What do Mercedes-Benz owners in Encino usually need?

Mercedes key problems tend to arrive in a handful of forms: a SmartKey that has worn out and stopped syncing, a lost key with a spare sitting somewhere at home, a lost key with no spare at all, a car that wakes up the dash but will not let the key turn, and an ordinary lockout. Each one leads to a different fix. The first thing we ask is the year and model, because that decides whether your car is a job we can finish at the curb or one that has to go through Mercedes.

Where you live in Encino shapes how these problems show up. Condo towers and HOA-managed apartment buildings line the Ventura Boulevard corridor, one of the denser stretches of multifamily housing in the south Valley, and residents of buildings like that usually park in shared garages or assigned spaces. In that setting a dead fob battery or a key left upstairs is an ordinary Tuesday problem. In the hillside neighborhoods south of the Boulevard, many homes sit behind driveway gates with intercom and access-control hardware, so a locked car or a missing key can also mean a gate you cannot get through comfortably. And in the postwar ranch tracts north of Ventura, the car usually lives in the driveway and the spare key lives in a kitchen drawer, which is exactly why a lost-key call there is often easier than people fear.

These are the problems we see most often with Mercedes keys and ignitions, based on how the system is built:

  • A failed or worn EIS/EZS electronic ignition, where the key is not recognized or will not turn.
  • A failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor on W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars. The dash wakes up but the key will not turn, which looks exactly like a bad key.
  • SmartKeys that have worn out after years of daily use and stop syncing.
  • Dead fob batteries. The remote buttons go first, then Keyless-Go cars start reporting 'key not detected'.
  • Cracked Chrome-key shells, worn buttons, and broken emergency blades.
  • Lost keys on newer FBS4 cars, which mean a VIN-coded dealer order with proof of ownership and a multi-day wait.

How does mobile Mercedes-Benz key service work at the curb?

We run a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and mobile service vans, and Encino is about 11 miles from that base. The van comes to wherever the car is: a condo garage, a driveway, a curb off Balboa Boulevard, or an office lot. Here is how a typical Mercedes call goes.

  1. You call (213) 577-1366. Someone answers at any hour, any day of the year. Tell us the year, the model, and whether you still have any working key.
  2. We pin down which system your car uses, usually from the VIN. That tells us whether we are in FBS3 territory, which we can service, or FBS4 territory, which is generally dealer-only. We say which one it is before anyone drives out.
  3. We confirm ownership. Making a key for a car without checking who it belongs to is how cars get stolen, so expect to show ID and registration or title.
  4. Our technician reads the EIS/EZS over infrared or through the OBD port, calculates the key password online, and generates the new key with professional Mercedes-capable tools.
  5. If your chassis needs it, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator goes in so the job can be completed.
  6. We test everything before we leave: the remote buttons, the door locks, the ignition twist, and the emergency blade. If you have only one key, we will recommend making a spare while the technician is already there.

Which kind of Mercedes key do you have?

Every Mercedes in the data we work from uses an electronic SmartKey, not a conventional transponder key. That sounds like a technicality, but it changes how replacement works. There is no clone-able chip in the way there is on, say, a Toyota. The key and the car trade rolling codes, so the car has to be taught a new key rather than the key simply copied.

From the late 1990s through roughly 2014, Mercedes used what is called the DAS3/FBS3 system. The key is the familiar infrared 'Chrome key' or a black SmartKey, and it inserts into the EIS/EZS electronic ignition and twists. The key and car exchange rolling codes over infrared.

After that, Mercedes moved to a newer system called FBS4, and it did so model by model rather than all at once. The dates we work from are:

  • Facelifted W212 E-Class: from April 2013 production.
  • CLA and GLA (models 117 and 156): from November 2014.
  • 2014 S-Class (W222), 2015 C-Class (W205), 2016 GLC (X253) and 2017 E-Class (W213): FBS4 from launch.
  • W166 ML/GLE: most stayed FBS3 through the end of production in 2019, but a Mercedes service bulletin lists model 166 from July 2013 production among vehicles that can be FBS4. That is why we confirm late cars by VIN rather than assume.

What can we do on FBS3 cars?

FBS3 cars, roughly 2000 through 2014, plus most W166 ML/GLE models through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3, are fully serviceable by a specialist locksmith. That is the lane we work in. The professional tools for this work, including Xhorse VVDI MB, Abrites and the Autel IM-series, read the EIS/EZS over infrared or OBD, calculate the key password online, and generate new keys. This covers added spares, replacements for worn SmartKeys, and all-keys-lost situations.

