What does deadbolt installation actually involve?
On most doors, a deadbolt is the one lock that does real work against force. The spring latch in a knob or lever handle is built to keep a door closed, not to keep a person out. A firm shove or a thin piece of plastic can beat it. A deadbolt throws a solid steel bolt, usually a full inch, into the door frame, and it stays there until a key or thumb turn pulls it back. That difference is why deadbolt installation is one of the most common residential jobs we do for Arcadia homeowners.
The job sounds simple: drill a couple of holes and mount a lock. The quality is in the details. The holes have to be the right size and square to the door. The bolt has to meet the strike plate in the frame without dragging. The strike has to be anchored into the framing behind the jamb, not just the thin wood of the trim. A deadbolt that is slightly off will stick, grind, or only work if you lift the door as you turn the key. Most complaints we hear about a bad deadbolt turn out to be alignment problems, not defective hardware.
This page covers three situations: adding a deadbolt to a door that has none, deadbolt replacement where an old one is worn or mismatched, and double cylinder deadbolt installation for doors with glass nearby. If your project is broader, such as a whole-house set or a mix of knobs, levers and deadbolts, our lock installation page is the better starting point.
Single cylinder or double cylinder: which one fits your door?
A single-cylinder deadbolt has a keyway on the outside and a thumb turn on the inside. It is the default for most exterior doors, and it is the easiest to live with. Anyone inside can open the door in a second, with no key and no fumbling, which matters most in a fire or any other emergency.
A double-cylinder deadbolt takes a key on both sides. The only good reason to choose one is glass. If a door has a window panel, a sidelight, or a glass insert within arm's reach of the thumb turn, a burglar can break the glass, reach through, and turn the inside knob. With a keyed cylinder inside, that trick does not work. French doors and some patio-style entries are common examples.
The tradeoff is real, and we will be straight about it. A double-cylinder deadbolt can trap people inside if the key is not where they can reach it quickly. In a fire, smoke and panic are a bad time to search for a key. Building and fire codes, landlords, and HOAs often restrict or regulate these locks, and the rules differ depending on the building. We cannot give you a legal ruling, so check with the City of Arcadia building department, your landlord, or your association before you commit.
If you do go with a double cylinder, the usual habit is to keep a key in a fixed spot near the door, out of reach from any glass or opening. Some customers decide after talking it through that a single cylinder plus security film on the glass, or a thumb turn moved farther from the glass, solves the problem without the egress risk. We will tell you which way we would lean for your specific door, and then install whichever you choose.

Call (213) 577-1366How we handle a deadbolt installation, step by step
Every door is a little different, but the sequence is consistent. This is what happens when we arrive.
- We talk through the door and the concern. What is the door made of, how thick is it, is there glass nearby, and what is driving the job: a break-in, a move, an upgrade, or a lock that has stopped working?
- We inspect the door and frame. We check the slab for warping or sagging, look at the hinge side, and press on the jamb to see whether the wood behind the strike is solid. A great deadbolt in a soft frame is a weak setup.
- We choose the hardware with you. That means the grade, the finish, single or double cylinder, and the backset, the distance from the door edge to the center of the lock, which is commonly 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches. We can match your other locks or key the new one alike to existing keys.
- We prepare the door. A standard deadbolt needs a 2-1/8 inch hole through the face of the door and a 1 inch hole into the edge. On a replacement, we check whether the existing holes are clean and the right size. If they are chewed up or oversized, we deal with that properly instead of hiding it behind a bigger trim plate.
- We mount the bolt and lock body and confirm everything sits square before tightening. Overtightening can bind the mechanism, so we go by feel as well as by torque.
- We install the strike plate. We mortise it flush and fasten it with long screws that reach the framing behind the jamb. On many doors this step does more for real-world strength than the lock itself.
- We test it the way you will use it. That means door open and door closed, with the bolt throwing fully into the strike, the key turning smoothly from both sides where applicable, and the thumb turn working without force.
- We hand over the keys, show you how the lock operates, and clean up the shavings and old hardware.
Deadbolt replacement or something lighter?
Plenty of people searching for deadbolt replacement do not actually need new hardware. If your current deadbolt is sound but you are worried about who still has a key, because of a move, a former tenant, or a lost key, then lock rekeying changes the internal pins so the old keys stop working. It is usually the more economical route, because you keep the lock body and only change what makes the key fit.
