2005 Nissan Murano key replacement

A 2005 Nissan Murano uses a transponder key with an ID46 (Hitag-2, PCF7952) chip and a keyed ignition, not push-to-start. We cut the blade and program the chip through the OBD port, whether you have a spare or lost every key. Call Wilshire Lock & Key at (213) 577-1366, any hour.

Z50 bladed ID46 key, keyed ignition. There is no 2008 Murano.

What kind of key does a 2005 Murano use?

The 2005 Murano is a Z50-generation car with a bladed transponder key and a conventional keyed ignition. There is no push-to-start and no proximity fob on this year. You put a metal blade in the ignition and turn it, and the car also checks a chip inside the key head before it lets the engine run.

That chip is in the ID46 family (Hitag-2, PCF7952). This is verified for this year. In practice it means a key cut to the right shape will turn the ignition but the engine will not start unless the chip has been programmed to your car. A hardware-store copy with no transponder is the classic example: it looks right, it may even open the door, and the Murano still will not run.

The key also carries a mechanical blade, so the work is part metalwork and part electronics. We handle both, which is why one visit can finish the job.

  • Worn ignition wafers and key blades on high-mileage cars, which can make a key stick or turn unevenly
  • Cracked key shells, broken remote buttons and dead remote batteries
  • Hardware-store copies cut without a transponder, which will not start the engine

Duplicate key or all keys lost: what changes?

For this Murano, a duplicate needs an original key to work from. If you still have one working key, making a spare is the more straightforward route. We cut a new blade and program the new chip to the car.

If every key is gone, that is still workable on this year. All-keys-lost is possible, but it takes more steps because there is no original to copy. We have to cut a key to the ignition without a pattern and then program it from scratch.

Programming on this model is done through the OBD port. Our data shows no NASTF SDRM secure-access registration is required for this year, so that is not a hurdle for you.

  1. Call (213) 577-1366 and tell us the year, model and whether you have any working key.
  2. We confirm the key type for your car, by VIN where needed, and talk through whether a van visit or our Westwood storefront makes more sense.
  3. We cut the blade, using your original key as a pattern if you have one.
  4. We program the transponder through the OBD port and check that the engine starts and the key works in the door and ignition.
  5. If you want a spare while we are there, we can make it in the same visit.

What affects the price of a 2005 Murano key?

We do not quote numbers on a web page because the real figure depends on your situation. These are the factors that move the cost:

  • Duplicate or all keys lost. Copying from an existing key is usually the more economical route; starting with no key takes more labor.
  • Plain key or key with a remote. Your remote buttons, shell condition and battery all matter, and a cracked shell sometimes only needs a replacement housing.
  • How many keys you want made and programmed in one visit.
  • Condition of the ignition. On a high-mileage Murano, worn wafers can make cutting and fitting take longer.
  • Where the car is and what time you need us. A van visit costs differently than bringing the car to the storefront.

What do we confirm by VIN?

The chip family and the programming method above are verified for this year. What our data does not settle is the exact remote configuration on your particular car, such as which remote-head key it came with and whether it was replaced by a previous owner. Where that matters, we confirm by VIN and by looking at the car and key in person before cutting or ordering anything.

If a locksmith ever tells you something sounds off about a key job, ask to see their California BSIS locksmith company (LCO) license. California requires it, and you are entitled to ask any locksmith for it.

Frequently asked questions

Does a 2005 Nissan Murano have a push-to-start system?

No. The 2005 Murano has a keyed ignition with a bladed transponder key. There is no proximity fob or start button on this year.

Can you make a key if I lost all my 2005 Murano keys?

Yes. All-keys-lost is possible for this year. It takes more steps than a duplicate because there is no original to copy from, so we cut a key to the ignition and then program the chip through the OBD port.

Why won't my hardware-store copy start the Murano?

The engine needs a programmed transponder chip, and this year uses an ID46 chip. A copy that is only cut to the right shape can turn in the lock but will not start the car.

Do I need the original key to get a duplicate?

For this year, yes. A duplicate is made from an original key, so bring or keep one working key if you have it. If none is left, we handle it as an all-keys-lost job.

Is the key programming done through the OBD port?

Yes. Programming for this year is done through the OBD port, and our data shows it does not require NASTF SDRM registration.

My remote buttons stopped working. Do I need a whole new key?

Not always. Dead remote batteries, worn buttons and cracked shells are common on older Muranos. We look at the key first and tell you whether a battery, a new shell or a replacement is the right fix.

How do you know which key my particular Murano needs?

The chip family is verified for this year, but remote setups can vary from car to car. We confirm by VIN and by looking at the car and key in person before cutting or ordering anything.