The one wrinkle is the steering lock. On W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 chassis, an ESL/ELV steering-lock emulator is needed for an all-keys-lost job. This also ties back to the common failure mentioned earlier: if your W204 or W212 shows dash lights but the key will not turn, the key may be perfectly fine and the steering lock motor may be the culprit. We would rather diagnose that on site than sell you a key you do not need.

Newer FBS4 cars generally pair with standard push-button start. If your Mercedes starts with a button and was built from roughly 2015 on, read the next sections before assuming anything.

What happens if you have lost every Mercedes key?

All keys lost is the call people dread, and the honest answer depends entirely on the system in your car.

On an FBS3 car, all keys lost is a job we can do. With no working key, the technician connects to the EIS/EZS, reads the data, calculates the password, and creates a new key from scratch. On the chassis that need it, the steering-lock emulator is part of the work. It takes more time and more equipment than adding a spare to a car that still has a key, which is one reason lost-key work costs more than copying, but it is routine for a specialist.

On an FBS4 car, we say plainly that this is effectively dealer-only. Keys for these cars are coded to the VIN at the factory and ordered pre-coded through Mercedes with proof of ownership. Mercedes' own service bulletin requires the vehicle to be registered as present in Xentry Diagnostics before a key can be enabled or disabled, so the car typically has to get to the dealer, and you should expect a multi-day wait. Limited specialist capability on FBS4 is emerging, but it is not something to count on, and we will not promise it.

If you are in that spot, we can still help in useful ways: confirm which system your car has, help you get the car transported or unlocked, and handle other keys and locks. You can read more on our lost car key replacement page for Encino.

What affects the cost of a Mercedes key in Encino?

We do not quote numbers on a web page, because a Mercedes key job has too many moving parts for a number to mean anything until we know your car. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down:

  • The system: FBS3 work is something we do ourselves. FBS4 work goes through the dealer, with Mercedes' own ordering process and its own timeline.
  • Whether you have a working key: adding a spare to a car that still starts is simpler than an all-keys-lost job.
  • Whether your chassis needs an ESL/ELV emulator, as W204, W207 and pre-facelift W212 cars do for all-keys-lost work.
  • The type of key: a basic Chrome key, a black SmartKey and a Keyless-Go fob are different parts, and a fob needing only a battery is a different job from one needing a full replacement.
  • Condition of the car's own hardware: a failed EIS/EZS or steering lock motor is a repair, not just a key, and we will tell you before we start that this is the case.
  • Time and location: an after-hours call from a hillside street takes different effort than a daytime visit to a driveway, although we do not run a separate story on being open at night. We answer 24/7.
  • Whether you want a spare made: doing it during the same visit is usually the more economical route compared with a second call later.

Dealer or Wilshire Lock & Key: what is the fair comparison?

The dealer is not the enemy, and in some cases it is your only option. For FBS4 cars, Mercedes controls the pre-coded keys and the Xentry registration step, so the dealer is the realistic path. If that is your car, we will tell you in the first phone call rather than waste your day.

Where a specialist locksmith makes sense is the large middle: FBS3 cars of roughly 2000 to 2014, plus most W166 ML/GLE models. Here we come to you, which matters when the car is stuck in a condo garage or you simply cannot drive it. There is no tow to a dealer and no waiting on a shipped part. You also get a technician who works on locks and keys all day, not a service desk handing the job to someone else.

In short: for FBS3 cars we are usually the more economical and more convenient route. For FBS4 cars the dealer is the answer, and our role is to help you understand that quickly. If you want a broader picture of how this works across brands, see our car key replacement overview for Encino or the general car keys guide.

Mercedes key service across Encino's neighborhoods

Encino is a patchwork, and the work changes block to block. Along the Ventura Boulevard corridor, condo buildings and HOA-managed apartment buildings mean the call is often in a garage, sometimes with building access to arrange before we can reach the car. Along the Balboa Boulevard corridor, we also see the mix of homes and offices that any busy north-south street brings. Around Encino Hospital Medical Center, medical and office suites come up for rekeys, and a staff member with a Mercedes whose fob has died can be in the same lot.

