What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Malibu typically need?

Most Mercedes key calls from Malibu follow the way people live here. Beachfront homes sit packed along Pacific Coast Highway, canyon estates sit on large lots up roads like Latigo and Corral Canyon, and the Zuma Beach area fills with rental guests and weekend visitors. Keys travel with people onto sand, into the water, and between a house and a car at odd hours. That is where keys get lost, locked inside, or worn out.

These are the Mercedes key problems we see described most often:

  • A SmartKey that has worn out after years of daily use and no longer syncs with the car
  • A dead fob battery: the remote buttons fail first, then Keyless-Go cars start reporting 'key not detected'
  • A cracked Chrome-key shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade
  • A key that will not turn, which can be the electronic ignition or the steering lock rather than the key itself
  • A lost key, or every key lost, which is a very different job depending on the generation of the car

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

Mobile service means the work happens where the car is: a driveway in Malibu West, a curb near Malibu Country Mart, a rental property near Zuma Beach. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 17 miles from Malibu, plus mobile service vans, so the call goes to one company and not to a dispatch middleman.

Here is how a typical visit goes. If you are locked out rather than missing a key, that is its own service, covered on our Malibu car lockout page.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers at any hour. Tell us the year and model, and whether the car has a key slot or a push-button start.
  2. We work out which key system the car uses. Year and model usually narrow it down, and for late-production cars we confirm by VIN instead of assuming.
  3. We tell you plainly whether the job is one we can complete at the car or one that has to go through the Mercedes dealer. You decide with that information in hand.
  4. If it is a job we can do, we bring the tools to the car, read the electronic ignition over infrared or OBD, and calculate the key password.
  5. We generate and program the new key, then test the ignition, the locks and every remote button before we hand it over.
  6. Have your registration or title and a photo ID ready. Mercedes itself requires proof of ownership for dealer-ordered keys, and it is a sensible thing to have on hand either way.

Which Mercedes key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes in our data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That matters, because there is no simple clone-able chip here the way there is on some other brands. The key and the car talk to each other, and the system generation decides who can make you a new key.

From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used what is called the DAS3/FBS3 system. The key is the familiar infrared Chrome key or black SmartKey that slides into the electronic ignition and twists. The key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared. These cars are fully serviceable by specialist locksmiths.

Mercedes then moved to FBS4 on a model-by-model schedule. The facelifted W212 E-Class switched from April 2013 production. The CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) switched from November 2014. New platforms arrived with FBS4 from launch: the 2014 S-Class (W222), the 2015 C-Class (W205), the 2016 GLC (X253) and the 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and the keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

The gray area is the W166 ML and GLE. Most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. So with a late ML or GLE we confirm by VIN. We do not guess, because the answer changes who can make your key.

What happens if you have lost every Mercedes key?

Honest answer: it depends entirely on the generation. On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is routine work for a specialist. We read the electronic ignition module, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and the pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a steering-lock emulator (ESL/ELV) is needed as part of the job, so we plan for that when we identify the car.

On an FBS4 car, the picture is different and we will say so up front. Added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only. The key is ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. That means the car has to get to the dealer, and you should expect a multi-day wait.

Limited specialist capability on FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something we would ask you to count on. If your car is FBS4, the useful thing we can do is tell you quickly so you can start the dealer order instead of waiting on us. Our lost car key replacement page for Malibu covers the general process for any make.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Malibu?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the real answer depends on the car in front of us. These are the factors that move the cost of a Mercedes key job:

  • The key system: FBS3 work we can do ourselves, while FBS4 means a dealer order that carries its own costs and its own timeline
  • Whether you have a working key or none. Copying from a working key is usually the more economical route compared with all keys lost
  • Whether a steering-lock emulator is needed, which applies to the W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212
  • What kind of key you need: a basic replacement, a fob with new buttons, or just a new shell or battery
  • Where and when the car is. A mobile visit to a canyon road at night is a different trip than a daytime visit, and we will tell you how that factors in
  • Whether the problem is the key at all. If the ignition or steering-lock motor has failed, a new key will not fix it, and we would rather diagnose that first than sell you a key you do not need

Dealer or locksmith: which is the fair choice?

