What do Mercedes-Benz owners in La Mirada usually need?
Mercedes key calls tend to sort into a few groups: a spare made before the only key disappears, a worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing, a fob with a dead battery, a cracked shell or broken emergency blade on an older key, a lockout, or a car with no working key at all. The right fix depends almost entirely on which key system your car has, so the first questions we ask are the model, the year, and, for newer cars, the VIN.
La Mirada makes that sorting easy to picture. The city was master-planned and largely built out in the 1950s, and single-story ranch tract homes dominate. Condominium and townhome communities add HOA-managed stock with controlled-access entries, and homes toward the Puente Hills on the east side tend to be newer and larger than the original tracts. Whatever the house looks like, the car is usually in a driveway, a garage, or at the curb, and that is exactly where we do the work.
Where do Mercedes key problems actually happen around La Mirada?
Lockouts and key failures follow where people park and how they live. Around Biola University, student housing and rentals mean shared driveways, street parking, and keys that get passed between roommates and family. A Mercedes locked with the key inside, or a key that finally stops syncing after years of daily use, fits that setting well.
Retail centers along Imperial Highway and Valley View Avenue produce a different version: a car in a big shopping lot, a key set down in a bag or a cart, and a Keyless-Go car that reports 'key not detected' once the fob battery fades. On the residential side, HOA townhome communities near La Mirada Regional Park often have controlled-access entries, so mention the gate or call box when you phone and we can plan how to reach the car.
In the older tracts off Rosecrans Avenue, a home sale tends to start a round of 'what else needs new keys?' thinking. The house gets rekeyed, and owners remember the car's spare is floating around too. If your Mercedes is simply locked and you need in, our La Mirada car lockout service page covers that job on its own.
How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?
We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile vans, and La Mirada is about 29 miles from that base. We bring the equipment to your car instead of asking you to tow it anywhere. Here is the sequence.
Everything on that list happens in your driveway or the parking lot. For the wider picture on the brand, see our Mercedes-Benz key page.
- You call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Give us the model, year, the VIN if you can read it through the windshield, your location, and how many working keys you still have.
- We tell you plainly whether your car has a system we can handle in the field or one that goes through Mercedes. If it is dealer-only, we say so on the phone rather than send a van to find out.
- At the car, we confirm you own it, with registration and ID that match the vehicle.
- On FBS3 cars we connect professional tools such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, or Autel IM-series equipment, read the electronic ignition over infrared or OBD, and calculate the key password online.
- We generate and program the new key. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis, an all-keys-lost job also needs an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator.
- We test the key in the ignition, the remote buttons, and the emergency blade, and you see it all working before we pack up.

Call (213) 577-1366Which Mercedes key era does your car belong to?
Every Mercedes we deal with uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That matters, because there is no clone-able chip in the Toyota sense. The key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared. The useful split is between two generations of the system:
Model year alone is not always enough to place a car, which is why we ask for the VIN before promising anything. If you are unsure what you are holding, tell us what the key looks like and whether the car starts with a twist or a push button.
- FBS3, from the late 1990s through roughly 2014: the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. Specialist locksmiths can service these cars.
- FBS4, arriving on a rolling, per-model schedule: the facelifted W212 E-Class from April 2013 production, CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156) from November 2014, and new platforms from launch, namely the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213). FBS4 cars generally pair with push-button start, and their keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.
- The gray zone: most W166 ML/GLE cars stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes fallback-process bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. We confirm those by VIN instead of assuming.
What if you have lost every Mercedes key?
All keys lost is where the era matters most. On an FBS3 car, it is a workable job for a specialist. We read the electronic ignition, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key. On W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis we add an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator to the job. You should not need a tow to the dealer for that.
On an FBS4 car, the honest answer is different. Replacement keys are effectively dealer-only. They are ordered pre-coded to your VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled. Expect a multi-day wait, and plan around it. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but it is not something we would ask you to count on.
If you are in that situation, we can still help with the parts that are ours: getting into the car if it is locked, working out which system you actually have, and pointing you to the right next step. Keep your registration or title and your ID handy, because the dealer order needs proof of ownership. Our lost car key replacement page walks through the general process.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in La Mirada?
We do not put numbers on a web page, because the real cost depends on the car in front of us. These are the factors that move it:
If the true problem is a worn ignition or a failed steering-lock motor, a new key will not fix anything, and we would rather diagnose that first than sell you a key that does not help. We give you the quote before work starts. The lighter-cost option is often something small, like a battery or a replacement shell, so tell us what is actually happening. Our key fob replacement page covers those smaller jobs.
- Key system: FBS3 jobs are done in the field with our tools, while FBS4 jobs run through Mercedes with its own ordering process and pricing.
- Whether you still have a working key: adding a key is a lighter job than all keys lost, which means reading the ignition and calculating a password from scratch.
