What do Toyota owners in Montebello usually need?

Most calls for a Toyota key in Montebello fall into a few groups: a spare that was never made, a key that finally wore out, a fob that stopped responding, a key locked inside the car, or no key at all. Which one you have decides the job, so it helps to know the situation before anyone starts cutting metal.

Where it happens follows how people live. If you're in one of the condo or apartment buildings along Garfield Avenue or Beverly Boulevard, your car is probably parked some distance from your door, so a lockout tends to start at the driver's door with the keys on the counter upstairs. Out toward the Montebello Hills, sloped lots and longer driveways put the car and the house farther apart, which matters when you're trying to remember whether the keys are inside. Around The Shops at Montebello and the Whittier Boulevard commercial strip, the usual story is a key set on a seat or in a bag and a door that shut behind you.

If the car is simply locked with the key inside, that is a lockout rather than a replacement, and we cover it on our Montebello car lockout page. If the key is gone, damaged or never existed as a spare, keep reading.

How does mobile Toyota key service work at the curb?

We bring the shop to the car. Our vans carry key blanks, remote and fob stock, a cutting machine and programming equipment, so the work happens wherever the Toyota is sitting: a driveway, a curb, a store lot. Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 21 miles from Montebello, and we'll be straight with you about timing when you call rather than promise a window we can't control.

A key is not finished until it has been tested in the door, the ignition or start button, and the remote. We don't hand it over before that.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the model, the year, and what happened: lost, broken, locked in, or never had a spare.
  2. Give us the VIN. It is on your registration, your insurance card, and the plate at the base of the windshield.
  3. We tell you what key your car uses and whether the job is one we can finish at the curb or one that belongs at the dealer.
  4. At the car, we check that you are the owner, with ID and a registration that match the vehicle.
  5. We cut the key and program it, usually through the OBD-II port, then test the door lock, the ignition or push-button start, and each remote button.
  6. If you're down to one key, we'll suggest adding a spare while we're already there.

Which Toyota key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Toyota changed its immobilizer systems several times, and the era your car belongs to decides how the key is made and programmed. In plain terms:

  • Late 1990s to roughly 2002-2004: the Texas 4C fixed-code chip.
  • Mid-2000s: the 40-bit 4D-67 chip, often called the 'dot' chip.
  • 2010-2011 phase-in: the 80-bit G chip, also listed as 4D-72.
  • From the 2013 RAV4, spreading through 2014-2016: the 128-bit H chip (DST-AES).
  • Smart and push-button cars: the 128-bit 8A family.
  • Newest models: 8A-BA fobs on 2021+ trucks and hybrids, and NXP Hitag-AES 4A keys on 2019+ Corolla smart keys, the 2023+ Prius running change, and the 2025+ Camry.

Why the model matters more than the year

Those dates are not the same on every model. Trucks and SUVs ran older chips years longer than sedans, so a Tacoma and a Camry from the same year can need different keys. We verify by model and generation, not by year alone. One honest caveat: a single catalog lists the same 4A family for the 2025+ Highlander, but we haven't corroborated it, so for that one we confirm by VIN before saying anything firm.

At the old end, most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras use plain mechanical keys with no programming at all, which is the simplest and lighter-cost kind of copy. Our Toyota key overview has more on the lineup, and if the fob rather than the key is your problem, see key fob replacement in Montebello.

What if I've lost every Toyota key?

It can be done on many Toyotas, but not all, and the answer depends on the year. We would rather tell you that on the phone than at your curb.

Most 2000s and 2010s Toyotas are programmed through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Aftermarket pro tools handle add-a-key on G-chip and H-chip cars that way, and there are documented all-keys-lost procedures for 2015+ H-chip bladed keys. Toyota's own immobilizer and smart-key reset bulletins, T-SB-0057-18 (1998-2023 models) and T-SB-0013-24 (2022-2024 models), both hosted by NHTSA, describe an all-keys-lost registration path through Techstream using a security pass-code that Toyota releases through a controlled process.

On roughly 2020+ smart-key vehicles, all-keys-lost work in the US generally needs Toyota server codes, which means credentialed locksmith access (LSID/NASTF VSP) to Toyota's information system. Tool support for the newest NXP-based keys, the 4A on 2023+ models and Hitag Pro listed for the 2026 RAV4, is still maturing, so for some of those cars the path may be dealer-only or specialist-only until it settles. If yours is one of them, we'll say so plainly instead of sending a van just to tell you.

The full process is on our lost car key replacement page.

What affects the cost of a Toyota key in Montebello?

We don't put numbers on a web page because the real figure depends on the car in front of us. Here is what moves it:

  • Key type. A plain mechanical key, a chip key, a flip key and a smart fob are very different products.
  • Model and generation. A G-chip sedan and a newer 8A smart-key hybrid don't need the same equipment.
  • Add-a-key versus all-keys-lost. Copying from a working key is simpler than starting from zero, which is why a spare made now is usually the more economical route.
  • How many keys you want, and whether you need remote buttons or only the ability to start the car.
  • The condition of the locks. A worn ignition or door lock can add work.
  • Time of day and travel. After-hours calls and the distance from our Westwood base are part of the picture.
  • Whether a dealer-controlled step, such as a Toyota-issued code, is required.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: which is the right call?

