What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Lawndale usually need?
Lawndale is a compact city, and the cars here live the way the housing does. Much of it is modest 1940s-1950s single-family homes on small lots, many with rear units or converted garages, and garden-style apartment buildings and small complexes line Hawthorne Boulevard and the other major corridors. When a garage has become living space, the Mercedes sits in the driveway, at the curb, or in a shared apartment lot. That is where most of the key trouble we hear about begins.
A Mercedes owner here usually calls for one of a handful of reasons. Some are what they look like, and some are not:
Vehicle lockouts near the El Camino College commuter area are a pattern we plan for: someone parks for the day and a key ends up on the wrong side of a locked door. A lockout is a different job from a replacement key, and our Lawndale car lockout service covers it. This page is about getting a Mercedes key made, repaired, or re-synced, and the first thing that decides everything is which key system your car uses.
- A key locked inside the car, often in an apartment lot along Hawthorne or after parking near campus.
- A worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing after years of daily use, or a Chrome key with a cracked shell, worn buttons, or a broken emergency blade.
- A dead fob battery. The remote buttons die first, and on Keyless-Go cars the dash then reports that the key is not detected.
- A key that goes in but will not turn. Sometimes it is the key; on certain C-Class and E-Class models it is the electronic steering lock.
- A lost key, either with a spare still in a drawer or with no key at all.
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
Our vans come to the car. In Lawndale that means a driveway, a residential curb, or an apartment lot, and the work is done where the car is parked. Lawndale is about 16 miles from our storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, and the phone is answered around the clock at (213) 577-1366. Here is how a Mercedes call normally goes:
If the car turns out to be FBS4, we say so on the phone before anyone drives out. Sending a van for work only a dealer can do would waste your time.
- You call and tell us the model, the year, and what is happening: lost key, broken key, key locked in, or key will not turn.
- We ask for the VIN, which you can read through the windshield or copy from your registration. The VIN is how we settle whether the car is FBS3 or FBS4.
- If the car is FBS3, a technician comes to your location and checks your ID and proof of ownership before any key is made.
- The technician reads the EIS/EZS electronic ignition over infrared or through the OBD port, calculates the key password online, and generates the new key with professional tools.
- We test the key in the ignition, test the remote functions, and talk through whether a spare makes sense.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key era is your car? FBS3 and FBS4 in plain terms
Every Mercedes we work on uses an electronic SmartKey, not a conventional transponder key. There is no chip to clone the way there is on a Toyota. The key and the car trade rolling codes, and the system generation decides who can make you a key.
The practical catch is that model year alone can mislead. An E-Class built in 2013 depends on whether it was built before or after April 2013 production, and late W166 cars are settled by VIN, not assumed.
- FBS3, from the late 1990s through roughly 2014: the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. Key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared.
- FBS4, rolled in model by model: the facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production, the CLA and GLA (models 117/156) from November 2014, and new platforms from launch, meaning the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213).
- FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
- The W166 ML/GLE mostly stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes fallback-process bulletin (S-B-80.57/62e) lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. We confirm those by VIN.
What goes wrong with Mercedes keys besides a lost key?
Many calls that sound like a bad key are really something else, and sorting that out first can save you from buying a key you did not need. These are the faults we see most often on these cars:
The steering-lock problem catches people out. The dash wakes up, everything looks normal, and the key will not turn. It mimics a bad key, but the motor in the steering lock has failed. A new key will not fix that, so we check the lock before we cut anything. If all you need is a fresh battery or a repaired shell, our key fob replacement service in Lawndale is the place to start.
- Failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition: the key is not recognized or will not turn.
- Electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor failure on the W204 C-Class and on the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class.
- SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use.
- Dead fob batteries, where the remote buttons die first and Keyless-Go cars then report 'key not detected'.
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades.
What if every Mercedes key is lost?
On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is a job we do. The professional tools we use, including Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and Autel IM-series, read the EIS/EZS over infrared or OBD, calculate the key password online, and generate new keys with no original in hand. On the W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is also needed, which is one more reason we ask for the VIN first.
On an FBS4 car, we will not pretend. Keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled, so expect a multi-day wait. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but it is not something to count on, and we would rather tell you now than string you along.
If you still have one working key on an FBS4 car, treat it carefully and think about a spare before something happens to it. For the full picture of what we do when keys are gone, see our lost car key replacement page for Lawndale.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Lawndale?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because two Mercedes that look alike can sit on opposite sides of the FBS3/FBS4 line. What moves the cost is specific and worth knowing before you call:
- The system generation. An FBS3 car we can handle on site is a different job from an FBS4 car that goes through a VIN-coded dealer order.