Replacement is the right call when the hardware itself is the problem. That includes a bolt that is worn or loose in the door, a builder-basic lock with weak internals, a cylinder that is damaged or corroded, or a mismatched collection of brands and finishes. It also makes sense when you want a different style, such as moving from single to double cylinder or upgrading to a higher grade.
We also try not to replace what is not broken. If a deadbolt only sticks in the afternoon or in hot weather, the lock may be fine and the door may have shifted. We will tell you if the fix is an adjustment to the strike or door rather than a new lock. If a replacement is the honest answer, we will say so and explain why.

Call (213) 577-1366What affects the cost of deadbolt installation in Arcadia?
We do not publish flat prices here, because the same phrase, deadbolt installation, covers very different jobs. What we can do is tell you exactly what moves the cost up or down so you are not surprised.
The main factors are:
- New installation versus replacement. Replacing a deadbolt in existing, correctly sized holes is usually a lighter job than boring a new door from scratch.
- Hardware grade. Entry-level, mid-grade and high-security deadbolts differ in materials, internal construction and resistance to attack, and the cost of the lock itself follows.
- Single versus double cylinder, and the finish or brand you choose.
- Door condition. A solid door in good shape is straightforward. A warped, damaged or hollow door may need repair, reinforcement or a different approach first.
- Frame condition. Soft or split jambs may need reinforcing so the strike has something solid to bite into.
- Number of doors. Doing several in one visit, especially if they are keyed alike, is usually more efficient than coming back for each one.
- Timing and location. After-hours calls and travel distance from our Westwood storefront can affect the total.
- Extras. Keyed-alike setups, matching existing hardware, and add-ons such as a reinforcement kit all change the scope.
Deadbolts in Arcadia: ranch homes, rebuilt estates, condos and hillside entries
Arcadia is not one type of housing, and the deadbolt conversation changes from street to street. Across ZIP codes 91006 and 91007, here is what we see most often.
In the Rancho areas and Santa Anita Village, many homes are 1930s to 1950s ranch houses. Older doors and frames in houses that age have usually been repainted and re-hung more than once, so we pay extra attention to the wood around the strike and to whether the existing holes are clean. A new deadbolt on an older door is a good upgrade, as long as the frame behind it is sound.
In Santa Anita Oaks and the Upper Rancho, the work we see is more often a high-security deadbolt upgrade on a newer or larger home. Many of the big two-story houses here were rebuilt from the 1990s onward, and they tend to have several exterior doors: the front entry, a garage side door, patio doors, and sometimes French doors with glass. That is where the single-versus-double-cylinder question comes up most. If you are looking at a higher tier of protection, our high-security locks page explains what changes beyond a standard deadbolt.
In the Arcadia Highlands, hillside homes often have gates, long driveways and multiple side entries. Every one of those is a point where a deadbolt, or a gate lock, either works or does not. We will usually walk the property with you and count the doors that matter before quoting anything. Gates have their own hardware and their own problems, so for that side of the property see our gate lock repair page.
The foothill climate matters too. Arcadia sits below the San Gabriel Mountains, summers run hot, and the data we work from notes that south- and west-facing doors on hillside homes take heavy sun. Over the years that can warp a door slab and fade the finish. A warped slab pulls the bolt out of line with the strike, and that is why the lock that worked fine in spring starts to bind in August. When we install a deadbolt on a sun-baked door, we check alignment with the door fully warmed up if we can, and we adjust the strike to match how the door actually sits, not how it sat when it was new.
Condos and townhomes cluster near downtown and along Huntington Drive and Duarte Road. Installing there often means confirming what your HOA or building allows, since some require specific keyways, finishes, or master-key compatibility. If you own a unit and rent it out, see our page on locksmith service for landlords for turnover and multi-unit needs.
Our storefront is at 10740 Wilshire Blvd in Westwood, about 27 miles from Arcadia, and our mobile vans carry the common deadbolt hardware, boring tools and strike reinforcement, so most installs are done at your door in a single visit.

Call (213) 577-1366Why call Wilshire Lock & Key for your deadbolt
We have been in business since 1987, and a deadbolt installed properly is the kind of work that shows its quality years later, not on the day. Some of what sets us apart:
- One company from first call to finished door. There are no dispatch middlemen passing your job to whoever is closest. The people who answer the phone are the people who stand behind the work.
