-coded key ordered through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. In practice, the car, the paperwork, and the dealer all have to line up, and you should expect a multi-day wait. If you live in an apartment building without a second car, plan for how you will get around in the meantime. If you are still searching for the key, our page on lost car key replacement in North Hollywood covers what to do first.

Dealer or locksmith: which is the right call for a Mercedes?

It depends on the car, and anyone who tells you one answer fits every Mercedes is selling something.

For FBS3 cars, a specialist locksmith is a sound choice. We come to you, we do not need the car towed, and the work happens where the car is parked. That is a real convenience when the car is stuck in a lot near the Metro station or in front of your building.

For FBS4 cars, the dealer is effectively the only route for added or replacement keys. Keys are ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership. Some specialist FBS4 capability is starting to emerge, but it is not something we would ask you to count on, and we are not going to pretend otherwise. Mercedes also handles key security through its own dealer authorization process rather than the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands, which is another reason this is the dealer's territory.

What we can still do for FBS4 owners: help you work out what you actually have, tell you what paperwork to bring, and handle the pieces that do not need dealer coding, such as a cracked key shell or a worn emergency blade, where the situation allows. If we cannot do the job, we will say so on the phone.

What affects the cost of Mercedes-Benz key replacement?

We are not going to quote numbers in a web page, because the honest answer depends on specifics we have to confirm first. Here is what actually moves the cost:

  • FBS3 or FBS4. This is the biggest factor. FBS4 cars go through a VIN-coded dealer order, and what the dealer charges is outside our control.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a key when one still works is a lighter job than all keys lost, which requires the full read-and-generate process.
  • The chassis. W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 cars may need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator in an all-keys-lost job, which adds equipment and work.
  • The type of key. A Chrome key, a black SmartKey, and a Keyless-Go key are different parts.
  • Repair versus replacement. A cracked shell, worn buttons, or a broken blade is often a more economical route than a whole new key. A dead battery may be all that is wrong.
  • Diagnosis. If the real problem is the ignition or the steering-lock motor, the repair is different from a key job, and we sort that out first.
  • When and where. A call at an odd hour or a car in an out-of-the-way spot affects the job, since we answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes?

We have been in business since 1987. We have a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, and North Hollywood is one of 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties that we serve. The people who answer the phone are with the company that sends the van. There is no dispatch middleman reselling your call to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

One more thing worth knowing no matter whom you call. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start work, including us. A real company will not mind the question.

Our approach on Mercedes is simple: tell you what we can do and what we cannot, based on your actual car. If your key is a Mercedes-Benz key we can program, we get to work. If it is an FBS4 car that needs the dealer, we point you there instead of letting you wait on us for nothing.

Mercedes key service across North Hollywood

We serve all of North Hollywood, including ZIP codes 91601, 91602, 91605, and 91606. The neighborhood is about 14 miles from our base, and our vans cover it the same way they cover the rest of our service area.

Some of the places where people call us from: the NoHo Arts District, where the Television Academy and El Portal Theatre draw evening crowds and small venues keep cars parked after dark. The residential pockets of West Toluca Lake, Toluca Woods, and Toluca Terrace. The Valley Plaza area and Valley Plaza Park. The NoHo West area, the former Laurel Plaza site. And the stretches along Lankershim Boulevard and Magnolia Boulevard where errands turn into key trouble. We also get calls from people parked near North Hollywood Park and the Amelia Earhart Regional Library.

If your key problem is part of a bigger picture, such as a rental apartment with shared-entry hardware or a storefront on Lankershim, we handle that too. The valley's hot, dry summers mostly affect doors and frames, which expand in the heat, rather than car keys. Our main North Hollywood locksmith page lists everything we do in the area, and the car key replacement overview covers other makes.

What to have ready when you call

A few details make the first call much more useful, especially for a Mercedes, where the VIN does the real sorting.

  • The VIN, visible at the base of the windshield on the driver's side or on your registration.
  • Year and model, plus what kind of key you have now: Chrome key, black SmartKey, or push-button start.
  • Whether any working key exists, including a spare at home.
  • Photos of the dash if a warning message appears when you try to start the car.
  • Your ID and proof of ownership, since we will ask for them before making a key.
  • The exact spot where the car is parked, so the van can find it.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key on the spot in North Hollywood?

If your car uses the older FBS3 system, generally yes, at the curb with professional programming tools. If it is an FBS4 car, we cannot, and we will tell you on the phone. Those cars need a VIN-coded key ordered through Mercedes.

Which Mercedes models are dealer-only for keys?

FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models. That includes the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213), plus CLA/GLA from November 2014 and the facelifted W212 from April 2013 production.

My GLE is a late W166. Is it FBS3 or FBS4?

Most W166 ML/GLE stayed FBS3 through 2019, but Mercedes' own bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4. We confirm by VIN rather than guess.

My key will not turn but the dash lights up. Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering-lock motor does exactly this. A worn ignition can too. We check before replacing a key that may not be the problem.

My remote buttons stopped working. Is the key dead?

Often it is just the battery. Remote buttons usually fail first, and on Keyless-Go cars a weak battery leads to a 'key not detected' message. A battery swap is a more economical fix than a new key. If it does not help, the key may be worn out.

How long does an FBS4 key take from the dealer?

Expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN with proof of ownership, and the vehicle must be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled. Plan for transportation in the meantime.

What do I need to prove the car is mine?

Bring a photo ID and proof of ownership such as registration or title. We ask for it before making any key, and the dealer will too.

Can you add a spare if I still have one working Mercedes key?

On FBS3 cars, usually yes, and it is a lighter job than all keys lost. On FBS4 cars, even an added key goes through the dealer. See our key fob replacement page for fob-only issues.

Do you come to apartment buildings and street parking?

Yes. Our vans come to the car wherever it is parked in North Hollywood, whether that is a building lot, a street, or near the Metro station. Call (213) 577-1366 any time and tell us where you are, or use our contact page.

Is Wilshire Lock & Key licensed?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for theirs before work begins. Call us at (213) 577-1366 with questions about our paperwork.
