What does a lock rekey actually do?

Rekeying changes the inside of a lock so it works with a different key. Every pin-tumbler lock has a set of small pins in the cylinder. The old key lifts them to exactly the right height. When we rekey, we take the cylinder apart, swap in pins sized for a new key, and put it back together. The knob, deadbolt or handle on your door stays where it is. The key that opened it yesterday no longer does.

That is the whole point of the job. You are not buying new hardware, you are cutting off access. Whoever has a copy of the old key, whether it is a previous owner, a former tenant, a contractor, a house cleaner or a stranger who found a key ring on a beach, can no longer use it.

Rekeying is also how we put all the locks on a property on one key. If your front door, back slider, garage entry and side gate each take a different key, we can match them so one key runs the whole house. Ask for it when you call. It is the most common reason people say they want to rekey all house locks at once.

People search for this in different ways: rekey locks, lock rekeying, house rekey, rekey door locks, apartment lock rekey. They all describe the same basic service, scaled to the number of cylinders and the type of hardware involved.

When should you rekey locks in Malibu?

Rekeying makes sense whenever you cannot say with confidence who holds a working key. In Malibu, that comes up in a handful of recurring situations:

  • After moving in or buying a house. You do not know how many copies the previous owner, their agent, a housekeeper or a neighbor made. Rekeying locks after buying a house is the cleanest reset, and it is usually a small job compared with the cost of the purchase itself.
  • After a tenant moves out. Tenant turnover rekey is standard practice for landlords because a returned key does not prove no copy exists.
  • After losing keys. If keys disappeared at Surfrider Beach, a trailhead or a restaurant, rekeying removes the risk rather than hoping nobody connects the keys to your address.
  • After a contractor or rebuild crew finishes. Many Malibu homes have been rebuilt after wildfires, and a construction job can put a lot of keys into a lot of hands. Rekey once the work is done.
  • After a breakup, a falling-out with a roommate, or an employee leaving a business.
  • When a lock key sticks, but the lock is otherwise sound. Sometimes a fresh cylinder pin set and a new key solve it, although a worn lock may need repair or replacement instead.

How does a rekey visit work, step by step?

We keep the process simple so you know what is happening at your door. Here is how a typical visit goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers, day or night. Tell us the address, how many locks you want rekeyed, and the brand if you know it. A photo of the lock helps us bring the right parts.
  2. A mobile van comes to you. We are an actual storefront company on Wilshire Boulevard in Westwood, and the van carries what we need to work at your door rather than asking you to bring anything in.
  3. We confirm who you are and that you are entitled to change the locks. For a rental, that may mean a lease or owner confirmation. This protects you as much as anyone.
  4. We inspect each lock before touching it. If a lock is worn, corroded or badly installed, we tell you before starting and explain whether rekeying will hold up.
  5. We rekey the cylinders to a new key pattern and cut new keys. If you want every lock on one key, we set them up that way.
  6. We test every lock with the new key several times, with the door open and closed, and confirm the old key no longer turns anything.
  7. You get the new keys, and we walk you through anything you should know, such as which key goes to which door if some locks stayed separate.

How much does lock rekeying cost in Malibu?

We do not publish numbers on a web page because the real price depends on your doors, and a made-up figure would not help you. What we can do is tell you what moves the cost, so you can judge any quote you receive from us or anyone else.

The biggest factor is the number of cylinders. A single deadbolt is a small job. A house with a front door, back door, slider, garage entry, side gate and a few interior locks is a bigger one. Each cylinder takes work, and new keys have to be cut for each pattern.

Lock brand and grade matter too. Standard residential locks are generally quick to rekey. Higher-security or restricted-keyway locks may need special key blanks or factory involvement. Some are dealer-controlled, which affects both timing and cost, and we will say so plainly instead of pretending otherwise.

Condition matters. A clean lock rekeys cleanly. A lock that has been sitting in salt air for years may be seized or gritty, and that takes extra time or may point toward replacement.