Neither is always right, and we would rather say that than pretend. For an FBS4 car, the dealer is where the key comes from. There is no way around it for added or replacement keys, and we will not tell you otherwise. For an FBS3 car, a specialist locksmith can usually do the same work at the car, without a tow to a service department.

The practical differences are mostly about logistics. A dealer order for an FBS4 key involves proof of ownership, getting the car there, and a multi-day wait. A mobile visit for an FBS3 key happens at your location. If you are in Point Dume or up a canyon, not having to move the car matters.

Not sure which category you are in? Call us with the year, model and VIN, and we will tell you. The Mercedes-Benz key page has more on the brand, and our general car key page covers other makes.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes key?

We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. You get a storefront in Westwood and mobile vans, and the person who answers the phone works for the same company that shows up. There is no dispatch middleman.

One thing worth knowing about any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you are entitled to ask to see it. Ask us, and ask anyone else you call. Also be wary of anyone who promises to make an FBS4 key at the curb without asking for your VIN.

Mercedes-Benz key service across Malibu

Malibu is long and narrow, and getting from one end to the other takes planning. We serve ZIP codes 90265 and 90263, from the beachfront stretch of Pacific Coast Highway to the canyon roads above it. Neighborhoods we cover include Malibu Colony, Point Dume, Serra Retreat, Paradise Cove, Broad Beach, Big Rock, Latigo Canyon and Trancas Canyon.

Gated places like Serra Retreat and the guard-gated Malibu Colony are worth a note: when you call, tell us about gate codes or guest procedures so we are not stuck at the entrance. The same goes for canyon estates off Latigo and Corral Canyon roads, where a clear address and a description of where the car is parked saves time.

The coastal climate is a real factor here. Marine layer, fog and salt air corrode locks, hinges and exterior metal noticeably faster than inland, and damp conditions swell wood doors. We do not claim that salt air killed your fob, but a car living on the coast is a car whose owner may also be dealing with a sticky house lock. Many homes along the eastern coast have been rebuilt after wildfires with new hardware, which means new house keys alongside your car keys. See our Malibu locksmith page for home and business work, or our Malibu car key replacement page for other makes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key at my location in Malibu?

For FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 plus most GLE/W166 models through 2019, yes. We come to the car with professional tools. For FBS4 cars, around 2015 onward and earlier on some models, replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, and we will tell you that before you spend anything.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Year and model get us close, but some models changed mid-production, especially the W212 E-Class and the W166 ML/GLE. For those we confirm by VIN. Call (213) 577-1366 with your VIN and we will tell you which system the car uses.

What if my Mercedes is FBS4 and I lost the only key?

The key has to be ordered from Mercedes, pre-coded to your VIN, with proof of ownership. The car must also be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled. Expect a multi-day wait, and plan for transportation and alternative ways to get around.

Is my Mercedes key not turning a key problem?

Not always. A failed electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) can stop the key being recognized. On the W204 C-Class and W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed steering-lock motor can make the dash wake up while the key will not turn. We diagnose before replacing a key that may be fine.

My remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a new key?

Often it is the battery, which is the simplest fix. Remote buttons usually die first, and on Keyless-Go cars the next sign is a 'key not detected' message. If the buttons are worn or the shell is cracked, a new shell or fob may be the answer. See our key fob replacement page for Malibu.

Do you work on Mercedes keys at night or on weekends?

Yes. Our phone line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. What we can do at the car depends on the key system, but you will reach a person at any hour.

What should I have ready when I call?

The year, model and VIN if you can read it from the windshield or door jamb, your location in Malibu including any gate information, and whether you have any working key. Have your registration or title and ID ready too, since proof of ownership is needed for keys.

How much will it cost?

It depends on the key system, whether you have a working key, whether a steering-lock emulator is needed, the type of key, and where the car is. We explain those factors on the call and will tell you what applies to your car before any work begins.