- Whether you are adding a spare or have lost every key. All keys lost takes more work than copying from a working key.
- Whether a steering-lock emulator is needed, as on the W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212.
- The key type: Chrome key, black SmartKey, or a push-button fob, and whether a shell repair or battery solves the problem instead of a new key.
- How many keys you want made in one visit.
- The hour of the call and how far the van travels. Lawndale is about 16 miles from our Westwood base.
- Whether the actual fault is the key, the ignition, or the steering lock, since the repair differs.
Dealer or locksmith: which makes sense for your Mercedes?
The honest answer depends on the car. For FBS3 cars, a specialist locksmith is usually the more economical route, and we come to you, so the car does not need to be towed or driven anywhere. That matters most when the car will not start or the key is gone entirely.
For FBS4 cars, the dealer is the route. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process, not the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands, and replacement keys come pre-coded to the VIN. Bring proof of ownership and plan for a wait of several days. We can still help with related problems, such as a lockout, a dead battery in a fob, or working out whether your car is FBS3 or FBS4 before you spend money in the wrong place.
You will find the wider picture on our Mercedes-Benz key page and across all makes at car keys.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes key?
We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you reach us, not a dispatch middleman who sells your job to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith for it before they start on your car. A company that hesitates to answer is telling you something.

Call (213) 577-1366Mercedes-Benz key service across Lawndale, ZIP 90260
We cover the whole city. That includes the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor, with its garden-style apartment buildings, the Inglewood Avenue, Redondo Beach Boulevard, and Artesia Boulevard corridors, and the blocks near El Camino Village and near Alondra Park. Calls from ZIP 90260 are handled the same way: VIN first, then a van to wherever the car is parked.
Landmarks help us find you quickly. The Hawthorne Blvd and Redondo Beach Blvd intersection, Lawndale Civic Center, Lawndale Library, Leuzinger High School, and the lots beside El Camino College and Alondra Community Regional Park are all easy reference points when you are standing next to a locked or dead car.
Lawndale sits a few miles inland on the coastal plain, inside the marine layer belt but far enough from the surf that salt-air corrosion is modest. The same damp mornings and summer heat that make older wood doors swell and stick in the city's postwar houses are a house problem more than a key problem. If you are calling about the car and the bungalow door is giving you trouble too, mention it. Our Lawndale locksmith page covers home and storefront work, and our Lawndale car key replacement overview covers other makes. You can also reach us through the contact page.

Frequently asked questions
Can you make a Mercedes key in Lawndale if I have no original key?
On FBS3 cars, yes. We read the EIS/EZS over infrared or OBD, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key, including when all keys are lost. On FBS4 cars, no: those keys are ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership.
How do you know whether my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
By VIN. Model year is only a rough guide, since facelifted W212 E-Class cars changed over in April 2013 production, CLA and GLA cars from November 2014, and some W166 ML/GLE cars from July 2013 production may be FBS4. We confirm in person or from the VIN instead of guessing.
My 2016 GLC key is lost. Can you help?
The GLC (X253) used FBS4 from launch, so replacement keys go through Mercedes as a VIN-coded order with proof of ownership, and you should expect a multi-day wait. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but we do not tell customers to count on it.
The key goes in my C-Class but will not turn. Is the key bad?
Not necessarily. On the W204 C-Class, and on the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed steering-lock motor (ESL/ELV) can leave the dash awake and the key stuck, which looks like a bad key. We check the lock before replacing anything.
My remote works, but the car says key not detected. What is wrong?
A weak fob battery is the usual first suspect on Keyless-Go cars. Remote buttons tend to die first, then the car stops detecting the key. If a new battery does not fix it, the SmartKey may be worn and need re-syncing or replacing.
Can a cracked Chrome key shell or broken blade be fixed?
Often, yes. Cracked shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades are common on older Chrome keys. Whether a shell repair or a new key is the lighter-cost option depends on the condition of the internals, so we look at the key first.
Do I need proof of ownership?
Yes. We check ID and proof of ownership before making a key. For FBS4 cars, Mercedes requires proof of ownership as well when you order from the dealer.
Is a locksmith required to be licensed in California?
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for the number before work starts on your car.
Do you only come out for lost keys?
No. We also handle worn SmartKeys that no longer sync, fob battery problems, damaged Chrome-key shells, and diagnosing whether the real fault is the ignition or the steering lock. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour and tell us what the car is doing.
