What do Toyota owners in Hawthorne typically need?

Most Toyota key calls here come down to a handful of ordinary situations: a spare that was never made, a key lost somewhere between work and home, a fob that has stopped responding, or a key that opens the doors but will not start the engine. Where the problem happens matters as much as what the problem is, so here is how it tends to play out around Hawthorne.

Along Hawthorne Boulevard and the other commercial corridors, a lot of people live in dingbat-style apartment buildings. The car may sit at the curb or in a space beside the building, and a lockout there is often two problems at once: you cannot get into the car, and you are not sure whether the keys are upstairs, in your pocket on the other side of town, or lost. We can help with the car side of that, and we will work out which situation you are in before anything gets cut or programmed.

In the postwar stucco tracts of Hollyglen and Bodger Park, cars usually live in driveways or on the street out front. The usual calls there are a worn key that has started to stick, a spare that was never made, or a hardware-store copy that opens the door but does nothing in the ignition.

If you work in the industrial district around Hawthorne Municipal Airport and SpaceX, your car may sit in a work lot for a full shift. A key lost during the day is a different kind of call: you may not be able to retrace your steps, and you need the car moving at the end of the day. And at ThreeSixty at South Bay, the newer gated townhomes mean we may need gate access arranged before we pull up.

How does mobile Toyota key service work at the curb?

Our vans are equipped to cut and program keys where the car is parked, so you do not need to tow a Toyota anywhere when the job can be done on site. Here is the sequence we follow, and it is the same whether the car is in a driveway off a Hollyglen street or at the curb on Hawthorne Boulevard.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366. The line is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. Tell us the model, the model year, how many working keys you have left, and what happened.
  2. We tell you what we can and cannot do for that specific Toyota. If the car is one where the key path may be dealer-only or specialist-only, you hear that on the phone, not after we arrive.
  3. We explain what will drive the cost for your situation before we head out, so there are no surprises at the curb.
  4. A technician drives to you from our Westwood base, about 15 miles away, in a van carrying key blanks, cutting equipment and programming tools.
  5. On arrival we confirm the car is yours by checking your ID against the registration or title. We do this for every vehicle, and it protects you as much as it protects us.
  6. We identify the correct key for the car using the VIN and the vehicle itself, cut the blade, and program the transponder or smart key to the car.
  7. We test everything before we leave: door locks, trunk, ignition or push-button start, and each remote button. You hand over the old key if you have one, and we make sure every key you now own actually works.

Which Toyota key do you have? The eras in plain terms

Toyota has changed its key technology several times, and which era your car falls into decides how the job is done. These are the general eras. Exact boundaries vary by model and generation, and the trucks and SUVs ran older chips years longer than the sedans, so we confirm by VIN rather than by guessing from the year alone.

  • Late 1990s to roughly 2002-2004: Texas 4C fixed-code chips, the earliest transponder keys on Toyotas.
  • Mid-2000s: the 40-bit 4D-67 chip, often called the dot chip.
  • Phasing in over 2010-2011: the 80-bit G chip, also called 4D-72.
  • From the 2013 RAV4 and spreading through 2014-2016: the 128-bit H chip (DST-AES).
  • Smart and push-button systems: the 128-bit 8A family, with the newest trucks and hybrids from 2021 moving to 8A-BA fobs.
  • Newer NXP Hitag-AES 4A keys: 2019 and later Corolla smart keys, a 2023 running change on the Prius, and the 2025 Camry. The same 4A family is listed for the 2025 Highlander in a single catalog we have not yet corroborated, so on that one we confirm by VIN and in person before promising anything.
  • At the old end: most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras use plain mechanical keys with no transponder and no programming at all.

What if you have lost every Toyota key?

All-keys-lost is the situation people dread, and the honest answer is that it depends on the car's age and key system.

For most 2000s and 2010s Toyotas, programming happens through the OBD-II port with professional equipment. Toyota's own immobilizer and smart-key reset bulletins, T-SB-0057-18 for 1998-2023 models and T-SB-0013-24 for 2022-2024 models, both hosted by NHTSA, describe an all-keys-lost registration path through Techstream using a security pass-code obtained through Toyota's controlled process. Aftermarket professional tools can add a key on G-chip and H-chip cars through the OBD port, and there are documented all-keys-lost procedures for 2015 and later H-chip bladed keys.

On roughly 2020 and newer smart-key Toyotas, US all-keys-lost work generally requires Toyota server codes, which means locksmith credentials (LSID/NASTF VSP) and access to Toyota's information system. Tool support for the very newest NXP-based keys, the 4A family on 2023 and later models and the Hitag Pro key listed for the 2026 RAV4, is still maturing. For some of those cars the path may be dealer-only or specialist-only until the tools catch up.

What we will not do is tell you over the phone that it is all simple. We ask for the VIN, check what the car needs, and tell you straight whether we can do it at the curb or whether the dealer is the realistic route. If your car is an older Tacoma or Tundra with a plain mechanical key, the news is usually much better. For the broader picture, see our page on lost car key replacement in Hawthorne.

What about dead fobs, worn keys and cracked shells?