Timing and travel also play in. A scheduled daytime visit is typically more economical than an urgent late-night call, and we are about 17 miles from our Westwood storefront, so the drive is part of the picture for Malibu addresses.

The lighter-cost route is almost always rekeying rather than replacing, provided the hardware is still in good shape. Call us with the details and we will explain your options before any work begins.

Should you rekey or replace? What salt air does to Malibu locks

Rekeying is the right answer when the hardware is sound and the only problem is who has keys. Replacing is the right answer when the hardware itself is failing. In Malibu, that second case is more common than inland, and it is worth understanding why.

The coast here has a persistent marine layer, fog and salt air. That corrodes locks, hinges and other exterior metal noticeably faster than it does inland. Damp conditions also swell wood doors, which can make a lock bind and feel faulty when the door or strike is really the issue.

So before we rekey, we look at the lock as a whole. If a deadbolt on an oceanfront home along Pacific Coast Highway has a pitted face, a gritty cylinder or a bolt that drags, spending money on rekeying hardware that is already on its way out does not make sense. In that case, we will talk through lock replacement, which swaps the hardware and gives you new keys in one visit.

If the lock is healthy, rekey it. If it is borderline, we will show you what we see and let you choose. Some customers rekey now and replace later; others prefer to do it all at once. Either is fair, as long as you know which one you are choosing.

Rekeying across Malibu: gated enclaves, canyons, beach houses and rebuilds

Malibu is a long, spread-out city, with ZIP codes 90265 and 90263 covering very different kinds of property. Rekeying looks different depending on where you live.

In Malibu Colony, a guard-gated community, a beach house may change hands or go to new renters while the gate and guard arrangement stays the same. Rekeying your own front door and slider does not touch that gate system, so the two are handled separately. We rekey your doors; gate access stays with whoever manages the community. The same applies to Serra Retreat, another gated enclave.

On Point Dume and Broad Beach, the story is often a beach house: a home that sees heavy use, seasonal guests, family members with spare keys, or house-sitters. Rekeying after a busy season is a routine way to reset who can come in.

Out in the canyons, including Latigo Canyon and Corral Canyon, estates sit on large lots with multiple outbuildings, side doors and gates. A big property can have a surprising number of keyed locks, and rekeying them all onto one key simplifies life considerably. If the driveway gate hardware itself is the problem, that is a separate matter for gate lock repair.

Paradise Cove and Point Dume Club both have long-standing mobile-home communities. The doors and locks on these homes differ from standard houses, so give us the lock brand or a photo when you call, and we will confirm what we can rekey before arriving.

Malibu has also seen repeated wildfires, including the 2018 Woolsey Fire and the January 2025 Palisades Fire on the city's eastern edge, so a meaningful number of homes here are recent rebuilds with new door and lock hardware. New hardware is usually good rekey material: nothing is worn, and the locks are fine. What is unknown is how many keys the builder, subcontractors and delivery crews have. A rekey when construction wraps up gives the owner a clean starting point.

Vacation rentals near Zuma Beach are another recurring case. Guests come and go, keys get taken home by accident, and owners want a reset between seasons or after a problem guest. Our vacation rental locksmith page covers that side of the work in more detail.

Rekeying for landlords, property managers and businesses

Tenant turnover is one of the most predictable reasons to rekey. Every time a tenant leaves, a landlord should treat any key that was issued as potentially copied. Rekeying between tenants is faster and more economical than replacing hardware, and it keeps all your units on a manageable set of keys. If you manage several properties, our page for locksmith services for landlords goes into how we handle turnover work, scheduling and key organization.

An apartment lock rekey follows the same logic as a house rekey, with a few extras: some buildings have common-door locks, mailroom doors or gates that belong to the building rather than the unit. Be clear about which locks you are authorized to change.

