Drilling a clean bore for a new lockset in a wooden door

What does a proper lock installation involve in Malibu?

A new lock is only as good as the door it is fitted to. Most installation problems we see are not bad hardware. They are good hardware put into a door that was drilled slightly off, a strike plate set a hair out of line, or a latch that never allowed for a swollen door. The lock turns fine on the workbench, then drags, sticks or fails to latch once it is on the door.

Lock installation means choosing the right lock for the door and the way it is used, preparing the door properly, mounting the hardware square, setting the strike so the bolt throws fully into the frame, and testing the whole assembly with the door open, closed and under normal use. It is a different job from rekeying, which changes the inside of a lock you already own, and different again from replacing a failed lock one for one. If you are not sure which one you need, a short phone call sorts it out, and we will tell you plainly when a simpler fix will do the job.

Which type of lock installation do you need?

People search for door lock installation under many names, but the work falls into a handful of groups. Here is how we think about them when someone calls from Malibu.

  • Front door lock installation: the main entry hardware, usually a deadbolt plus a handle set or lever. Looks, security and the daily feel of the lock all matter on this door.
  • Residential lock installation: every door in the house that needs a lock, including side doors, garage-access doors, patio and sliding doors, often keyed so a single key works throughout.
  • Commercial lock installation: storefront, office and back-of-house doors, which may be aluminum, glass or steel and take far more daily traffic than a house door.
  • Security lock installation: higher-grade deadbolts, reinforced strike plates, longer mounting screws and restricted keyways for people who want more resistance to forced entry.
  • Mortise lock installation: a rectangular pocket cut into the door edge that holds the lock body, common on older homes and on higher-end doors.
  • Lever lock installation: lever handles in place of knobs, easier on the hands and a popular choice for modern and rebuilt homes.

How do we install a new lock, step by step?

Every door is a little different, but the sequence stays the same. It is the sequence that keeps a new lock from becoming a sticking, rattling annoyance six months later.

  1. Talk through the door and the goal. We ask what the door is made of, who needs keys, whether you want the new lock keyed to match others, and what bothers you about the current setup.
  2. Inspect the door, frame and hinges. We check that the door closes square and the hinges are tight. A strong lock in a weak frame is still a weak lock, and we would rather tell you that before we start.
  3. Choose the hardware. We match door thickness, backset, handing, finish and function, whether that is a keyed entry, a privacy set or a passage set with no key at all.
  4. Prepare the door. Where new holes or edge cuts are needed, we use templates rather than eyeballing it, protect the finish around the work, and seal any bare wood we expose.
  5. Mount the lock and set the strike. We fasten everything, align the latch and bolt with the frame, and set the strike so the door closes without being pulled or lifted into place.
  6. Reinforce where the door allows. That usually means longer screws that reach the framing behind the strike and, on security installs, a heavier strike plate.
  7. Test and hand over. We cycle the lock many times with the door open and closed, try every key, show you how it works, and leave you with the keys and a clear idea of how to look after it.

Why do mortise and lever lock installations need extra care?

A mortise lock sits in a deep pocket cut into the edge of the door. Cut it too wide or too deep and you weaken the door stile, the very part of the door that holds everything together. On older doors we often find an existing mortise pocket, and the decision is whether to rebuild or swap the lock body inside the same opening, or to prepare the door for a different type of lock. Matching the new body and cylinder to the old pocket, and to the trim you want to see on the outside, takes patience rather than speed.

Lever lock installation looks simple, but levers have a direction. A lever has to be set for the correct hand of the door, and the return spring has to be strong enough that the handle does not droop over time. A lever that sags a little every day looks careless and wears the latch faster. We set the handing, check the spring action and make sure the lever returns cleanly every time.

Neither of these is a job to rush at the front door of a home or the entry of a shop. If you have a door that is out of the ordinary, such as a solid timber door, a custom pivot door or a glass storefront, tell us when you call so that we arrive ready for it.

How much does lock installation cost in Malibu?

We do not quote a figure on a web page, because the same phrase, new lock, covers very different jobs. What we can do is explain what moves the cost, so the quote you get makes sense when you hear it.

  • The lock itself: grade, brand, finish and function all matter. A basic passage set and a high-grade mortise entry set are not in the same category.
  • How many doors: several doors keyed alike are usually more economical per door than a string of separate visits.
  • How much door preparation is needed: a door that already has the right holes is quicker than one that needs new bores, edge cuts or a mortise pocket.
  • Door and frame condition: a warped door, a split frame or a loose hinge may need repair so that the new lock works properly.
  • Finish and exposure: oceanfront doors often call for more corrosion-resistant hardware, which can change the price of the lock.
  • Keying: keyed-alike sets, restricted keyways and extra keys all add to the job.
  • Time and distance: after-hours calls and travel to your address are part of the quote. Malibu is roughly 17 miles from our Westwood storefront.

How does Malibu's salt air change how we install locks?

