What does deadbolt installation really involve?
A deadbolt is the one lock on your door that does not depend on a spring. The latch in a regular doorknob can be pushed back with a thin piece of plastic. A deadbolt, once thrown, puts a solid steel bolt into the door frame, and it stays there until a key or thumbturn pulls it back. That is why it is the lock most worth getting right, and why a poorly fitted one is almost as bad as none.
Installation is more than drilling a hole and screwing in a lock. The bolt has to line up with the strike plate in the frame, the door has to sit square in its opening, the strike has to be anchored into something solid, and the cylinder has to turn freely without you leaning on the door. When any of those are off, the bolt drags, the key feels gritty, and people stop locking it because it is a nuisance. We spend most of our time on those details.
We handle three kinds of deadbolt jobs in Duarte. The first is a new deadbolt on a door that only has a knob or handleset. The second is deadbolt replacement, where an old, worn, or damaged bolt comes out and a new one goes into the same preparation. The third is a swap from single cylinder to double cylinder, or the reverse, because someone's situation changed. Each has its own wrinkles, and we will walk you through them before we start cutting anything.
Single cylinder or double cylinder: which one fits your door?
A single-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on the outside and has a thumbturn on the inside. This is the standard choice for nearly every entry door, and it is what we recommend unless there is a specific reason not to. You can leave in a hurry without fumbling for a key, and so can everyone else in the house if there is an emergency.
A double-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both sides. People ask for it when there is glass in or right beside the door, because a thumbturn within arm's reach of a pane can be reached by someone who breaks the glass. That reasoning is real, but so is the downside: if there is a fire and nobody can find the key, you have a locked door between you and the outside. For that reason we always talk this through, and we ask you to check what applies to your building, your insurance, and any landlord or association rules before you commit.
If you do choose a double-cylinder deadbolt, the safest habit is to keep a key in a fixed spot near the door, out of reach from outside glass, and to make sure every adult in the home knows where it is. We will not install one and walk away without having that conversation.
- Single cylinder: key outside, thumbturn inside. Best for most solid doors and the easiest to live with.
- Double cylinder: key on both sides. Considered where glass sits close to the lock, with the exit-key trade-off understood.
- Keyed-alike sets: several deadbolts, or a deadbolt and a knob, cut to one key so you are not carrying a ring of them.
- Smart or keypad deadbolts: a different category with its own batteries and settings, covered on our smart lock installation page.

Call (213) 577-1366How we install or replace a deadbolt, step by step
Whether you call at midday or late at night, the process is the same. We do not rush the parts that determine whether the lock works for the next twenty years.
- You call (213) 577-1366 and tell us what door it is, what is on it now, and whether the door is wood, metal, or has glass. A human answers, at any hour.
- We arrive in a mobile van carrying the hardware, so most jobs finish in one visit. We look at the door first: thickness, condition, whether it hangs square, and whether the frame is solid or split.
- If it is a replacement, we remove the old bolt and check the existing holes. If it is a new install, we mark the height and the backset, then bore the cross hole and the edge hole to the size the hardware needs.
- We mortise the edge for the bolt faceplate so it sits flush, and fit the latch assembly and the cylinder, with the connecting bar set correctly so the thumbturn or second cylinder works smoothly.
- We set the strike plate into the frame, chiseled so it sits flat, and fasten it with long screws that reach the framing behind the jamb, not just the thin wood trim around the opening.
- We test it with the door open, then closed, then repeatedly. The bolt should extend fully and retract without force. If it needs a push, the alignment is not finished.
- We hand over the keys, show you how it operates, and explain anything unusual about your door that you should keep an eye on.
What affects the cost of deadbolt installation in Duarte?
We do not quote numbers on a web page, because the honest answer depends on the door in front of us. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down so there are no surprises when we give you a figure on the phone or at the door.
The lighter-cost jobs are usually the simplest: a standard residential deadbolt going into a door that is already drilled for one, with a frame in good shape. Replacement into an existing hole is typically the more economical route compared with boring a brand new door.
- Existing preparation: a door that already has the cross hole and edge hole takes less labor than a blank door.
- Hardware grade: builder-grade bolts, heavier residential grades, and high-security cylinders differ in materials and in the effort to pick or drill them. See our notes on high-security locks if that matters to you.
- Door and frame condition: a split jamb, a warped door, or a worn-out strike area needs repair before any deadbolt will work well.
- Number of locks: several deadbolts keyed alike, or done in one visit, take shared setup time.
- Double versus single cylinder, and any special keying requests.
- Time and place: an after-hours call is different from a scheduled daytime visit, and we will tell you so up front.
- Anything beyond the deadbolt itself, such as adding a new handleset or fixing a door that will not close properly.

Call (213) 577-1366Should you replace the deadbolt, rekey it, or add a new one?
Not every deadbolt problem needs a new deadbolt. If the lock is in good shape but you do not know who has keys, rekeying changes the internal pins so old keys stop working, and it is usually the more economical route. Our lock rekey page covers that in detail. If the bolt is sound but you want a different look or a different finish across the house, that is a replacement question.
Replace when the lock is worn out, bent, damaged from a break-in attempt, or simply so old that parts and keys are unreliable. Replace also when the existing hardware is a low grade that you would like to upgrade. Add a new deadbolt when a door has only a knob lock, which is common on side doors, back doors, and older interior-to-garage doors.
If you are not sure which situation you are in, tell us what you see and we will give you a straight opinion. We would rather rekey a good lock than sell you a new one you do not need. For a wider look at the options, our lock installation page explains how deadbolts fit alongside other hardware.