- A real storefront plus mobile vans. You can verify where we are at 10740 Wilshire Blvd, and the vans bring the shop to you.
- David's oversight. David, the owner and lead technician, sets how we do installs, including the strike reinforcement and alignment checks that cheaper, rushed jobs skip.
- We tell you when you do not need the job. If rekeying or an adjustment solves your problem, we will say so.
- Phones answered 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year. A broken door at night is a real security issue, and we treat it that way.
What to know before you hire any locksmith
California requires locksmith companies to hold a license from the Bureau of Security and Investigative Services, known as a BSIS LCO license. Ask any locksmith for that license number before work begins, and be wary of anyone who dodges the question or only gives a vague company name over the phone.
It also helps to ask for a clear description of the job and what affects the total before the tools come out. A legitimate quote should explain what is being installed, what could change the scope, and what happens if the door or frame needs extra work.
If you are reading this because you are currently locked out while trying to sort out a door, that is a separate emergency, and our house lockout service handles it. If you are leaning toward a keypad or app-based lock instead of a keyed deadbolt, our smart lock installation page covers that route. For the full range of home services, see our residential locksmith overview.
How to get ready for your installation visit
A little preparation makes the visit faster and the result better. Before we arrive, it helps to know which doors you want covered, whether any of them has glass nearby, and whether you want the new locks keyed alike so one key works for all of them.
If you rent or live in an HOA community, find out first whether there are rules about lock type, finish or keyways. If you already have hardware you want to use, have it on hand so we can check that it fits your door. Clear the area around the door so we can work, and let us know about any sticking, sagging or drafts, because those clues help us find alignment problems early.
When you call (213) 577-1366, tell us the door type, the problem, and whether you want single or double cylinder. If you are not sure, describe the door and we will talk it through with you.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a deadbolt installation take?
A straightforward replacement in correctly sized holes is a fairly quick job, and a new installation on a door that has to be bored takes longer. Frame repairs, warped doors, or several doors in one visit add time. We would rather take the time to align it properly than rush it and leave you with a bolt that sticks.
Can you add a deadbolt to a door that does not have one?
Usually yes. The door has to be solid and thick enough for the hardware, and the edge has to be wide enough to bore without weakening the slab. Hollow or very thin doors are a poor fit, and we will tell you plainly if yours needs reinforcement or replacement before a deadbolt makes sense.
Do I need a double cylinder deadbolt in Arcadia?
Only if there is glass close enough to the thumb turn that someone could break it and reach through. For most solid doors, a single cylinder is safer for you because anyone inside can get out quickly. If you do have glass nearby, we will go through the options with you, including a double cylinder and alternatives.
Is a double cylinder deadbolt allowed on my home?
That depends on building and fire codes, your landlord, and your HOA, and we cannot give a legal ruling. Because a key-both-sides lock can slow your exit in a fire, some buildings restrict them. Check with the City of Arcadia building department or your landlord or association before deciding.
Should I replace my deadbolt or just rekey it?
If the lock works well and you only want old keys to stop working, rekeying is usually the more economical route. If the lock is worn, loose, damaged, or low quality, or you want a different grade or style, replacement is the better choice. We will tell you which one fits your situation.
Can the new deadbolt use the same key as my other locks?
In most cases, yes. We can key a new deadbolt to match your existing locks, as long as the brands and keyways are compatible. If they are not, we can rekey the other locks, or choose new hardware that can all be keyed alike.
Can you install a deadbolt on a door that warps in the summer heat?
Yes. Sun-exposed south- and west-facing doors, common on Arcadia hillside homes, can shift with heat and pull the bolt out of line. We check how the door sits and adjust the strike and hardware to suit. If the slab itself is badly warped, we will tell you whether it can be corrected or needs replacing.
Do you install deadbolts at night or on weekends in Arcadia?
Yes. We answer the phone at (213) 577-1366 around the clock, every day of the year. If a door was damaged in a break-in or will not lock, call and tell us what happened. We will talk through how to secure it and get a technician headed your way.
How much does a deadbolt installation cost?
It depends on whether the job is new or a replacement, the grade of hardware, single or double cylinder, the condition of the door and frame, the number of doors, and the time of day. We do not quote a flat figure without knowing the door. Call us, describe it, and we will explain what the work involves.