- Steering-lock emulator: on W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis, an all-keys-lost job needs an ESL/ELV emulator, which adds parts and labor.
- Key type: Chrome key, black SmartKey, or Keyless-Go style fob, and whether it needs a new shell or only a battery.
- Number of keys: programming a spare while we are already there is usually the more economical route than a second visit.
- Timing and distance: a late-night call to a driveway differs from a daytime appointment, and La Mirada sits about 29 miles from our Westwood base.
Dealer or locksmith: which is the fairer call for a Mercedes?
It depends on the car, and we will not pretend otherwise. For an FBS4 Mercedes, approximately 2015 onward and earlier on some models, the dealer route is effectively the only one for an added or replacement key. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process rather than the NASTF/SDRM route familiar from domestic brands. If your car is FBS4, we will say so instead of sending a van on a trip that cannot succeed.
For an FBS3 car, a mobile locksmith is usually the more economical route and the more convenient one, because the work happens where the car already sits and no tow is involved. A dealer can do that work too. The difference is where the car has to go and how the visit is scheduled.
When a car is borderline, such as a later W166 ML or GLE, the VIN settles it. That check is a phone call, and it saves everyone from guessing.

Call (213) 577-1366What commonly goes wrong with Mercedes keys and ignitions?
Not every 'bad key' is actually a bad key. These are the patterns worth knowing:
The second item catches people out. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering lock can wake the dash while the key refuses to turn, which looks exactly like a worn key. We check the car before programming anything.
- A failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition, so the key is not recognized or will not turn.
- Electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor failure on the cars named above.
- SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use.
- Dead fob batteries: remote buttons die first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected'.
- Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades.
- On FBS4 cars, a lost key means a VIN-coded dealer order with proof of ownership and a multi-day wait, so budget for it.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes in La Mirada?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We are a real storefront with mobile vans, not a call center. When you phone (213) 577-1366, any hour of any day, you are reaching our company, with no dispatch middlemen passing your job to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.
One more point worth knowing about any locksmith: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask for the license number from whoever you hire, before work begins. If you want to talk through your car first, contact us or call, and we will tell you straight which route fits.
Which parts of La Mirada do we cover, and what is the ZIP?
We work throughout La Mirada, ZIP 90638. That includes the Biola University area, the Civic Center and La Mirada Theatre area, Hillsborough and the Knolls at Hillsborough area, the Foster Road corridor, the Santa Gertrudes Avenue corridor, the Imperial Highway corridor, the Creek Park area, and the stretch near La Mirada Regional Park. The La Mirada Landmark adult condominium community and East La Mirada, the adjacent unincorporated area, are part of the picture too. If you are parked near the La Mirada Theatre for the Performing Arts, Splash! La Mirada Regional Aquatics Center, the La Mirada Golf Course, or Neff Park and Historical Museum, we can come to the lot.
Inland La Mirada runs a few degrees warmer in summer than neighboring Gateway Cities, with negligible salt-air exposure. Seasonal heat can also swell wood entry doors in the older tracts, so if a sticking front door is on your list too, mention it when you call. Frequently asked questions
Can you program a Mercedes-Benz key at my home in La Mirada?
For FBS3 cars, yes, our mobile vans do that at your driveway or parking lot. For FBS4 cars, replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, and we say so on the phone. Call (213) 577-1366 with your model, year, and VIN.
How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?
Roughly 2014 and earlier is FBS3, with a key that inserts and twists. Newer platforms such as the 2014 S-Class, 2015 C-Class, 2016 GLC, and 2017 E-Class are FBS4. Borderline cars, like later ML/GLE models, are confirmed by VIN.
Do you handle all keys lost on an older C-Class or E-Class?
On FBS3 cars, yes. We read the ignition, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key. W204 C-Class, W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis also need an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator for that job.
Why does the dash light up but my Mercedes key will not turn?
It may not be the key. A failed electronic steering lock on W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars mimics a bad key. We diagnose first, so you do not pay for a key that will not solve the problem.
How long does the dealer take for a lost FBS4 key?
Expect a multi-day wait. The key is ordered pre-coded to your VIN with proof of ownership, and the car must be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled. We will not give you a hopeful guess.
What do I need to show before you make a key?
Registration or title and a matching ID, so we can confirm you own the car. Have the VIN ready as well, since it tells us which key system your Mercedes uses.
My Mercedes says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?
Often the fob battery is dead, which is the lighter-cost fix. If a fresh battery does not help, the key may be worn and out of sync. Our car key replacement team can sort out which it is.
Does my GLE or ML need the dealer?
Most W166 ML/GLE cars stayed FBS3 through 2019, but Mercedes lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4. We confirm by VIN before telling you which route applies.