Deadbolts for Duarte homes: postwar ranches, hillside lots, and apartments
Duarte's housing stock shapes what we see on deadbolt calls. Most homes in the 91010 ZIP code are postwar single-family houses built from the 1940s through the 1960s along the Huntington Drive flats, with ranch homes and modest bungalows leading the way. Many of them still carry original mid-century locksets. That often means a worn knob lock with no deadbolt at all, or an old bolt whose key has been copied so many times that it barely turns. Adding or replacing a deadbolt on a door like that is one of the most useful upgrades an owner can make.
Up on Duarte Mesa and in the Fish Canyon area, Mel Canyon area, and Spinks Canyon area, the lots are larger and many of the homes are custom. Those houses often have heavier solid doors, multiple entries, and side or garage-adjacent doors that nobody thought much about. A larger lot means more doors to cover, and it is common to want all the deadbolts keyed alike so the family carries one key. If you are changing hands on a hillside house after a sale or tenant turnover, a new set of deadbolts is a clean way to start, and we can combine it with rekeying other locks. For gates on larger-lot properties, see our gate lock repair page.
Around the Huntington Drive corridor and near the City of Hope campus area, townhomes and apartment complexes are more common. In those buildings, deadbolt work is often tied to a tenant change, a lockout, or a landlord's decision to bring doors up to the same standard. If you are a resident who is locked out first, our apartment lockout page is where to start. If you manage units, locksmith for landlords explains how we handle multiple doors. We also see visitor-housing situations near the medical campus, where short-stay guests and changing occupants make a solid, properly aligned deadbolt more than a nice extra.
Climate matters here as well. Duarte sits against the San Gabriel foothills with hot, dry summers and periodic Santa Ana winds coming out of the canyons. Sun-exposed doors expand in the heat, and a deadbolt that slid easily in spring can bind in August because the door has swollen toward the frame. Wind-blown grit works into exterior locks and makes keys feel rough. When we align a bolt we leave a little working room for the heat, and for outside locks we will tell you which finish and cylinder handle grit best. A light dry lubricant, not heavy grease, keeps things moving without collecting dust.
- Older ranch and bungalow doors often need a new cross hole and careful chiseling to fit a modern bolt.
- Hillside and canyon homes tend to need several deadbolts keyed alike.
- Townhome and apartment doors usually follow building rules, so check with your landlord or association first.
- Sun-facing doors benefit from a check of the bolt's clearance in the hottest months.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for a deadbolt?
We have been in business since 1987, and the basics of hanging a lock on a door have not changed as much as the marketing suggests. What has changed is how many companies answer the phone and then pass your job to someone you have never met. We are one company. The person who answers is part of the operation, and the technician who arrives works for us, with no dispatch middlemen in between.
We keep a storefront at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood and run mobile service vans, so the hardware comes to you and there is a real place behind the phone number. David, the owner and lead technician, oversees the work, and that is the reason we are particular about alignment, strike plates, and screws that reach the framing. Our mobile locksmith service is built around finishing the job at your door.
We serve 140 cities across Los Angeles and Ventura counties, and Duarte is one we reach regularly. Our line, (213) 577-1366, is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year. If a break-in or a failed lock leaves a door unsecured tonight, we can secure it tonight.
What to ask any locksmith before they start
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that number before work begins, and check it if you want to be sure. It is a fair question and a good company will not mind it.
Beyond the license, ask what grade of deadbolt is being installed, whether the strike will be fastened into the framing, and what the total will be once the work is done, including any call-out or after-hours component. Ask to see the old lock if it is a replacement. A straightforward answer to each of these tells you most of what you need to know about who is standing at your door.
Frequently asked questions
Can you install a deadbolt on a door that only has a doorknob?
Yes, and it is one of the most common jobs. We bore the cross hole and edge hole, mortise the faceplate, set the strike in the frame, and test it. We first check the door is thick and solid enough to take the hardware.
What is the difference between single and double cylinder deadbolt installation?
A single cylinder has a key outside and a thumbturn inside. A double cylinder needs a key on both sides. Double cylinders are considered where glass is near the lock, but they can slow your exit in an emergency, so we discuss it before installing.
Is a double cylinder deadbolt allowed in my Duarte home or apartment?
It depends on your building, your landlord or association rules, and fire and safety requirements that apply. We cannot make that call for you from a distance, so check with your landlord or local authorities, and we will talk through safe key placement.
How long does a deadbolt installation take?
A replacement into an existing hole is usually a quick visit, while a new install on an unprepared door takes longer. Frame repairs or several doors add time. We will tell you what to expect once we see the door.
Do I need a new deadbolt or just rekeying?
If the lock works well and is in good shape, rekeying is often enough and usually the more economical route. If it is worn, damaged, or a low grade you want to upgrade, replacement makes more sense. See our lock replacement page for more.
Will you come out at night for a deadbolt problem?
Yes. We answer (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year. If a door will not lock, we can secure it that night and handle the finer upgrade later if you prefer.
Can you key several deadbolts alike?
Yes. We can set multiple deadbolts, and often the knobs as well, to one key. This is popular in larger homes and on properties with several entries, such as hillside lots.
Why does my deadbolt stick in summer?
Heat can make a sun-facing door expand until the bolt rubs the strike. Wind-blown grit can also roughen the lock. Sometimes a small alignment adjustment or a cleaning solves it, and sometimes the bolt is worn and should be replaced.
How do I know my locksmith is legitimate?
Ask for their BSIS LCO license number, which California requires of locksmith companies. Also ask for the total cost up front and for a technician who identifies the company they work for.
