Why do Hawaiian Gardens households and businesses need duplicate keys?
Most key copy requests start small. A new roommate moves in, a landlord needs a set for an incoming tenant, a shift manager wants a spare for closing, or someone realizes the only mailbox key lives on a ring that goes everywhere with them. Hawaiian Gardens produces this kind of everyday key traffic constantly. The city packs mostly small post-war single-family homes, duplexes and modest apartment complexes into roughly one square mile, so a lot of people share doors, gates and mailboxes at close quarters.
A duplicate sounds simple, and when it is done well it is. The new key has to lift every pin in the lock to the same shear line the original does. What decides that is the quality of the blank, the condition of the key you hand over, and how carefully the cutter is set up. A copy made from a worn copy drifts a little further from the factory cut each generation, which is why many 'my spare doesn't work' complaints trace back to a third- or fourth-generation key rather than a bad lock.
This page covers house key copies, spare house keys, apartment key copies, duplicate deadbolt keys, mailbox keys, office and commercial key duplication, and the high security and restricted keys that need extra steps. If your real problem is a lost key, a lockout or a lock that needs rethinking, we will say so and point you to the right service instead of cutting a key that will not solve it.
How does our key cutting service work, step by step?
Whether the key is for a front door or a filing cabinet, the process is the same. What changes is how much checking each step needs.
- Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what the key opens, any brand name stamped on the head, and how many copies you want. A photo of both sides of the key helps.
- We pick the route with you: a van visit, or bringing the key to our Westwood storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd. We tell you which one makes more sense for your situation.
- We inspect the original for wear, bends, cracks and rounded cuts. If it is too worn to copy reliably, we say so before cutting anything.
- We match the blank to the keyway, length and shoulder or stop position. A blank that looks right but sits a hair off cuts a key that almost works, which is the most irritating kind.
- We cut the copy and remove the burrs so the key does not shed brass shavings into your lock.
- We test the copy in the lock itself whenever we are on site, turning it repeatedly in both directions, and we check that the original still runs smoothly too.

Call (213) 577-1366Which keys can we copy, and which need extra steps?
Not every key is a ten-second job on a basic machine. Here is how the common types break down, including the ones where we have to be honest about limits.
- House and duplicate deadbolt keys: usually straightforward. Many homes use one keyway on the knob and another on the deadbolt, so bring every key you want copied rather than assuming one fits both.
- Apartment keys: unit keys are routine to copy. A key stamped 'Do Not Duplicate' is a request from whoever issued it, not something that physically stops a cutter, but we still ask about your authority to copy it, and for building-controlled keys we may ask for the property manager's okay.
- Mailbox keys: small, easy to cut, and easy to lose. Some banked mailbox locks are controlled by the post office or the property manager, and if yours is, the route may run through them or through mailbox lock replacement.
- Office and commercial keys: staff copies are common, but keys that belong to a larger hierarchy should be copied only with the owner's approval. If your building has no hierarchy and keys are multiplying, a master key system is the cleaner fix.
- High security keys: sidebar, dimple and other patterned keys need specific blanks and machines. Some can be copied here; others are only available through the manufacturer. See our page on high security locks for how those systems work.
- Restricted keyways: these are controlled on purpose. We need an authorization card or proof that you are the registered owner, and the blank may have to be ordered. We do not cut around a restriction.
- Car keys with chips: a transponder key is a different job from a plain brass copy. Whether yours can be cloned or must be programmed depends on the make, model and year, and some vehicles are dealer-only. We confirm by VIN or in person rather than guess. Start with car key replacement for that route.
How much does key duplication cost in Hawaiian Gardens?
A plain house key copy is normally the lighter-cost job we do, and a patterned or restricted key is normally the heavier one. We will not quote a figure on a web page because it would be wrong for half the people reading it. We explain what applies to your key before any work starts, so the number is not a surprise.
- Key type: a standard brass key, a high security key and a restricted key sit in very different places because the blanks and cutting equipment differ.
- Blank availability: common blanks are on the shelf, while unusual ones may have to be sourced.
- Quantity: a few copies from the same original usually cost less per key than separate trips.
- Authorization: restricted systems add paperwork and sometimes manufacturer involvement.
- Condition of the original: a badly worn key may need to be cut by code or from the lock, which is more work than tracing a good key.
- Route and timing: a van visit costs more to run than a counter transaction, and distance matters. Hawaiian Gardens is about 30 miles from our base, and late-night calls are priced differently from daytime ones.