Not every Toyota key problem means a new key. Some of the calls we see are fixable without replacing anything, and we would rather tell you that than sell you something you do not need. These are the common ones:

  • A dead smart-fob battery. The car says key not detected, but the emergency blade inside the fob still opens the door. Often the fix is a battery, not a new fob.
  • A worn key blade. The transponder chip still works, but the blade no longer turns the locks. A fresh blade cut to the original code and paired with a good chip can solve it.
  • Worn ignition lock wafers on high-mileage 1990s and 2000s vehicles. The key sticks or stops turning, and the lock itself needs attention, not just the key.
  • Cracked remote-head and flip-key shells, broken flip hinges and worn buttons. Depending on the key, the electronics can sometimes move into a new shell.
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder. They open the doors but will not start the engine.
  • Low-quality cloned or aftermarket chips that fail intermittently. If a key works one day and not the next, this is a common cause.

How much does Toyota key replacement cost in Hawthorne?

We do not publish a flat number, because the same phrase, Toyota key, covers everything from a plain mechanical blade to a push-button smart key on a new hybrid. What moves the cost is specific and explainable:

  • The key system. A mechanical key is a very different job from a G-chip or H-chip transponder, which is different again from a smart key.
  • Whether you have a working key. Adding a spare is usually the more economical route compared with all-keys-lost, which takes more equipment and more steps.
  • The key itself: a basic transponder key, a remote-head key, a flip key, or a smart fob each cost differently as parts.
  • Access to Toyota's codes. On newer smart-key cars, the credentialed server access needed for all-keys-lost work adds to the job.
  • Time and place. Late-night and weekend calls are different from a scheduled daytime appointment, and some parking situations, such as gated lots, take more coordination.
  • Extra repairs. If the ignition cylinder is worn or the existing key is damaged, there may be additional work beyond the new key.

Dealer or mobile locksmith: which makes sense for a Toyota?

Both are legitimate, and which is better depends on your car. A dealer has direct access to Toyota's systems, which matters on the newest smart-key models where tool support for locksmiths is still catching up. If your Toyota is a recent model and we tell you the dealer is the more realistic option, we mean it.

For the large middle of the range, the 2000s through 2010s cars and many newer ones, a mobile locksmith can usually do the same work where the car sits. That means no tow, no waiting for an appointment, and no leaving the car overnight. If you are stuck in a driveway in Hollyglen or at the curb on Hawthorne Boulevard, avoiding a tow is often the biggest practical difference.

Our suggestion: call us first. We will tell you whether the job is one we can do at your car, and if the answer is dealer, you will have saved a trip. Our Toyota key page and the wider car key guide explain more of the differences.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your Toyota?

We have been in business since 1987. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, and one company handles your call, your visit and your follow-up. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your job to whoever is free.

David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work. The phone is answered around the clock, so a lost key at an odd hour reaches a person who can work through your situation.

One more point worth knowing: California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company license, known as an LCO. Ask any locksmith for that number before they start work on your car. If you want to check how we operate or ask anything first, contact us or call (213) 577-1366.

Toyota key service across Hawthorne neighborhoods

Hawthorne is a compact city, ZIP code 90250, and we cover all of it. About 15 miles from our Westwood base, it is a regular stop for our vans.

In Hollyglen and Bodger Park, the housing is mostly postwar stucco tracts, with cars in driveways or on the street. Moneta Gardens, Ramona and North Hawthorne call for the same kind of curbside work. Around the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor, apartment-building lockouts are the usual scenario, and you may need our car lockout service before any key is replaced. In the industrial area near Hawthorne Municipal Airport and SpaceX, workplace parking lots are the setting. And at ThreeSixty at South Bay, the newer gated townhomes need a quick conversation about gate access first. We also serve Del Aire, just next door and unincorporated.

Marine-layer mornings here are mild, and the weather has little effect on locks and keys, so the issues we see are about wear, batteries and lost keys, not climate damage. For more on what we do in the city, see locksmith services in Hawthorne, our Hawthorne car key replacement overview, and our page on key fob replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Toyota key in Hawthorne if I have no original key?

Often yes, but it depends on the car. Most 2000s and 2010s Toyotas can be handled through the OBD-II port. Newer smart-key models, especially 2020 and later, may need Toyota server codes, and some of the very newest may be dealer-only for now. Call (213) 577-1366 with the VIN and we will tell you which path applies.

Do I have to tow my Toyota to a dealer to get a new key?

Not in most cases. Our vans come to you and program keys at the curb for many Toyota models. The exceptions are certain newer smart-key cars where the dealer is the realistic option, and we say so up front.

Will a cheap hardware-store copy start my Toyota?

Only if the car has no transponder. Hardware-store copies cut without a chip will open the doors but will not start a transponder Toyota. Mechanical-key models, such as most pre-2005 Tacomas and pre-2003 Tundras, are the exception.

My Toyota says key not detected. Do I need a new fob?

Not necessarily. A dead battery in the fob is a common cause, and the emergency blade inside the fob should still open the door. Try a fresh battery first. If it still fails, the fob or the car's receiver may need attention.

Can you program keys for a 2025 Camry or Highlander?

The 2025 Camry uses an NXP Hitag-AES 4A key. The 4A family is also listed for the 2025 Highlander in a catalog we have not yet corroborated. Tool support for these keys is still maturing, so we confirm by VIN before saying yes or no.

What do I need to show before you make a key?

Photo ID and proof the car is yours, such as registration or title. We match them to the vehicle. It is a standard step and it protects you if someone else ever tries to get a key to your car.

Is the locksmith company licensed?

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS locksmith company license, called an LCO. Ask any locksmith for their license number before work begins and expect a straight answer.

Can you help if I am locked out and also need a new key?

Yes. We handle both in one visit when possible. Start with the lockout service, get into the car, then discuss whether a spare or replacement key makes sense. Call (213) 577-1366 any hour.