Malibu has a true coastal microclimate. The marine layer and fog bring salt onto exterior metal, and locks, hinges and strike plates corrode noticeably faster here than they do inland. Damp conditions also swell wood doors, which changes how much clearance a latch and bolt have through the seasons. A lock installed the same way it would be in an inland valley can start to bind within a couple of years in Malibu.

On oceanfront homes along Pacific Coast Highway, and in beachside areas such as Carbon Beach, Broad Beach and Malibu Colony, we talk about finish before we talk about brand. Solid brass and stainless steel hardware, or finishes made for harsh outdoor conditions, usually hold up far better than thin plated metal. We use stainless fasteners where we can, so screws do not leave rust streaks down a good door, and we leave enough clearance at the latch edge that a door swelling in damp weather still closes cleanly.

A common call here is replacing a corroded deadbolt along with the hinges that have rusted beside it. When we are already replacing one piece of exterior hardware, it often makes sense to look at the others, because a new lock hung on a tired hinge will not sit properly for long. For a stronger entry, our high-security lock options are worth discussing, and we can explain what each one does and does not protect against.

What about rebuilt homes, canyon estates and rentals in Malibu?

Wildfires have reshaped parts of Malibu, including the 2018 Woolsey Fire and the January 2025 Palisades Fire on the city's eastern edge. A meaningful share of homes along the eastern Malibu coast are rebuilds with brand-new doors, which means whole-house lock installation: front door sets, side doors, patio doors and garage-access doors, ideally all keyed to the same system. If you are rebuilding in 90265 or 90263, tell us how many doors you have, and we can plan one visit around your construction schedule rather than piecemeal trips.

Canyon properties off Latigo Canyon and Corral Canyon roads, and gated communities like Serra Retreat, bring their own questions. Long driveways and gate codes mean we need access arranged before we arrive, so mention that when you call. The Santa Ana winds that push through the canyon mouths also make sealed, tight-fitting doors worth the extra care at installation.

Point Dume and Paradise Cove include long-standing mobile-home communities, where doors can differ from standard house doors in thickness and preparation. We measure rather than assume. For owners near Zuma Beach who rent a property short-term, a keyed-alike or keypad setup makes guest changeovers simpler, and our vacation rental locksmith page covers that side of the work. For shops at Malibu Country Mart and the Civic Center area, commercial door hardware is the related service.

  • We have a real storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, plus mobile service vans that come to you.

  • David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, so there is someone accountable for how the job turns out.
  • Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366.
  • Our mobile locksmith service means the installation happens at your door, with the tools and hardware to deal with surprises.

What should you ask any locksmith before they install a lock?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that license number before the work begins, and be wary of anyone who dodges the question. We encourage you to ask us as well.

A few other things are worth asking. Ask what lock and finish they are proposing and why. Ask whether the door and frame need any repair for the lock to work. Ask whether the quote covers keys, strike reinforcement and any door preparation, so there are no surprises at the end. A good installer answers all of that in plain language, and it is how we run our own jobs.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a lock installation take?

It depends on the door. A standard door that already has the right holes is a short visit. A door that needs new bores, edge cuts or a mortise pocket takes longer, and several doors take longer still. When you call we will describe the door and give you a realistic idea before we arrive.

Can you install a lock on a door that has no lock hole?

Yes. We prepare the door with templates, cut the holes cleanly, and seal any bare wood we expose. If the door is hollow, thin or damaged, we will explain what that means for the lock before we drill anything.

Should I buy the lock myself or let you supply it?

Either works. We can supply and fit hardware chosen for your door and exposure, or install a lock you have already bought after checking that it suits the door thickness, handing and backset. We would rather check first than discover a mismatch halfway through.

Which locks hold up best near the ocean?

Solid brass and stainless steel hardware, or finishes made for harsh outdoor conditions, generally last longer in salt air than thin plated metal. Nothing is immune to Malibu's marine layer, so regular wiping and occasional servicing still help. We can recommend options for your door when you call.

Do you install locks at night or on weekends?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round at (213) 577-1366. If a door will not secure after a break-in or a failed lock, tell us that up front, because it changes how we prioritize the visit.

Can you install commercial locks for a shop or office in Malibu?

Yes. Commercial lock installation covers storefront doors, back-of-house doors and office entries, and the hardware has to match the door type, whether that is wood, steel, aluminum or glass. Tell us what the door is made of and how busy it gets.

What is the difference between lock installation and lock replacement?

Installation means fitting a lock to a door that is new, newly prepared or has no suitable lock. Replacement means taking out an existing lock and fitting a new one in the same place. The work overlaps, but installation can include preparing the door and setting a new strike.

Can you key all the new locks in my rebuilt home to one key?

In most cases, yes. Keyed-alike sets are common on whole-house installations, and they are usually simpler to manage than a pile of different keys. Tell us how many doors there are, and whether any should have a different key, such as a guest house or garage.

Will you come to a gated or canyon property?

Yes, we travel to properties across Malibu, including gated and canyon addresses. Arrange gate codes or an entry contact before we arrive, and mention any long driveway or tricky access when you call so the visit goes smoothly.