Call (213) 577-1366Should you choose mobile key duplication or come to the shop?
If you have one ordinary house key and an easy afternoon, bringing it to our Westwood storefront is usually the more economical route. Mobile key duplication makes sense in a different set of cases: you need several keys cut for a household or small business, the key has to be tested in the lock it belongs to, you cannot leave a key that is the only one you have, or you simply cannot get across town.
The van carries blanks and cutting equipment for common keys, so a lot of copies can be finished at your door. Anything unusual may need a second step, and we say so on the phone rather than promising a one-trip job we cannot do. Our mobile locksmith page explains what rides in the vans and how we schedule visits.
What does key duplication look like across Hawaiian Gardens?
In the Carson Street corridor, the keys are mostly business keys. Shops and offices near The Gardens Casino tend to need extra copies for staff turnover, plus keys for back doors, stockrooms and cash areas. Commercial key duplication there is less about a single copy and more about knowing who holds which key. Many of these doors also have panic hardware, which is a separate service, and our commercial locksmith page covers that side.
The Norwalk Boulevard corridor is apartment territory. Complexes off Norwalk often use shared pedestrian gates and banked mailboxes, so one resident can need three different keys: unit, gate and mailbox. Apartment key copies are where we see the most lockouts that a spare would have prevented. If a spare was not made in time, our apartment lockout service handles the bad evening.
The Pioneer Park / Civic Center area along Pioneer Blvd and the Fedde Sports Complex / Elaine Avenue area are dominated by the small post-war homes the city is known for, many built between the 1940s and 1960s. Keys in houses that old have often been copied several times over decades, so we see a lot of worn originals. Security screen doors are common here too, and they often have their own lock and key, so ask about them when you book. Residents near Coyote Creek on the east edge are in the same ZIP, 90716, as the rest of the city, and the same advice applies.
Climate plays a small role. Damp marine-layer mornings and modest salt-air corrosion rarely damage keys, and summer heat only moves wood doors slightly. If a key sticks in winter or early summer, the door may be binding rather than the key being bad. We check both before cutting a second copy of something that was never the problem.

Call (213) 577-1366When is a copy the wrong fix?
A duplicate only works when you have a good key and trust everyone who holds one. If you lost the only key, have no working original, or a former tenant or roommate still has a copy, another copy is the wrong answer. In those cases lock rekeying usually solves the actual problem, because it changes the lock so old keys stop working.
If a key has snapped in the lock, stop and call before trying again. If a key is stuck, bent or very worn, we can often copy it only after inspecting it. We would rather cut one key that works than five that do not.
Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for key duplication?
We have been in business since 1987 and serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties. We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood plus mobile service vans, so the person who answers the phone knows what is actually in the van and on the shelf.
You deal with one company, not a dispatch middleman who passes your call to whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees how work is done. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, at (213) 577-1366.
California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith, us included, for it before work starts. A company that dodges the question is telling you something.
How do you keep spare keys from becoming a security problem?
A spare is only as safe as where it lives. A few habits help.
- Keep one original in a safe place and copy from it, not from your daily key.
- Do not tag keys with your address, and do not hide one in an obvious spot near the door.
- Keep track of who holds copies, especially in rentals, shared homes and small offices.
- Replace badly worn keys before they fail, and test every new copy in its lock the day you get it.
Frequently asked questions
Can you copy a key marked 'Do Not Duplicate'?
Sometimes. The stamp is a request from whoever issued the key, not a physical block. We ask about your authority to copy it, and for building or business keys we may need the owner's approval first.
Can you make a key if I do not have the original?
Only in certain cases. If a key code exists or the lock can be worked from, a key can sometimes be made. If every key is lost, rekeying or replacing the lock is usually the more practical fix.
Do you offer mobile key duplication in Hawaiian Gardens?
Yes. Our vans carry blanks and cutting equipment for common keys. For restricted or unusual keys we may need a second step, and we tell you that on the phone before you commit.
Why does my new copy stick or not turn?
Usually the original was worn, the blank was a slightly different type, or the cut was not deburred. Bring both keys and we will compare them. Sometimes the lock itself is worn and needs attention.
Can you copy my apartment mailbox key?
Often yes, but some banked mailbox locks are controlled by the post office or the property manager. We check which situation you are in before cutting, and suggest the proper route if copying is not allowed.
Can you copy a high security or restricted key?
Some, not all. Patterned high security keys may be cut here with the right blank, while restricted keyways need an authorization card or proof of ownership, and the blank may have to be ordered.
Can you copy my car key?
A basic metal car key can be copied like any other. A key with a chip or remote is a different job. Some vehicles can be handled by us, and some are dealer-only, so we confirm by VIN or in person.
How do I know if I should copy a key or rekey the lock?
Copy when you trust everyone with keys and just need more of them. Rekey when a key is lost, someone moved out, or you are unsure who has copies. Call (213) 577-1366 and we will help you decide.