Commercial rekey and business lock rekey are the same craft with different priorities. When an employee leaves or a manager changes, shops and offices often want to rekey and keep the existing hardware. A storefront in the Malibu Country Mart or the Civic Center area, for example, may have a front door, a back door, a stockroom and an office, each with a different key. We can rekey them, and if you want a hierarchy where a manager's key opens everything but staff keys open only some doors, that is a master key system, which is built a little differently from a simple rekey. For broader business work, see our commercial locksmith page.

Not every commercial lock can be rekeyed on the spot. Some are restricted-keyway systems, and some are dealer-controlled. If that is yours, we will say so honestly and explain the path forward.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a rekey?

We have been in business since 1987, and rekeying is bread-and-butter work for a company that age. Here is what that means in practice:

  • We are one company. When you call (213) 577-1366, you are not reaching a call center that sells the job to whoever is closest. The people who answer are with us.
  • We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile vans. If you need extra keys cut or want to talk through a project face to face, there is an actual address.
  • David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. You are dealing with accountability, not an anonymous app.
  • We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Malibu is a regular part of our territory, not a stretch.
  • We answer 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. If you lost your keys at night and want the locks changed before you sleep, call.
  • We tell you when rekeying is the wrong answer. If hardware is corroded or failing, we say so and show you why.

What to check before you hire any locksmith

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services (BSIS), called a Locksmith Company (LCO) license. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins, and check it with the state if you want certainty. A legitimate company will not mind the question.

Also ask who will actually come to your door, whether the quote covers every lock you want done, and whether new keys are included. Be careful with anyone who will not discuss what drives the price or who insists on drilling a lock that could simply be rekeyed. If you ever need us after a lockout, we also handle emergency locksmith calls, but a rekey is usually a planned job you can set up at your convenience.

Frequently asked questions

Is rekeying the same as changing locks?

No. Rekeying keeps your existing lock hardware and changes only the internal pins and the key. Changing locks means removing the hardware and installing different locks. Rekeying is usually the more economical route when the locks are in good shape. If you want new hardware, see our page on changing locks.

Do I need to rekey after buying a house in Malibu?

We recommend it. You cannot know how many copies of the old keys exist, and sellers, agents, tenants, contractors and housekeepers may all have had them. Rekeying locks after buying a house takes the old keys out of circulation without replacing hardware that works.

Can you rekey all the locks in my house to one key?

Usually yes. If the locks are compatible brands and in good condition, we can rekey every door, slider and gate lock to the same key. Some locks, such as certain high-security or restricted types, may not match. We check when we inspect them.

How long does a rekey take?

It depends on how many cylinders you have and their condition. A single lock is quick, while a whole house with several doors takes longer. Corroded or stuck locks, which are common near the ocean, can slow things down. We will give you a realistic idea once we know what is on your property.

Will my old keys still work after a rekey?

No. That is the purpose. After rekeying, the old key cannot turn the lock, and we test that before we leave. Only the new keys work.

Can you rekey locks on a rental between tenants?

Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs we do. We will want confirmation that you own or manage the property. For repeated work across several units, we can help you set up a consistent system.

Can you rekey a lock if I lost every key?

In most cases, yes. If the lock is a standard residential type, we can rekey it without an existing key and cut new ones. If you are locked out as well, we can handle that visit too; see our house lockout service.

My deadbolt is rusty from the ocean air. Can it still be rekeyed?

Sometimes. If the lock turns smoothly and the cylinder is intact, rekeying works fine. If it is gritty, pitted or binding, replacement is usually the better use of your money. We will show you the condition and let you decide.

Do you rekey commercial doors in Malibu?

Yes. We rekey shop, office and storefront locks, and we can discuss master key setups if you need different access levels. Some commercial locks are restricted or dealer-controlled, and if yours is, we tell you at the outset.

How do I book a lock rekey in Malibu?

Call (213) 577-1366 at any hour. Tell us your address, how many locks, and the brand if you know it. You can also reach us through our contact page if you prefer to write.