Both are legitimate, and sometimes the dealer is the right answer. For some of the newest smart-key Toyotas, especially 2023+ models on the newer NXP keys, the dealer may be the only route today. We'll tell you if that's your car.

Where we help is everything around that. With no working key, getting a car to a dealer can mean a tow and working around their hours. We come to the car at any hour, cut and program on the spot for the Toyotas we can do, and can usually add a spare in the same visit. For many 2000s and 2010s Toyotas that means less hassle and, with no tow involved, often less cost. Our overview of car key replacement in Montebello covers other makes too.

What Toyota key problems are most common?

Not every key problem needs a new key. Here is what we look for first:

  • The key sticks or stops turning in the ignition. On high-mileage 1990s-2000s vehicles this is often worn ignition wafers. Stop forcing it, because the lock may need attention along with the key.
  • The key won't turn the locks but the car still starts. The blade is worn while the chip still works, so the blade is the problem.
  • A smart fob and 'key not detected.' This is often a dead fob battery. The emergency blade usually still opens the door, so try a fresh battery first.
  • Cracked remote-head or flip-key shells, broken flip hinges, worn buttons. That's a fob repair or replacement job, not a lost-key emergency.
  • A hardware-store copy that opens the doors but won't start the engine. It was cut without a programmed transponder.
  • Intermittent starting with a cloned or aftermarket chip. Low-quality chips can fail on and off, and replacing one properly beats repeated retries.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key?

Wilshire Lock & Key has been in business since 1987, with David as owner and lead technician. We run a storefront in Westwood plus mobile vans, so a key can be made at the counter or at your curb. When you call (213) 577-1366, any hour of any day, you reach our own company, not a dispatch middleman who passes the job to whoever is free. David oversees the work. We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, Montebello among them.

One thing to do with any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask for it before anyone works on your car. It's a fair question and deserves a straight answer.

Toyota keys across Montebello and ZIP 90640

We cover all of Montebello, ZIP 90640. In North Montebello and the postwar tract streets north of Whittier Boulevard, if we're already there for a home rekey, ask about a spare Toyota key on the same visit. In South Montebello and the older central blocks, where 1920s Spanish-style bungalows stand, we also replace worn mid-century locksets, so house and car keys can be sorted out together.

Along the Garfield Avenue and Beverly Boulevard corridors, the apartment and condo buildings mean your Toyota may be parked a walk from your door. In the Town Center area near The Shops at Montebello and along the Whittier Boulevard strip, we also do retail lock service, storefront work and roll-up gate work. The Montebello Park area and the Montebello Hills area are covered the same way.

If you're stuck at Grant Rea Park, Montebello Golf Course, Whittier Narrows Recreation Area on the northeast edge, or near Adventist Health White Memorial Montebello, tell us the nearest cross street. Summers here run hotter than coastal LA, so say so on the phone right away if a child or pet is inside a locked car. For everything else we do locally, see locksmith service in Montebello, or contact us directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Toyota key if I've lost all of them?

On many Toyotas, yes, especially 2000s and 2010s models programmed through the OBD-II port. On roughly 2020+ smart-key cars, and the newest NXP-based keys, the path may need Toyota server codes or be dealer-only. Give us the VIN and we'll tell you honestly which applies.

How do I know if my Toyota needs a chip key?

Most Toyotas from the late 1990s onward have a transponder chip. Many pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras are the exception and use plain mechanical keys. Because trucks ran older chips longer than sedans, we confirm by model and VIN rather than guess from the year.

Will a locksmith-made key work as well as a dealer key?

When the right chip is properly programmed, it should work as intended. The trouble comes from low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently. We test the door, the start function and the remote before we leave, and we'll tell you if a dealer is the better route for your car.

My Toyota says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause, and the emergency blade inside the fob usually still opens the door. Replace the battery first. If it still fails, the fob may need replacement or reprogramming, which we can look at.

What do you need from me before making a key?

The VIN, plus proof you own the car: ID and a registration that match the vehicle. This protects you as much as us. If the car is parked at an apartment building and your paperwork is upstairs, tell us when you call so we can plan it.

Do you come to Montebello at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, seven days a week, year-round, and our mobile vans work Montebello at any hour. After-hours work can affect the price, but we'll explain how before we start.

How much does a Toyota key cost?

It depends on the key type, the model and generation, whether you have a working key to copy, how many keys you want, travel and time of day, and whether a dealer step is required. Give us the VIN and the situation and we'll lay out the full job before starting.

Can you make a spare before I lose my last key?

Yes, and it's usually the more economical route, since copying from a working key is simpler than all-keys-lost work. It also avoids the dealer-only cases that can affect some newer smart-key Toyotas. Call us and we'll confirm what your car needs.