In estate neighborhoods like Royal Oaks, Lake Encino and the large-lot Amestoy Estates, driveway gates and smart-lock hardware are part of the property, and we do that work too. If your Mercedes key is lost and the gate remote was on the same ring, one visit can often cover both. In the Encino Park tract and Encino Village, postwar ranch homes are the norm, and a rekey of the house is a common companion to a lost car key, since a missing key ring usually holds both.

South of the Boulevard, the hillside streets off Hayvenhurst Avenue and White Oak Avenue are where we expect a lot of home and vehicle lockouts. Hillside homes get more direct sun and canyon wind than the flats, and the practical effects are heat expansion of entry doors and gate hardware wear. That is a home-hardware point, not a key-chip point, but it explains why a stuck door and a lost key sometimes arrive together.

We serve both Encino ZIP codes, 91316 and 91436, and the surrounding area, including the parkland around Los Encinos State Historic Park and the Sepulveda Basin Recreation Area. For the full picture of what we do in the neighborhood, see our Encino locksmith page. If your car is simply locked with the key inside, our Encino car lockout service is the quicker page to read.

Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a Mercedes?

We have been in business since 1987, and we serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, so Encino is a familiar part of the map. We are one company with a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd and our own mobile vans. When you call (213) 577-1366, you are not routed to a dispatch middleman who sends whoever is closest. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work.

We are also careful about what we claim. California requires locksmith companies to hold a BSIS LCO license, and you should ask any locksmith, including us, for that number before work starts. We would rather you check than take anyone's word for it.

If your Mercedes is a dealer-only FBS4 car, we will say so. If it is an FBS3 car, we will do the work at the curb. Either way you get a straight answer on the first call. If all you need is a battery or a replacement remote, our key fob replacement service in Encino covers that, and our Mercedes-Benz key page goes deeper into the models. To reach us any time, use the contact page or just call.

Frequently asked questions

Can you make a Mercedes-Benz key in Encino without taking the car to the dealer?

Yes, on FBS3 cars, which means roughly 2000 to 2014 models and most W166 ML/GLE vehicles through 2019 once the VIN confirms FBS3. We come to the car and program the key on site. Newer FBS4 cars are effectively dealer-only, and we tell you that on the phone.

How do I know if my Mercedes is FBS3 or FBS4?

The model year helps, but it is not the whole story, because Mercedes changed systems model by model. Facelifted W212 E-Classes moved from April 2013 production, CLA and GLA from November 2014, and the W222, W205, W213 and X253 were FBS4 from launch. Late W166 cars are confirmed by VIN. Give us the VIN and we will check.

My Mercedes dash lights up but the key will not turn. Is the key bad?

Not necessarily. On W204 C-Class and W207 or pre-facelift W212 E-Class cars, a failed electronic steering lock (ESL/ELV) motor produces exactly that symptom. A failed or worn EIS/EZS ignition can also cause it. We check the car before replacing a key you may not need to replace.

What if I have lost every key to my Mercedes?

On an FBS3 car, we can create a new key from scratch, using an emulator on chassis that need one. On an FBS4 car, a new key must be ordered pre-coded to the VIN through Mercedes with proof of ownership, and the car must be registered in Xentry Diagnostics first. Expect a multi-day wait.

Why does my Mercedes say 'key not detected'?

On Keyless-Go cars, a dead fob battery is a common reason. The remote buttons usually fade first, then the car stops detecting the key. A battery is often the simple fix, though a worn SmartKey that has stopped syncing can cause similar symptoms.

Do I need proof of ownership?

Yes. We ask for ID and registration or title before making a key, and the dealer asks for the same on FBS4 orders. It is there to protect you, because the same process stops someone else from having a key made for your car.

How much will a Mercedes-Benz key cost?

We do not quote prices online because the answer depends on your car. The main factors are whether it is FBS3 or FBS4, whether you still have a working key, whether the chassis needs a steering-lock emulator, and which type of key it uses. Call (213) 577-1366 with the year, model and VIN and we will explain what applies.

Can you help if my Mercedes is locked in a condo garage on Ventura Boulevard?

Yes. Our mobile vans go to garages, driveways and curbs. Tell us at the start if building access needs arranging, and we will plan around it. For a simple lockout without a key problem, see our Encino car lockout page, or just call us.

Is Wilshire Lock & Key available at night and on weekends?

Yes. Our phone is answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, year-round, at (213) 577-1366. Whether a job can be finished the same night depends on your car's system, and we will be direct about that.
