What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Monrovia usually need?
Where a Mercedes sits in Monrovia says a lot about how a key problem shows up. In the newer townhome developments around Station Square, near the Metro A Line, cars live in tight residential parking, and a dead fob or a lockout happens at the front door with a schedule waiting. Along Myrtle Avenue in Old Town and the Huntington Drive and Foothill Boulevard corridors, cars sit curbside or in a lot for a few hours, which is where a key left inside, or a fob that stops being detected, cuts a dinner or a shift short. In South Monrovia's apartment complexes, a SmartKey worn down by years of daily use is the kind of slow problem that can quit on a weekday morning.
Then there is Monrovia Canyon Park. A hiker comes back to the lot and the key is either locked in the car or no longer in a pocket. Those are two different problems. If you are locked out, start with our Monrovia car lockout service. If the key is truly gone or failing, the rest of this page is for you.
Here is what we typically handle for Mercedes owners:
- Added or replacement SmartKeys for FBS3-era cars, including when every key is lost
- Worn Chrome keys and SmartKeys that no longer sync with the car
- Fob batteries, cracked shells, worn buttons and broken emergency blades
- Working out whether the real problem is the key, or the ignition or steering lock
- Straight answers when the car is FBS4 and the dealer is the route
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
We bring the work to your car in Monrovia, which is about 29 miles from our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. Here is how a typical call goes.
- Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us the model, the approximate year, where the car is parked, and whether you still have any working key.
- We ask for the VIN, which is visible at the base of the windshield and on the door-jamb sticker. For later cars the VIN is how we tell FBS3 from FBS4, so we are not guessing from the model name.
- We tell you plainly, before a van is sent, whether this is curb work or a dealer order.
- If it is curb work, a mobile van comes to you in Monrovia. We explain on the phone how the drive from our Westwood base and the hour of the call figure into the job.
- Before we program anything, we ask for proof that the car is yours, such as ID and matching registration or title.
- We read the EIS/EZS ignition module, produce the key, and test it: starting, locking, remote buttons and the emergency blade.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key do you have? The eras in plain terms
Every Mercedes we deal with uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That matters because there is no simple chip to clone, the way there is on some other brands. What decides your options is which security generation the car uses.
The dividing line looks like this:
- Late 1990s to roughly 2014 (DAS3/FBS3): the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that goes into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. Key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared. These cars are serviceable by specialist locksmiths.
- FBS4, arriving on a model-by-model schedule: the facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production, CLA and GLA (117/156) from November 2014, and new platforms from launch, including the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253) and 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
- The gray area: most W166 ML/GLE stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4.
What if you have lost every Mercedes key?
All keys lost is the call people dread, and the honest answer depends on the era. On an FBS3 car, roughly 2000 to 2014, plus most GLE/W166 cars through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, it is fully workable. Professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites and Autel IM-series read the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key.
Some chassis add a step. The W204 C-Class, the W207, and the pre-facelift W212 E-Class need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator for an all-keys-lost job. That is extra equipment and time, and it is one reason two Mercedes can be quoted differently.
On an FBS4 car, a lost key is not a curb job. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait and plan for it. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but we would not tell you to count on it.
If you still hold one working key on an FBS3 car, making a spare now is usually the more economical route compared with an all-keys-lost job later. Our lost car key replacement in Monrovia page covers the general process.

Call (213) 577-1366Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: which is the right call?
It depends on the car, and sometimes the dealer is simply the answer. FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, are effectively dealer-only for added or replacement keys. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process rather than the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands. We will not pretend otherwise, and we will not send a van for work we cannot do.
For FBS3 cars, a mobile locksmith is often the simpler route: no tow, no waiting on a VIN order, and the work happens where the car is parked. If the car is a late W166, we confirm by VIN first. And if the dealer is your route, we can still help around it with a lockout while you wait, a battery for a key you still have, or a cracked shell.
What affects the cost of Mercedes-Benz key replacement in Monrovia?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the real figure depends on facts we only learn after a VIN and a few questions. These are the things that move it:
- Key generation: FBS3 and FBS4 are entirely different jobs, and FBS4 runs through Mercedes.
