What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Hawthorne usually need?

Most Mercedes-Benz calls from Hawthorne fall into a few groups: a key that stopped working, a key that was lost, a fob with a dead battery, or a car locked with the key inside. The story matters less than the year and chassis of the car. Mercedes changed its key security system partway through the 2010s, and the two systems are handled very differently. A 2011 E-Class and a 2016 GLC can both be 'a Mercedes that needs a key,' and the honest answer for each is not the same.

Where it happens matters too. Hawthorne is mostly postwar 1940s–1960s stucco single-family tracts in neighborhoods like Hollyglen and Bodger Park, with dingbat-style apartment buildings along Hawthorne Boulevard and other commercial corridors. Apartment residents often park on the street or in whatever shared parking the building offers, so a key dropped between the car and the front door, a fob left in a jacket, or a spare nobody can find becomes a curbside problem. Single-family owners more often call from the driveway or the curb in front of the house, usually after the only working key has quit.

Hawthorne also has a working side: the industrial district around Hawthorne Municipal Airport (Jack Northrop Field) and SpaceX headquarters. Anyone who drives in for a shift and parks for the day can end up needing help in a work lot instead of at home. For older-model key work we come to the car, wherever it is parked, so you are not paying to haul it somewhere first.

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 15 miles from Hawthorne, and our mobile vans do the field work. The person who answers the phone at (213) 577-1366 is part of the same company that sends the van, so there is no dispatch middleman guessing at your car. Here is how a typical call goes.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366, any hour. Tell us the model, the year, what happened (lost, broken, not recognized, locked in), and where the car is parked.
  2. We sort the car into the older FBS3 group or the newer FBS4 group. For late-build cars where the year alone does not settle it, we confirm by VIN rather than assume.
  3. We ask for proof of ownership, such as your ID and the vehicle registration, before any key is made or ordered.
  4. If the car is FBS3, we read the electronic ignition (EIS/EZS) over infrared or the OBD port, calculate the key password online, and generate a new key with professional tools. On some chassis a steering-lock emulator is part of the job.
  5. We test the new key: ignition, remote functions, and any Keyless-Go behavior the car has, before we call the job finished.
  6. If the car is FBS4, we say so plainly and explain the dealer route: what to bring, what the dealer will need, and what to expect while you wait.

Which Mercedes-Benz key do you have? Key eras in plain terms

Every Mercedes in our data uses an electronic SmartKey rather than a conventional transponder key. That is the first thing to understand, because it means there is no simple clone-able chip the way there is on some other brands. The key and the car talk to each other, and a new key has to be made to the car, not copied from another key.

The older era runs from the late 1990s through roughly 2014 and is called FBS3 (the ignition side is DAS3). The key is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or black SmartKey that inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. The key and the car exchange rolling codes over infrared. The newer era is FBS4, which Mercedes rolled out model by model, and those cars generally pair with standard push-button start. FBS4 keys are coded to the VIN at the factory.

  • Facelifted W212 E-Class: FBS4 from April 2013 production.
  • CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156): FBS4 from November 2014.
  • Launched as FBS4: the 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253), and 2017 E-Class (W213).
  • W166 ML/GLE: most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but Mercedes' own fallback-process bulletin (S-B-80.57/62e) lists model 166 from July 2013 production among cars that can be FBS4. For those, we confirm by VIN and do not guess.
  • As a rough rule, 2015 and newer should be treated as FBS4 until the VIN says otherwise, and some models switched earlier.

What if you have lost every Mercedes-Benz key?

This is the call that worries people most, and the answer depends entirely on the era. On an FBS3 car, all-keys-lost is still serviceable by a specialist locksmith. The professional tools in this work, such as Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites, and the Autel IM-series, read the ignition module, the key password is calculated online, and a new key is generated. On the W204 C-Class, the W207, and pre-facelift W212 E-Class chassis, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is also needed. That adds a step, but it is routine for a shop that does this work.

On an FBS4 car we have to be straight with you: added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only. The key is ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes, with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled, so the car has to be part of that process. Expect a multi-day wait, not a same-day fix. Limited specialist FBS4 capability is emerging, but it is not something we would ask you to count on.

If you are in that situation, the most useful thing we can do is tell you quickly so you can start the dealer order instead of losing a day. Our lost car key replacement in Hawthorne page walks through the general process for any make, and the Mercedes-Benz key information page has more on the brand.

Why does a bad ignition or steering lock look like a bad key?

Before anyone pays for a new key, it is worth knowing that several Mercedes problems feel like a key failure when the key is fine. We see these often enough that we check for them first.

Replacing a key that is not actually the problem wastes money and time, so part of our job is diagnosis. If the key is not the cause, we will say so.

  • Failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition: the car does not recognize the key, or the key will not turn.
  • Electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor failure on the W204 C-Class and on the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class: the dash wakes up, but the key will not turn, which mimics a bad key.
  • SmartKeys that wear out and stop syncing after years of daily use.
  • Dead fob batteries: remote buttons fade first, then Keyless-Go cars report 'key not detected.' Try a fresh battery before assuming the key is dead.
  • Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades, which are physical wear rather than electronic failure.
  • On FBS4 cars, a lost key means a VIN-coded dealer order with proof of ownership and a multi-day wait, so budget time for it.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes-Benz key in Hawthorne?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the range between a battery swap and a full lost-key job on a locked-down newer car is wide. Here is what actually moves the cost, so you can see why a phone quote depends on a few questions.