- Whether you have a working key: adding a spare is simpler than all keys lost.
- Chassis: W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 cars need a steering-lock emulator on all-keys-lost jobs.
- Key type: Chrome key, black SmartKey or a push-button key, and whether you need a new shell or only a battery.
- The car's electronics: if the EIS/EZS or steering-lock motor is failing, a new key is not the fix.
- Hour and distance: after-hours calls and the drive from Westwood can factor in, and we explain that on the phone.
Is it really the key? Problems that mimic a bad Mercedes key
A good share of 'my key stopped working' calls are not the key at all. These are the usual suspects:
- Electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor failure on the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class. The dash wakes up but the key will not turn, which looks exactly like a bad key.
- A failed or worn EIS/EZS, where the key is not recognized or will not turn.
- Dead fob batteries. Remote buttons die first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'.
- SmartKeys that have simply worn out after years of daily use and stop syncing.
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons and broken emergency blades.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes in Monrovia?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, serving 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. When you call (213) 577-1366, at any hour on any day, you reach the company that does the work, not a dispatch middleman reselling your call.
David, our owner and lead technician, oversees the work. We diagnose before we sell you a key, because cutting a new one for a failed steering lock wastes your money. Fob-only problems are covered on our key fob replacement in Monrovia page, and the full overview is at Monrovia car key replacement.
One more point worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before they touch your car, and that includes us.
Locked out or need a locksmith now?
We answer around the clock, every day of the year.
Call (213) 577-1366Mercedes keys across Monrovia: neighborhoods and the 91016 ZIP
Monrovia is covered by a single ZIP, 91016, and we serve all of it: Old Town Monrovia along Myrtle Avenue, the Monrovia Highlands, the Station Square area, the Huntington Drive and Foothill Boulevard corridors, South Monrovia, and the streets near Mayflower Village. Places like Library Park, Recreation Park and the Huntington Oaks Shopping Center are the kind of spots where you park, walk away, and find out your key is missing.
The housing shapes the setting for these calls. North of Foothill Boulevard are Victorian, Craftsman and early-1900s homes, with hillside houses climbing toward the Monrovia Highlands. South Monrovia is mostly smaller postwar houses and apartment buildings, and newer townhomes have risen around Station Square. Wherever you live, a Mercedes key problem lands in your driveway, a shared lot or a hillside street, and we come to where the car is.
The foothill climate brings hot summers and periodic Santa Ana winds, so a summer lockout at a canyon trailhead is not one to wait out. For more on the brand, see our Mercedes-Benz key guide, our Monrovia locksmith overview, or the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key in Monrovia without going to the dealer?
On FBS3-era cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 and most GLE/W166 cars through 2019, yes. On FBS4 cars, approximately 2015 onward, replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, and we tell you so on the phone.
How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Mercedes moved models to FBS4 on a rolling schedule, so year alone is not enough. Push-button start generally goes with FBS4. For late or borderline cars, we confirm by VIN or in person rather than assume.
Is a 2017 E-Class something you can program?
The 2017 E-Class (W213) used FBS4 from launch, so it is a dealer case. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN with proof of ownership. We will say that up front instead of sending a van.
My Mercedes key will not turn but the dash lights up. Is the key bad?
Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed ESL/ELV steering-lock motor mimics a bad key. We diagnose first, so you are not paying for a key you do not need.
Do you answer 24 hours a day for Mercedes key problems in Monrovia?
Yes, our phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, and we send mobile vans to you. Whether it is curb work or a dealer order is something we tell you at the start.
What do I need to show for a new Mercedes key?
Expect to show proof that the car is yours, such as ID and matching registration or title. Mercedes requires proof of ownership for dealer-ordered FBS4 keys too.
Does a dead fob battery mean I need a new key?
Often not. Remote buttons usually fade first, and Keyless-Go cars then report 'key not detected'. A battery is a much smaller job. If the shell is cracked or the key will not sync, we look at it from there.