  • The key system: FBS3 work can be done by us at the car. FBS4 work is a dealer order, and the cost structure is the dealer's.
  • Spare key versus all keys lost: adding a key to a car that still has a working one is usually the more economical route than rebuilding access from nothing.
  • Whether the car needs an ESL/ELV emulator, which applies to certain W204, W207, and pre-facelift W212 chassis.
  • The type of key: an older Chrome key, a SmartKey, or a Keyless-Go key all differ in parts and in what the programming involves.
  • Whether the problem is really the key, or the ignition, the steering lock, or just a fob battery.
  • Time of day and location: after-hours calls and where the car is parked can affect how a visit is scheduled and priced.
  • For FBS4 cars, the indirect costs of a multi-day wait, including how you get around in the meantime.

Dealer or locksmith: which is the fair choice?

Neither is always right, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. For FBS3 Mercedes, a specialist locksmith is a sound choice and often the more economical route, because the work happens at your car and you avoid transport and a dealer queue. For FBS4 cars, the dealer is the realistic route for added or replacement keys, because the key has to be ordered pre-coded to the VIN and the car registered in Xentry.

Our approach is to tell you which group your car is in before any work starts. If it is dealer-only, we will say so on the phone instead of sending a van to find out. If you are not sure of your car's era, especially a late W166 ML/GLE, we confirm by VIN.

If you want a broader look at replacement options for any make in town, see our car key replacement service in Hawthorne. If the issue is a remote that stopped working rather than a missing key, the key fob replacement page for Hawthorne is the better starting point.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes?

We have been in business since 1987, with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Los Angeles and mobile vans that serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. It is one company: the phone is answered at (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year, and the work is done by our own technicians under the oversight of David, the owner and lead technician.

California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith, us included, for their license information before work begins. For a Mercedes, ask one more question: whether they will confirm FBS3 or FBS4 first. A shop that cannot answer that is guessing.

Mercedes-Benz key help around Hawthorne and ZIP 90250

Hawthorne's ZIP code is 90250, and our service covers the whole city. The neighborhoods we work in include Hollyglen, Bodger Park, Moneta Gardens, Ramona, North Hawthorne, and ThreeSixty at South Bay, plus adjacent Del Aire, which is unincorporated.

In the older tract streets of Hollyglen and Bodger Park, a Mercedes is usually parked in a driveway or at the curb in front of a stucco single-family home, which makes the job straightforward for us. Along Hawthorne Boulevard, where dingbat-style apartment buildings are concentrated, the car may be on the street or in shared parking, and lockouts there are a common reason for a call. At ThreeSixty at South Bay, a newer gated townhome community on the west side, access can depend on HOA gate hardware, so give us the details when you call and we will plan the visit around it.

Hawthorne has mild marine-layer mornings year-round, and effects on locks are modest, so do not blame the weather for a failing key. Daily wear is the likelier cause. If your car is locked with the key inside, our Hawthorne car lockout service has its own page. For city-wide service information, see Hawthorne locksmith services, or browse our car key guides for other makes. If you would rather write than call, use the contact page.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key at my Hawthorne home or workplace?

For FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 to 2014 and most W166 ML/GLE models through 2019 (confirmed by VIN), yes. We bring the equipment to the car, wherever it is parked. For FBS4 cars, added or replacement keys are effectively dealer-only, and we will tell you that on the phone.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

Year and model give a good first answer. The facelifted W212 E-Class moved to FBS4 from April 2013 production, the CLA and GLA from November 2014, and the W222, W205, X253, and W213 launched as FBS4. Late W166 cars can go either way, so we confirm by VIN. FBS4 cars generally have push-button start.

Can you just copy my Mercedes key?

Not in the sense of cloning a chip. Mercedes SmartKeys exchange rolling codes with the car, so a new key is generated and matched to the car using professional tools. That is why it helps to know the era of the car before anyone starts work.

I lost my only key to a newer Mercedes. What happens?

If it is an FBS4 car, the key is ordered from Mercedes pre-coded to your VIN, with proof of ownership, and the car must be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before the key can be enabled. Expect a multi-day wait. We will confirm the era first so you do not waste time.

My car says 'key not detected.' Do I need a new key?

Not necessarily. A dead fob battery is a common cause on Keyless-Go cars, and the remote buttons usually weaken first. If a fresh battery does not help, the key may be worn or the problem may be in the car. See our key fob replacement page for more.

The dash lights up but the key will not turn. Is the key bad?

It may not be. On the W204 C-Class and the W207 and pre-facelift W212 E-Class, a failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor produces exactly this symptom. A failed EIS/EZS ignition can also cause it. We diagnose before replacing anything.

What do you need from me before you make a key?

Proof of ownership, such as your ID and the vehicle registration, and the VIN. Mercedes handles key security through its own dealer authorization process, and we follow the same principle for locksmith work: no key without confirming the car is yours.

Do you work on Mercedes outside normal hours?

The phone at (213) 577-1366 is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round. FBS3 work can be done at the car whenever you call. FBS4 dealer orders depend on the dealer's schedule, and we will explain that when you call.
